Truly, one of the hidden gems of Solana Beach. Tucked in a little courtyard sits the pill box and if you know it, you know it and if you don't know it, you should know it. Fantastic menu something for everybody, you want a burger, best! You want it all day breakfast burrito again fantastic. How about a mahi salad?, yep! Patio or inside a great place to people watch and eat. Our server today was Kiley and she was just perfect. We haven't been in a little bit. Hope we'll be back right away. My husband and I came here on a Thursday night since we were in the area. We were able to find a parking spot in the parking area for the shopping strip. The place was busy but we were able to find a spot at the bar to order food. The bartender took our order and it came out in a reasonable amount of time. I ordered the beer battered fish and chips which were battered nicely and came with a small container of tartar sauce. My husband ordered the Shrimp Al Mezcal and he enjoyed it very much. The sauce had good flavor and the shrimp was nicely cooked. Overall the food was great. Great casual neighborhood spot. read more

Driven by this corner so many times and never noticed this little tavern tucked away at this busy intersection. Fortunately we decided to stop by after hiking nearby and wanting a snack. We found parking on the side streets in the back (probably not easy on a weekend since this is close to the beach). The menu is better than what you would expect for bar/tavern. We enjoyed a salad and a sandwich. They have a good craft beer menu that rotates as well with local selections. They have several TV screens so would make a good viewing place for the big game. Nice spot with a good amount of seating near the beach. Food was interesting. Got the baja chicken salad and although I did enjoy it, it could be a pretty strange flavor combo. It had tender chicken drenched in bbq sauce sitting on top of lettuce, corn, black beans, onions, and tortilla strips mixed with ranch. Initially the bbq sauce was overwhelming, but after mixing with the ranch it got tastier. Chicken was crazy tender, on some bites I thought I was eating canned tuna. Just wished there was more corn or beans added. The waitress was really friendly. And I enjoyed the tall glass of pineapple juice, very generous. read more

This tavern has fantastic food!!! Solana Beach is lucky to have such a great place to dine!!! I was in the area and walked into the Saddle Bar to order lunch. They did not have a kitchen for food, but the bartender highly recommended the Pillbox Tavern which was nearby. Boy, was he ever right!! The cheeseburger was excellent. My husband loved it!! There were a lot of people having a late lunch and all of them raved about the food!! We will return and sample other selections on their menu another time. read more

They were out of the happy hour Mac and cheese though :(. The only issue I had was when eating outside there was no lighting. However, they do have heaters available if needed. This tiny space packs a punch! We visited on a holiday Monday and they were busy. The great location was a plus. The service was great - fast and friendly. We ordered various beers and cocktails and burgers, wings, Cobb salad and fish n chips. The kung pao wings and fish n chips were the favorites. The fries and ranch were also great. A great little dive to start some sport watching with. I've been there multiple times. It is quite busy at times. Bartenders are attentive, hard to get a seat. Lots of bar food, which isn't the healthiest but what do you expect. Fun times. read more

Really good food and great service! It's nice that this is a sports bar, but they have some healthier options (The Pillbox Plate, Chicken Tortilla Soup, House Made Chili, Tuna Sandwich, BBQ Chicken Salad) Their potato skins are (10/10)- crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. And, all of their dipping sauces are so, so good. The ranch, avocado Caesar, BBQ and honey mustard are my favorites. Small space, but it's perfect to watch the game and get some good food. I do recommend bringing a sweater or jacket, the doors/windows are usually open and it can be pretty breezy. read more

My girlfriends and I stopped by for dinner. This tavern is super close to the beach (we had a short walk to the beach after dinner). They have indoor and outdoor seating. Our waiter was very funny and friendly. I tried their french fries and chicken teriyaki dish. The fries were delicious. They came out super hot and have a flavorful seasoning. My friends & I dined here before a show at the Belly Up (which is walking distance). We came during Tuesday Happy Hour, which had great deals on drinks & apps. We felt like their drinks are more on the weaker side & the food was just mid, nothing really stood out. But the service was friendly & fast! They have their own parking lot but only for a certain amount of time so definitely park on the street if you plan on going to a show or hopping around. read more

The chicken tenders can come tossed in any sauce, however, they drizzle the soggy tenders with sauce which made it even soggier. The tortilla soup tasted like it came from a can, cubed chicken and all. The soup did not come out hot and the lemon pepper drizzled chicken tenders came out so spicy that my partner couldn't finish them. The servers booming voice felt like I was being coached rather than served. Lastly, the parking is awful. Overall very "meh" experience. read more

Went in for a quick dinner before a show at the Belly Up. We had reservations elsewhere but decided we didn't want to get ready earlier or dress up at all. This place was perfect and we will definitely be back.It was festive inside which I thought was great for a small place. Our waiter was super nice and patient. We had the Siracha ranch wings,sooooo good. Will be back to try the other flavors soon. I had the poke bowl, it had tons of fish and just the right amount of flavor, sauce and veggies. The husband had the Tri tip Philly sandwich, it was huge and also very good. (He was nice enough to share his fries with me, super yum and crunchy!). Of course we had to finish with a hula pie, which I said I was too full for, but agreed to take a bite. Yeah, that didn't happen as it was way too good to stop at one bite, I'd say I ate half. ‍. This place stays hoppin! And it is no wonder why, the food, the drinks, the amazing, friendly and laid back but attentive staff, the screens and the vibe are always on point. My boys love coming here and as my 9 yo says they have the world's best all day burrito! The best is a lunch on their patio (newly updated!) in the summer mid beach day, but also great for a winters night crowded in to a cozy booth. The food is great and a step or two above your regular pub or bar fare ( hello shrimp mezcal ). Came on a Saturday afternoon where they we short staffed and we were warned before ordering. Tuna melt is great! Burger was good, different seasoning but the fries were stellar! The food here is good. As in, it's really, really good. The fish and chips plate is awesome. The birria tacos are terrific. The rice which accompanies the tacos looks completely bland but it's not. It's wonderful. They pay attention to detail here. Someone is doing something really right in the kitchen. They've got interesting beers on tap and service is always friendly. Still totally kid-friendly and everyone seems to tolerate the youngsters just find. In fact, the staff was very playful with the kids who were there.
