I gave the benefit of doubt when I saw the low rating and I have to say that much of what I read I felt was very accurate about this diner. We are new to the area and have been frequenting the clinton diner mostly. However, since we are always in Flemington I decided to check this diner out with my son. I generally don't give ratings just for food on eateries. I take into consideration the location, cleanliness, personalities/customer service, selection of food, comfort and the businesses practices. First impressions matter. We were greeted and seated which went well but we had to step over a spill of water on the floor. That is not what was poor, it was the lack of sense of urgency to wipe it up that was surprising. The water stayed there, though acknowledged by various staff (including hostess and front desk ladies). One person slipped and various other patrons found their way to step over. Disturbing seeing that several elderly were seated nearby. Moving on to ambiance and business itself.... it's clean. Partly why I give it two stars is the fact it does appear very clean. Feels very new inside and modern. I wasn't crazy about the clear booth walls though and having to have to watch a person across from me chewing his food. Super turn off there. I felt like they went for an "open feeling" and instead it's too transparent with no real privacy to even have a discussion. The floors and table was clean. Menus clean (yes I hate crusty dirty laminated menus germ fest hello) The waiter was nice. Very personable. However I was extremely disappointed and felt MISLEAD when the bill arrived. When ordering and having told him it was our first time there we went through the meal for my son and he asked "what meat would he like on the side" and offered "various types of fries options in lieu of potatoes since kids meals came with them. He failed to mention all of these things were EXTRA costs. I even asked him what came with it and he replied "fries and we also have cuz fries too" as if an option. For my meal I asked if I could substitute the peppers in my California omelettes for another vegetable and he said yes. Yet again on my bill it was EXTRA because that type of vegetable was MORE. overall all those options he told us about came to over $12 extra on the bill. I felt like it was an approach vs an error because how can it be EVERY single thing was an error? The food is VERY overpriced. I saw this and related to the reviews on this but I was still willing to try the food and expected for the price portions and flavor would be worth it. The wait staff have cute little matching uniforms but who cares? There is booth seating and booths with chair seating options as well as bar seating. Tables are connected to walls. Cups were never refilled too. Which moves me into my next review point. Food. My son loved the silver dollar pancakes. Felt it was tasty. As well as the scrambled eggs with cheese (which by the way a slice of Kraft cheese on top costs almost $3, wtf?) he loved the hot chocolate but when I tasted it it was very Swiss miss like. I guess perhaps he wouldn't know better as he doesn't drink them. Lol the fries (which we were told for kids was in place of potatoes) were very oily and tasted crisp but very fast good like. It's like a fatty oil taste which made for tasty if you like fattening fast food type of frying. The sausage links which again were made to sound part of the meal were delicious and were the fat type not the skinny processed type. My egg white omelette (the California omelette) was ok. It was very bland and no real flavors. I put some pepper to taste something but even though bland the ingredients appeared to be fresh. I don't eat salt but I've never had a California omelette without some natural type of seasoning option. The mozzarella is not fresh mozzarella. I was told my options for toast but yet again was neglected to be informed bread type has added cost when it was presented as options. The I ed coffee was terrible. It took 6 half and half's to get it to lighten. I couldn't believe it. And I don't usually use a lot of sugar but I felt to get it less bitter I had to pour it in. Food was subpar, period. Lastly, I want to mention something I've learned with this experience. Personality and customer service friendly smiles should NEVER fall to a waist side. The ladies in front don't even bother to look at you. They act like robots taking payments and never asked how was your experience or if everything was ok. Nothing. No personable experience. It was sad. I came to realize that that old diner in clinton as much as it's old school in look the fact they are old school in manners and professionalism, that goes a heck of a long wAy. To me I'd drive the extra 15 min to go to clinton vs go to this place again. I never left a diner feeling swindled and taken advantage of yet. Today that changed. We were there on Saturday, 3/14. An older