Egg White Veggie Omelet with Home Fries and Whole Wheat Toast
    Alison C.

I had been going to Clinton since I was a child, but I had yet to dine at The Towne Restaurant, an upscale diner that had been around for 50 years. However, we were recently walking through the quaint village and were in need of a lunch spot when we came across the place. There were several tables outside, most of which were already taken, as well as a standard diner vibe inside (counter, booths, etc.). We were able to grab one of the sidewalk tables and settled in to browse through the lengthy breakfast and lunch options at our disposal. The reason I had referred to the restaurant as "upscale" was because they noted all of the local purveyors that were supplying their ingredients - bread from a bakery in Denville, eggs from a farm in Pennsylvania, etc. Between those footnotes and the friendly staff, the established venue obviously valued its patrons and wanted to provide the best possible experience. In the end, I settled on an Unsweetened Iced Tea and an Egg White Veggie Omelet. Iced tea could occasionally be watery, but not this one; it was bold, robust, and freshly brewed. The vegetable omelet was not runny or greasy and was cooked exactly to my liking. I could have added extra fillings to it, but I also wished that it, as it was, included more than just 3 ingredients: broccoli, roasted red peppers, and mushrooms. The eggs came with a generously-sized patty of home fries that was also cooked to perfection with a crunchy exterior. Lastly, the whole wheat toast was similarly enjoyable. The Towne Restaurant might be a diner, but it is not your average greasy spoon version; their customer service and food put them several steps above the rest!

    Green Eggs and Ham Sandwich

Located on the quaint main street of Clinton, this diner-themed restaurant is a perfect fit. We stopped in on a Saturday morning and there was plenty of seating available. We were seated in time to order from the breakfast menu, which closes at 11 am. They had plenty of the typical breakfast fare, with some creative specials. I opted for a classic eggs Benedict and regretted it. The only flavor that came through was the Canadian bacon. The hollandaise sauce moistened my potatoes but it was lacking in any flavor contribution. Thankfully my wife had a better experience with her green eggs and ham breakfast sandwich. The homemade pesto paired perfectly with the spinach and provolone. The ham was thinly sliced and the flavor came through nicely without overpowering the sandwich. An overall pleasant dining experience, but nothing too standout.

It is a small, busy restaurant in the heart of downtown Clinton, NJ. I was there on Sunday around 11:30 a.m., and the Waiting line was out the door. We were lucky that we decided to sit at the bar; there was no wait if you sat at the bar. The bar stool was comfortable as if it were in the old diner style. We got a traditional breakfast with eggs, pancakes/french toast, and sausage links. Service was top-notch. We were there for about an hour; the place kept getting customers non-stop. The food was good, but it took a while since it was a bustling restaurant. The service was good and very attentive. I would return. The Clinton town was also cute and had a unique vibe. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get away for a quick breakfast/lunch in a unique niche town.

This is the only option (and a great one) for diner style food in the heart of downtown Clinton. There's limited seating out front with booths, tables and counter service inside. On this visit, my son had a burger and fries. He said the burger was cooked to his liking and was very good. The fries came out hot and crispy but were lacking salt! I had the Greek Power Bowl and it was so much better than expected. The spinach was ever so slightly warmed and wilted with the warm quinoa and that made it perfect! Be sure to ask for extra homemade tzatziki sauce that comes with it because it is delicious. I was very happy with our waitress today and the cashiers/owners are always very pleasant. I'll be back soon to review some breakfast items.

    Mozzarella Sticks

A very standard NJ diner! I stopped by with my sister and cousin on a Saturday afternoon, and we were seated immediately at a table near the back. They also had outdoor seating out front, which is great for people watching. The ambiance was very casual and as far as diners go, I can't say this one was exceptionally charming - just regular. Our server was attentive and service was pretty quick overall. My sister and I ordered the Twisted Salmon (sandwich) and Mozzarella Sticks to share and my cousin got the Yeeros Sandwich with lamb and a Lemonade. The Mozzarella Sticks were very standard, but we liked the Twisted Salmon a lot - all the right ingredients in the right amounts. The Yeeros Sandwich was also pretty good, although the fries on the side were not the best. Pricing was extremely reasonable though, and we spent under $40 (before tip) as a group. Nothing special but not bad!

Good burger and sides. Particularly liked the onion rings. Nice, crispy bacon on the burger.

Very pleasantly surprised, given some of the reviews. Very nice diner-type restaurant. Right on main street in Clinton with a spacious and clean dining room. Standard diner menu with a vast array of foods. We got a chipotle chicken sandwich which had nice, juicy grilled chicken, a generous amount of cheese, crispy bacon, and a dollop of chipotle mayo. Emphasis on the crispy bacon, which many places miss the mark on. Also got a burger, which was a bit overdone but that is the price to pay for ordering it medium. The fries were very good although they had a unique property of the salt not adhering to them somehow. Oh well, just salted the ketchup. The onion rings were thick yet and crispy and cooked all the way through. My one complaint is the ketchup bottles looked really, really old which leads me to believe they've been married (refilled) a ton of times. Just a bit off-putting. But, all-in-all, a very good experience and will definitely go back.

