We came for dinner and had a nice meal. The place is historic, but they do a good job of not making it feel worn. It is a fairly large space with plenty of seating and a bar and felt spacious and clean. Our server Fernanda was very friendly and checked in with us regularly to see how we were enjoying the food as it came out. I started with the duck salad and had the sauerbraten for my entree. The duck salad was tasty with a nice dressing, my only complaint is that it came with 4 thin slices of duck (maybe a bite each). It definitely could have benefited from more duck, especially for a $23 salad. That said, I liked the blue cheese, apples, and cranberries that went with it. My entree was definitely the largest of the group and came with two huge thick potato pancakes, a hefty serving of red cabbage and a good portion of beef. I really enjoyed the dish and was pretty full afterwards. I would absolutely recommend this dish and eat it again. For dessert we tried their special, a mango cake which was very light and pleasant albeit a bit sweet. I would suggest checking/asking about portion sizes before you order as some dishes are smaller than others (the grilled shrimp appetizer is only 4 shrimp, the clams casino is 5 small/medium clams and the crab cake entree is two small to medium sized crab cakes with no sides). So I can see how some people are frustrated with the portions based on the prices. That being said, I would absolutely recommend both the duck salad and sauerbraten. read more

Not terrible, but not great. We moved to Hunterdon county about a year ago and are finally getting out to explore the food scene. We live in Clinton Twp and The Clinton House was top of the list to visit. Appetizers: crab cake and portobello fries. Crab cake was excellent, all crab, no filler, loved the sauce. Portobello fries were fine, a little dry, but good sauce. Entrees: My husband got the French dip sandwich which I tried..it was okay. Definitely not bad but nothing special. Where the food really fell short was my entree. I got the shrimp and scallop risotto special. It came with two shrimp and "four" scallops, which was two scallops cut horizontally prior to cooking and seared. Scallops were complete rubber and tasted like ammonia, and the shrimp were extremely overcooked. The risotto itself was tasty and I would have it again, but for $40 it was not an acceptable dish. Our waitress was not rude, but not particularly friendly. We loved the vibe and decor of the restaurant, and other staff we interacted with were pleasant. I would not return here based on food quality and price point. I think the establishment is historic and beautiful, but could be improved greatly. read more

Needs work. I think they live on past glory. Food was ok, service was ok. Nothing great

Sitting next to the cozy lit fireplace I enjoyed one of the best dinners here. The South African twin lobster tails were incredible. The bone-in ribeye was cooked perfectly. The beet salad was fresh and the potato pancakes were crispy and hot. The carrot cake to finish was also great. Our server checked on us frequently. Though dinner was pricey I would absolutely return for the experience. read more

First timer, restaurant was surprisingly welcoming and cozy. There were a few other people at tables. We saw couples at the far end of the bar. We decided to sit at the bar. As our original thoughts were to have an appetizer each. The bartender/ server was very friendly and suggested a few items. As we reviewed the menu, it was a great surprise to see a few of our favorites traditional dishes that we can't find anymore. We decided to order two appetizers each and dinner plate as we shared everything. It exceeded our expectations. We look forward to returning in the near future. Definitely make it a point to stop in you would be disappointed. read more

Very good food, great portion ratio, friendly staff. Nice place to have breakfast lunch or dinner.

NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE! Clinton House used to be 5-star all around before the original owners retired and new management and owners took over. Now, their prices are exorbitant for the quality and quantity of food they serve now. My husband and I have no problem paying a lot of money for 5 star dining experience, BUT Clinton House has fallen to 2 stars in our book. MEDIOCRE to slightly below all the way around.. NOT worth the money anymore. read more

Great atmosphere and service. Loved the stained glass and brick walls. Service was very good, it seemed like there was only one waiter, but he was very on top of everything! Hugo spritz was delicious, mexican mule was not very strong. The steak frites and tuna ratatouille were the best dishes of the night. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the garlic butter was amazing. The chicken & asparagus dish was so so. Chicken was a little thick for our liking, and it only came with 3 pieces of asparagus. read more

Do not come here for fine dining. If you like overpriced hamburgers it's a good place. I took my family here and ordered a rack of lamb for a hefty price and they gave me appetizers basically. After polite mention they showed no concern at all and told me three small lamb sticks was a rack. They have great ambiance but it's a shame their menu is untrustworthy and misleading and their service is diner level. read more

Still the best restaurant in Hunterdon County. Food & service is always stellar. It's a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful town & staff always goes out of their way for us read more

What a Great experience. The building, the history, the service and the food were all really good. We basically tripped over this restaurant while exploring the area. From the outside, I had a feeling that I was going to like it. The atmosphere and decor resemble a time hundreds of years ago. Everyone working at Clinton House was super friendly and helpful. The food was very good. We started with the French Onion soup and the Lobster bisque and enjoyed them both. Our entree's consisted of Seafood Newburgh and the Crab cake dinner. I also got a side of potato pancakes. Both were very good. The Newburgh had a flaky pastry crust that was fantastic. My crab cakes were a little smallish but tasted great. Basically all crab. My potato pancakes were awesome. They have a wonderful selection of wines and a good group of craft beers. All in all, a really great experience. I will have to say that it's slightly higher priced than I expected but I'm sure the cost of operating in North Jersey is more than I would expect also. We would definitely return. Also, the area nearby is beautiful. A wonderful experience to add to a great meal. read more

