Sabo noodles. Half order of fries
Abigail P.

Really fun spot to hang out during the day. Prices aren't awful for location and portions are great. I tried the sabo vegan noodles and I paid an extra add on for the beyond meat on top Absolutely delicious!! So light and refreshing so so good. Id get this meal again.. Bathroom was clean. The service was great. You order at the bar then they bring you your food. The gentleman who took my order was a really genuine person

Lots of choices

This is the place to drink good beer in a great lounge. This place is a great place to enjoy delicious beer. A huge selection of fresh brewed beers, cocktails and a delicious cold brew coffee. They have a 'Happy Hour' - Monday thru Friday 11a- 5p. Works perfectly for lunch and afternoon breaks. We enjoyed both the cold brew coffee and their classic Spruce Tips Hazy IPA and the coffee stout. All of them were delicious. The lounge is very large yet not too loud. Lots of bar seating in addition to cozy corners and tables. Service is super friendly and efficient. Large open entrance keeps the space cool and breezy. Highly recommend spending afternoons here.

Crispy Brussels, somen noodle salad, truffle shuffle

Rolled into Modern Times this past Saturday. I loved the vibe indoors. Very chill place to relax and grab food and a beer. Service at the bar was good. I got a pumpkin beer which was delicious. The food was better than average for a brewery. I really enjoyed that the crispy Brussels were actually crispy and the sauce was delicious. The somen noodle salad was fresh and I think it could had a bit more flavor but it was good overall. I liked the flatbread however I didn't taste any truffle flavor and the flatbread was very heavy on the olives, so it may not be a great choice for someone who doesn't love olives. Overall solid spot!

Been to several Modern Times locations as big IPA fans, but loved this one for the expanded coffee and cocktail options! Made the experience feel more versatile. Alex was so hospitable and gave great recommendations. We did the somen salad and munch wrap for happy hour (11am-5pm) and it was perfect pairing with the fruited Orderville! Ambience was a vibe too -- decor reminded me of Stranger Things in the best way! Will definitely be back

Fun interior decor

My family and I have really enjoyed coming here over the years. Thus family and dog friendly lounge recently got an upgrade. Still very much retro themed, the decor has changed a bit. They got new furniture, and now sell vinyl records. their men also got redone. While I'm not excited to see the restaurant has adopted non-vegan items, I'm still happy to see most items are still plant based. One of the employees shared that they were struggling to make food sales to compete with neighboring restaurants. He said most customers don't give vegan options a chance. It makes me really sad to hear that. There are so many tasty vegan/plant based alternatives. The beer is always tasty here, and they have a few wine, non-alcoholic options too. We will definitely be back, and I hope more people are open to trying the plant based options as they are really tasty.

A spacious tavern serving a variety of beers on tap, in-house roasted coffee, and light meals to keep you and your party fed during your stay. Located along the busy street of 101, you'll find street parking when visiting Modern Times. With a huge storefront, you'll find plenty of seats inside ranging from those around the bar, large tables for bigger parties, and bleacher like seats for the casual hang out. The staff are quite welcoming and the bartender will take your food and drink order at the register. We came in during the early afternoon so it was a lot slower than a typical peak happy hour time. We didn't order food this time around and decided to simply enjoy their beer selection, which is quite vast and fresh off the tap. For those looking to enjoy something non-alcoholic, they have coffee roasted by their main roasting location in San Diego. They have bags of fresh beans for purchase as well which range from light to dark roasts. At the time, they were offering a special for Father's Day but I was simply interested in the bags (I wouldn't have been able to travel with the glass mug, unfortunately). For beer and coffee aficionados, you may have seen and tried their brews elsewhere within California so if you are a fan, get the taste straight from the source! In addition, for vinyl record collectors, they have some vintage for sale as well. I thought this was a nice touch to be included as part of their in-store experience. There were definitely some rare finds! Overall, Modern Times is a great place to meet up over a pint or two while getting your grub on. Their wide beer selection will surely satisfy most and for those with kids or non-drinkers, you'll be able to enjoy the atmosphere, too, with their selection of food and non-alcoholic drinks. The hospitality here is great and the vibe is very chill. With many other shops and eateries nearby, it's a very walkable place and can serve as a nice pit stop or destination for the day. There's no better time than a time at Modern Times!

