I was wondering what this place was every time I drove past Pearl Kai. Pulled it up on YELP and looked interesting with great reviews. My husband and I came here for lunch on a weekday, we got seated right away and greeted by very friendly employees. There are about 11 tables and a bar counter. Ambiance has a cafe feel, kind of feels like you're in Chinatown but on the Leeward side. Food is Taiwanese and it was such a refreshing change from all the ethnic places we normally go to. Our server was so friendly and made great suggestions. We shared all of the dishes we ordered. We had the Fooki Bao, Grandpa's Rolling Beef and the Boom Boom Chicken Plate, everything was delicious! Fooki Bao bun was so soft and the braised pork was tasty and accompanied by the perfect veggies, shredded cabbage and not sure what the other veggies were but so GOOD! Grandpa's Rolling Beef was thin strips of beef and shredded veggies wrapped in a scallion pancake and grilled to a crisp with Hoisin sauce drizzled on top, YUMMY! Boom Boom Chicken was so crispy and flavorful with fried Basil on a bed of rice and baby bok choy, TASTY! Also had the Lychee Jasmine Tea and they had a promotion for a free topping, so I ordered Lychee Jelly. Will definitely be back so I can try their noodle soups! We were stuffed! This place is seriously tasty. We were the first to arrive so service was great, but staff remained attentive even after the restaurant started filling up. They start you off with cucumber water which is always welcome and refreshing. I opted for the vintage black milk tea which tasted kind of vintage. It was good, but it just had a bitter aftertaste indicative of very strong black tea or tea that is steeped too long. Still good, but I'll probably try something else next time. We both had braised broth for our soups, which provided for a rich and soothing soup. I got the mushroom version which had some of my favorite mushrooms. I also had a side of chili oil which doesn't really add unbearable heat, but has a really nice flavor overall. We also added the sweetheart eggs which are like marinated tea eggs. The tea flavor is very prominent once you bite into the egg so it was delicious. Definitely coming back. I want to try the chicken bao, but this soup was so good it might just be my go to. read more

Couldn't decide what we wanted at the Pearl Country Club Night Market, so we ended up at Fooki's for dinner. I figured that since Pork Belly is one of my husband's favorite foods, this would be a good place to try. He enjoyed the Pork Belly Bowl and the Bao, but I don't think he was familiar with the (Taiwanese) version or flavors made at Fooki's. He said it wasn't bad, just different. He also didn't like the pickled veggies, so I ate them. My monster pork chops was delicious. Moist but crunchy at the same time. Loved the egg and tofu hiding underneath too. Tons of flavor. I love spice and asked if they had any hot sauce or chili oil and was not disappointed. They gave me a small dish of their house chili oil, and it was so yum. Put it on everything and then bought a bottle to go home. It's probably the most expensive one I've ever purchased, but it is so good. Would go again, with or without my husband, just to try some of the noodle dishes. I noticed while waiting for our check that nearly everyone else in the restaurant ordered a noodle soup dish. If you come during regular dining times, then expect a wait to be seated as this place can get busy. Totally worth the wait, though. Delicious Taiwanese food in an unexpected location...right across the street from Pearlridge Center on Kamehameha Hwy. My go-tos: ** Boom Boom Chicken (a la carte) - perfectly crispy fried chicken with a yummy sweet chili aioli sauce ** Holy Pork Nachos - not your regular nachos, as stir-fried pork with basil, tomato, and cheddar cheese are served on top of scallion pancakes ** Floral Black Milk Tea iced with boba (extra $0.75) - I'm not usually big on boba drinks unless the boba is made just right...and this place does it so right! I think I would drop in just to pick up this drink to go. I suggest coming here with others so you can share. While my go-tos I mentioned above are always a winner, it's nice to order lots of different things from the menu and have everyone try them out. You might find something that you like that you wouldn't have ordered on your own. The Grandpa Rolling Beef was one of them for me. Food was costly and I didn't want to splurge on another plate somewhere else. Service was ok. I think I was the one who greeted them and them smile. We've heard so many great things about this restaurant and finally