I was so happy to see that the Clinton House has finally become a great place to dine again. After COVID we stopped going because it had become a place we did not enjoy any longer Christmas 2025 we went with family to celebrate. It was wonderful. Everyone enjoyed the food, the service and the beautiful ambiance. Definitely will be back for our special dates read more

Ambience and service were superb! Absolutely beautiful inside. We had a party of nine on 4 -16-26 to celebrate my granddaughter's fifth birthday. The food was mediocre and overpriced. (We went a year ago on her fourth birthday and I remember the food being much better. ) We walked in at 6:30 PM and the place was empty. Unusual for a Thursday night. My daughter and I thought the French dip was awful. I filled up on my granddaughter's french fries which were very good. My son-in-law thought the crab cakes were just OK. I got a side order of mashed potatoes, which were good. Not perfect but good. Everyone said the butter was highly salted, and it was almost inedible. We had a wonderful waitress, and she was constantly asking if we needed anything, but that could've been because the place was empty except for our table. My daughter and I both said we are never going there again. Not worth the money. read more

Every year we come for the Dickens event and always eat here first. That tradition is over. Almost empty dining room, seated next to the only other tables (older diners). My young son was upset and hungry after losing his toy. We waited over 15 minutes -- no greeting, no water, no server. Finally someone came over, not to help, but to tell me to remove my child because another table complained. We left immediately and went to Dora down the street -- greeted warmly, drinks in 2 minutes, great service. The disrespect was shocking. As a human-services professional, I'm appalled at how fast they escalated to kicking out a family instead of simply serving us. Management needs to retrain staff on basic decency and anti-discrimination. We won't be back, and neither will anyone we know who attends Dickens. Shame on you. read more

The Clinton House Inn is a big beautiful restaurant at the heart of Clinton, NJ. It is only a few steps away from the historic Red Mill, which features a museum and is located on the South Branch of the Raritan River with a waterfall. The Clinton House is charming for it's rustic, European decor but can considered a bit dark overall. Many dining rooms are featured, some with window views out to Main Street Clinton. The food and service is consistently good. The negatives are parking can be tight and overall cost can be high, hence the 3 stars. It is worth a visit if you've never been and the Currier and Ives town of Clinton is a great walk after diner! read more

Food was good. Drink was watered down Not the first time we had this bartender. There was literally no one else at the bar and only one other table of two. She was cold, unfriendly, and not at all service oriented. After we signed our bill leaving her a good tip inspite of her attitude she never said thank you. Just took the charge/paperwork and walked away. This was at least or 5th time here, 2nd time with this woman. We give up. We went out of our way to be courteous. Nothing helped. read more

Nice setting and good food, good service! Not historic interior like I expected but it was pleasant. A long time favorite. Appitizers are all very good. Filet Mignon, sauerbraten and Beef Wellington are on the top of my entree highly recommended selections. Desserts are also very good. Excellent bar and ambiance add to the food selection. read more

This restaurant was always our favorite till the son took over and ran it into the ground. It is very expensive and the food is so so. The drinks are cheaply made and the glass is always half full. We do not recommend this restaurant/bar. It is basically an overly glorified Diner with NYC prices. We miss the father. He did a great job for a very long time. read more

I was at the Clinton for lunch yesterday. I will admit to being taken aback after ordering mussels as an appetizer. It was suggested I order a baguette to accompany the mussels. I always order mussels if they are available but crusty bread has always come with them. It was very disappointing to be asked to pay for that in an upscale and pricy restaurant. The food was delicious, wait staff delightful and ambiance lovely. Charging for bread, just not nice. Showed a lack of class for the status of the restaurant. read more

Right from the start, there was no host at the front desk. Waited for several minutes as other wait staff walked by without even asking us if we had been helped yet. Eventually, the bartender came over and stated that she had no idea where the hostess had gone. Waited a few more minutes and were finally seated at our table, by the very nice bartender. Hostess was MIA. After another lengthy waiting period we were told our server would be over eventually, which finally happened. Upon taking the initial drink order, the waitress thej left without offering if we would like bread. It was after looking at the menu that I realized you had to pay for bread and butter, which is ridiculous. Any other high-end restaurant, including Ruth's Chris steakhouse and many other classy establishments, always brings this over, just a normal thing for a full service restaurant. The menu was very limited and when the food finally came out, it was not of the quality that I would expect to pay $60 for a very small seafood bake. Three scallops and two shrimp in the whole entree. I've never seen anything lack in quality this badly that is this high priced. Extremely overpriced for the quality and quantity of the food, and very slow. $20 for kids menu mac n cheese? $12 shirley temple? My old fashioned was good, but overpriced. That was about the highlight of the meal. I havev had more attentive waiter staff at a basic diner. Would not go again. read more

