From the moment we walked in, the decor was absolutely captivating. Lush greenery enveloped the space, with plants positioned so close you could feel immersed in nature. The lighting was warm, soft, and intimate, with beautiful mirrors and frames casting a gentle glow. The staff were very professional and friendly. Although we arrived late for our reservation, we were able to find a seat near the bar, before transitioning to the bar and received attentive service. They have a live dj that played upbeat house music, which set a cool vibe. I ordered drink number nine, which featured coconut cream. Drink number ten was spectacular--they set it ablaze with cinnamon that ignited into sparks. The menu was pretty eclectic. I enjoyed the fried chicken with caviar, my first time trying it, and it did not disappoint! The lobster bao buns on the other hand looked beautiful but lacked seasoning and flavor. The overall experience was wonderful. I noticed many guests celebrating special occasions here--it's an ideal spot for birthdays, anniversaries, or first dates. Parking was not ideal we had to drive around quite a bit to find street parking as the parking lot nearby is only for customers of that shopping center and was full anyway. The walk to the restaurant from wherever you find parking is nice with views of the beach or nearby shops.

Sago presents an energetic, boisterous, and trendy environment. Visiting during the early evening, the restaurant was already packed with a lively crowd enjoying the views and the food. It offers a great atmospheric transition during sunset, and the dressed-up staff complemented the vibe of the room. THE SERVICE The service was a major highlight, anchored by our server, Trista. She was professional, highly attentive, and showcased a deep knowledge of the menu. Furthermore, the restaurant's commitment to hospitality was proven when our main course hit a snag. Our initial whole sea bass arrived partially undercooked; when we politely asked if the kitchen could apply a bit more heat, they instead kindly and promptly replaced the entire dish. THE FOOD The food presentation was detailed across the board, utilizing decorated Portuguese plates from CB2. * Kimchi Marble Potatoes: A standout. Crisp texture with a flavorful mix of cilantro chimichurri and chive crema. * Raw Kusshi Oysters: Sourced from Canada, these were juicy and smooth, elevated by a bright cucumber Serrano ponzu. * Hamachi ceviche: Clean-tasting and pleasantly acidic, balanced well by the creamy avocado. * Chicken Satay: A great bite from the grill with a slight char while remaining incredibly juicy. * Grilled Whole Sea Bass: The yellow curry sauce was packed with deep flavor, and the fish was served over crisp fingerling potatoes, which provided a great surprise texture. THE MISSES While the flavors were thoughtful, the kitchen's execution on a few basics needs slight refinement. The coconut rice accompanying both the chicken satay and the sea bass was noticeably undercooked. Combined with the initially underdone fish, these minor technical misses held back the dining experience. OVERALL A high energy spot to get dressed up for and have a night out on the town with friends. A tasty menu complements a broad selection of cocktails and wine. SAGO also offers a dance lounge later in the evening.

Drinks were good but personally, too sweets. I liked the dessert the most overall. The only dessert on menu. Foods were okay. Nice vibe and interior. Good music.

The atmosphere and decor is a VIBE. However, the food is average or slightly below especially for the price. The portions are tiny. The Pork Satay & the fried rice had barely ANY meat in it. The cocktails were balanced but nothing spectacular. The service felt kind of rushed. Felt like they tried to get us in & out so they could seat more. Overall very underwhelming experience, & I don't think i'll be back.

Sago has become a vibey, fun addition to downtown Encinitas (if you tried it when it first opened and were disappointed like we were, give it another chance)! The moody jungle vibe with live DJs constantly spinning is a fun upscale addition to the downtown Encinitas scene and the food options are delicious! We recently tried the fried chicken and caviar (gluten free!!), ceviche, and lobster bao buns and all were tasty. The staff was also super knowledgeable about allergies, which was really helpful.