Love all the vegan/vegetarian options on the menu! The smash burger with impossible meat and grilled onions was so delicious! The flatbreads were also really yummy and had great flavors. They have lots of great options for beers and everyone working there is super friendly! Very welcoming space and lots of seats.

Modern times used to be my favorite beer and it was so sad with all the selling and what not but to find this cool place with good vibes, drinks and food was amazing! It's a great location with great service and friendly faces and most importantly is DOG friendly! I already can't wait to come back!

Went here with a couple of my friends in the late afternoon/early evening one day and we absolutely LOVED the vibe! The drinks were great (I had the Cucumber Lime Boochcraft, my two girlfriends had flights of beer -- they loved all their beers, and thought the Pickle Pils was the most interesting!) and the food was super tasty! The only downside is I think the brussel sprouts may not have been cooked all the way through because I had a bit of a stomach ache from those afterwards... but I would DEFINITELY come here again -- great drinks, good food, super sweet staff! Ambiance: 10/10 Drinks: 9/10 Food: 8.5/10 Service: 10/10 Price: 9/10

What a great vibe in this funky large space where windows open to the sidewalk for that PCH breeze as you enjoy a brew. Service was excellent and our beers were cold and divine.

Went for happy hour and it was great! Such a cool ambiance and decor and the staff were super friendly! They have a great selection of beers and food we had the brussel sprouts that were so good! Happy hour is M-F 12-5!

I love Modern Times stouts! If you're a fan of big, barrel aged stouts, you'd love those from Modern Times. They also have IPAs and others if you're into those. Food: Fully vegan menu. We got the noodle salad with impossible beef and it was bomb! The beef reminded me of Korean bulgogi. The noodle was cold (perfect in sweltering summer day) and the dressing was light and refreshing. Decor: The place is decorated in a 60's/70's TV dinner theme. It's really cute. The wooden colors set the chill-out mode and the space feels very open and welcoming.

Soba noodle salad

I've come here a couple of times for lunch and although the mid-century modern decor and friendly employees make this place appealing to visit, I have not enjoyed the few dishes I have tried. Their vegan smash burger is lacking in flavor, and the soba noodle salad I tried most recently I could not finish at all. I was quite disappointed as it sounded like a refreshing dish, but the dressing tasted like straight up vinegar and overpowered the other flavors.

Ask the Community - Modern Times Far West Lounge

Is this MT location still open? Sadly many of them have closed as the brewery was bought out by a Hawaiian brew

Yes it is... and it better not close! One of my fave restaurants in Encinitas :)

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, they are indeed allowed. I take my dog in several times a week. The person that answered the dogs are not allowed is incorrect.

Is outside food allowed?

No, the place is a full restaurant.

Are any menu items fully vegan, organic and gluten free?

The entire menu is fully vegan. Not sure about organic or gluten free items

Do you have to be 21+ to enter?

They were carding yesterday, Friday August 2nd.

Is reservation needed?

No reservations, we are first come, first served! As others have commented, we tend to be busy especially at 5pm to close. We suggest coming a bit earlier and scoping out a spot. If we reach capacity (which we sometimes do), there is a line until… Read more

Do you guys serve any coffee on tap at this location?

We do have our Black House cold brew on tap, as well as a variety of cans available, at the Far West Lounge!

Can you please share what brand cheese you use for the potato croquettes? I have tried so many vegan cheeses but this was incredibly tasty! (Visited 3 times in one week)

Hi Crystal! We use Follow Your Heart American cheese for our croquettes. We’re glad you like them!

Is there anything gluten reduced/free?

We have several items including a salad and some minor adjustments that can be done for gluten reduced food options. As for beverages, wines and cider are gluten free.

