"He came from nothing he tried 'em all Ya' gotta live low before you see them fall They said he was broke and never coming back But Frankie's gonna be alright" (Dropkick Murphys) The origin story of Frankie's is fantastic. During the Great Depression, two brothers pooled family money, bought an empty lot in Waterbury, convinced a lumber yard to give them lumber on credit, built a restaurant, then persuaded a meat purveyor and local bakery to create extra-long hot dogs and rolls. Business boomed and they opened a second location in 1941. Today, they have six locations across Connecticut. We visited their Plainville location yesterday and had a very enjoyable lunch. Our first order of business was deciding what we'd order, because their menu is quite deep. The menu is broken down into groupings, things like Specialties (chicken, chili, etc.), Hot Dogs, Sandwiches (Burgers, BLT, Grilled Cheese), Seafood (fried fish, shrimp, clams, scallops, grilled fish and a lobster roll), Salads, Sides (fries, rings, fried veggies, and more), and six kids meals. Fried food dominates, and I laughed when I saw a sign at the front of the store that proclaimed in no uncertain terms "It Ain't Food If It Ain't Fried". My wife ordered a regular hot dog, I ordered a scallop roll, and we split an order of Waffle Fries. We were pleasantly surprised that our cashier voluntarily gave us a 10% Senior Citizen discount, (a perk of my graying hair I suppose). A fountain drink and tax brought our discounted cost to a super reasonable $26.17. Frankies has a condiment bar where you can add as much sauerkraut, ketchup, chopped onions, and three kinds of relish as your little heart desires. I loved the scallop roll- a big mound of breaded and fried bay scallops piled on a toasted and buttered hot dog roll. I asked for cocktail sauce with it and a small, prepackaged container was on my tray when our number was called. The scallop roll was excellent. So were the waffle fries, a pretty big portion of golden-brown crunchy fries -easily enough to share. I doctored mine up with some of the condiment bar ketchup and onions and loved it. I didn't mooch any of the hot dog, but my wife gave it a glowing report. What a cool place. If you love old school comfort food served without a hint of pretension, Frankies is for you.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch in-between errands. It was not busy and we were able to order as soon as we walked in. We ordered two regular (Original) dogs and one chili. We also ordered two orders of their steak fries. The hot dogs are long and thin. They stick out from the buns. I guess that is supposed to be their signature look. They did taste good. I added yellow mustard and onions to my plain dog and onions to my chili dog. The chili on the dog, while not bad tasting, was reminiscent of something out of a can. The steak fries were good. I had mine with some ketchup on them. My wife had her fries plain also. Once we got home we both ended up drinking a lot of water. Apparently, the dogs had a lot of salt in them. We didn't detect it while we were eating them, it was well hidden. Bottom line - there are better hot dogs out there.

Working in the area and needed somewhere nearby to grab lunch and this restaurant came up on my Google search. The menu was interesting and had options that seems delicious and affordable. Not much parking is available in the designated parking lot but there is street parking. Inside is wonderfully decorated with pictures and quotes on the wall and a very quiet and cozy atmosphere. Thought it would be busier for lunch but there were no lines and the cashier was ready to take our order. My coworkers and I ordered the fried shrimp plate, the fried clams, Cesar salad, and some fish and chips. To our surprise for such a small restaurant the food was extremely good. Even though my fried shrimp was a little over-fried and crispy, my roll was a little over toasted it was still good. The fries were extra hot like they just came out of the oil. If you are ever in the area and need somewhere affordable with less traffic this is the place for you.

Frankie's is one of those places that you go to for a dog and fried foods at decent prices. You don't go here for fancy or unique bites. You get basic food made well for not so much. If given the option of a fast food chain or Frankie's, I would do Frankie's. It's not special food, but good food done cheap. Just like this review. It's short n sweet.