Celebrated my aunt's birthday here, and we were all pleasantly surprised by how much we liked SAGO. The atmosphere is intimate and beautifully decorated. It feels very upscale. Our server was sweet but it took quite some time for us to place an order. For cocktails, we tried the N'9 (tequila with pineapple and coconut cream) and the N'10 (mezcal with passionfruit and lime flavors). Both were great and very refreshing. We got a bunch of dishes: nasi goreng (Thai-inspired fried rice), hamachi ceviche, fried chicken and caviar, and lobster bao buns. I really liked their non-fried options! The nasi goreng was so yummy. The hamachi ceviche was probably my favorite out of everything, since the hamachi was so buttery and fresh. Both the fried chicken and caviar and the lobster bao buns were ok. We thought both fried dishes were more on the heavier side since they were quite greasy. Overall, SAGO is a great spot to dress cute and have an aesthetic dinner!

We had reservations and was sat up top. At first I was thinking I wish we were sat downstairs. But when I went downstairs, it was popping and kind of glad we didn't sit there because it was pretty loud. It was lit but if you're trying to have conversations, I think upstairs is best. Our server was Lamar and was so great, very attentive. Still filled our waters even after we paid. The food was amazing, everything we had was so good. Although I would probably skip the nasi goreng rice next time. And was hoping for a little more caviar on the fried chicken. The drinks were amazing as well. I got the madori sour. Not too sweet and just right on the sourness. Great place to celebrate anything really, or just a good date night. After certain time they do check ID's (they were doing that at the door when we left) as I think this doubles as a lounge? Not sure

I've been here three times now. for me to go back somewhere three times means it genuinely made me say wow, and sago does that consistently. the shrimp ceviche is a must. tried it for the first time on this last visit and it was perfect. the noodles and steak skewers are my repeat orders every single time. the salad that comes with the skewers and the dressing especially are so good. my friend thought it was too salty, I thought it was perfect. know your audience. the martini is worth getting. it comes with olive juice on the side so you control how dirty you want it. and it was served chilled, which for me is non negotiable. shareable plates make this place really fun. you get to try a lot and everything feels intentional. one miss this visit was the chicken and caviar. it came out soggy and slimy, genuinely inedible. we sent it back and they took it without issue, so kudos for that. might have just been an off night but worth noting. a few things to know going in: expect $20-30 per item. there's a 4% service charge added automatically that I didn't catch until after I paid. and double check your order before it arrives. they brought us rice instead of noodles, swapped it out no problem, but I ended up being charged for both at the end. just keep an eye on your bill. the vibe is unlike anything else in san diego right now. cool, fun, worth it despite the hiccups.

I came here for my birthday dinner with my boyfriend on a Friday night, and we were able to find parking quickly. The service was great, and all of the food we tried was delicious. We had the tuna sashimi, tuna tartare, chicken with rice, and drinks... everything was bomb. The vibe was really nice too, and I would definitely love to come back and try more of the menu. I do wish they had included a little birthday dessert or treat since we were celebrating, but that's okay.

Restaurant was so pretty! Tropical vibes and decor~~ The food was better than expected. I really enjoyed the steak and the indomie noodles. Very flavorful and loved the thick chewy texture of the noddles itself. Didn't try their drinks but heard it was pretty good

I've been here a few times for both the nightlife and the restaurant and the ambiance is absolutely GORGEOUS. I've never had a bad experience with the service and the food has always been delicious. I'm usually not a ceviche person at all, but I gave theirs a try and it took everything in me not to order seconds. It does get very loud, dark, and crowded later into the night though, so I'd recommend avoiding late hours if you're bringing family or kids. This will always be one of my top recommendations in the area for food and fun

We had the most INCREDIBLE evening dining at SAGO. The vibes are so immaculate, you feel like you're at an upscale cocktail lounge in Tulum. The food was 10/10 I wish we tried everything on the menu but you cannot leave without trying the Lobster Bao Buns...seriously life changing!!! We will definitely be adding SAGO as a go-to date night spot!

