I've been to Sago a few times before, but tonight honestly stood out as my best visit yet. The food was incredible across the board, but what really made the night was the service. Aysha took care of us and was just amazing, super genuine, kind, and attentive in a way that didn't feel forced at all. We showed up a bit hangry, and she totally read the situation, helped guide us through the menu, and made some great recommendations. It really made a difference. But when I went downstairs, it was popping and kind of glad we didn't sit there because it was pretty loud. It was lit but if you're trying to have conversations, I think upstairs is best. Celebrated my aunt's birthday here, and we were all pleasantly surprised by how much we liked SAGO. The atmosphere is intimate and beautifully decorated. It feels very upscale. Our server was sweet but it took quite some time for us to place an order. For cocktails, we tried the N'9 (tequila with pineapple and coconut cream) and the N'10 (mezcal with passionfruit and lime flavors). Both were great and very refreshing. We got a bunch of dishes: nasi goreng (Thai-inspired fried rice), hamachi ceviche, fried chicken and caviar, and lobster bao buns. I really liked their non-fried options! The nasi goreng was so yummy. The hamachi ceviche was probably my favorite out of everything, since the hamachi was so buttery and fresh. We came here because of all the hype and it was pretty good! We sat upstairs on a really cool green couch and the waitstaff was sparse but accommodating. They're extremely attractive. You can't work here if you're not a 10! It's hard to concentrate on food when everyone is so good looking! OK, so about the food... Everything is Hella spicy so if you're sensitive, you might want to have a couple shots of tequila first Ha ha, I had some rosé champagne so I was good to go Bring it on! The cucumbers were great and I liked the tahini dressing so much I wanted to dip everything in it, including myself! Next course was the Hamachi Crudo, which looked like macaroni a.k.a. a mishmash of a presentation they need to work on. We had that delicious ahi tuna with gluten-free sesame chips aplenty. Very interesting concoction! I give them points for creativity! Next up was some Indonesian rice that BF ordered because it reminded him of his earlier days and he said it was great but I didn't eat it. I've been here three times now. for me to go back somewhere three times means it genuinely made me say wow, and sago does that consistently. the shrimp ceviche is a must. tried it for the first time on this last visit and it was perfect. the noodles and steak skewers are my repeat orders every single time. the salad that comes with the skewers and the dressing especially are so good. my friend thought it was too salty, I thought it was perfect. know your audience. the martini is worth getting. it comes with olive juice on the side so you control how dirty you want it. and it was served chilled, which for me is non negotiable. shareable plates make this place really fun. you get to try a lot and everything feels intentional. one miss this visit was the chicken and caviar. it came out soggy and slimy, genuinely inedible. we sent it back and they took it without issue, so kudos for that. might have just been an off night but worth noting. a few things to know going in: expect $20-30 per item. there's a 4% service charge added automatically that I didn't catch until after I paid. and double check your order before it arrives. they brought us rice instead of noodles, swapped it out no problem, but I ended up being charged for both at the end. just keep an eye on your bill. the vibe is unlike anything else in san diego right now. cool, fun, worth it despite the hiccups. read more

However, I would say it can a little louder if you prefer a quieter environment. We started off with their crispy broccolini, and it was one of my favorite dishes of the night! Upon arrival, the hostess said she'd seat us in a couple minutes. 22 minutes pass by, as we frequently tried checking in for updates about our table. It turns out the manager had given our table away to a different group. We were very hungry and obviously unhappy with the situation. A gal from my group insisted on a free round from the bar as we waited; thankfully, the hostess agreed. We were about to walk out. John is an absolute magician behind the bar - he can craft incredible cocktails in the blink of an eye. He also had calm and gentle energy throughout the whole order. We were finally seated at a table at 9:14pm. We ordered a variety of different shareable plates for the table and enjoyed each one! The ceviche was lovely and the steak kabobs were phenomenal! This was honestly one of the better meals I've had in a while - it was filling and flavorful. Icing on the cake? Our server was from Denver (fun full circle as we all traveled from the Mile High to Encinitas!). Noodles are bouncy and chewy. Let's start out with their staff. Loved them!! Everyone was so sweet and answered all our questions. We went for an early dinner and