Stopped in the Daley Double on a Saturday afternoon. Totally cool little dive bar. First off Tab our bartender was one cool cat. Funny dude too! Oh, and don't waste your time with any "bar tab" jokes with Tab. Trust me, he's heard them all. No tap beer here, only bottles. No problem, Becky and I don't mind cracking a Pacifico on occasion ($4). Pretty big bar with comfortable stools and some booths along the wall. The Jack Daniels logo on the felt on the pool table was cool. The bathroom was horrible. I really don't expect much out of bathrooms in my dive bars. It was relatively empty of day drinkers so we were able to chit-chat and joke around with Tab. Just a fun, old-school dive bar. read more

The staff were friendly. Came here on a Sunday night and just a few people inside which honestly was nice. Played pool..they were super accommodating and came over to readjust the table for us as it was hard to shoot from certain angles. I will say, the Pool table area was pretty dirty and sticky. The bathroom needed some maintenance as well but what do you expect from a dive bar? I absolutely do not get the attraction of this place. On a Friday or Saturday night there is a freaking line down the street. For this crap bar? It's a cave of a place that hasn't had a remodel since it opened around 50 years ago. And that includes the plumbing. There are no beers on tap and they have a back patio but you are NOT ALLOWED TO BRING YOUR DRINKS THERE!!!!!!!! they will kick you out. WTF is the point of having a patio then? You can smell the bar's ass right when you walk in this place. I love me a dive bar but this one is beyond the sewer dive. So if you decide to visit this establishment you will need to bring your galoshes and gas mask in case you are brave enough to venture the toilet area. read more

Saloon is a decent dive bar type joint with fairly stiff drinks, interesting clientele and some decent music playing in the background. This place isn't necessarily my first choice of bars but is a nice option to get started on your night out. The bartenders pour some stiff drinks but tend to be a bit dismissive until the tip comes. The location is awesome but the place itself has a fairly dark feel to you, I mean literally everything in this place at night is dark... Kinda makes me wonder about the cleanliness with the lights on lol. Nevertheless, have been here several times to throw back some Hendricks and a beer or two and good times can be had. I don't like this place anymore. I used to LOVE it and I mean LOVE it, as in every week, all night, get dressed up and excited over gin n tonics and PBRs and came here the other night, and felt so out of place. Maybe I'm not young and naive anymore or so hip on trends, but the bartenders are just douchey. I don't know what to say, they were never nice when I came before and they still aren't now. The place looks nicer though, everything except the front door intimidating you that you will be arrested for a DUI if you drink (which I'm sure half the people do anyway). It's an ok place. Says they open at 6:00 pm on Saturdays. We came 15 minutes till 6:00, figured we would just wait the 15 minutes since we found great parking... We waited and waited... finally left around 6:30 as they never unlocked the door. They turned on the music, turned the TV on, and they were behind the bar with two older people sitting at the bar, yet they never opened the door, nor would they answer the phone. We watched at least 15 people come try to open the door in the 30 + minutes that we waited. Lots of lost business, won't be back because who knows when they actually open. read more

This is a great local bar that's dark (black walls), but clean and clutter free. Some of the booths are a bit worn and the tables old, but the bar tenders, Tab for one, are friendly and approachable. The pool table in the back has a new Jack Daniels felt. There isn't a long wait to play and the pool is free. The pool sticks are in good condition. Every night at 9:00 the jukebox is turned off and the DJ starts to spread the love. Hump days bring you live music. There's plenty of room in the bar to dance and grind. read more

