The good: great pastries and croissants. Food is good too. The Bad: terrible service if you decide to dine-in and order at your table. This is not a one-time occurrence either. Been here 3 -5 times in the past 2 months. Today was the topper though. They gave us menus when we walked in and despite 3 different employees walking right by, over a 10 minute period, none of them acknowledged us. Not even the server serving the table right next to us. So I get up and walk to the register where 3 employees are hovering around the front counter, nobody really doing anything that seemed urgent. I let them know we've been sitting and waiting for a good 10 min plus for someone to take our order. Gal at counter took my drink order and says someone will take my order when they bring my cappuccinos. Great, I guess we'll be waiting another 5 or so minutes to place our order. Once they took our order, food came out in a reasonable time but that was it. No checking back with us or any of the standard sit-down restaurant service. I even had to go up to register to grab my check. It's a shame a restaurant with better than average food can't perform average customer service. Pastries are solid 4.5 stars but I am giving 2 stars to see if we get the attention of the owners/management. PS. There was lipstick on my coffee cup too. read more

Went to Versaille for the first time a few days ago. It was on a Saturday morning. My friend and I were concerned it'd be super busy so we got there at 9am. Well, we not only got a comfy seat, but it never got completely full. Sure there were people in line for pastries, but they took to go. We stayed till 10:30 and it never got crazy busy. Yay! This review is mostly for the experience. I didn't want a huge breakfast, so asked if I could just order toast and a couple eggs. They were great about this and charged me fairly. I also got a vanilla latte, which was great. We mostly wanted to spend time together in a comfy, not crazy-busy place. That's hard to find on a Saturday morning. But we found this gem and it was perfect. The decor was cute, very pink and had the British Baking Show on the huge TV the whole time. Haha, it was so funny ... there wasn't sound, so it wasn't distracting. Kinda added to the vibe. The servers were great - any of them at any time would take our order, answer questions or bring our food. It didn't matter. They were all helpful and aware. There's outdoor seating as well. I have previously only gone to Versailles for just pastries which have all been great but this was the first time I came for breakfast and was surprise how incredible the avocado toast was! It had caramelizad onions and a perfectly poached egg on it. The fruit cup was a a great selection and very fresh. The mocha was great too! We met a friend here for a weekday brunch. With a choice of indoor and outdoor seating, we opted for a table on the patio, which overlooks the parking lot. I started with a croissant (2/5) and coffee (4/5), like I would do in Paris. Sadly, the croissant fell short -- warm but soft, not crispy. For brunch, we had: Normand Eggs Benedict (3/5) -- Smoked salmon, two poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce on English muffin, with tomato and potatoes (3/5). The eggs were poached hard. ($20) Quiche Lorrain (4/5) -- This classic French egg dish, made with ham and Swiss cheese, is a favorite of mine. Versailles did a very good job, and the portion served was generous. It was served with a side salad of mixed greens with a nice vinaigrette dressing (4/5). ($18) Service was slow, maybe because we were the only ones dining on the patio. My husband and I like the pastries and food here but not so much with their service. We're waiting to be seated and a number of wait staff walked by without acknowledging us or said, "someone will be with you shortly." They looked at us and walked on by. To us, this is bad training. Even if it is not their job to lead customers to a table, they should acknowledge people who are waiting. When I brought it up while I was paying, I did what their bill said, to tell them how they can improve, the lady at the check out just said sorry, we're busy today rather than acknowledging the misstep or thanking us for bringing it to their attention. If you didn't want to hear how you can improve, don't out it in the bill. Also, yes, there were busy but the restaurant was not full inside or outside. It came with a side of fresh fruit that was actually fresh (not the usual mushy kind you sometimes get elsewhere), and every bite tasted bright and delicious. This place has THE BEST raspberry tart ive ever tasted in my LIFE. I'd go out of my way to get it. Its got fresh berries on top & its filled with what tasted like creme brulee to me! So fancy and so so worth the price. The crust also held up the whole way; it didnt fall apart and dump custard everywhere on the plate. THAT is the mark of a good tart. My mom had the quiche lorraine and she enjoyed it! The brie was incredible. I had a sadly disappointing chicken sandwich. The bread was amazing and i ended up getting some (french!) butter which was delish and just eating the bread. The chicken kinda tasted funny to me. It was good with some of my mom's brie on it tho haha I would absolutely come back here and maybe get breakfast because someone next to us got french toast and i almost ran over there to eat it myself. They have quite a selection of pastries. The decor is adorable: pink and fresh flowers! Very cute and fun. 4 stars Tried this French bakery with my whole family--my parents, younger sister, and my immediate crew. Overall, nothing was bad about the place. Everything tasted good, the service was fine, and the space had a really pleasant, clean, and breezy California vibe. The big front windows were open, and we enjoyed sitting outside. I had what I believe was a special--a Parmesan chicken sandwich. The chicken had a European feel to it, almost like a Czech-style preparation, and it was tasty. That said, I felt like it was missing something--maybe a sauce or extra punch of flavor to really make it pop. We also got one of their rose desserts to go, which was visually beautiful and delicate. My mom didn't love her sandwich though--she mentioned that the baguettes can be hit or miss in terms of freshness, depending on the day. Great first experience! This cafe was in my to-try list and a couple days ago I had to go to that area and was the perfect occasion... especially because it was hailing! Yes, hailing in Encinitas! Nothing like finding Versailles when doing a search on Yelp and finding that not only they have excellent coffee, but the number of pastries is just amazing. The restaurant is cozy, cute, and welcoming. I like the Eiffel tower decor so brings us a little bit of Paris in SoCal, why not? I had a perfect cappuccino and an oranais, which is one of those flakey pastry with cheese and apricot or peach. Super delicious, can't wait to go back again and get some to bring home for next day too! I like how I was able to sit at the bar and watch the people at the kitchen burning the top layer of the famous creme brulee. I have so much deliciousness to try there for sure! read more

The ginger haired worker allowed us to order at the counter where we got our Oranais (an apricot pastry $6) & the Pain Aux Raisins (a raisin roll $6). He was welcoming and kind. The Oranais aux abricots is a pastry that I haven't had before. It's a new favorite!! The pastry is cooked perfectly and probably has an apricot glaze on top for that beautiful shine. The apricots are plump and sweet, not grainy or soggy. The pastry cream is smooth and delicious too. The pastry has beautiful layers as well! This time they didn't ask if we wanted the pain aux raisins to be warmed up, but it's ok. It was as big as the plate and had ample amounts of raisins. I love the depth of flavor the raisins had. It was beautifully caramelized and had a lovely shine to the top. A very delicious pastry that is big enough to share. I highly recommend this spot! Despite the café not being busy, it took about 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Once a server did come by, we placed both our drink and food order. The food arrived in about 15 minutes, but after that we were completely ignored. No one checked on us, and after watching two employees stand around, I eventually got up to ask for boxes and ended up paying the bill right then and there. It's a shame, because this is a cute café with lots of potential and clearly good food and pastries. However, the service fell flat and ultimately overshadowed the experience. We visited Versailles yesterday and had a great experience. The food was fantastic, the service was friendly, and the pastries were phenomenal. My husband is gluten free and I am vegetarian and both got galettes for brunch. They were so well made that we felt like we had been transported to Paris.
