Living in SF, my favorite food was a Belly Bao from "General Bao's" food truck - yes - my favorite food came from a food truck, a glorious and magical food truck. This place just reminded me of that simple deliciousness and I'm grateful for not only the assist with the kitchen, but for the reminder - a few ingredients can be really amazing - if done right. I should have just listened to my friend and retrun it but was being nice and I didn't even touch it at all. That was the down fall. Had an unexpected visit to Fooki today and here are my thoughts. At the door... Written instructions are a little confusing. A QR code for take out and a sign that says check in at the window (which only has an ipad that doesn't do anything except probably pay a bill) No one at the window. After waiting a little while at the window, I proceeded into the restaurant. Greeted by an associate from the back asking if I was dining in. Yes I am. Walked across a floor that seemed forgotten and unfinished then sat at the table I was directed to. The menu is on line, accessible via a QR code. OK I'm old and it took me a while to look through the menu and had several questions, stopping the waitress several times. I was offered to order from a menu but, I didn't want to be a pain in the butt. haha Finally ordered the Cow Wow Now Noodle Soup and added Won Ton and a Sweetheart Egg. The broth was amazing and the won ton was fat and delicious. The Sweetheart Egg was a little too sweet for me. The Beef Rib was very tender and good (as long as you ate it with the broth). Also, ordered the Grandpa Rolling Beef. It was just ok. I found it weird that the outside was fried but, the beef inside was cold. Also, could have used more hoisin sauce. It was dry. I usually eat my food the way the chef intended (no added condiments) but, should have ordered more hoisin. Anywhoo, It is what it is. My total was a little shocking to me as well, Just me and the 2 items I ordered came out to $59 and change. You also pay your bill via the QR. Which was ok but found it weird that they would default the tip to 18%. For service which included someone just dropping my food off to the table. Oh, and answering some questions. I brought my friend to Fooki's . This was her first time there. We ordered the Curry Boom Boom Chicken. It comes in bite size pieces . When Fooki first opened they would give gigantic size pieces. The taste is still the same. So Ono. I feel it's better than before. We also ordered the Li Hing Mui Sweet potato fries with their special sauce. Veggie Scallion noodles mixed with scallions oil, house noodles sauce, topped with stir fried shimenji mushrooms, deep fried tofu, fried taro chips, cucumber, red onion, cilantro, parsley and green onion. It was my first time dining there and it won't be my last. I plan to return! It was three of us and we decided to order just appetizers. We ordered 8!!! Everything we had from the appetizers side were all so delicious! We even had leftovers as we were so full. Like you can't go wrong! I think I saw Fooki open up during the pandemic as I was going in for an oil change a few years ago. But only now have I had a chance to try it out and I'm a fan. I love the interior, I enjoyed everything my cousin ordered for us. And because we had a late lunch, we were happy to have just missed the lunch rush. And the service was great. The beef noodle soup for $25 is a little steep but the soup is flavorful and not watery with large chunks of meat. The pot stickers are crispy on the outside with a very meaty center. The ja Jiang mien was loaded with fresh vegetables and sauce making with a delectable combination. My favorite was the appetizer loaded with vegetables. The Vietnamese coffee and Jasmine milk tea made for a perfect dish pairing. The only different thing about this restaurant is the entrance check in at the window outside. I have been hearing mixed reviews about Fooki and I finally was able to try this place out. This is located in pretty much in the same area as Kuru Kuru Sushi and Curry House. You check in at the take-out window outside before you can enter into the restaurant. Cow wow noodle soup: There are some complaints I have regarding this bowl. First, the egg I've seen on other Yelp photos, was soft boiled. What I got was hard boiled. Second, the beef rib on the bone per other Yelp reviewers, was tender and fall-off-the bone soft. What I got was pretty tough and did not fall off the bone. The flavor was good and the amount of fat was good, but I had to leave some of the meat on the bone because they were hard to pull off. Third, the noodle portion was very little. A few bites and they were gone. It wasn't very filling. Lastly, I've seen that the bowl was supposed to include the Chinese sour cabbages. My bowl did not include it. I am not sure if it is included only for the braised bowl. The beef shank slices were pretty plain and dry. The tendons were good. Very soft and melt in your mouth. Overall, the flavor was good. Very fragrant and very tasty. The broth was delicious. Boom boom chicken: I love Taiwanese-style popcorn chicken. My go-to used to be Seasons Ice and Eatery but lately their popcorn chicken has been under seasoned and overcooked where the meat was so dried out. Fooki's boom boom chicken was excellent. The chicken was well