French Corner is an amazing little french patisserie bistro located on the corner of Phoebe Street and Coast Highway in Encinitas. I am a regular here and I am always greeted by a friendly staff. There are several patio tables and chairs to sit down outside. I usually get my order togo unless i have a savory crepe or salad. The food here gets 5 stars hands down! It's legitimate french cooking and I've never had anything I didn't like. The quiche and crepes are great, definitely try one of those when you come. It's a little expensive, which is fine because is delicious BUT just know you're not leaving without spending some $$. The staff is very nice and the atmosphere is very relaxing. I, and my family, have been frequent and happy customers of French Corner since it first opened. We have always enjoyed the food, atmosphere, music, almond croissants, and (for the most part) the service. Unfortunately, just in the past couple of days (but on separate occasions) myself and my boyfriend were given cold, disrespectful, and dismissive service from a young woman named Andie. Today when ordering from Andie, (who appeared to be put off for simply having to take an order) I asked if they have avocado toast. She said yes (neglecting to mention it has cheese) and I ordered it under the assumption it would be toast with avocado. When I got it and took a bite I quickly realized it had goat cheese, which I don't eat. I very kindly apologized for the fact that I didn't realize it had goat cheese and asked if I could please get another one. Andie was immediately put off and told me I'd have to purchase a new order. I was thrown by that, but more so by her extremely negative attitude, not even attempting to offer any type of communication, or service, which happens to be the cornerstone of a successful small business/restaurant in a small community. Further, Andie just looked at me with a shitty, blank stare, offering nothing, at which point I handed her the toast and said, "here you go, you can keep it!" And walked out. A few minutes later I called asking to speak to a manager at which point the phone was handed to Andie. When I explained to her that I was just given the worst service, and spent $7 on nothing, but frustration, and still being hungry, her response was, "then you can email the owner with your complaint." Andie, besides the fact you didn't give me the owners email, I don't want to email the owner. What I, and any other paying customer wants is to just be treated with a little respect, patience, and kindness...the same respect, patience, and kindness I offered to you when I initially placed my order, and when I apologetically, and kindly asked if I could get a new piece of toast without cheese. Lastly, I have NEVER written a bad review here on yelp or anywhere until now. After sharing this story with two other people today they both passionately agreed that the service at French Corner is severely lacking and at least five people I know will not return anytime soon, if at all because even those amazing almond croissants can't remove the bitter taste left in my mouth today. read more

Came here for an afternoon coffee and treated myself to a merengue. Best merengue (mini one) I have ever had. Great flavor and texture. Sometimes merengues have a distinctly eggy nose, and this was not the case here. It was lovely. I just had a regular drip coffee, but it was great as well. Crepe was light and delicious, and the combination of ham and cheese with the light dash of honey (?) was both sweet and savory. What a great little French café set in funky Leucadia, but there is nothing funky about this place! There's a lot of little French details everywhere but where it really counts is the food. In the case, they have almond croissants, my favorite! They also have a variety of tartines, omelettes, crapes sweet and savory There is a variety little tables to choose from. Tables located facing Coast Highway 101 are great for people watching but a bit to noisy for my liking. I split an omelette and an almond tea latte. I was great for a fast bite with a client. What can I say but WOW! I discovered this spot when I lived out in Dana Point. My roommate found it and told me they had some pretty wonderful chocolate croissants and coffee. Being that Leucadia is a 30 mile drive from Dana Point, it's not exactly close. Well, we drove out there one morning, and that was it for me. I was hooked. This place became my new happy place when I had time to kill and needed a spot to relax. On a day off, I'd drive down and have a cup of their espresso with mocha and citrus slices (can't recall the name of it), a mushroom quiche and a chocolate croissant. That's my go to. I'd sit on their patio and enjoy. Then I'd grab a few things to take home. I crave this place and wish it was closer to home. I now live 70 miles away, but I still take relaxing drives out to Leucadia for the sole purpose of enjoying this little jewel of a spot followed by a stroll, or seat, on the nearby beach. It's the best! My first Instagram post (ever) was made almost three years ago today and includes everything I'm mentioning here. My most recent trip to French Corner was a month ago. My wife (who has been to France twice...without me which we won't get into now) who is the real food critique was impressed with the quality and abundance of pastries. I was from out of town and I will definitely come back here when I visit SD again. This place is small and the line obviously goes out the door with or without covid restrictions. I came into the shop to get a pastry and when I'm walked in I went the the bathroom then as I got out there was a man right outside the bathroom door and I moved to the side to let him in the bathroom but then he starts to starts YELL at me for using the bathroom!! And he said he was the OWNER! He's like " THE BATHROOM IS FOR CUSTOMERS ONLY " and I'm like I was going to buy something but now that your yelling at me I definitely won't. And he starts screaming at me "THANKS FOR TAKING A SH*T IN MY BATHROOM IT SMELLS GREAT" like for all the customers to hear! And he just keeps going off on me and Screaming at me! I CANT NOT believe that an owner would be so rude and harsh to his customers. Do NOT give this terrible man your bussineHe definitely lost my business and the other customers that witnessed this horrific incident. Ask any of the customer that where there that witnesses this! Absolutely love my experience at the French corner. The food was amazing and a lot more generous in portion size than many similar style cafes. Very impressed with their coffee as well. My mother was very happy with her le miel cafe. And my lavender latte was the perfect amount without being too soapy. Will be returning again! read more