We ended up grabbing seats at the bar, which was a great choice. We ordered the: *Fig Burger with Brussels Sprouts: the Brussels sprouts were phenomenal. They had what tasted like pecans, some kind of glaze, and cheese... seriously so good. The Fig Burger itself was just as impressive with such a unique combo and absolutely delicious. *Steak Sandwich with Onion Rings: this was also a standout. Perfectly cooked, super flavorful, and came with a great dipping sauce that really tied it all together. The onion rings were crispy and on point too. First off, I love that they offer a variety of sides (sweet potato fries, truffle fries, mac & cheese, Brussels sprouts, etc.), though most come with a small upcharge. We had a few drinks and even grabbed a bottle of wine from the bar to take back to our Airbnb, which was a nice bonus. The vibe was relaxed with TVs playing highlights from a basketball game, and the bartender/server was awesome. Parking was easy with free street parking, though that might've been because it was late and a holiday. Only heads up: definitely call ahead about kitchen and closing times, especially on holidays. Online said they close at midnight, but they were actually closing at 11 PM. We were told over the phone the kitchen closed at 9:45 PM, but when we arrived at 9:30 PM, it had just switched to last call. Thankfully, they were kind enough to still get our order in. Overall, phenomenal food, great service, and a solid spot worth checking out. Would definitely come back.

I guess you could call it a bit of a girl dinner (or snack) - aperol spritz + onion rings. The vibes were great, especially the back patio area. And our server was fantastic. So why, you might ask, only 4 stars in my review. Two reasons: 1). Management has prohibited giving a splash of a beer for someone to sample. Bottom line is that I wanted to order a pint of beer, but I wanted a splash of a couple of beers to try to make my decision. They refused, saying that one must buy a 5oz taster if one wants to taste the beer. I find that policy offensive. In the end I bought a taster to taste the Chuuurch, and then bought an additional pint after. It just seems nickel and dimey, and would be asking to an ice cream place not allowing one to sample their ice creams before buying a cone. I hope management reconsiders this policy. 2. My wife got the Hot Mess Fries and was disappointed not only in the flavor, but also in the misleading advertising. On the menu it specifically said that there was bacon in the fries, but in fact what they put on the fries was either chunks of ham or "Canadian bacon" (which as we all know is a very different thing from "bacon"). If they were or of regular bacon, the kitchen should have told the server this so he could have asked her if she wanted ham as a substitute. And, of they always use ham instead of bacon, them the menu needs to be changed to reflect that.

My favorite stop on my recent trip to the San Diego area…read more Encinitas Fish Shop was recommended by one of my local SD work colleagues. I grabbed an Uber after work on a Thursday and headed north 11 miles. As I arrived at the Fish Shop, I could smell the goodness inside and saw the line waiting to order. The restaurant is on one side, with an open bar on the other. Ordering is as simple as 1, 2, 3. Pick your fish, pick how you want to consume it (plate, sandwich, salad), and pick your sides and drink. I went with my work colleagues recommendation of a blackened sea bass sandwich with onion rings and a Marg. That choice was FANTASTIC!!! You seat yourself once you order and place the buzzer given to you by the counter person on the unit on your table. Although busy, there were still tables available (bar and restaurant, plus out front). As the NBA playoffs were on, I sat inside. Everyone working here was friendly and as I already stated... my meal was the best I had on this San Diego visit. A bonus was a gorgeous sunset just 3 blocks down from the shop. I will be back to Encinitas Fish Shop when I next visit San Diego.

It had been a while since I'd had oysters and it sounded really good. Years ago, when I lived in…read morePacific Beach I used to go to their Thursday $1 oyster night at that location. I moved to North County and a few years later they opened Encinitas fish shop. I have been for the oysters in the past but it had been a long time. I looked it up to make sure they still had oyster night and sure enough they do. The price is now $1.25 but that still feels like a good deal. They had 4 different types to choose from. There was only about 7 people in front of me when I got in line including a family. There was an older couple ordering and it took about 20 minutes for them to complete their transaction. The rest of the line moved ok after they were done, but I probably waited about 40 minutes just to order. I ordered 3 of each kind, a dozen. Then I went to get water. They were out of ice. I sat in the window seating and waited. It took a bit, but it was a nice day so I didn't mind too much. A girl came out calling names but it was very difficult to hear her. I finally heard my name and she dropped off my oysters. I asked for more cocktail sauce and she left to get it. She brought it back but immediately left and never told me which oysters were which. I had to flag down another employee and he told me which oysters were which. In the past, I haven't liked some of the choices, but this time they had a whole different selection and I liked all of them! They were so good and fresh. I don't know why I waited so long to return. I'll definitely be back for more soon!