gentleman at the table nearby happened to feel ill and started vomiting. Most of it landed on the table. The staff were very accommodating and did not create any fuss, as the man would have been embarrassed by the event. However, the bus staff clearly didn't understand the circumstances because one wiped the table with a (dirty/used) dish rag, and another provided another quick wipe down before replacing the paper placemat and utensils to set it up for the next guest. I've never been more disgusted in my life at a dining establishment. Furthermore, this is in the midst of COVID-19 outbreak -- so why are the tabletops not being disinfected between guests anyway? Where are the disposable towels and higher standards of cleaning? I've told everyone I know to avoid this place. Zero stars. read more

If I could put no stars I would... last night my husband and I walked in and the women at the front basically ignored us. Not only did they ignore us at the counter the young girl put us in the side booth where we sat for 10 minutes with no service .... no waiter ... no water ... no service. WE WALKED OUT. it gets better ... as we walked out the lady who looked like an owner looked at us and didn't even ask if we were alright or if there was anything wrong. Terrible service. Ordered a sandwich and a salad... should not take over an hour to reach the table. The waiter politely let us know the food was going to take a bit, but there's definitely no way it should take that long; especially since people seated after my party are getting their food. If the diner is aware the kitchen gets backed up like this, how has this problem not already been addressed and solved. I don't know how many 1 star reviews have to get left for the current owner to see that this diner is sailing through choppy waters. The prices are ridiculously high for diner food as well. What a disappointment! The first thing that came to my attention was the complete turnover in staff. Our waitress, last time (and unfortunately, this time) apologized to us for several glitches in the service, by announcing candidly to us that she was "just filling in" tonight, and "none of this was her fault." It's painfully obvious from our last couple of trips to the Flemington Raritan Diner, that it is not only under new management/ownership, but that it is not going well at all. For one thing, the prices have gone up, for basically, the same food, on the same plate. Some of our basic, go-to favorites have been deleted from their giant new menu. Or the price has gone up by at least $3! Last night, our order consisted of a French Dip Sandwich, a Milk Shake, and a Coke, and it came to almost $23!! On a recent trip for a quick breakfast, our waitress put a butter dish on our table that contained a few discarded butter packets! The new menu is big and glossy, with new additions everywhere, but it seemed like they were sold out of quite a few things offered on the menu. Good luck selling any overpriced milkshakes in the same parking lot as a SONIC! (haha!) Sorry to see this change in ownership. If you're going to charge pretentious diner prices, you need to up your game more than just with standard diner fare and an overpriced milkshake/sundae menu! read more

The chicken fingers and therefore anything made with them (like the chicken finger club) is amazing. The fries are nice and crisp. Most of the soups are really good, but I found the matzo ball soup to be a little too bland. The coffee is rich. The desserts tend to be typical diner fare, so you are safe with the traditional diner foods. I haven't been terribly adventurous in my food choices. The portion sizes are good for the price. The service is usually very good. I've been there are busy and slow times and haven't really had any problems. read more

Went here for lunch. The food is ok and my server was nice. The reason for the low rating was because my dining experience was ruined by a staff member's inconsiderate actions. This man pulled up an area rug and whipped it up in the air to straighten it out, flinging dirt and debris in my direction while I was in the middle of eating. AWFUL!!! Just awful! I was in on Sunday with my husband, my bacon was burnt on top of my pancakes and I waited for my server for a long time. I was told it would extra $$$ for bacon. I have been here before and the food was edible. However, this visit was a disaster. I order a simple bacon and eggs over easy with hash browns. As I sat there waiting for my breakfast others had come in to order and when they received their orders I wondered what could have happened to mine and asked my server. He went to check. He came back with my order and said " oh it was back there it didn't have a tag (which he forgot to write)". Now here's the fun part. The eggs were now room temp as was the bacon and hash browns. Drove by this place for years and decided to stop in for my Rosh Hashanah meal!!! Doug