Overall, this restaurant has a lot of potential! The ambiance is decadent - it truly feels as if you've stepped into a jungle with twinkling star-lights overhead, dense foliage, and a dimly-lit lounge. My group of five had reservations at 8:45PM on a Friday night. This is 1-2 hours later than we normally eat dinner, but figured the food must be worth the wait! Upon arrival, the hostess said she'd seat us in a couple minutes. 22 minutes pass by, as we frequently tried checking in for updates about our table. It turns out the manager had given our table away to a different group. We were very hungry and obviously unhappy with the situation. A gal from my group insisted on a free round from the bar as we waited; thankfully, the hostess agreed. We were about to walk out. John is an absolute magician behind the bar - he can craft incredible cocktails in the blink of an eye. He also had calm and gentle energy throughout the whole order. We were finally seated at a table at 9:14pm. We ordered a variety of different shareable plates for the table and enjoyed each one! The ceviche was lovely and the steak kabobs were phenomenal! This was honestly one of the better meals I've had in a while - it was filling and flavorful. Icing on the cake? Our server was from Denver (fun full circle as we all traveled from the Mile High to Encinitas!). Although the others in my group would not return due to the manager's unorganized mistake, I'd still be open to give them another chance. It's a popular spot!

    Ask the Community - SAGO

    Do they have gluten-free options?

Do they have dancing on Friday and Saturday nights or just a DJ but no dancing? If they have dancing, where do they do it? Do they clear the tables off the dance floor so there is room to dance? Is there a cover?

I heard there is a dress code? If I came in with a button up shirt and shorts is that ok?

I think you can wear nice shorts. I was dressed casual, allbird shoes & white jeans...some ladies at the bar had on high heels and dresses. The dress code is def more formal for being Encinitas.

Is this place family friendly? Looking to celebrate my daughter's 23rd bday

For a 23-year-old’s birthday, absolutely- on weekend evenings it’s more adult, focused, with DJs, entertainment, etc.

Are their vegetarian items on the menu?

    Yes a few!

Do you have a kids menu? If so, what is it?

Hey Alicia, I apologize, we don’t offer a kids menu- We’re currently operating on a limited menu offering as we prepare for the launch of our summer dining program next weekend

    Are kids allowed?

    Yes

I'll admit it was a little bit of a culture shock when I walked in. Albums for sale, food, coffee, and more of a lounge feel than the classic San Diego brewery setup I'm used to. I guess that explains the fancier name. I liked it though. Good place to sit, people watch, and catch the traffic near the station. There were plenty of Padres fans rolling through that day, which added to the energy. The beer is still Modern Times, still cold, and still refreshing. Fun spot.

I would have loved to see a few more cider options, but the one they had was still really delicious. I also got a flatbread pizza and it was excellent--perfect as an appetizer or even a light dinner. The staff is friendly however they are extremely unprofessional during our entire meal. They were talking amongst each other so much that it was disturbing our conversations at our own dinner table. It also distracted the server from attending to us. There was a 45 minute wait between two tiny meals. We both left hungry. The short ribs were good, but the portion size is so small that it wasn't even enough serving for one person let alone too. The chicken was OK way over fried. Also, I think it's very cheesy to not have filtered water and expect your patrons to order a huge bottle of sparkling or Stillwater water to up the charge of the bill instead of just filtering water and offering that as an option. We really wanted to like this place and wanted to make it a regular spot for us but unfortunately to charge that much and the portions being so small, small and tiny. We both left feeling disappointed and hungry. Also, really taking a back about how Social the staff was amongst each other and that was more important than people eating there. If these things are changed, we will give it another chance. The salad was rather bitter, but on the menu, it didn't describe the breadcrumbs which I would've preferred not to have eaten. We asked a couple of questions to the server and they didn't even know what was on the food and had to ask the Sheff, which is unusual since the menu is so small, not a lot to memorize.