Super cute and tiny. I've been on a French pastry kick since I gave up being gluten free. Yippee! My jeans can definitely tell. Any way - just popped in and grabbed an almond croissant (recommended) and the last second I ordered a bullet proof coffee. OMG they would have 5 stars if I only ordered the coffee - it was that good! And you have to know I'm a picky bi--ch! When it comes to coffee. It's espresso with coconut butter almond milk and cinnamon. I'm so sad that I dont live in the area....so I won't be getting another one soon. Having been here a few times, I find myself trying different things every time. So far from a varied menu I've tried: The artichoke tomato quiche, ham omelette, croissant sandwich, spinach quiche, crepe vegetarian, fresh squeezed orange juice, bullet coffee, lavender coffee, canapé, pistachio cake, chocolate croissant, almond croissant. All have been good! Regarding their plain croissant it seems to be a hit or miss. Some days we've been there when they came hot from the oven and those hit the mark. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! We went there today and sat outside. We went inside to ask for a menu, but they didn't have one, just the one on the wall. So we looked at the pics they had on yelp, we sat there for probably 10 min deciding if there was anything that we would like. But since we were pretty hungry and they only offer breakfast/lunch items we decided to go somewhere else. Once we got up the owner of this place chased out of the door and started YELLING at us for not placing an order!!!! So if you do deicide to eat there, make sure you stand on the sidewalk and do not sit down(!) while looking at their yelp, otherwise you are obligated to order there!! Just to be clear there were plenty of empty tables, so it is not like someone was waiting for our table. We went there a few weeks ago and ordered some coffees and pastries to go. The coffee was so so, but the pastries were pretty good. Today after we decided to go somewhere else we were thinking about coming here some other time to get breakfast and coffee, but after today we will definitely never come back!! And we'll be sure to tell our friends about this nasty treatment of their potential customers!! Another thing is there was a HUGE MESS outside, muffin and empty water bottle on the table, a t-shirt drying on one of the umbras (wtf??) and some towels hung on some of the chairs. I was sure it was one of the customers, but then it turned out it was the owner's son who made such a huge mess!! If they are so untidy outside where their customers can see the mess just imagine how their kitchen must look like!!! I'm just very happy and relieved that we didn't order anything there today!! Very close to home but for some reason we'd always walked past without stopping. Mistake! Had a pretty sophisticated meal here for a late breakfast/early lunch of omelet, dense bread, and salad. Wasn't cheap but everything on the plate was perfect. It all disappeared embarrassingly fast. I can think of worse ways to spend an hour than sitting outside on the little patio and crushing some good food, watching passing trains and about a million bikes, and taking in all of the wonderfully weird personality that is Leucadia. read more

Offer fewer menu items but focus on doing them right. As of now, the menu is huge plus daily specials but everything is mediocre. It's a text book case. My husband and I were so stoked to find such a quaint cafe close to home. For the past 2 months we've come in at least twice a week. Lately we have noticed that our experience depends on who is taking our order. It's hit or miss if they are friendly, and lately our order has come out differently. The last time we were in, we were charged way more than usual and didn't realize until we sat down, but didn't want to get back in line to ask the cashier. This place is Awesome!!! I've been here on 2 occasions, and both times, the coffee was robust and great tasting and the pastries, simply delicious! I'll definitely be back! I didn't even know this place existed, until one day while I was out surfing at Ponto's State Beach in front of a break referred to as: "Camp Grounds," I met this very sweet, vibrant, pretty young lady out in the lineup, named Carmen. I actually surf in a kayak; so we were taking turns dropping in on the really fun waves that were pulsing through on that evening. We had a back and forth conversation going every so often in between our rides, & during this time, she mentioned that she worked here, while putting herself through school. I'd completely forgotten the name of this place and the location...but then had the good fortune of running into Carmen again (at you guessed it- Ponto's), a couple of months later, and asked her: "What's the name of that place you work at, again?" I loved this place until today. They forgot to include my coffee which normally wouldn't be a problem. The real issue was when the manager refused to accept the fact that I ordered one, even though the charge on my card was $19.28 and the only other thing I ordered was a breakfast croissant which is listed at $11 on their menu-- they didn't seem to realize the discrepancy in the numbers. I know, shame on me for not getting receipt at the time I ordered. I will also note that they messed up our other separate food AND coffee order. I hope others consider my review before visiting this unorganized and careless establishment. read more