The Clinton House has been a local favorite for almost 300 years. The quality of everything is top notch and better than most of what is available in the rest of New Jersey. I cannot recommend this place enough to anyone in the area. read more

What a huge disappointment the food was. For years this place has been consistently good, but the last few it seems to get worse. They painted the back room white, which for a historical building is not keeping with the age of the building. It's too bad read more

Checked in with hostess who put our name on the list for the 30 minute wait for our table. Received a text indicating that our table was ready just around the 30 minute mark. Hostess tells us our table is not ready and walks away without any type of explanation. Not a good way to start a dining experience. Waited another 20-30 minutes and the manager corrected the issue and got us a table. Once seated we were informed that 5-6 menu items were not available. No big deal, I'm sure we can find something. Wine we ordered, nope ran out. Side dishes we ordered, nope just ran out.....another not so great start here Clinton House. Oh it gets better. App's show up, no silverware. Have to hunt someone down to get some. Again not a big deal. Just finishing app's and server spills entire tray of food onto our table. It was for the table adjacent to ours. Dishes that didn't spill were served to that table. All of their food should have been remade. Luckily nothing on our table spilled on us. We did have to request for our table to be cleaned from the shrapnel of food and toppings that were left from the plates that spilled on our table. I understand that things happen but it's how you react when they do. Having to ask to have our table cleaned, finding new silverware, getting taken off the wait list by a mistake and just walking away, serving dishes that landed on others tables, lots and lots wrong here. I will say the food was good (what we could order), the manager was good and took care of our bill. If you are going to run a higher end restaurant and charge the prices you do, the service needs to be worth it and unfortunately it is not. read more

Given all the excellent restaurants within a 5 to 10 mile radius of Clinton the Clinton house is a terrible value. The former owner, the current owner's father, presented a wonderful meal at a fair price and was on premise all the time. His son spends most of his time at another restaurant he owns and it shows. This restaurant has been a fixture in Clinton for over 100 years, but that does not justify patronizing it under the current ownership. read more

Wonderful ambiance with fireplace and neatly organized tables. Servers are very courteous and polite. Food is exceptional. Appetizers: - We tried the portobello fries - must try you won't know it's not potatoes but mushrooms!! Crispy and delicious! - Oysters Mains: - Red snapper: a little dense like consistency of the fish fillet - it came on a bed of salad and tomatoes. I would like it more with some rice pilaf or risotto/ red potatoes. Salad can be a side with a starch. It will make the plate complete and more popular! -Cod: very delicious delicate fish down just perfectly right! With small risotto pilaf. Dessert: We shared a Berry pie: nice warm and delicious made with fresh berries compote and pastry. Wine: 2003 bottle of wine. They had tasting available for us to try before we bought the bottle for $120. Over all we always come here to celebrate and even for a nice warm cozy dinner next to a fireplace! read more

We had the crab cocktail and loaf of bread for appetizers. A must to start the meal. Sea food Newburgh and Sauerbraten we're our entrees, both outstanding. I dont Normally go to CH because it's very expensive for mediocre food but I had a gift card. as a result I ordered an expensive steak dish, $65! The order came out cold and I had to send it back! Omg. GET THE HOUSE DRESSING. I would pay $20 for their side salad with the house dressing. First of all, the lettuces and veggies on the salad come out crisp and cold, yum. And the famous dressing tastes like a mixture of yellow French dressing and with blue cheese crumbles in it. Just try it, sounds weird but it's a symphony in your mouth. Service is impeccable. Ridiculous really. I asked for a Tito's martini dirty and up with blue cheese olives a few weeks ago. The waitress didn't snarl or say we don't have those olives, she says - never heard of that but I'm sure since we have blue cheese, I can make that happen for you! How accommodating :) The two bartenders are favorites of my parents (been coming here for 30 years). They're married I believe and are just so sweet and very experienced behind the bar in their craft. The bar always has good quality chips too. Like the horseradish cheddar chips. Not like plain lays and stale pretzels. Quality flavored chips and bar snacks- always! The Clinton House is such a cute date spot, although on the very pricey side, you get quality and that's ay-ok with me. What a staple in our community. But since it's located next to a very famous Teri-state wide historical building, a lot of out of towners don't know the Clinton House exists. Which is kind of like money left on the table. My father has his annual company Christmas party here every year and one year my ex boyfriend came and ordered their gigantic Blue Ribbon Steak. It's like $80 or something insane but it was literally like the size of my dog. So tender, so creative, so fun and had the whole table laughing and chatting about it! Warning, it gets very busy on random days. Lots of regulars at the bar. They have a coat check which is wonderful and I love to come in the winter when they have the fireplace lit in the back :-) read more