some drinks so it wasn't too crowded. Their staff was great with recommendations and just fun to talk to. The drinks were nice and refreshing. The no.1 is really light and so good. Lowest abv but honestly if you drink those throughout the night I'm sure it'll catch up to you because they're so easy to drink. We got their hamachi ceviche which was delicious with the puffed chips. The chicken karaage with caviar was really well marinated and flavored, but I wished it was more crispy. The tiger steak skewers were kinda same thing, good flavor but maybe could've been cooked better. The nasi goreng was really good. Super bold flavors and the egg on top was perfect. We really liked this spot for small bites and good drinks. It looked like it was picking up/filling out later at night. The first time we tried to come, they didn't have space for walk ins so we made a reservation this time. That's fun for a Friday night if you want to go out to a bar/lounge type of space. Noodles were good, nothing special. Steak skewers: it came with 2 skewers and a greed salad. The skewers were really good and tender. Since it had two we were able to share. Duck: this was a duck leg with rice topped with an over easy egg. Everything was cooked very well and who doesn't love a good egg yolk! Kimchi Marble Potatoes: just as it sounds, very good. Has a good spice to it. Broccolini: never received it... Overall presentation of each item we actually did receive was nice, colorful, and well plated. Here is why my rating is low... Service: our waiter was not good. He did refill our water once but someone else brought our water initially after asking us if we wanted tap or sparkling, but not once did he asked us if we needed anything. When we were done eating, (you could tell by the plates) he asked if we needed boxes. But didn't bother to ask if we wanted dessert. He came back with boxes and was ready for us to pay the check... I guess he needed us out of there, lol. When he showed us the bill, I told him, well, do you guys even have dessert, he said oh well we have a tiramisu, lol I actually love tiramisu but no thanks, we decided just to find else where to get dessert (ended up driving to another spot 17 min away). Looking at the bill, we told him the broccolini is on there... you never brought it out. He said, "oh, let me take it off." Not an apology or anything. He must have really wanted us out of there so fast lol. Also, I mentioned we were upstairs, they were moving around tables and chairs getting ready for another reservation, which seemed very chaotic. It was going on for a good 20 min. No biggie, just odd because all the back and forth while we were trying to eat and there was like 4 people trying to get this done. But our waiter was moving one of the chairs and bumped into my left arm and just looked me lol it was obvious he bumped into me lol but he didn't even say sorry. I just laughed it off. Me and my friends that we were getting punked or something? With everything going on but I guess that wasn't the case. My date had suggested the restaurant so we both had alot of fun studying the menu before our visit. It was an early evening dinner - I think the first hour of opening. Street Parking was ok that early weekend evening. Hostess was fine and seated us quickly. Ladies, their two seaters are mostly high tables and chairs. So it's uncomfortable if you're wearing a dress or skirt IYKWIM. I don't believe there's a/c as the restaurant seems more open to invite in air. Our server was sweet. We placed our order quickly as we knew exactly what we wanted. Unfortunately, their menu didn't match what they listed online so that was disappointing. We still ordered quite a bit. We tried: Lobster Bao Buns: - pretty presentation but small portion. The batter was light but you couldn't taste the lobster. It seemed more like a glorified fish taco (not a bad thing) Ceviche: - I think this was the hamachi ceviche which came with fried taro chips. The ceviche was *really really* sour/tart. It was uncomfortable to eat as the focus was entirely citrus forward. Fried Chicken And Caviar: - 5 good size pieces of battered fried chicken topped with pearly caviar. The presentation was simple (with a grilled? lemon in the center of plate). The dark meat chicken tasted freshly fried. I wasn't able to taste much of the kaluga caviar perhaps due to the stronger lemongrass aioli ( FYI - "this type of caviar a type of caviar produced from the Kaluga sturgeon (Huso dauricus) and its hybrids, particularly with the Amur sturgeon (Acipenser schrenckii). It is known for its large, firm, and lustrous eggs, and its rich, buttery flavor with a slightly nutty taste" - per google) Pork satay: - fail. This was stated to be pork belly but it was all lean pork served dry and cold The wagyu flank wasn't on the menu so we decided to end the night with just the above (and the food had been disappointing thus far). The food came out super quick so we finished eating in less than one hour. I think someone said each table has a 90min limit so they seem to pump out food as such.