Pathetic. Looked forward to going into a great dive bar, they are usually some of my fav places. This had the potential to be great. It smelled of three day old throw up (not the bad kind) and my shoes stuck to the floor (also not a bad thing). Place was empty except one other patron who seemed to have been sitting in that chair since 2008. You know the housing crash... I'm going to get to the point. The bartender. WTF, man has a power complex. The guy first made sure we knew this was his place by walking out from behind the bar to card us. This was done with dickish intention, no "hello", no "hey, how's your day"? Just a North Korean, "where's your papers". We obliged. After we settled, we went to the bar to order. We waited. We waited. We waited. All the time we waited, this human stood at the end of the bar with his unconfirmed barback and watched videos on his phone. Showing unconfirmed barback and pointing things out as they happened with gleeful excitement. We waited. We watched them. We waited. Looked. Wait. We realized that he wasn't going to budge. The time came for us to bid this shack adieu. Being in the business I can't understand why a business owner would keep this man on staff." I think you have to be a certain kind of barfly to enjoy a place like this. I came here with a friend to drink until we couldn't feel feelings anymore, and it was actually kind of hard to do that here. The place gets RIDICULOUSLY crowded early on, and it quickly becomes one of those "how much money do I have to flash in my cleavage to get the bartender's attention" situations. With all the people, it gets fucking hot and fucking loud, with a DJ on top of it, don't try to tell me things because my ass is just going to hear many different kinds of BURRRRRRRR while I get hammered. Street parking, enjoy that (obligatory call a cab). If you like to dance, you won't be near the bar, which is fine, if you don't actually care about having alcohol. Drinks aren't cheap at all. Not even standard. I ran up a bar tab of $150 for 6 shots and 3 mixed drinks. Balls. Come here loaded, and double fist double drinks. Or get 4 beers at once. That way you won't have to make your way through a sea of drunk individuals more than is absolutely necessary. One perk was that it's a short walk to 7-11, where I enjoyed a slushee after leaving. I would give less then a star if I could. I used to really dig this place. I would come a lot but I moved out of the area but recently came back and wanted to wander into my old spot. Interestingly enough I ordered a water for myself (wasnt drinking) and Jack & Cokes for a couple other people. Bartender says "water?" I say yes and 2 Jack and cokes. Bartender gives me my drinks and water then points at me. I turn around and 2 bouncers drag me out of the place. I of course paid first. I ask WTF just happened and the little short douche of a bouncer says you are slurring your words. I said thats interesting because I am not drinking. Little short douche walks back in. Still utterly confused (I have never ever been thrown out of any bar before in my entire life) I ask the doorman again "Sorry man I dont mean to be a d!ck but I am just still really confused as to what the buck just happened. I have not even been drinking. You can smell my breath. Doorman seems to understand and gives me the thumb to wander back in. Little short douche walks back out and gets into an argument with me saying I am drunk a a$$hole. To the point now where I want to fight the guy. Thankfully my 2 friends who were looking for me wander out and pull me away. Little douche says have a nice night a$$hole to which I reply Yes I am an a$$hole but your the one working as a bouncer at a sh!t bar. Never again will I go to the Saloon. Go to Peabodys. Well first and foremost, I am no stranger to this place. I am not proud of this, I just live way to close to here to not come here often. I have cut back a lot lately due to just being burnt out of coming here. Tip 1) If you are coming here on a Thursday, it may seem dead but will be full by midnight. It never fails, go in around 1030, no one really in the bar. Order a drink or 2, look up and out of no where it is packed. Thursday is also a good night to people watch. Tip 2) If you are going on a Friday or Saturday it is best to get there no later than 1030 pm. If you come any later than that you will be waiting in line and some nights the line can be 20 minutes or longer. Tip 3) This bar gets super crowded on weekends and you will get stepped on and bar tenders have no problem taking their time getting to you so when you order a drink make it count. Unless you are a regular and know the bartender these are the guide lines to follow to having fun at the saloon. This bar is long and narrow so enjoy the journey through and take note at the different types of people you see from thee entrance to the bathrooms. Get in where you fit in, grab a fireball shot and enjoy!! read more

