    Sunshine wrap
    Christine C.

A charming, diner style restaurant on an adorable Main Street! I stopped by for a quick lunch, and let the server know I only had thirty minutes. She was very accommodating. I got the Sunshine wrap (apparently a favorite,) and it was tasty and well-priced. The parking lot behind the restaurant is an added bonus. A cute, friendly and nostalgic spot worth visiting for your next casual meal.

Historic downtown Flemington, NJ, isn't what it used to be. The beautiful Union Hotel on Main Street is boarded up. The old Hunterdon County Courthouse where the famous Lindbergh kidnapping trial was held in the presence of the international press in 1932 is now a forgotten dusty corner. It is up to the new generation to save this burg and restore its pride with new energy. I was thinking of how the mighty had fallen when I walked into the JS Shaker Cafe on the west side of Main. A homey looking luncheonette with counter and kitchen in back behind a large dining room, I was greeted immediately by a server I couldn't yet see. There were two seniors at the counter engaged in conversation, and they paused as I pulled out a stool, sat down and ordered coffee/milk from the young woman who appeared with menu from the kitchen area. The convo resumed and I ordered the Italian Omelette, which came with home fries and rye toast. The java was strong. The breakfast platter pretty ordinary. Although they advertise 5 eggers, I wanted but 3. The eggs were slightly overcooked and firmer than I prefer. The potatoes were greasier than expected, with a gritty texture. The toast was not traditional rye, but a lighter variant lacking the sour savoriness of old fashioned rye. Each of the elements was a bit off, but still adequately edible. It just so happened that there was a Yelp bonus coupon pop-up that appeared on checking in. I showed it to the server who refused to honor it, claiming she was unaware of the deal. The 10% would have been nice, but I could overlook it. Later reading showed that this had happened before. Too, there was no savings from using 3 eggs rather than 5. That would have been a welcoming touch. Not this morning. By the time I walked back out into cold February, I knew this place would not be part of the salvation of Flemington. Rather, it was more of what had brought it to this economic dystopia.

Stuffed French toast is I recall.

It's such a great local spot, and I don't think enough people realize what it is or how good it's become. My mom and I stopped in for lunch and sat outside on Main Street, which was honestly so lovely. It felt really special to just sit, enjoy a great meal, and be part of the community. We met Mo, who took such great care of us and made the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. We started with the hummus, which was incredibly fresh and smooth, and you could tell everything was made with care. For our mains, we had the lamb chops and the lemon chicken, both of which were delicious. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked, and the lemon chicken had such a bright, balanced flavor. The potatoes were a standout, roasted and finished in a lemon butter that made them unforgettable. If you haven't been in a while, or didn't realize there's been a change, it's definitely worth stopping in. Main Street businesses could really use the support, and this place is one that deserves it. Go say hi to Mo and give it a try.

Or a buffet that no longer buffets. But pizza is a big part of their menu and a lot of people order it. I can tell you, from sight alone... I wouldn't call it pizza. It's cheese, toppings, and an extremely flat crust that I can only imagine crunches to smithereens. So I went very much with not pizza. Fortunately, the menu goes many other directions. I got a hot chicken sandwich with Cajun fries, basically regular fries with a little seasoning sprinkled on (not baked in). Took a little while to get to us, but once it did, I was impressed with the spice level. This is not for the faint of tongue. The fries were perfectly cooked, but I would say just get plain fries if that's your vibe. I could have upgraded to onion rings or similar, wasn't feeling quite hungry enough for that venture. Verdict: I don't know. It's not a diner. It's not a pizzeria. Definitely seemed kid-friendly. I think my date liked this place more than I did. So again, I'll go with the balance and stick 4 stars on the wall. Could return, not sure what else in Flemington might attract (seems fairly restaurant-barren).

The food here is to-die for, and is certainly one of the best restaurants in the area. I have friends who visit from out of town who specifically request to go to Blue Fish during their stay! The prices are great for the quality of the food. I always opt for the build-your-own entree. This time, I chose the brisket with a side of the caramelized plantains, but I also often go with the chicken, steak, or salmon with the pesto butter. No matter what you order, you can't go wrong. The staff are very kind and the service is quick. The interior is modern and up-to-date, paralleled by its brick historic vibe exterior, as the Stangl Factory building was once a pottery/ceramic factory. Now, the building is home to Blue Fish Grill, as well as a number of other businesses including an artist-owned gallery, a large pottery studio, a medium, and a yoga and physical therapy studio. Stangl also hosts a weekly artisan farmers' market and bi-monthly live music and art events. It really is a growing creative community. Blue Fish Grill doesn't have a bar, but they do allow BYOB. If you find yourself in the Flemington area, be sure to grab a bite at Blue Fish! It will surely be a meal to remember.

The only items not made by in house are the peanut/peanut butter containing items (which are kept in a separate case). These items are sourced from Asher's Chocolate Co.