Ok I tried frankies again Absolutely disgusting. Sweaty hands on the food. No masks on staff. Dirty counters. Filth everywhere. Place should be shut down

I've always come to Frankies when I'm craving a chilli dog ! however when I ordered the onion rings they were very soggy and not crispy. I was very displeased given food costs so much now a days ! I will not be ordering these again.

Having been a fan of Frankie's growing up in Bristol I was a little sad to see it move to Southington. The location a little hard to get to and hard to park at is an upgrade to the pot holes and RT 6 of Bristol. They have a larger restaurant forgoing the small order window for a open counter that can sometimes make it hard to have conversations or order since you can hear everything in their raised space. There is much more ample seating with a separate section for larger crowds. I also spotted an outdoor area that will open up in the summer time with a take out window. No more drive thru. I've always been a fan of their clam strip with fries Cole slaw and garlic bread. Didn't get the whole thing but got an order of clam strips. I'll have to see how the full order is but the strips sadly arent the same as before. Being very flaky you arent getting a nice balance of the fried and the clam. Small thing but having it for years makes me feel some kind of way. You'll always have a fan in me. Just don't forget your roots coming into the modern world with iPads and everything, the feel of a local business knowing their patrons have always pulled me back

The textured walls are gorgeous and give the space a style it was definitely missing before. As usual, the happy hour menu never disappoints. The Pomjito is a personal favorite.. refreshing, light, and not too sweet. We also got the oysters and mussels, both solid. The mussel sauce was unique compared to a typical tomato base, which we really appreciated. For my entrée, though, I was disappointed to see that the tuna salad I always order had completely changed. It used to be an arugula salad with Asian flavors and the tuna served on top. Now it It's a Niçoise salad, and the tuna is awkwardly placed on the side. Nothing about the tuna tasted like it did before. I'm usually a sucker for ahi tuna, but this was honestly one of the most disappointing ahi dishes I've ever had. It felt totally incohesive with the salad next to it. I really wish they didn't change the menu so frequently. Once I finally find an entrée I genuinely look forward to, it disappears. That said, we'll still be back for the great happy hour food and solid drinks. Now it's just a matter of finding a menu item I like... and hoping they keep it.

I've known about this place for a while, and a friend reminded me that they recently changed locations. We were seated in the bar area at a high table and were given two menus: a happy hour menu that lasted until 6 PM and their regular menu. We figured we'd order a few things off of their happy hour menu while it was still going on, then move on to the regular menu after 6 PM, since we knew we'd be there for at least a couple of hours. We ordered a shrimp appetizer, gnocchi, fries, wine, and a white Cosmo to start. My absolute favorite was the grilled shrimp appetizer, even though the other two were very good as well. My friend's favorite was the gnocchi. From the regular menu, I ordered the ham and cheese croquettes and she ordered the regular cheese croquettes since she is vegetarian. We loved those as well. These four tapas were enough to serve as our dinner and we didn't have to order anything else. The service was fantastic and I thought that everything was priced very well. I liked that there was a parking lot right next-door. A friend met us. Later on for a final drink and mentioned that he liked this new location better than the old location. I would definitely return and try different tapas. Their entrées also looked very good. I really like this location because you can walk around and do other things after dinner in the area.

The Brussels sprout salad was top-notch--packed with flavor and one of my favorite dishes of the night. The pasta was also excellent, with a perfectly balanced creamy sauce that wasn't too heavy. I especially liked how they presented all the dessert options, making it fun to choose. We ended up ordering the pistachio cake, but unfortunately, it wasn't my favorite. It tasted much saltier than expected rather than sweet. I'm not sure if it was due to the cream cheese or the pistachios themselves, but the flavor felt a bit off for a dessert. Overall, it was a great dining experience.

