Came down to San Diego this weekend and tried a few different spots, and Waverly was easily our favorite. Honestly, most places we went to had good food-- but the service here is what really set it apart. Our server, Miles, was awesome. Super welcoming, attentive without being over the top, and just made us feel taken care of the whole time. Even our son noticed too, which says a lot. Food-wise, everything hit. I had the Beef Rioja and The Waverly, and my lady went with the Agnolotti and the "Send Noods"(still cracking up at the name). All of it was seriously good, and the cocktails were on point and wonderfully suggested by our server. It's on of those places where the food is great, but the service is what makes you want to come back. Definitely coming here again our next visit. read more

Stopped by this place on a whim! Was a really good choice for a casual but nice dinner on a Wednesday. Very friendly staff--Zach or Zack (unsure of his spelling) was great!!! He took care of us. The orange wine was funky, just how I like it. The cocktails were not too strong, and very flavorful and refreshing. Apps especially the ceviche (not pictured) were unique, light, and so tasty. The braised beef dish was so tender. The Cesar salad was good, and the fluffy big baked croutons w/cheese inside was unique but a little too rich for my taste. It could've used a little more salad dressing too. And the chicken added to it was quite dry and not flavorful. We would come back. :) read more

First time here. Over half of the restaurant was empty when we showed up yet the hostess said she couldn't sit us. My husband showed her reservations could easily be made on open table and she was equally confused as we were. I made a comment suggesting "maybe this is why over half the restaurant is empty" suggesting that perhaps it's a technical issue that's making it difficult to coordinate between what she's seeing on her tablet vs what we're seeing on open table. She stopped fumbling and said "I'm just trying to make you happy". I was calmly asked her why she said that "because you're mad" she replied, obviously flustered with the situation. I was taken back by her sudden defensive reaction but also acknowledging that perhaps she is one of those people who can mistakenly interpret things as a personal attack so I explained myself, "I'm confused but not mad. I haven't even expressed any emotion." She sat us at a two top with uncomfortable chairs and prefaced that we had to leave this table by a certain time because it was reserved. We were uncomfortable and our server said we could switch seats. We did, and ordered, but then the manager came over and asked us to move again and gave us lots of resistance and attitude when we tried to explain how much trouble it's been trying to get a table here. She said they were fully booked but we tried to tell her that reservations were fully open on open table and instead of trying to understand our perspective she said "I don't want to argue with you" with a smug look on her face. My husband and I felt completely unwelcome and berated, despite being long time locals. We decided to leave as the whole experience ruined our appetite for the place. The ambiance at Waverly is unmatched. It's very laid back and makes me feel like I'm on vacation. We have always done walk in and usually get seated even though we do not have a reservation. Come early though (before 11AM)! For brunch I ended up ordering the grilled ham and cheese sandwich. It has a sunny side eye on top along with prosciutto and creamy Gruyère cheese sauce. Looks like an art piece! Super yummy and decently priced. Service is tentative and waitress was super friendly and enjoyed our conversation. It was very packed in the restaurant, so unfortunately service was a bit slow and it was hard to flag somebody down for water refills as the glass was very small. I tried the baja rice bowls. Had a great brunch experience here! The food here is great and the vibe is even better. Love the laidback feel and was very surprised that they had a DJ playing live. SHAKSHOUKA * 18 This was super yummy. They use San Marzano tomatoes, which are the best tomatoes for any type of tomato sauces (not to mention marinara). The poached egg on top was also cooked perfectly, and the sourdough bread was the right balance of crispy and chewy. CREME BRULEE FRENCH TOAST * 16 This was better than I expected. Not sure what I was imagining for a creme brulee french toast, but they really captured the creme brulee flavor and texture. The french toast did't come with syrup, so if you're big on that, this might not be one for you. The sweetness was perfect in my opinion, and the fruits were very fresh. BREAKFAST RICE BOWL * 18 My friend got this one, so I can't quite speak for him, but he seemed to really enjoy it. The scrambled eggs looked fluffy and the greens looked fresh. Great macro options if you're looking to not crash after brunch. DARK HORSE * 19 This was a great drink! Well mixed and the flavors were good, I'm not surprised that it's a staple on the drinks menu (they have seasonal cocktails). My friend who comes here often recommended it and I agree with him. I would definitely get this again. THE WAVERLY * 19 If you're a gin fan, this is a great option. Another staple on their cocktail menu. Gin isn't my go-to, but I decided to give this a try, seeing that it was at the top of the menu. I'm glad I did because it was good. The service was great here, even though it's quite busy on weekends. I think it would be best to make a reservation and arrive early since parking can be an issue. The decor inside is very nice and the booth seats are super comfy. This restaurant is in a strip mall. It's cute inside so I recommend you request to be seated inside or call ahead and ask not to be seated by the pizza place. I made a reservation far in advance for our daughter's birthday because that was where she wanted to go. When we arrived we were given the worst table in the restaurant, outside in the strip mall near the benches where the pizza place is. I was a hostess years ago, you seat your reservations at your better tables. The restaurant is decorated nicely there music playing and a nice vibe inside, who would want to sit in the strip mall by the pizza joint and pay the same prices (not a cheap restaurant) as those sitting inside or at the outside tables that are more a part of the restaurant? The server was nice, we had drinks then left to eat at PCG down the road, they gave us a really nice round table and we had a great evening there. read more

