Finding this place on an AI suggestion for an early dinner coming back up north from La Jolla, took a chance and pulled into the parking lot that is directly a stone's throw from trains going by. Its a very cute and charming patio and seating areas inside and out, and was lively. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the ambience as we found it very bland, re-heated type. Service was good, but couldn't figure out why food was so off and tasteless. The Birria Eggrolls sounded divine but had that reheated vibe and texture. Was very underwhelming in terms of taste and crispness. Meat and cheese looked like it was faded/left out after cooked or reheated. We then split a seafood enchilada plate and it was completely devoid of any taste; barely any seafood in it, just 2 heavy thick smelly corn tortillas, the rubbery kind that's served at Rubios locations (are they still in business?) I love me some corn tortillas, but not these rubber mat-thick ones, the light fluffy corn ones. $40 hefty price tag wasn't close to delivering on any point value or taste wise. We asked for the beans on the side, and I have to say odd as it is, it was the best refried beans Ive ever tasted in my life. Asked for some house chips (I guess they dont bring unless you ask here and zero accompanying salsa I mean really?) got a small portion to dip in the bean spread; it was the best part of the meal, and it shouldnt have been. The gem of Encinitas! Located on N Coast Hwy 101. On a weekend late afternoon, we found parking across the street in the unpaved gravel area along the rail line corridor with the other cars. Although Google maps was instructing us to take a U turn and park in the spaces on the street in front, those were all taken. A little wonky on the start as there was no host or hostess and just busy servers or bartenders. A server told us to sit anywhere and a server named Nick came out to take our order. Hubby's favorite is a sangria and I took a sip. Just perfect on the last summer weekend of July. Although Mexican or Hawaiian style flavors is their thing, as a first timer wanted to try something fairly simple- a burger and truffle fries. Pleasantly surprised by this one. Sometimes the local eateries can be hit or miss, but this long time local restaurant is true to the town! Walking distance from our home very convenient and very upscale menu bar and cocktails. I love their lobster bisque soup. It's the best creamy slight hint of sherry and a drizzle of olive oil. They have the best tasting sangria in North County or even San Diego. I always get the sangria. Great cocktail list husband loves her old fashions and their creative cocktails. We typically get the tahini salad, hubs usually gets a salad with grilled steak on top or any of the other salad dishes. Their bread is delicious, especially with their pesto sauce. Service is great. Quite upset with our experience here. I came for a birthday brunch with my family and it made me honestly wish I chose somewhere different. The establishment is fine overall, good space with fine decor, but our service, and mostly the rate at which we got our food and attention, was horrible. We had 2 waiters during our time and idk if there was no communication about our table or the second waiter we got was just so needed at other tables but we just unfortunately felt neglected. Our food between ordering and getting it (after having to inquire 2 times) took about 50 mins to get. Meanwhile tables that got seated way after us got their food before. And we didn't have a complicated order. A lot of our food when it came out was Lukewarm which is sad bc the flavors were overall good for everything. The second server while a nice young gentleman, was just scattered and not attentive. We had to keep being the one to catch him to ask for refills on drinks and even then, that was few and far between being able to catch him. The last time we inquired about our food before it actually came, he made a joke like "sorry guys. But like, sometimes when it takes a while for food come, the food can taste better" and it was like, no...no it didn't. Went to dinner here and immediately ordered myself a margarita with Mezcal! As someone who prefers Mezcal over tequila, I'm always glad when I have that option and it was a delicious drink! We came to Le Papagayo for a late lunch and were bummed to find out bottomless mimosas end at 2:00 We actually arrived at 2:10, and it's not posted anywhere (I looked!). Our server was sweet, and a veteran server did stop by after I asked about it, but it still felt like a letdown. I always passed this place but never went. Decided to do so for my grandma's bday and it was fantastic! We sat inside on a Saturday and it was rather busy so we were glad we had made a reservation. We all had a few different items but our favorite were the Papagayo Burrito and the chilaquiles. Guys, people mess up chilaquiles all the time but these were fantastic and crispy and very flavorful! I got it with a side of beans and highly recommend doing so. As for the burrito the French fries were so flavorful as was the meat (it's their version of a Cali breakfast burrito). Honestly though the thing that blew me away was the service. Aiko was our server and he went above and beyond and was tremendously patient. The manager Holden was even checking in on everyone and was super kind and courteous. Sincerely 10/5 stars on that front. There is inside seating (a few tables out by the parking lot) and a few on the side of it near the street. There's inside seating and a bar as well. Made a reservation for 7 people on a Saturday for brunch, and good thing I did -- this place gets packed! They have both indoor and outdoor seating, but no matter where you were, the waitstaff were super attentive and happy to help. I got the Shakshuka, and it was so filling. Something interesting they do here is that the base is potatoes, which made it much more substantial but there must have been three potatoes in this. The actual tomato and egg portion was very good -- the egg yolk was perfectly jammy, and the tomatoes were nicely roasted. I wish it came with more bread to dip into the shakshuka with. Everything was freshly fried and crispy. For an entree, I ordered the lobster roll that came with a choice of various fries or mixed greens. Went with the mixed greens since we already got the truffle fries for the table. The portions are healthy. The lobster roll was stuffed with lobster and plenty of melted butter to dip the warm , soft brioche bun. We arrived prior to 5 PM. The menu says the dinner entrées are not served until 5 PM. We were still able to order since our food arrived just after five we could get what we want, but I think it's important to note this information in the review. Before 5 PM you can order tapas, salads, and cocktails. They have good choices for tapas. it was fairly quiet when we arrived around 4:30 PM. But the restaurant filled in quickly. Before we left, the live music started the speakers are very loud, even in the bathrooms. So if you're not sitting in the live music area you are hearing the live music throughout the restaurant. The volume was a little bit overwhelming, and made it more difficult to converse with our friends. We enjoyed the food we ordered. The cocktails have clever names and are tasty. We tried different salads. All were good. I had Papagayo flatbread. It was just ok. However, the arugula prosciutto flatbread that my friend ordered was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend this.