made the time to try it out. There was a line to get in, but the wait wasn't long. It was good to talk with other customers who had eaten here before. They gave us the scoop on what to order. They said the Li hing fries are a must! We're not big li hing people, but it was so good! Especially with the chili aioli sauce. The Grandpa's Rolling Beef was excellent! We don't eat spicy food, and I've had Laskas in the past that were too spicy for me, but this one was delicious! It was very flavorful and just right for me. I was so excited with the Veggies Scallion Noodles that I forgot to take a picture! And it was my favorite dish! This was a few months back but I was really impressed with the food. Unique takes on the food dishes and they were delicious. I really enjoyed the jajang noodles. Interesting take with using Parmesan cheese but it really did work! Boom boom chicken was also crispy and delicious. Definitely liked the li-hing sweet potato fries and they were over powering either. Service wise I remember it being a little slow considering we went during a slow time on a Sunday. Was super excited Fooki when I saw the menu because it has so many things that reminded me of home, unfortunately the taste just didn't it the spot. Perhaps I just ordered all the wrong things... The Mala Wonton Noodles (1/5) : typically this dish features a chili oil sauce but I'm not sure what they used for their dish because it came out looking super orange and almost tasted like Tabasco. I'm not sure how else to describe the flavor but aside from it not being authentic (fine we are in Hawaii) it just didn't taste very good either. I had to ask for some of the house made chili sauce on the side which made it slightly more tolerable but still ... really disappointed. The wonton itself is okay, good amount of meat and the wonton wrapping is not too thick. Grandma Beef Roll (2/5): aw man once again was so excited for some beef roll action but again just didn't hit the spot. They use a scallion pancake for the outside but it was not very crispy or flaky at all. The inside the beef was plain no taste. Essentially all the taste came from the dark hoisin sauce they just squirted on top. Ambience (4/5): I will say the restaurant was cute. They played Chinese pop overhead and it was nice to hear some familiar songs. The decor of the restaurant is also very cute, tries to incorporate a little Taiwanese restaurant vibe. Overall: I'm disappointed , but there's a lot of other enticing looking things on the menu. My second time here and the service is great. The food is excellent and the have a great menu selection. You don't the average to wait long for your food. Whoa! This place is great especially that is not in town when I'm working on this side of Aiea. We found ourselves wanting comfort Asian food after being drizzled on while we shopped for a few pleasures and early Christmas treasures at the swap meet. It's Taiwanese fusion comfort food. Our server, Lani was super chill and gave us AWESOME service. After giving her our order, I was able to soak everything in as we were one of the first to arrive when they opened. Ambience is chill local vibe with modern Asian art. I fell in love with the cucumber water served and our first dish "Grandpa's Roll" which was light and savory with the first bite a crunch and delicious light filing. I could have eaten all of it by myself but we were in share mode. If you like to try something Asian new with some spice, you'll love it here. Q: How many Shanghai Bok Choy can you find in the Stir Fry Veggies appetizer ($13) that lists Shanghai Bok Choy as the primary ingredient? A: ZERO. Good thing they fixed it when we brought it to their attention. It was mostly cabbage at that point. Very tasty though. After we pointed out that the star ingredient was missing, they brought it out with the Bok Choy but the flavor wasn't as a good as with plain cabbage. I guess that's what happens when you bring stuff up, oh well. I really really wanted the Fall In Love pumpkin ramen that my friend was raving about. It has been discontinued. So was the Monster Chicken and the Pineapple Chicken Fried Sandwich. Boba for boba tea not available until after a certain time. Unfortunate. I settled for the Veggie Scallion Noodles ($14), which was fine but the broth on the bottom was sweet. I'm not use to sweet noodles. A bit strange. My Vietnamese Ice Coffee was upgraded for dollar more ($5.50 total) with the Tiramisu foam but they forgot the grated nutmeg on top. My friend had the Tiramisu Cold Brew and hers came with grated nutmeg (or maybe it was cinnamon) on top. Inconsistent. At least the