We went to Sago last night to celebrate a girlfriend's birthday. Overall, the food had some definite standouts! The chicken and beef skewers were excellent, and we also really enjoyed the broccolini and kimchi potatoes. Everything was flavorful and those dishes were easily the highlights of the night. I would personally pass on the monkey bread dessert. It just wasn't worth it for us. I was also a little disappointed that they don't do anything to acknowledge birthdays, especially since we were there specifically celebrating one. The biggest negative, though, was the girls' restroom. It smelled strongly like urine and was honestly pretty gross. For a restaurant with this type of atmosphere, I definitely expected the restroom to be much cleaner. The food was mostly very good, but the birthday experience and restroom cleanliness could definitely use some improvement. read more

The waitresses are all scantily dressed in lingerie tops, while sauntering through the restaurant very seductively. Can't quite pinpoint if they were snooty, pretentious or looking to give a lap dance. It was the most awkward and uncomfortable atmosphere. If you're single or on a date...the food is really good. But, watch your drink, as the staff like to swipe them and your food before you are done. But at $22 a drink... no, I'm not ordering another one and you proved you would not apologize, refund or replace the ones that were taken while you watched over our shoulder for payment. officially my new go-to for elevated dining. the interior was beautiful & the music was great - they had a live DJ that was super tasteful. the intentionality of the space was immaculate. cocktails - n°1 -- my FAVORITE of the three. little to no alcohol taste (in the best way), honestly tastes a little like a capri sun. so smooth. n°2 -- spa day in a glass. super crisp and paired beautifully with all of the dishes. n°8 -- great balance of fruity and peppery. had almost a cherry taste to it, really great. our waiter hit the nail on the head with these cocktail recommendations. food - the crying tiger steak had a great smoke to it. had a bit of a game-y taste but i actually loved that about it! some bits were dry but the flavor made up for it. chicken and caviar is a must order when i return. the chicken was juicy and it was the fastest thing gone from the table for sure. the ceviche was SO fresh and bright. such a beautiful presentation as well. the kimchi marble potatoes were cooked perfectly, which i can be a stickler for. the kimchi was a mild flavor which i didn't mind. the sea bass was definitely the star of the show. so soft and the sauce on it was addictive. can't wait to return read more

this is a great girls night out spot. The ambience and music is amazing. I think the DJ goes on at 10 and then it turns into a dance floor but the menu is good. It's Asian fusion food. Did I go on the same evening as Scott T. I had a similar disappointing food experience as well :( I was beyond excited to try Sago. My date had suggested the restaurant so we both had alot of fun studying the menu before our visit. It was an early evening dinner - I think the first hour of opening. Street Parking was ok that early weekend evening. Hostess was fine and seated us quickly. Ladies, their two seaters are mostly high tables and chairs. So it's uncomfortable if you're wearing a dress or skirt IYKWIM. I don't believe there's a/c as the restaurant seems more open to invite in air. Our server was sweet. We placed our order quickly as we knew exactly what we wanted. Unfortunately, their menu didn't match what they listed online so that was disappointing. We still ordered quite a bit. We tried: Lobster Bao Buns: - pretty presentation but small portion. The batter was light but you couldn't taste the lobster. It seemed more like a glorified fish taco (not a bad thing) Ceviche: - I think this was the hamachi ceviche which came with fried taro chips. The ceviche was *really really* sour/tart. It was uncomfortable to eat as the focus was entirely citrus forward. Fried Chicken And Caviar: - 5 good size pieces of battered fried chicken topped with pearly caviar. The presentation was simple (with a grilled? lemon in the center of plate). The dark meat chicken tasted freshly fried. I wasn't able to taste much of the kaluga caviar perhaps due to the stronger lemongrass aioli ( FYI - "this type of caviar a type of caviar produced from the Kaluga sturgeon (Huso dauricus) and its hybrids, particularly with the Amur sturgeon (Acipenser schrenckii). It is known for its large, firm, and lustrous eggs, and its rich, buttery flavor with a slightly nutty taste" - per google) Pork satay: - fail. This was stated to be pork belly but it was all lean pork served dry and cold The wagyu flank wasn't on the menu so we decided to end the night with just the above (and the food had been disappointing thus far). The food came out super quick so we finished eating in less than one hour. I think someone said each table has a 90min limit so they seem to pump out food as such. The absolute worst way to end an evening is driving out to a restaurant that claims to be fully open, only to arrive and be told the kitchen is already closed. If your kitchen closes early, your listed hours need to reflect that. It is completely unacceptable to bait customers in with the promise of a meal, let them waste their time and gas to get there, and then turn them away empty-handed. Fix your operations and update your hours online. Turning hungry customers away at the door because of poor management is a guaranteed way to ensure they never come back. read more

