I do not live close to Fred's at all but every time I'm in the area I do my best to pull up and get one. From the front to the back the staff will talk to you, recommend stuff to try, and will even remix what's available if what you want isn't available. This place has never been very clean to start with and it has gone down hill since our last visits. They must be going for that authentic dirty, grimy, filthy Philly feeling. This place needs some cleanliness first and some serious updating second. Split a cheese steak, and in spite of it looking like dog food it was pretty good. It would have been better if it were not chopped up so much. And, would have enjoyed it more if the bun wasn't soggy. Lastly, price. $11.45 for a soggy cheesesteak is not good value. If you order a cheesesteak and want to substitute Whiz it's an extra $1.50. Hole in the wall but not hole in the wall pricing. The food is off the chain - this rating is for health concerns. I frequent the Plano location. On my last few visits, young kids (18-23) were working the grill. Nobody was cooking, preparing or handling any food with gloves on. They were all handling the hoagies, the grill, etc without hand protection of any kind. No hair nets either, and the main grill guys had long hair. Hair nets is one thing, I can let that slide, but no plastic gloves is straight up gross. He was even picking pieces up with his fingers that fell off the cheesesteak onto the grill, and putting it back on the sandwhich. 100% health code violation, and you'd expect a little more especially these days. On top of that the whole place smelled like raw sewage, so I am assuming they've had plumbing issues or something? read more

I wish I had pictures of my cheesesteaks from here, but a "naked" review will have to do! I don't live in Plano, but when I visit I HAVE to eat here at least once. I typically stay with the normal cheesesteak with extra meat and cheese ... however, my husband loves the cheese wiz and I do tend to agree that I think it adds more flavor! The bread is excellent ... I would definitely recommend getting extra meat on any sandwich you get because sometimes the bread, as good as it is, can be overwhelming without enough meat. I mentioned it was my first time and she literally walked me through everything to customize my order just like I wanted it. She was very knowledgeable of the entire menu and offered recommendations based on my likings. I got a giant cheesesteak with extra meat, cheese (she explained my options of cheeze whiz and American chz), mushrooms and onions. Generous portion of Cajun fries with a few cups of ranch all for under $20. It was literally two meals. On my way out, I noticed the house sauce on the tables and asked for a few cups to go. Today was a very disappointing visit to Fred's. We ordered 2 sandwiches with extra meat and its not what we got! I even showed it to the hostess and she said yes it looks a bit sparse. We even compared it to the table next to us. Seems like the kitchen is overwhelmed! What is more disappointing is when I asked the kitchen is this double meat they said yes! Also no one tried to rectify it by either giving us more meat what we paid for or refunding the added amount charged! Very disappointing indeed. Seems like when Fred isn't there its a miss!! Food was made fresh and quickly. There was an appropriate amount of meet in my #8 and the bun was super yummy. Staff was friendly and even though my order was yo ho, they brought it out to me. Overall, very disappointing. We saw some positive reviews and we were in the neighborhood, so we gave it a shot. I was a little concerned when we first walked in because there were 3 other groups of people and no one had any food in front of them. I think they got busy all at once and we came in at the tail end of it (there were only 2 people working). But, they got the food out in a timely manner and no one was upset about the wait. There are several TVs on at once and a movie was playing with the sound up while we waited. We ordered and then waited. The people who ordered in front of us started to get their food. The girl would put the food on the pick up window and shout out a number. The problem was that no one got a number with their order, so every time the girl shouted out a number, everyone looked around as if to say "Is that our order?". We didn't even get a receipt to see if an order number was on that. It was very confusing. Everyone just got up to get their order based on their place in line for ordering. We got our order and were not impressed. I got a Philly Cheese steak and fries. My wife got the "sad salad". They should probably not call it that because "sad" is the best way to describe it. She had the "sad salad" with chicken and it was pretty bad. The grilled chicken was over cooked and chewy. She kept spitting out the chicken in her napkin. My cheese steak was pretty lame. There was not much meat on the sandwich, and the meat was very over cooked. There was very little cheese or onions. I kept expecting more when I took a bite. I eventually put ketchup on every bite so I could finish it. And then there are the fries........ I'll get straight to the point... I had high expectations for Fred's philly cheese. This was my wife and I first philly cheese steak ever and I must say we were a little disappointed. The food was just ok. I expected a nice fat, juicy, greezy, cheesy, BURST with flavor cheese steak but instead it wasn't very flavorful or cheesy. The restaurant has many options so maybe it was just the sandwich I ordered but the one I ordered was suppose to be one of their best. On the bright side the staff was funny, kind, and really down to earth. The restaurant was really chill and cozy. A great place to sit back with friends and family and shoot the breeze before a great night out. As mentioned before, there are TONS of menu options. I couldn't decide what to have for lunch, so I decided to give Fred's another shot. Not that the food was bad last time, but the timing of my visit sure was off. I showed up at 11:15 and boy, oh boy is there a difference. There was only one customer eating and 2 others waiting for food. A quick lunch was definitely a possibility. I ordered a #2 combo, 6" cheesesteak with onions, fries and a small (small) fountain drink to go. The total was $7.31 after tax. I can so handle that. I was in an out (heheh) in about 7 minutes, which is so much better than the 25 minutes it took on my last visit. Consider that a lesson learned. Do not show up at Fred's during the height of the lunch rush and expect to eat in under an hour. Come early or late or call your order in. Fred's really does serve up a bad ass cheesesteak. Hot and gooey with crunchy/chewy bread. The fries were really good and my favorite part is that they salt *and* pepper them. I love peppered fries. The only drawback to this visit was the small drink (I think I'm just spoiled by the over-sized fast food world), Pepsi products (blech) and lack of to-go sauces (ketchup for the fries and the white sauce (?) for the sandwich) and napkins. I've heard only good things about this place!!!! Let's check it out!!! Well I must say I will not be returning here. I am so disappointed. First off, let me say nice things. The resturant is a small hole in the wall, which I love places like that!! Its clean and super organized. The guy working at the cashier was really helpful and friendly, now...we order this food, and it actually smells amazing. Of course we are ordering togo. We get in the car and start eating the fries, and the fries taste like straight oil and grease seasoned with black pepper. It was so gross. Well thats number one! Number 2 we get home and open up the first philly, which by the way was wrapped nice and neat, and its just like bread. Hard bread and you could see NO meat No onions No nothing. Which I cut the philly into halfs there was barely any meat in there. And the meat looked like hard taco beef that was like thrown in some oil on the stove. All 3 sandwhiches looked like that. And tasted aweful . By the time we had gotten home, started eating, it was way to much to drive back up there. I dont know if we came on a wrong day with the wrong person cooking, but Im all about food be consitant cooked the same way each and everytime you go to a resturant no matter whos the cook. First impressions count a lot, and I was tempted to leave after the rudeness we were "greeted" with. The female behind the counter should not be in a customer service role. After ordering, we sat down and waited, hoping it would be as good as we saw on tv last week. When the sandwiches were finished, we were again let down. Stingy with the meat would be an understatement. But, we ordered it, so we figured we would eat it. One bite in and my wife said; "I'm done". I looked over and watched her pull a rather long hair out of her sandwich. I said something to the guy in the back about it, and he just looked at me and lifted his hat while saying; "I don't have any hair, and neither does he", he then went back to texting. Well, the female behind the register does in fact have hair, and she was in and out of the kitchen quite a bit with no hat or hair net on. She too acted like it was no big deal. The décor is very "hole in the wall" and if you read the other reviews, they are pretty spot on. It's just clean enough that you still feel safe eating there. The food took a bit to get to me, but judging from the smiles on the faces I was good on waiting. My sandwich gets there and I gotta say, "that's a mighty tasty sammich". Called ahead to make sure they were open on Labor Day. They were, but closing early at 3pm. Each ordered 6 inch #6 - pepper steak, to go. I put some cash in the tip jar on the counter, and the young cashier didn't say thanks or acknowledge it at all. Not cool. For some reason I thought our phillys would be a soggy mess by the time we got back home, but pleased they were not. Unwrapped them and not impressed. Saw meat and a few banana peppers. Didn't see the onions, and maybe there was some cheese at the very bottom. Sandwich was a little bland, added Fred's sauce to add some flavor. Next time will add salt & pepper as suggested by previous reviews. Fries were just okay. If you plan on eating there, seating is tight. I usually like small businesses like this.