brew was pretty strong. Li Hing Sweet Potato Fries ($8) came with a small side dish of a creamy dipping sauce and it was super good. I enjoyed this the most out of all. PRICE: $56.00 with 20% tip for two drinks, two appetizers and one main dish at lunch time. SERVICE: good, fast, efficient. PARKING: free in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center. Second time here. We love the food, everything was tasty. The interior is cute, kind of like an urban eatery experience. The service is good, however I personally find it kind of odd that they don't bring out the appetizers first, then the entrees. My entree came out with one of the appetizers, then my bf's entree came out after another app we had ordered came out after my entree. Third app we ordered came out last, after bf's food. I wouldn't say I'm upset, but it's unusual timing compared to other restaurants we've eaten at. Anywayyyyys we love the food, had a good time. Staff is nice, timely. When in Aiea - Fooki's. I had never had Taiwanese food prior to trying this spot but they've successfully made me a fan! Their Boom Boom chicken and Grandpa Rolling Beef are my absolute favorite dishes. But everything else I've tried is just as flavorful and delicious. The best part is all of their meals can be enjoyed with boba teas! Their fruit teas with boba are so refreshing and compliments all the food choices! Portions are great for both individual meals and for sharing, but you'll definitely get to try a variety of dishes with family-style dining! I tried Fooki in August 2024 for the first time. Seems like Chinese noodle soup restaurants are starting to become popular in Honolulu which is awesome. My first indulgence with Chinese noodle soup was in Chinatown San Francisco about 5 years ago. Started with the Fooki Potstickers $14. These were pretty tasty and plump. I'd strongly suggest ordering these if you like appetizers. I had the Classic Braised Beef Noodle Soup $22. The broth was pretty bold and spicy, but the beef was pretty tough and chewy. The noodles were a little thick for my liking, but they were firm and filling. My guest ordered the Wonton Noodle Soup Braised $19 and a Fooki Belly Bowl $18 to go for her daughter. Hopefully their dishes were satisfying. Service was standard. There's no condiments on the table, so you'll need to request it. Parking was abundant. read more

It's been a while since we first tried here. I called to see if we could make dinner reservations for tonight and the girl on the phone said, "We don't take reservations for dinner on the same day..." Ok, that's strange. Then I said, "Oh no, we wanted to come down in about 20 mins. It's Friday, 4:30pm so if it's not busy right now, can we get a table for 2?" Then she said "Ok, you can come down, there's no wait, but that could change." Alright. So then I repeated to her, "So you said, you don't take dinner reservations on the same day, but if we wanted to make reservations?" Then she said, "If you wanted to make same day reservations, you need to call the morning of..." Ok whatever, that's really dumb. So we got there and already there's an old Unwelcoming sign infront of the door saying something of the sort - "Do not enter and wait to be seated." Forgot to take pics. I remember when this place first opened, it was busy w/a line out the door so they probably couldn't manage all the people rushing in at the same time, but now is different. It's slow. A male host opens the window, and we ask for a table for 2. He opens the door and motions to seat us at a tiny 2 top table in the back, but there was obviously lots of open 4 top tables by the window so I requested there instead. He speaks quickly as if in a rush and hands us menus. Lack of customer service is apparent here. Our server Todd answered our questions. So unfortunately, they no longer use the same noodles which is what made it so impressive the first time. They've also changed managers, and the atmosphere is just not welcoming. Host and bartender need major customer service training and improvement. This is a reflection of management. We ordered the same items from our first review. Classic Original Beef Noodle Soup,$16 - good broth. CowWow Braised Noodle Soup, $20 - this was spicy and pretty good. This time, the noodles were yellow, egg noodle style, but not much info was given on it as our server didn't know. Noodles are just ok. The broth was pretty good so 3 stars for the food and for our server. Vegetables we're decent. Most of the meat was tender like Oxtail soup style meat but some was a bit over cooked. They do give a good amount of meat. Took home leftovers. Can't eat