Walking up, the place is very lively and fully of green plants, loved it!! Absolutely so cute inside! We did have reservations and we were seated at the up stairs area, which was a small area with velvet carpet, very cute and intimate. Menu: I forgot to take a photo but we had a dinner menu and not the night menu. It was one page, back and front, one page food, other was drinks. Me and my friends couldn't drink tonight so we didn't get to try the drink menu, although the drink menu did look appeasing. Food: Noodles - this came with a spicy sauce. Noodles were good, nothing special. Steak skewers: it came with 2 skewers and a greed salad. The skewers were really good and tender. Since it had two we were able to share. Duck: this was a duck leg with rice topped with an over easy egg. Everything was cooked very well and who doesn't love a good egg yolk! Kimchi Marble Potatoes: just as it sounds, very good. Has a good spice to it. Broccolini: never received it... Overall presentation of each item we actually did receive was nice, colorful, and well plated. Here is why my rating is low... Service: our waiter was not good. He did refill our water once but someone else brought our water initially after asking us if we wanted tap or sparkling, but not once did he asked us if we needed anything. When we were done eating, (you could tell by the plates) he asked if we needed boxes. But didn't bother to ask if we wanted dessert. He came back with boxes and was ready for us to pay the check... I guess he needed us out of there, lol. When he showed us the bill, I told him, well, do you guys even have dessert, he said oh well we have a tiramisu, lol I actually love tiramisu but no thanks, we decided just to find else where to get dessert (ended up driving to another spot 17 min away). Looking at the bill, we told him the broccolini is on there... you never brought it out. He said, "oh, let me take it off." Not an apology or anything. He must have really wanted us out of there so fast lol. Also, I mentioned we were upstairs, they were moving around tables and chairs getting ready for another reservation, which seemed very chaotic. It was going on for a good 20 min. No biggie, just odd because all the back and forth while we were trying to eat and there was like 4 people trying to get this done. But our waiter was moving one of the chairs and bumped into my left arm and just looked me lol it was obvious he bumped into me lol but he didn't even say sorry. I just laughed it off. Me and my friends that we were getting punked or something? With everything going on but I guess that wasn't the case. Went on a Saturday night and first thing that I noticed was the unique aesthetics! Lots of plants and a lively atmosphere for chatting. However, I would say it can a little louder if you prefer a quieter environment. We started off with their crispy broccolini, and it was one of my favorite dishes of the night! It had a rich taste with their aioli. I think their main star was their beef skewers - one of the tastiest and tender pieces of beef I've had! She gave us a quick run down of the menu, and helped us out by letting us know what was in each dish since I had a specific food allergy! The food was so so so good! Let's start out with their staff. Loved them!! Everyone was so sweet and answered all our questions. We went for an early dinner and some drinks so it wasn't too crowded. Their staff was great with recommendations and just fun to talk to. The drinks were nice and refreshing. The no.1 is really light and so good. Lowest abv but honestly if you drink those throughout the night I'm sure it'll catch up to you because they're so easy to drink. We got their hamachi ceviche which was delicious with the puffed chips. The chicken karaage with caviar was really well marinated and flavored, but I wished it was more crispy. The tiger steak skewers were kinda same thing, good flavor but maybe could've been cooked better. The nasi goreng was really good. Super bold flavors and the egg on top was perfect. We really liked this spot for small bites and good drinks. It looked like it was picking up/filling out later at night. The first time we tried to come, they didn't have space for walk ins so we made a reservation this time. That's fun for a Friday night if you want to go out to a bar/lounge type of space. My experience here was nothing short of amazing. From the time I made the reservation with Anh to the excellent customer service with our waitress Antonia. The occasion was for my wifes birthday. I had about 12 people originally on my list to come but as the time came, it jumped to almost 20. Anh had initially reserved the upper area to accomodate us and promised us it would be enough room to host our party. Sure enough it was more than enough room. The food was outstanding. The presentation was top notch and the taste was on another level. Our Waitress Antonia, was on point the whole night. She continuously checked up on us and kept our drinks flowing the entire night. I've been to many restaurants and hands down yall are my new fave! Javiers and Joey's in La Jolla got nothing on Sago. Thank you all for making my wifes special day a memorable one.