is the best waiter ever!!! Brocoli soup was good. Challah bread is fresh & hot!!! Creole Shrimp is not spicey which is fine by me. Apple Crisp desert to end my meal for a sweet new year!!! This is the nicest cleanest & decorated diner I have ever been to. Where do I begin. Came here around noon on a Sunday, it was very busy but we were seated fast, little did I know that was the high point of the meal. Wait staff was rude and our waitress forgot to bring creamer with the coffee. Seems like a basic thing to forget. The food comes fast and my girlfriend finds a black hair in her omelette, my girlfriend has brown hair, obviously not hers. We are rushed with the check soon after we get our food. Be careful at the cash register when you pay your bill. The clerk (manager?) quickly pushed the 20% tip button in the screen, hoping I would not notice, then turned it around to me for my okay,. I saw the total and told him that I did not push the tip button, and that he should not have pushed it without my say so. He denied he did that, which really concerned me. After walking out of this diner several years ago due to not receiving water after 40 minutes of sitting at a table, I went to dinner here tonight and I will never set foot in this diner again. I understand that there is a staff shortage, but that doesn't explain the one hour wait I had from the time we ordered our food until we received it. Once it arrived, I had to send my $7.99 Challah French toast order (2 slices) back because it was cold. When I was checking out and was asked how everything was, I told them not great. Response? We have eaten here six times now. That includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I've only found two diners in NJ that are better. The help is usually well- trained and knowledgable. The place is well maintained and kept very clean. The food is exceptional for a diner - and the senior specials are a veritable bargain. They are very accommodating of special requests. When I want a fine restaurant I go to Agricola or Eno Terra or the Witherspoon Grille. When I want a diner - I go here. A giant microwave oven! We were hungry coming home late after a long weekend. It would have taken very little to satisfy our appetite. I must say, this was the worst food in a long time. We had to settle with Taco Bell the night before, so again, any half decent food would have been phenomenal at that point. We ordered nachos, buffalo wings, burgers, and meatball hoagie. All, I mean all were just horrrible. Bread and tortilla chips were stale, wings were mushy, burger was dry, not one thing tasted even close to being edible. This review is really for the MANAGER named Steve- CHERYL- I hope u read this! First of all when I walked in I felt like I was invisible! I sat there for several minutes until I decided to go up to him and ask if i seated myself- then he gave me a hard time about being a single diner but still wanting my own table- he suggested I sit at the counter- that makes me uncomfortable so I asked AGAIN if I could have my own table- he proceeds to take me allllll the wayyyyy into the back and sits me at this HUGE table where there was room for like 10 more people. This was somewhat embarrassing for me! Then my waitress comes out promptly- she was sweet and professional- her name was Kat. My food came, besides the soup being a bit cold, the food was great! I was on my phone reading when I overheard the manager STEVE asking the two diners next to me Why They were sitting at a large booth sonce there was just two of them- They told him that they had bad backs and the waitress, Kat let them move there. He then yelled at poor Kat for allowing them to move. I was floored! It was right in front of customers and he made a spectacle of himself- Kat looked upset and I felt horrible for her! That was my experience there- a crappy one. It seems that this manager really is nuts about seating! I understand that it was lunchtime- but there was plenty of open tables regardless. I tend to think I know a thing or two about diners. Especially diners in NJ. Not a fan of this diner. I went here for lunch on a rainy, dreary day in the mood for a soup and sandwich. The chicken orzo soup was good. Basic, nothing fancy. Then, came the tuna sandwich. Worst tuna sandwich I ever tasted. It tasted "tinny" and not fresh. The cole slaw that came with closely resembled soup. How does a diner screw up cole slaw? The fries were the best art of the meal. Server was friendly and attentive as well, hence the 2 stars. I'm pretty fair with my reviews. Ever since this diner was sold, quality of food has diminished dramatically. I always expect an off meal at any restaurant, but three in a row is unacceptable. Had dinner with my wife, the dinner was ok but I really come for their delicious cheese danishes. Since both our dinners came with desert my wife kindly let me order two cheese danishes to go.