Anthony Jack's ... it's like home, on steroids! It feels like family in here. And that's an awesome vibe. This place isn't for blue hairs only. Being I was here today for lunch, it was a younger crowd, along with children of the younger crowd. This was really nice to see Meeting great friends from Southington here for lunch, even though there are other choices, Anthony Jack's is a solid local favorite. Not only for me, but for the many. Today I was in the mood for a burger, and I ordered the $13 burger which arrived cooked medium, along with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. This was all served on a wonderful fluffy soft fresh roll. Chef chose a great roll to serve this burger on. The hamburger patty was not the frozen type cheap stuff; this was fresh ground beef, and hand formed. A quarter pound it seemed, and grilled with a nice charcoal flavor to it. It was very juicy and hit the spot. Also included with crispy well seasoned french fries and a little salad with house dressing. For $13 this was an excellent value. Our server, Brianna, was very very cheerful knowledgeable of the menu, and of course, very attentive to our needs. To say our service was perfect would be an understatement. I wish other food establishments had servers like Brianna. She's really that good. Restrooms, of course were clean, as usual. Parking was a breeze out front, but there are also many parking spaces at the rear of the restaurant and utilize the restaurant's back entrance. It was nice to come back home. And it was just as nice to return to Anthony Jack's. Anthony Jack's .. until I see you again, you left me with a smile and full. It is way more spacious than their previous location and nicely decorated. We sat in a nice Modular Half Moon Restaurant Sofa in the back. Felt like I was looking down upon the rest of the guests having dinner. Nice table just felt a bit like we were on display however I still enjoyed as I love the style of these tables. Our waiter I think was new and definitely did not know wine. We asked for a bottle of the Merlot, which he pronounced back to us "Mer-LOT." I couldn't help but chuckle a bit when he left the table. Someone else came and opened the wine for us and when our main server came to check on us, he grazed the side of my glass and freaked, telling us the glasses are $500 each and if he breaks one, it comes out of his paycheck. Ummm what? This stuff we probably should not know! Again, I think he was new, probably not having much experience as a waiter. He definitely needs training on how to pronounce wine! Moving on to the cheese, they used to give you a cheese board with a few different cheeses. It's a bit different now. They give you whipped butter, a few pieces of cheese (last night was Cheddar), roasted red peppers, and whipped goat cheese with a touch of honey on top and some bread. Not sure if this changes/rotates at their new location. We chose not to do the raw bar or appetizer courses (fyi those are extra). For my salad, I chose the Signature Salad (forgot to take a picture of this course). This is where things went downhill for me. I asked for no apples. He said no problem. He did not tell us they ran out of the dried cranberries and caramelized nuts which to me make the whole salad. I used to love this salad at the old location. So, when telling us the specials he did say he "thinks" they had one salmon entree left, but had to check. Restaurants run out of things, and I get it, but take that salad off the menu if you're out of 2 ingredients and the customer asks for no apples. All that we got on our salads was lettuce, gorgonzola and fried potato skins. I feel like I had French fries on top of lettuce. It was awful. Also, I'm the only one that asked for no apples and my boyfriend got the same salad I got with only potato skins and lettuce and gorgonzola so clearly they were running out of things. We then saw other customers getting the same salad lacking main ingredients. For my entree, I got the Heavenly, which was supposed to have a lobster sauce. I couldn't put my finger on what the flavor of the sauce was. It was strange. It wasn't bad, it just didn't really go with the lobster. It had a brown tint to it. The manager came over after we ate and asked us how things were, and I told him about the salad and asked what the flavor in the sauce was. He told us a crab style sauce which made sense. Boyfriend had the filet. He said it wasn't Ruth's Chris good, but it was good. Mashed potatoes were very bland. Presentation was pretty bad. Dessert they get from a third party. I had the flourless chocolate cake which was the best part of the meal. Desserts are where they have improved with the new location. They used to give you petit fours style desserts, and now they give you full size desserts. It was delicious. I really want to like this place more because I like the concept of what they do. I guess on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays the chef creates whatever he'd like for guests for $25 a head. Mystery meals. The manager said that's where the name "Adventures in Eating" comes from. Again, we had come here previously, and I had a problem the last time with the Branzino where the waitress didn't tell me it came as the whole fish. Servers are friendly here, they just aren't top notch. Food is ok.
