My family was in the area to shop over at Crafts Way and I found Fooki on Yelp as a nearby food option. It had something for everyone in our group of seven: 2 vegetarians, 1 vegan and 4 meat eaters. The restaurant had a divy vibe, cozy and welcoming. The service was very friendly and the server was incredibly knowledgable about their menu and how what made some of their dishes stand out from what's expected. The Li Hing Mui Sweet Potato Fries are a must! They totally reminded me of my childhood and the kind of fries I'd get at the amusement park back in Taiwan. Here's everything we ordered. We have been here several times before and this time we brought the whole gang. Although it was a Friday night, we came earlier than normal and were able to be seated immediately. I've always wanted to try this place because I love Taiwanese food. But maybe because I had such high expectations, I was pretty disappointed with everything. First, the price was pretty high compared to the amount of food they served and the flavor of their menu. The pork rice bowl had way too much rice compared to the pork, and I think I only had half of the rice to eat with the pork on top. All the foods we ordered wasn't very flavorful either and they charged 3% for credit cards. As any good manager would, they took his review and made improvements. For shareable starters, we ordered three appetizers. Their Boom Boom Chicken is excellent! Generous portion, great crunch on the outside, tender and tasty on the inside, and seasoned with that signature Taiwanese flavor. We finished every delicious morsel. Then we shared the Mala Wonton. If you like heat, this has a chili kick to it. Generous portion of dumplings topped with a spicy chili sauce, green onions, and sesame seeds. I normally don't eat spicy but glad to try this one. The most favorite dish at the table, enjoyed by everyone, was their fried fish filet. Again, another generous portion of something shareable. But after you tasted this fish, you might not want to share. Order this up for yourself! A few days after our delicious dining experience, our dinner guest said, "I feel like ordering a bunch of that fried fish from Fooki. That taste was incredible!" He also had the ox rib soup which had meaty portions of tender beef ribs. The broth was excellent and they served this with a side of rice and grated ginger dipping sauce. I had the mushroom noodle soup. When I requested this, our server made sure to tell me that it was beef broth in case I was a strict vegan. Oh this was a nice warm bowl of yummy comfort. They were delicious. For entrees we tried the Classic Wonton bowl, the Classic Beef bowl, the Monster Pork Chops, the 3 Cup Chicken, and Fooki Pork Belly bowl. I picked up the Minced Pork Noodles for lunch during the week. The texture of the noodles were great for getting this as take out, but the overall dish was a little bland for my liking. Fooki is a cute little Taiwanese restaurant located in Aiea. I had actually never heard of this restaurant, but a good friend of mine recommended it so we made reservations for dinner. This place was in my Yelp Bookmarks for a long time but never got a chance to try it out. When friends chose this place for our quarterly get together, I was all for it! Before our luncheon, I did my research on Yelp to see what fellow yelpers recommended. I had a long list and discussed it with everyone. We decided to share family style so we all could taste a little of each. Here's what we ordered: 1. Grandpa Rolling Beef $15: Its braised shanks, cucumber and cabbage rolled in a scallion pancake, topped with sake hoisin sauce and sesame seeds. We thought it was good but not something we would order again. 2. Boom Boom Chicken A la carte $16: It's fried chicken with basil and comes with a special sauce. I read about how the sauce was awesome so maybe my expectations were high. This was good but it's another dish we would pass. 3. Garlic Stir Fry Veggies $15: When my friends wanted to order this, I thought "Yikes, cooked vegetables with no meat?!". This dish included stir fry Shanghai bok choy, cabbage, cucumber, shimeji mushroom, fried tofu and garlic. OMG! This was sooooooo yummy! We all raved about how tasty it was and we would DEFINITELY order this again! I'm glad they ordered it! 4. Fooki Bao $8 each: This is braised thick cut pork belly, pickled mustard, crushed sweet peanuts, cilantro, sesame seed in a steamed bun. I first thought it was pricey...