Had a rough morning, my lovely friend took me for some breakfast and we definitely picked the right place. We both got the 2x2 which is your choice of pancakes or french toast, sausage bacon or ham, and your choice of two eggs. Toppings are an additional fee, i added some bananas. Everything was cooked perfectly, my scrambled eggs were nice and fluffy and the french toast was delightfully cinnamon-y. Our waitress was very lovely and had a beautiful smile, checked up on us often but not in an annoying way. The place was very cute I loved the maple leaf syrup bottle as well as the little container for the creamer. Perfect place for a little brunch and a good chat. Also reasonably priced!

Due to circumstances beyond my control, we arrived at noon on Thursday, breakfast ended at 11am and so we pivoted to lunch items that included a Boars Head cheesesteak, chips and pickle plus a really tasty cheeseburger . As we were leaving, my husband decided on a large chocolate peanut butter milkshake which he deemed awesome. (Thanks Todd for stepping in and making one) We stopped at our pre planned list of farm stands and headed home. Very next day, Friday, up at dawn to get a few chores out of the way so we could head out to Gronsky's for the day #2 breakfast deadline! I prefer sitting at the counter and watching their magician, Tyler, assemble the food for orders, crack open the eggs, drop the pancake batter in the proper corner and keep all meats aligned for the plates. He's the king of that kitchen and each one of those servers is the queen doing the hustle, bustle, slide to the left, back up and move forward like square dancers on the move. From the Taylor ham, provolone and fried egg sandwich on that FRESH Kaiser roll to the omelette with those delicious home fries and my PEACH PANCAKE . . . . all of it was their special take on breakfast served their way. Almost 50 years, folks! Prices are absolutely reasonable for how the food is prepared and presented, quality ingredients cooked according to diners' specifications. What more can you ask for? It is a fairly large space with plenty of seating and a bar and felt spacious and clean. Our server Fernanda was very friendly and checked in with us regularly to see how we were enjoying the food as it came out. I started with the duck salad and had the sauerbraten for my entree. The duck salad was tasty with a nice dressing, my only complaint is that it came with 4 thin slices of duck (maybe a bite each). It definitely could have benefited from more duck, especially for a $23 salad. That said, I liked the blue cheese, apples, and cranberries that went with it. My entree was definitely the largest of the group and came with two huge thick potato pancakes, a hefty serving of red cabbage and a good portion of beef. I really enjoyed the dish and was pretty full afterwards. I would absolutely recommend this dish and eat it again. For dessert we tried their special, a mango cake which was very light and pleasant albeit a bit sweet. I would suggest checking/asking about portion sizes before you order as some dishes are smaller than others (the grilled shrimp appetizer is only 4 shrimp, the clams casino is 5 small/medium clams and the crab cake entree is two small to medium sized crab cakes with no sides). So I can see how some people are frustrated with the portions based on the prices. That being said, I would absolutely recommend both the duck salad and sauerbraten.

We live in Clinton Twp and The Clinton House was top of the list to visit. Appetizers: crab cake and portobello fries. Crab cake was excellent, all crab, no filler, loved the sauce. Portobello fries were fine, a little dry, but good sauce. Entrees: My husband got the French dip sandwich which I tried..it was okay. Definitely not bad but nothing special. Where the food really fell short was my entree. I got the shrimp and scallop risotto special. It came with two shrimp and "four" scallops, which was two scallops cut horizontally prior to cooking and seared. Scallops were complete rubber and tasted like ammonia, and the shrimp were extremely overcooked. The risotto itself was tasty and I would have it again, but for $40 it was not an acceptable dish. Our waitress was not rude, but not particularly friendly. We loved the vibe and decor of the restaurant, and other staff we interacted with were pleasant. I would not return here based on food quality and price point. I think the establishment is historic and beautiful, but could be improved greatly.

Turns out that CB has not fully undone the rebranding. You will see places where the logo no longer has an old man by the barrel. The triangle games at the tables no longer say "Four or more you're just plain ig-no-ra-moose." I miss that. They went PC. More importantly, a couple of things here I never encountered previously: someone to greet us as we walked in, the ability to pay from your table instead of up front, and a completely revamped menu. So, the menu has a lot of new dishes, a section with the old favorites - both for the mains and the sides - but I definitely did not have the comfort level here that I'm used to at a CB. Food? I'd say we're still where CB has always been. No change to my fried okra. They accidentally brought a second mac & cheese, let us keep it. They brought cornbread and biscuits while we waited (I asked), and then another bowl with the meal - let us keep it. Very nice! Cornbread still as addictive as ever, biscuits nice and soft. The mac is OK, maybe better if you upgrade with the bacon bits. My third side - I went up for onion petals, and those are mostly breading. Skip those, even if the dip was nice. Get the dip with something else. Too full for dessert, though they have ones I remember and new ones as I figured. The special seasonal lemonade - I think it was strawberry peach limeade - was interesting, the lime threw things a bit but I appreciated the "different" flavor and there was totally puree in there, strawberry seeds I could taste. That was . Verdict: Some things never change. Some things change. But the Barrel's still Crackin' to meet you.