seasoned, spiced, crispy, and juicy. The boom boom sauce was tasty. It goes so well with the chicken. Love the addition of the sauce on the side. However, I wished there were more of the fried basils. Also as an ala carte dish, it was pretty pricey. Overall, it is a pretty good noodle place. Service was quick and the foods were pretty good. Visited on a Tuesday night at 6:30pm with my mum and was quite disappointed with the service, but was impressed with the food. The last two times I visited, we did takeout because of COVID, so it was our first time dining in. We were promptly seated for our reservation and there were servers that bussed the table next to us and took orders from all the tables around us but we ended up waiting 18 minutes before anyone came to take our order. And once the food did come, we were promptly given the check halfway through the meal which, under normal circumstances I get, because you have to turn tables over quickly, but there were quite a few empty tables in the restaurant and no one waiting outside. The food however came out very quickly and was very great. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The Jajang Noodles were very chewy and thin with lots of flavor coming from the sauce. The black bean sauce was quite sparse and a bit sweeter than we're used to, but it was still delicious. The Boom Boom Chicken is my absolute favorite dish from Fooki and it was excellent as always. The outside was very crispy and the inside of some parts were juicy while other parts were a bit on the dry side. The flavors were super bold and spiced well, and the plate came with a generous serving of rice, veggies and tofu. The Mala Wontons were on the tangy side which I wasn't expecting, and they were surprisingly really spicy. I loved the flavor but wished there was more of a szechuan kick to it. My mum ordered the salted honey lemonade which was also really really impressive. I usually don't like lemonades but theirs was the perfect balance of sweet, salty and tart. I ordered the Seafood Laksa, which was very flavorful and if you end up saving the leftover curry coconut creamy broth, would be ideal for layering on top of any appetizer. The Shrimp Paste Noodle Soup could've been improved upon as the broth wasn't too memorable, however the hand made shrimp paste was fairly unique. Also I noticed that they offer a good amount of food. I almost couldn't finish it as I was getting full 80% into my meal! I went an hour ish before closing so it wasn't too busy. However, to me, the meat and ramen did not have as much flavor as I expected from the reviews: Grandpa Rolling beef - 3.5 stars - for $12, it was only one roll cut into 5 pieces, but it was pretty tasty. Cowwow Original Noodle Soup - 3.5 stars - for $24 there was a lot of meat, but it was chewy, and the soup was a bit bland. The noodles also had no taste. I added an egg for $2.50 more. Porkchop Laksa - 5 stars - for $21, this dish was worth the price. Although I couldn't fully eat it, I had a piece of pork and some noodles and soup from my son, and it was flavorful. The pork had a lot of fat, but it was crispy and in all, a savory dish. Lychee yuzu tea - 3.5 stars - this is a new item to their menu. It's actually a 4 star for the tea alone that had a sweet with a little sour yuzu taste, but the boba I ordered in addition to the tea was a little hard. Service - 3 stars - they are a bit high tech, we scan the QR code to look at the menu, and order from our phone. The waitress was attentive, friendly, was around if we have any questions about the items listed on the menu, and waters were filled, however, it was a total turn off when they were disinfecting the tables and floor with pinesol with no ventilation in the restaurant right after a customer left their table. The pinesol smell was so strong, that the smell overpowered the smell and taste of the food. There is a 3% surcharge if you pay by credit or debit card, so bring cash if you don't want to pay extra. Lots of Parking since it is at Pearl Kai, across Kam Hwy from Pearlridge. Personally I felt the dumplings are a little greasy, but hey I also ate the pork belly wrap which we call guabao in Taiwan. I have no idea why they call the beef roll "grandpas"? But it was tasty. Holy cow! The wow cow lived up to the hype, surprising even for a take out order. Food held up for my 10-15min drive home. I was very impressed with my first experience here. Spontaneously was craving noodle after work and decided to do a quick pick up. So glad I did. This here is a really hearty meal. I mean very hearty, with a very generous meat portion. It gave me very oxtail soup vibes but with pizzazz. The toppings all complimented each other. I'm not an expert food critic but mmm the food was good. Been a year too long going back... it's under new management. Not completely different menu but different nonetheless. They don't have the tiramisu cold brew drink anymore... very sad about that. So I asked if it's renamed something different but nope. Really is gone. Was told the cheese cold brew is on the salty side so just opted into trying their iced Vietnamese coffee, very bold, not similar to the tiramisu cold brew. Tried out the Lou Rou Fan which has lots of sauce. Walking up to pay and turns out they have a alcohol drink menu... wish we were made aware of this.