Came to the Daily Double after a Yelp brunch Event at D Street (yeah, I know this review is waaaaay overdue)... We were already drinking a bit before coming over, but trudge on, right!? Anyhow, the place was nearly empty, and the bartender, Tab, was pretty much all ours for most of the visit. He was on top of it the whole time. Meg fiddled with the jukebox, while (excuse me while i name-drop) Robert, Jae, Ruggy, Julia, and I hung out playing pool (in mine and Julia's cases pretty badly), and drinking cocktails. I don't have much to say about the look of the bar. It's pretty non-descript, with white tiles, a long fully stocked bar, and two pool tables. There were some other booths on the side, and a smoking patio (which felt more like a courtyard for another business.) The bathroom was graffiti'd up and small, with a door that seemed not to close on the main area where the sink was (there was a swinging door for the stall itself, thank goodness, as I am no exhibitionist.) Toward the end of our stay (which lasted five or so hours) Tab allowed us to order pizza, and even provided some plates and napkins for it. Unexpected, but really a bonus. He's a stand-up dude. If I'm ever in Encinitas, which almost never happens, I'll go back in and give him a high-five. Thanks Tab, for getting me drunk and giving us styrofoam tableware. read more

The Daley Double is often referred to as The Saloon. This is because it is a saloon. Really. It also says SALOON outside real big. Anyway, the reason that I think it is fair to call this a Saloon as opposed to a bar is that it really has kept its feel of being an old time establishment. It is nice to see a little bit of Encinitas holding on as the La Jollafication takes place downtown. This is one of the little bits of Old Encinitas that is suviving. It is a GREAT Saloon. It is a GREAT place to drink. The Saloon makes me happy. read more

I have been to this bar on several occasions, including last new years eve and always had a decent time. After our experience there this new years eve, none of us will ever be going back. I showed up early, and asked the two bouncers if any of the booths were reserved, they told me that they don't reserve booths there so I could pick anyone I wanted. I did and within 30 minutes we were kicked out of our booth for a reservation. We were the only people kicked out of a booth and of course the rest were all filled up. A bouncer did his best to get us enough bar stools so we could relocate to the bar. After a while another booth opened up so we moved in and took it over. We were comfortable there for about 3 hours until within a minute after midnight we are getting kicked out of our booth again and our brand new round of full drinks were pulled off the table and discarded of. We were told there was a reservation so we had to move. My fiance tried to have a calm conversation with the guy moving in on our booth so we could try to at least keep our full drinks and the guy told him he was a partner of the bar and shoved him in the chest!!!! The bouncer offered to kick someone out of another booth so we could move to a new one and offered to get us a new round of drinks but at that point there was no hope to saving this experience. I just wanted to close out my tab and leave. Unfortunately the bartender refused to adjust my bill for the full drinks that had been taken away, the poor bouncer even pulled out his wallet and offered to pay for it himself. We weren't going to let him do that so I just wrote a big ZERO on my tab and a nice little note about how I was refusing to pay and would dispute the charge with my credit card company. None of us will EVER go back to this place and unless you want to be treated like a piece of crap by no one less than one of the business partners, I suggest you don't take your chances and just go to one of the other, way better, establishments that surround this one. read more

The place is okay, decent music but very busy on weekends. I end up shoulder to shoulder with everyone in the place and it's one of those places where I need to practically yell in my friend's ear to have a conversation. It's hard to squeeze through the crowd to get to the bar. I've been here several times, and normally I'd give it 2 or 3 stars, but my last experience left me feeling cheated. I came in on a busy night, ordered a drink for me and a girl I came with. I asked them to close it out, but the bartender convinced me to keep it open by saying there's a $2 close out charge every time. So I end up leaving the place, (and my credit card!) after the one drink for me and one for my friend. I realize this the next morning, so I swing by at around 1pm to pick it up, and I see a $30 charge on the receipt, which has no detail. I ask the bartender how much a Stone IPA and a vodka soda costs? I said I didn't know the brand of the vodka since I just asked for a vodka soda and he said it wouldn't be more than 6 or 7 bucks. $4.50 for the Stone. Not sure where the other charges came from, but he seemed to think I drunkenly forgot what I'd ordered, which adds a bit of insult to financial loss. I'll probably be back at some point because D street is lame and Keno's closes early, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth! read more

