I have been eating dim sum for over 35 years across countless restaurants, and this was easily the worst experience I've ever had. My father used to make dim sum professionally, so my family knows what fresh dim sum looks and tastes like. Every single dish served to us tasted stale, reheated, and old. It was so glaringly bad that my elderly parents actually had to call over the server and owner to ask directly why they were serving us yesterday's leftovers - never once have I seen my parents done this . I'll probably go for 3 and 1/2 Stars. Ambience is about what you'd expect. Lots of overhead fluorescent lighting. Food is basically Westerner style Chinese food. They do have some authentic dishes. Dim sum is workable. Prices are super high for the area though, but you do get big portions. read more

This place is my absolute favorite when I'm craving legit Cantonese seafood. The fish, crab, you name it, it's always fresh and cooked perfectly, just like luxury seafood restaurants in Guangzhou, China. I swear, every bite takes me back to family dinners. It's also a perfect spot for big groups (they have a karaoke machine). We've rolled up with over 10 people, and they took care of us with huge portions, lazy Susans spinning, no stress. And if you speak Cantonese, chat up the aunties! When we arrived, there was some goop on my chair and plate. The lazy Susan on the table was still dirty from the party before. The restroom was horrible as well as the service. A woman was trying to sell us food from a cart that had no temperature regulation and a man handing us waters spilled a whole cup and walked away without wiping it or apologizing. Do not recommend coming here on holidays/busy days! We ordered via phone the day before Christmas for Christmas evening. They made it sound like we didn't need to order this far in advance but we wanted to place it early to make sure everything went smoothly. Our order pickup time was made for 6:30pm. We get there and there is a mass amount of people waiting for takeout orders and also a lot of people dining in. We ask about our order and they say it's not ready but that it is coming. Okay, you'd think that means it is coming soon right? Wrong. We wait... and wait. Around 7:00pm we ask what's the estimated finish time for the food and all they say is "it's coming". We ask again for a time so that we can get a better idea of how to proceed, and they repeat again "it's coming". They refused to give an estimated time, at which point it was like they weren't even taking us seriously... so we left. Stop taking orders if you are an hour behind on orders!!! There were people waiting for orders since 6:20pm and we left around 7:20pm. Why make it sound like we didn't even need to order ahead the day before, just for our food to not be ready at even CLOSE to the time it's set for. If you want real authentic chinese food, come here for one of the best experiences of chinese cuisine. The dim sum was absolutely delicious with the bean curd roll being my favorite. The dessert dim sum choices such as the egg tart or sesame balls were amazing as well. Felt hungry at 8:50pm and despite them closing at 9pm, they were able to accommodate our order and get the food out hot and ready within 10 minutes! We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken, Chinese Broccoli, Wonton Soup, and Crispy Noodles. They were all solid, except the wonton soup was below average. Would recommend pairing an extra bowl of rice to-go with the Kung Pao chicken. We hesitated to order from here because of the reviews on Yelp but honestly not bad! Food here is pretty good, also their waitress/servers has always been very nice to me. They also got some dishes that other places don't. Like the beef innards, I haven't found any other places in Seattle that sells that, and they make that really good too~ Their dim sum is also really good, but make sure you go early cause it's more fresh, they stop making them probably around 2-3pm. The house or special fried rice is some of the Best in Seattle, but the head Server is the only one who speaks English and not too friendly. I've been there dozen of times and never encountered her before. She is rash and does not have a friendly tone, mannerism or persona! She identified herself as "the Boss"! I purchased the house fried rice to go, which listed as $13.99 on the menu, she initiall told me $17.00 when I went to pay. I asked why and she changed the price to $13.00. When she gave the receipt it's handwriting in Chinese and no tax is shown, only a price! Came here yesterday with the family. It was hard to review it because the food itself some were really good and some were just horrible. The neighborhood is absolutely horrendous and gross. Huge population of homeless in the back of the store. Litter is everywhere including mattresses. The footballs amazing and a must get. The shumai and hagao is gross as hell. The egg custard filling was spot on but crust was nasty and falling Apart every-time you try to put it in your mouth. Beef Tripe and daikon cake has no flavor. Foo Lam use to be really reliable. I always got their beef congee when I was feeling under the weather. But this pass weekend really made me not ever want to come back. Over the weekend I was feeling under the weather and ordered congee and one Chinese donut. My mom went to get the food and also ordered a dim sum order of sticky rice. When the food came out my mom checked everything and the Chinese donut was wrapped in rice paper and the sticky rice was not the dim style but the fried version. I understand there are different versions of Chinese donuts and sticky rice. But it's really up to the restaurant to make sure that they got their order right and not assume. My mom also checked the bag and there were no utensils. After this experience I will not be coming back. read more

These were not a successful dry and not enough pork. I also got the wonton soup. It was on average for the wonton soup that I tend to find here. I miss a thicker wonton soup with a better broth. This seemed a little bit watery to me, but I think that's probably just my palate. All in all I would recommend, but I would skip the steamed pork buns and the wonton soup. read more