$8 for 1 thinking the bun would be the size of the ones you get when you order duck at a Chinese restaurant...this one looked like double the size and the pork belly piece was big, thick and very tasty! They have this item priced as $8 for 1 OR 3 for $24 but it still comes out to $8 each so you don't get a cheaper price for buying more. A friend and I ordered this as a takeout for our husband so they could try it. Asked our server, Todd if we warmed it up in the microwave, would the bun still be soft...he didn't think so. We took our chances (that's how much we liked it), warmed it up and the bun was still soft and the pork was oh-so-good...yay! 5. Monster Pork Chops A la carte $16: Another friend ordered this as a takeout for her husband. He thought it was good but would've been better if it was eaten there because it wasn't crispy. Beef scallion noodles: The noodle texture was perfect, not over or undercooked. Funny but we both ordered the won ton noodle soup. I ate the braised that was supposed to be spicy and my friend had the regular. There wasn't really any spice to mine. Had the COW WOW Noodle Soup (braised) and a Thai tea with boba. Husband got the Boom Boom chicken and Lychee Taiwan beer. We also got the Mala Wonton to share. The cow wow noodle soup was ok. The broth was nice and clean and the meat was flavorful, especially the meat on the bone. The collagen bits weren't too chewy and I was happy to eat them all (youthful skin!!) Don't know what took us so long to come here, I rave about Egghead Cafes Porky Baos & always say the wait and drive is worth going to. I knew that they were sister companies but never tried Fooki until we went on a whim with family -- Gone are the days I have to order an hour or two ahead for pork baos. Their take out is 90% faster than Egghead Cafe's. Plus this is location is more local to me which is a huge plus. The service is great, I went four times in a course of two weeks. This is the closest beef noodle soup I've gotten compared to the ones I've had in Taiwan. The spicy braised one barely has a kick but the flavor profile is very well balanced, so I'd recommend choosing this option. For once I wished their portion size was smaller so that I can try everything on the menu. One thing I wish I tried was something on their dessert menu. After years of driving past Fooki, we finally decided to give them a try. From the moment we walked in, the experience was great. The staff was warm and accommodating, making us feel right at home. The interior had a trendy yet cozy vibe, perfect for a casual hangout with drinks or a full on feast. The menu was packed with enticing options, many of which were right up my alley. If only my stomach had unlimited capacity! Unfortunately, I had to make some tough choices, but every dish we tried was a hit. What We Ordered: A-MA Rolling Veggies - Absolutely loved this! As a veggie lover, this dish checked all the boxes: hearty, well-balanced, and packed with flavor. The plump, perfectly cooked shimeji mushrooms added a satisfying umami depth, while the cucumbers provided a refreshing crunch, all wrapped in a soft yet crispy scallion pancake. You'd almost forget it was vegetarian! Boom Boom Chicken - A standout dish. The chicken was crispy and perfectly seasoned, with fried basil adding a fragrant crunch. Paired with their spicy mayo dipping sauce, each bite was an explosion of flavor. I'd say this is a must try. Cow Wow Beef Noodle (Original) - This dish had a bold yet soothing broth, with flavors reminiscent of pho, but with its own unique twist. The deep, rich broth had subtle mushroom undertones and was topped with fresh cilantro for an aromatic finish. My wife, who is usually sensitive to cilantro in hot broth, still found this enjoyable. The noodles were lovely, like a thinner version of udon. One thing we both agreed on tho, was the beef could have been a bit more tender. Fooki Belly Bowl - My son gave this a solid 5 stars haha! The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender, with a beautiful balance of five-spice, soy, and a touch of sweetness. It was on the fatty side, as expected, but if you're a pork belly fan, this dish is a must try. There are still so many items on the menu we're eager to try, and we'll definitely be back to do so. Tried their Lou rou fan. If you had it before in Taiwan, it is not the same here. It's a favorite common dish in Taiwan featuring generous chunks of braised pork, with gravy over rice with vegetables. Here it is mainly oily gravy with sautéed bits of pork and vegetables over rice in a small bowl. If you are used to Taiwan style, you will be disappointed. read more