A super DIVE bar. Great tunes. Cool people. My birthday fell on a Monday and what better way then to celebrate it at the Saloon for "Dirty Mondays". They always let a group of girls come in, so if you're a dude you probably have to wait in line. Getting girls in there is their first priority. Sorry dudez. You get the dive bar ambiance right when you walk in. There is no lighting, completely dark. The place looks old like back in the old Western times.There is a pool table and the bathrooms next to them are atrocious. I mean you can't expect much, but seriously these bathrooms are bad. The bathrooms are a coke whore's dream. I think they are remodeling them right now, THANK GOD. As a girl, you'll always experience the "creepers", and most of them that are there look like surf bums or skaters. I love this place solely because of the music and the people. You always end up meeting cool people that live in your area. The DJ performing usually plays electro/indie/nu-disco/80s/old school on the weekends. Downside: Small dance floor.They also have "secret shows" that are invite only. Crystal Castles performed there recently, and the Twelves have made an appearance. read more

I've given this place 2 attempts to prove me wrong and it's just not my cup of tea. Obviously it's a fun place for a lot of people b/c both times that I've been here it's been completely packed. The layout of the bar makes it really hard to stand around without someone spilling their drink on you. The sewage smell that consumes the bar every 30 minutes or so is enough to make you throw your drink up. In their defense, the staff and security staff seemed nice enough - but I'm a girl so what do I know about rude bouncers. :) I love Encinitas and am looking forward to venturing out to try other places. I must say, after coming here for my first time a few weeks ago, I was pretty disappointed. I had come here with a few of my friends and my girlfriend. And immediately upon walking up the two bouncers told us we had to wait to go in because of "capacity." While waiting, groups of girls were constantly let in immediately solely because they had no males with them. I could understand such things if I were in vegas or even downtown but doing such things at a small, out dated little bar I felt was unnecessary. Upon finally getting in, the wait just to get a drink was just like the wait to get in. Literally only got served if you are a female. There are some hot guys here and for that reason alone I will be back. Note to the ladies: they are typically super wasted and slightly douchey BUT nice to look at and the more you drink the less douchey they get; the problem is I could down 7 cocktails at other establishments in the time it takes me to get 1 here so pre -drink ladies and stick to double fisting. I really can't stand any of the other bars on this Encinitas drag and you can sometimes catch a dancefloor here so this one wins by defalut of me living in North County and not wanting to drive into San Diego to drink and flirt. read more

The bouncer freaked me out though!! He pushed a drunk bum so hard outside of the saloon that the bum's head cracked open on the pavement. After a while he got up- probably with a serious concussion - no help from the bouncer and stumbled down the street with blood dripping from his head... I suggest not going out for a smoke--- this really upset me and ruined my night because the bouncer was so violent. The ruckus was so loud and no one could get in and out of the bar for a while- out of being scared and the constant fighting situation. Before I turned 21 I swore I would never step foot into this place; mainly because you can smell the urine, beer, and puke from outside the front door... even when they're closed. But, of course, once you finally give in it turns into a love-hate relationship. I'm 26 now and I'm back to the "I sweat I'll never step foot in there" mind set. It's a dive bar so go in with NO EXPECTATIONS and you won't be disappointed. Don't wear your favorite shoes, they will stick to the floor, someone will step on them, and drinks will shatter on the floor and ruin them. If you go on a weeknight, heck, if you go on any night, make sure you stop at Urban Outfitters first and just take the first outfit you see of the manniquin so you fit in. Hipster city ladies and gentleman. They DO finally let you use credit cards, and they remodeled the ladies bathroom which is nice. There's a toilet seat now, soap, toilet paper, and even doors. Now if they could just get that patio finished. I would comment on their bartenders but just in case I want to go back I want to still be let in... see... love... hate.... read more