It pains me to say this, but getting dim sum at Foo Lam is like getting the off-brand version of your favorite dim sum. But not like the premium Trader Joe's or Costco's Kirkland brands. Not like Target's very reliable Good & Gather. Maybe Walmart's passable Great Value? Actually, on second thought, maybe not. It's more of an impression of dim sum that someone had from looking at pictures of dim sum. And it's unfortunate, because I would looove a Great Value dim sum this close to where I live. We ordered 4 of our favorite items one lazy weekend morning, and here's the rundown in decreasing levels of resemblance of what we expected: - The chicken feet were honestly pretty spot on. Flavor, texture more or less as expected. Pretty average, but nothing that really shook me one way or another - The pork spare ribs I'll give a little bit of slack. Any presentation suffers from being taken off the plate in a steamer and being tossed into a a to-go box. But while the spare ribs were decently cooked, they were lacking the black bean flavor that usually makes this dish sing - I am unconvinced by the "roe" on the siu mai. The texture of the roe looks flaky and it is utterly flavorless. The texture of the pork itself was off as well, but the flavor wasn't that bad - The footballs (or salty dumplings as they might be listed elsewhere), were really something else. The exterior is fried to a hard shell and the interior is overfilled with the glutionous mochi. The entire thing is entirely off balance and I didn't even bother finishing these There are plenty of other great places to eat in this plaza that I would recommend before going to Foo Lam. Based off some of the reviews maybe it used to be better, but it was certainly an awful first impression: bad enough that I don't plan on returning anytime soon. read more

Awful. Came on a weekend for dim sum and the food was cold and not fresh. Both the rice roll with beef and the bean curd roll tasted like it was going bad-took one bite and left the rest untouched. The beef was sour, and the noodles were hard. They had one lady pushing the only two available carts. She would push one, make her way around the three tables, then go back to grab the other cart. At no time in the hour we were there, were the carts refilled. They just sat there. On top of the bad food, they also scammed me when it came time to pay. The check out lady wrote the accurate prices down per dish on the tab, but charged me the higher price on all of them at check out. I'm making up the prices, but say some dishes cost $5, and some cost $4. The handwritten tab reflected all the accurate prices of both $5 and $4, but the total calculation reflected the higher amount, and I was charged $5 per dish for everything. It wasn't a lot, but about $2-3 more than what I should have paid. I would have mentioned something, but the woman didn't speak English. No big deal. I took out the difference in the tip, am writing this review, and will never go back to that dump. Sorry, if you purposely change prices, you're trash. Everyone working, minus the lady that checked us out, was nice. The restaurant is in a small shopping center where parking is tight. The restaurant is dated. read more

When the food gets eaten so fast and no pictures can be taken in time, you know you're in for a treat for some yummylicious dishes :) Been here multiple times and here's my overdue review of this solid Chinese/Vietnamese place. DIM SUM NOTES: --Seriously, this place = fantastic for dim sum and it proves to be a great alternative to Joy Palace, especially on the busy weekends --Cart Style: Like most places, the dim sum plates comes around in the carts --Service: Over time, I have noticed the staff stepping up their game in giving good service. So don't let the stern faces of the aunties scare you off :) Plus, if you go during dim sum hours, do expect slower service. My tip for getting someone's attention: Wave/stand up and make yourself obvious --Food Quality & Quantity = Solid. Seriously. Food here is awesome. When in doubt, order: Fried Shrimp Balls (takes like 20min to cook), Chicken Feet, Baked BBQ Buns, Tripe...aiiii. Basically anything that looks good will taste good. In addition, you don't really need the soy sauce or chili since most of the dishes are perfectly seasoned. OTHER FOOD NOTES: --If you're not a fan of dim sum, Foo Lam does deliver some pretty tasty Chinese/Vietnamese dishes. --My favorites here: Salty Fish Fried Rice, Honey Garlic Spareribs, a veggie dish, #8 soup (can run out/be limited for the day), honey walnut prawns, and etc --For large groups, go for the banquet style aka the usual 7-10 course meal. There are three options you can choose from, with varying prices. In my humble opinion, this is the best deal you can do with a group of 8-12 and everyone can be full afterwards Ahh. The four items $18.27 (ha gow, sui mai, phoenix claws, and another dim sum dish-forgot what it's called-), were not very good. Service was mediocre. My cup had a small piece of hair and plates felt sticky. Tea was charged $0.50 per person. Visa accepted. This place is located in a shopping complex, a little bit hidden. Outside of Honey Court, this is my favorite Chinese food restaurant in South Seattle. My menu favorites are Chicken Chow Mein, Kung Pao Chicken, Salt & Pepper Tofu, and Honey Walnut Shrimp. The Chow Mein is a standout to me, I'm a Chow Mein fiend and Foo Lam makes some of the best. This is a hidden neighborhood gem, great for ordering takeout with a quick 15-20m turn around. Hmm, tried a new place and regretted it. Not good. It's in s big strip mall with crazy parking. Walking in, it's a bit dingy and worn out looking. Expectations were lowered as soon as we walked in.