like this too often. Too rich and oily. Maybe better to do take-out if you're willing to pay $16-$20 with no service. Egg is boiled in tea so the exterior and interior color is dark. A bit concerning at first because when I cut the egg open, it looked weird, but our server assured us it wasn't spoiled. We did notice a manager type, Asian man overlooking the bar, but he disappeared and didn't check on the tables. Upon leaving, the female bartender and male host were both on their phones and didn't greet us or thank us. Very unprofessional. It wasn't busy at all. This might be the first 5 star review I give a Chinese restaurant. What's more surprising is that Mink was the one that suggested coming here and she doesn't really care for Chinese food that much. We arrived during lunch and the restaurant was quite full but we got lucky by getting the last available table. The staff greeted us immediately and got us menus along with water shortly after we sat. They have bar seating if all the tables are taken. Mink and I both agree that customer service was excellent here. It impressed us both. They were also quick to bring us shoyu and sauté sauce when we asked. Their sauté sauce is tasty and I used it all on the meat and tendon. It took us a bit to decide what to order. We finally decided on starting with their Grandpa Rolling Beef. I wanted Sichuan Spicy Beef Shank & Tripe or MaLa Wonton but we didn't see many people order them and trusted the masses. Glad we did because we both loved the dish and we highly recommend it. There was a good amount of beef in the rolls and the sake hoisin sauce was legit. I personally enjoyed the different textural components of the dish. Mink got their COW WOW Noodle Soup (Original w/no tendon). I got the COW WOW Noodle Soup but Hearty Braised. Both were good but Mink agreed the broth in mine was more flavorful. The portion size is generous and we couldn't finish. They do offer take out containers which was nice. Their beef is so tender and some pieces just fell apart. The tendon was large and very soft. Personally, I was just ok with the noodles. Veggies were nice and I love beef on the bone so this dish was an overall winner for me. read more

Well seasoned and perfectly fried. 8/10 for the curry. I didn't know it would be spicy but she was spicy spicy. From shareable bites, noodles, and rice dishes with various protein and vegetarian offerings Fooki has it down. I ended up ordering the Jajang Noodles without parmesan cheese. I've never tried jajangmyeon before but found theirs to be tasty! On a large bed of noodles came various greens, the sauce, and the proteins. The texture of the noodles was chewy, the black bean sauce was savory and sweet, the pork and tofu came in bite-sized pieces, and the sprouts and cabbage provided a nice fresh crunch. After mixing it all it was a flavor and texture explosion! The portion was massive and filling--I could only eat half of it. My friends ordered their dishes and we all raved about our food and experience. The restaurant has an industrial, homey, and Asian-influenced vibe to it. Service was good and although our waiter was busy juggling a large party, he was friendly, helpful, and funny! It took a while to get his attention at times but our food came out relatively fast and we were taken care of. We waited for a while cause the had to set up the table but, it was okay as not everyone was there yet. 6:00 was a good time cause it's not too busy yet. The 2 hours we were there, people were constantly coming in. The place is clean, and comfortable. I liked that the chairs weren't matching lol..made it feel like someone's back porch. Overall a very solid choice for good Taiwanese inspired cuisine. I tried the following items: Fooki Bao (Pork Belly) 4/5 Grandpa Rolling Beef (Scallion pancake wrapped with marinated sliced beef and veggies) 4/5 Cow Wow Noodle Soup (Beef Shank) 4/5 My favorite was the Cow Wow Noodle Soup. The meat was really tender and fell right off the bone. The only reason I did not give this dish a 5/5 was because the broth could've been more flavorful. Before I get to the food, I checked out the bathroom and it was the cleanest, adequately equipped shared bathroom in a small little eatery that I've seen in years. Actually had soap and paper towels I mean kudos to Management. Foodwise, ordered the boom boom chicken, beef noodle soup, potstickers, chubby rib, cold brew coffee, a few beers and drinks and a several other dishes. Found out about this place when I ate at Egghead. Apparently they have the same owners. Broth was really good. Mild flavor. The wonton was a little sweet but very tasty.