Oh man this spot is a dive bar amongst dive bars. Everything from selling beer in a can to the low light atmosphere and sticky bar counter just amplifies that divey experience. Wifey loves this place, I am not always wild to come here but when I do cave in we always end up having a great time. The music is less trendy than you hear at the clubs these days so you will get a good hit of hip-hop, some top 40 and good amount of old school goodies. The room is much longer than it is wide so when it packs out, and it packs out, the walk to the bathroom can take a while. The bartenders have always been super friendly and quick on making drinks. The crowd is chill and always having a great time. I didn't get the impression of too many of any specific group, just a bunch of folks having a great time to good music and drink specials. If you go during the week you will note how empty it is but it really gives you a chance to take in the atmosphere so I recommend hitting the bar on weeknights for a few drinks. They have booth seating all along the side and a Juke Box for music when they don't have a DJ spinning. Definitely worth a visit and it stays open longer than D-street!! read more

This place boasts a large sprawling bar and a mural to match it on the opposite wall. My BF and I stopped by here after a yummy dinner up in the north county. We caught the end of happy hour which makes me and my pocket book happy as well. The jukebox is full of great music, and the drinks were nice and stiff. If you are into pool they offer a table in the back of the bar, so you can get your game on. With a patio on the side of the building, so if you fancy a cigarette it is just calling your name. Bartenders were nice and on top of it, and there is plenty of dance space or side booths if you need a sit. My only down would have to be, that I didn't see any beers on tap. The bouncers are really big tools that have been granted too much control of the establishment.They think they're running some type of Gas Lamp Hipster Bar... We can let them have their fantasy. One of the last great dive bars and very reminiscent of those I frequented back in the Lower East Side of NYC. Locals refer to it as The Saloon but it attracts people from all over the country. The drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is always on. They have a pool table that is always in use and you even have to que up on certain nights to get in. On any given night you'll find a mix of college kids and business folk mingling and most likely talking about the surf. They also have a great Jutebox. read more

Dive bars make me feel happy inside because we don't have to fit in with any particular crowd. We can be us, which is the best way to be! Anyways, getting back to the Saloon, I have been coming to this bar for the last... decade. It's like my own personal "Cheers" bar! I have made friends with the crowd, my buddy is the bartender and I haven't had a problem with anyone here. I am a local Encinitas girl, born and raised. Encinitas has changed a lot and become way more crowded. The Saloon is our local bar. I love the fact that we have one dive that we can be proud of! So much of the downtown Encinitas scene has become so hipster and upscale. I like that this place stays true to it's roots. They upgraded the bathrooms, although still a little dark but honestly who WANTS to see themselves under fluorescent lights in a dive bar? The music in the Jukebox is fun and has a great variety, the service is friendly even when my friend isn't tending bar. They DO take credit cards. Some nights can get crowded, but isn't that how most places are on a Friday or Saturday night? Go in early if you don't like the crowds! It's overall a great, hometown, divey bar. A fine place - not a dive bar. More of a Silverlake/Eastside LA bar smack in the middle of Coast Highway. There really isn't too much to say. The Good: Clean, nice booths, bar stools, TV Screens, music, DJ's The bad: About five too many bouncers. Really - take it down a notch. Bartenders they'll pour but they don't seem to remember. This place has been here forever and a day, and you should respect it just for that. Despite what some other yelpers have said, the ambience is classic...murals of early Encinitas, the Wild West...tile floors...mahogany walls that've seen better days...something historic in a town with little history. I watched it go from a dive bar in the 80's frequented by hippies, surfers, weirdos, and hard-boiled reporters, to the place we all hung out after high school in the 90's, to its current incarnation--a flashy dive, but with all kinds of kooks still in the mix. The only downside is there's a lot of fights, this town's major flaw. Everyone is so mellow by day, but they're repressing something. Like that Seinfeld episode, "serenity now leads to insanity later..." Full-on fights with fists flying can break out any moment, the later and drunker the better. Maybe I'm exaggerating, maybe not, depends on what night you go...but it does give it an element of danger, and that's what u want in a dive. read more