Popped in late this past Friday night for a drink with a friend and had the great fortunate of having Miles as our server...he gave us such great recommendations for drinks when we pressed him about the menu with no pressure on ordering and we ended up going staying much later than expected and and enjoying delicious food and a few more cocktails as well. There is a lot more creativity in the dinner dishes and flavor than experienced at breakfast. We had the cavatelli pasta, "ceviche", and caesar salad. Each was unique and delicious. 2-4 stars. This place has been on my list for a while now and on Saturday I got the opportunity to try it out. Seems like making reservations is the way to go for this spot because we were there before noon and apparently all the interior seating was already reserved. They said they could sit us out front at the patio, but they had another reservation coming at 11:45am. We assured them we'd be done by then, even though I'm a slow eater. The host and server were really friendly and kind. Their service was fast and thoughtful! I thought it was interesting how their menu was a mix of healthy and recreations of popular fast food items. Although the prices were insanely high. It's honestly so wild. They had a Daytime Menu (11am-3pm) and another menu which had their yogurt bowls, French toasts, etc on it. I went with their $19 Filet O Fish from their 11am-3pm menu. I wasn't sure if I'd like it because I've never had local rockfish before. Honestly I didn't like this fish at first, but once I lathered more of the tartar sauce on it I enjoyed it. It also contained lettuce and American cheese. The breading of the filet o fish was crispy, light, and herby. It was pretty tasty! It came with a side of fries that were on the well done side. They put the ketchup in a little jam jar that was quite difficult to dip into. The server came out with a easy to dip bowl of ketchup, which was really kind of her since I didn't mention anything about it. Overall, idk if this is worth $19 for, but it was not bad. My aunt had their $17 Ancient Grain Bowl, this contained avocado, farm egg, cremini mushrooms, Kale, tomatoes, harissa yogurt, and feta. Honestly it was a small portion, but plated beautifully. They gave two poached eggs on top. My aunt said the harissa yogurt was the star of the bowl. She also got herself a $12 glass-- which was tiny, as small as my fist. It had diff veggies, peppercorn, etc. Not for me. Even though it was a "superfood" juiced item, I don't agree with the price for the quantity given. The Waverly is a cute spot but their prices are absurd. They even had a menu for dogs and a simple pb, banana, and yogurt pupsicle was $9! The prices were between $9-15, for a DOG. It may be a spot that others enjoy spending their money at, but it's not for me. read more

We had dinner at Waverly with friends last night. This restaurant has an open and contemporary design. We had reservations and I'm glad we did. It was a hopping and busy place for a Wednesday. I was pleasantly surprised that they have live music on Wednesday nights. It was a nice touch but loud and made it difficult for our party of 4 to communicate with each other. The waverly has a positive energy and the staff is well trained and were attentive and friendly, even though we paced our dinner out to around 2.5-3 hours catching up with our friends. Most busy restaurants would say something. I was pleased the staff continued to pour our wine and water glasses, as graciously as when we started our evening. Cocktails: I had the Kona Old Fashioned (5/5) and my buddy had a green cocktail that he enjoyed, but I can't remember the name. The Waverly has some very inventive and unique cocktails. Food: we started with sharing the Caesar salad (7/5) and the blistered shishito peppers (5/5). Both were very good. The Caesar salad was huge and I was glad all 4 were sharing. It had these unique and delicious custom croutons that are a 1.5 inch toasted cube of French bread filled with a garlicky cream. Such a great spin to a normal Caesar. My wife had the braised beef rioja (5/5) and I had the grilled pork chop with an apple cider glaze (3.5/5). The pork chop had more sweetness than I prefer. My wife loved this very savory braised beef dish served over very smooth mashed potatoes. I regret not choosing the beef rioja. Overall we had a good experience at Waverly, albeit loud with the live music. I can see why this is our Cardiff friends go to restaurant. read more

Open interior, dimly lit, with plenty of tables inside and out. Service with a friendly smile is always a plus! Their evening menu had quite a few selections, so we ordered several things to share. Easy to come here for brunch in the am. Never had to wait to be seated. Lovely seating indoors or out on the patio. I really do love the umbrellas on the patio for a warm day. Our service was great as well. We never had to cue anyone for help and our water glasses were always full. I had the delicious iced Rosemary matcha. The Rosemary just left a refreshing taste but it was not strong. The matcha however was perfectly slightly sweet. My husband ordered the farm egg benedict and I had the Turkish poached eggs. I absolutely loved the Turkish poached eggs. The Aleppo was my favorite part. The meal itself was filling and everything tasted fresh, especially the cucumbers.
