Santana Burger medium rare was 5 stars all the way, and the fruits that accompanied it were damn good as well. The Kern brewing Chuuuch IPA was also 5 stars for my taste buds. And our server was fantastic. So why, you might ask, only 4 stars in my review. Two reasons: 1). Management has prohibited giving a splash of a beer for someone to sample. Bottom line is that I wanted to order a pint of beer, but I wanted a splash of a couple of beers to try to make my decision. They refused, saying that one must buy a 5oz taster if one wants to taste the beer. I find that policy offensive. In the end I bought a taster to taste the Chuuurch, and then bought an additional pint after. It just seems nickel and dimey, and would be asking to an ice cream place not allowing one to sample their ice creams before buying a cone. I hope management reconsiders this policy. 2. My wife got the Hot Mess Fries and was disappointed not only in the flavor, but also in the misleading advertising. On the menu it specifically said that there was bacon in the fries, but in fact what they put on the fries was either chunks of ham or "Canadian bacon" (which as we all know is a very different thing from "bacon"). If they were or of regular bacon, the kitchen should have told the server this so he could have asked her if she wanted ham as a substitute. And, of they always use ham instead of bacon, them the menu needs to be changed to reflect that. read more

We scored a spot outside and enjoyed the view while wishing we could try every single beer on the extensive menu. We stuck to drafts and, even then, it was so hard to choose. We saw this place and just pulled over for a bite to eat and of course a beer. Super casual local spot. Food wasn't that bad. We split a patty melt with cheese (we asked for bacon but they forgot it was still good). The Parmesan garlic fries were ok. The staple buffalo wings were cool. Family was in town and I saw they are closing next year. It was a busy night so we sat outside. The server was super nice and friendly. It was cold and there are no heat lamp outside. To me this is one of the best places in Encinitas. The ambiance is casual and most importantly it's doggy friendly. It has a great selection of beer and the food is the best part. The gourmet burgers are delicious and the portions are very generous. When I go, I usually split a burger, my favorite is the New Zealand grass fed wagyu and sweet potatoes fries to accompany with. The clams are the best and they make it with a garlic sauce ideal for dipping with bread. I've heard the iron steak is great and I'll try it next time I go. The staff is the friendliest. They'll take your order, strike up a conversation, always asking how's the food and if you need anything else. One time they made a patty for my dog. This is my regular place to go and it should be yours too! read more

I used to love this place. But it has really gone downhill. I had the Enci Chicken Sandwich and it was so greasy I couldn't even eat the bread, I had to eat the chicken with a fork. I would have sent it back but I was afraid they would spit in my food because the waitress was not accommodating at all. This is the only beer place that charges money for a tasting of beer. My girlfriend and I were walking around in the local fair and got hungry so we chose this place. Looked nice and friendly. Sarah the cute bartender was so sweet and friendly. Went here on my 21st birthday and it was a great decision. Our servers Kenzie and Lauren were absolutely spectacular. They worked their butts off getting our food, engaging with us in conversation, and getting us out quick. They both deserve a raise. The food was good as well. The burgers are large and fries well seasoned. The tuna poke tower was delectable. The vibe of the ale house was A1. It was a small but lively setting with good character. This tiny spot makes me so so happy! A fantastic specialty beer list with great draft options and also hundreds of bottles of Belgian delights. It was so fun picking different ones to try. I stopped in for early supper on a Friday afternoon. The atmosphere was casual and friendly and I enjoyed the joking around by the regulars. Lots of friendly folks and dogs. They have an incredible beer selection, and I know they occasionally have drop in specials like Pliny. Had a Delirium Tremens on tap - remember when you couldn't find these anywhere. Tasted perfect. Then a Kern River Lhazy River, which was smooth and citrus, just great for a warm afternoon (their fan wasn't working so it was a little muggy). Chased that with chimichurri steak which was terrific! It looked impressive (like 4 to 5 inches high), but it turned out it was that high due to all the lettuce clippings they stacked on top of the meat. And it was $19.50! Whatever your religious convictions, rising from the dead is no easy task. So when Encinitas Ale House was closed after a kitchen fire in 2021, I feared that Encinitas had lost one of its true hidden and still largely "locals" gems permanently. And there was a lot to mourn. It's not often you can walk into a small bar and at once feel both at home and overwhelmed. A dizzying array of draughts lined the back walls of the bar, with rotating local, national and international beers on tap. And in spite of that, the interior was warm and intimate. Except for the occasional loud patron expostulation about whatever sporting event played on the bar tv's, the atmosphere was relaxed and chill. The draw of course was always on the beer. Quite apart from the many on tap choices, EAH had an impressive collection of beers from America and abroad. Local microbrews were well-represented (especially Carlsbad Brewing, which is also owned by the proprietor). Belgian whites were its forte and, as an old Chimay fan from way back, I tipped my hat to this particular specialty. The menu also boasted hearty American bar fare: burgers and pizzas, sandwiches and daily soups, and many of the typical appetizer/munchies that go with the imbibing of mildly alcoholic potables. What separated their kitchen from other such establishments was the quality of the food served. The ingredients were fresh and of good quality, and there was just enough of a culinary twist on some pretty common grub to make it something a little out of the ordinary. Why serve a chicken vegetable soup, for example, when you can serve a chicken pozole verde? Best of all for a local: although popular, EAH largely avoided the visitor crowds that populate establishments further north on the 101. While I am glad that local businesses get a lot of customers, there was something nostalgic about walking into a place that avoids the slicker hubbub of more upscale spots. Throughout this review, I have been writing in the past tense, because I had feared that like many other eateries and bars I have loved, it would not come back from catastrophe. But miracles do happen! Not only has EAH reopened to the public (with still limited hours, alas), but the food and beer remain excellent. I am overjoyed that walking through their doors, it has remained largely the same. I always considered myself something of an agnostic, but Encinitas Ale House has made me a believer. I came here on a weekday night after hearing about their selection of over 500 beers, many of which are specialty and limited-release beers. I tried two of their draft Belgium beers. One was the Russian river dark ale, and the other was the Carlsbdad Brewing Co strong blonde. Both drafts were good, but I prefer the Carlsbad one more than the other. I also had traditional Irish fish and chips. The fish was beer battered and fried and came with steak cut fries, lemon, and tartar sauce. The portion size was huge, and I liked the fried fish and fries. Overall a great place to visit to taste some excellent draft and bottled beer. This is a place that you can easily walk by when strolling through Encinitas! However, do not sleep on this spot! It is dog friendly with patio seating and very friendly staff. We did not have to wait long at all to get seated and our waitress was very attentive! Love that this play has shoe string fries because I feel those are hard to come by these days. I ordered the waygu sliders and was not disappointed. They also have an assortment of different fries and onion rings you can order by the basket.
