I discovered Cree after googling wine tasting places earlier this year. I didn't actually get a chance to go until the 4th of July weekend when my girl and I were debating what to do for the day. We made the trek out to our northwest. It's in a fairly unassuming spot right off 78. It's mainly known for truckers taking a short break before heading to PA or to the ports in Newark. The Union Township elementary school is just south of it. But hearing about Chris Cree and being one of 57 Wine Masters gave me a reason to swing on by. First off, the place looks magnificent. Great job with the renovations. The inside looks amazing with the lounge style seating near the fireplace and the huge dining room area. The bar looks swanky and apparently there's a second floor too! I didn't venture up. We decided to enjoy outside which seems to be the perfect spot to be in during the fall. There's even a gazebo where you can take a couple nice photos together enjoying your wine. We just ordered flights this time. One Spain & Portugal flight (red wine) and the other was a rose flight. They were pretty good. I skipped the food, but good knowing that it's there. This is a fun place to come hang out for a couple hours. read more

This location is great to sit outside enjoying a sunny day with your favorite wine or cocktail. The staff is friendly and attentive. The wine selection is amazing, with wines you've never heard and didn't know you liked. Similarly, the cocktails are fantastic, well balanced and delicious. I visited Cree Wine Company for a fun mid-week night out and to catch Bob Wylde perform. The space was quite lovely, creating an open yet intimate vibe. All the staff were very welcoming and beyond helpful when it came to making suggestions for what we may like to try. There's something for everyone, but my group opted for individual flights while we shared cheese and meat boards. With wonderful jazz music drifting throughout the room, we lazily enjoyed our wine and food. Their food menu is small, but every dish comes with a recommendation of a wine that would pair well with it. I was super excited to learn that NJ's only master of wine was investing in my town and renovating a historic building for a restaurant concept that isn't found in these parts. The concept is a wine bar where you can sample their entire wine & spirit list in 3 or 6oz pours. Everything they offer is also available by the bottle for retail purchase to take home. The bulk of the list is found online using the QR code. It's a very comfy yet elegant "try before you buy" experience. They also have a few bites to nibble on while you're there but not a full or traditional menu. It's like tapas. It's very heavy on the vegetables. We tried and loved the hummus. The edamame had great flavors. The Korean fried chicken was underwhelming. The boneless pieces of chicken were light and crispy but I was expecting a sauce. Gochujang & scallions were mentioned on the menu but I couldn't detect them. I even asked the waitress and she wasn't sure either. We just left it at that! The coleslaw on top didn't seem special at all and I could have done without it. The charcuterie board was very small and uninspired. We selected 2 cheeses and a meat for our board and the cheeses were approx 1.5" x 1.5" in size. My husband could have popped each piece into his mouth in one bite. The olives were already pitted and seemed like they were out of a can. We each got a flight of red wines. I can't remember which flights and honestly, they all end up tasting the same after the first 2 sips. Next time, I'll just order a wine that I think I'd like to try and see if I enjoy it rather than choosing a flight. The renovations and finishes were very tastefully done. The place feels very cozy, especially in the room with the fireplace. Heads up: A lot of their seating is lounge chairs with lower tables so there's a lot of leaning over for your food. I do wish they installed retractable glass doors rather than the curtain they have hanging to separate the private event space. I'm eager to come back and give it another try. Cree Wine is an amazing place, to enjoy the depth of wine knowledge available at Cree would otherwise require a trip to Manhattan. The focus here is wine, if you do not enjoy wines, if their yearly variations in scents, intensity and depth of tastes does not fascinate you, you can have a good meal here, but you are missing the point. Despite that focus Cree does its best not to be off putting to a novice wine drinker. Instead, it encourages them with inexpensive (for the value) flights and dozens of wines available as small tastes. There is no need to commit to a whole bottle, though if you do Cree Wine is the fairest priced restaurant you will find. They charge only NJ retail price plus a $35 service fee, even for wines costing hundreds of dollars which normal restaurants routinely double or triple in price. The food while not the focus, is well prepared and intended to enhance rather than compete with enjoying the plethora of wine options. They have 3 plate sizes 1,2 & 3, intended to be like a usual starter, share plate and entree. My guest and I shared the seasonal cheese special Vacherin Mont d'Or, a taste you would otherwise need to travel to Switzerland to have. The whole cheese was warmed until its gooey unctuousness was at its peak, and served with duck fat fried fingerling potatoes, little toast, cornichons and a small bit of endive salad. We paired this with a glass of the recommended French white wine, then went on to try flights of three chardonnays and a trio of Rhone wines. Undaunted by the cheese we added an order of sourdough bread accompanied by a wonderful sea-salted butter, a scallops plate and a duck confit plate to share. All were delicious and paired very well with the wines. On a negative note, the restaurant was quite busy and very loud. We were seated at a high-top table even though I had requested a normal table in my reservation. Our waitress was very helpful, but extremely busy. It took a long time to order and to get our food. We will be back soon, perhaps on a slower night. read more

The wine and service is an absolute 5! Our server Jessica was as attentive as we needed and completely facilitated our satisfaction. Food is somewhat less and I have comments. The roasted poblano is a 5+ and super delicious! Carpaccio was perfectly sliced but had too much oil on top. That took away from the beef, even though the olive oil was delicious! It was just too much. Pate was delicious Game charcuterie board showed a nice selection but the duck was super oily. Bison and boar were good but the venison was spectacular! We had so much fun. It would be better if Chris Cree could expand his tapas offerings a bit more. We enjoyed small plates and dinner and enjoyed the very cool and generous Wine Wednesday program offered, which offers all bottles for purchase without a corkage or restaurant mark-up....a huge savings. And Chris' collection is known far and wide for being interesting and expansive. Tom, who was on board for the wine program during our visit, is wonderful...fun, professional and knowledgable. Our small plates were delicious, edamame, burrata, and shishito peppers...each dish beautiful and fantastic. We then moved on to our meals....hamburger, crispy chicken and two of us enjoyed the scallops. A+++. The space is very attractive, with different rooms offering differing vibes. What a great space! They offer classes, special wine dinners, tastings, flights and private events. The chef was unwilling to make the tasting menu for him, because all members of the party must have the tasting menu or no one can get it. Im very local. Finally made it in here and the star selection is aligned w the objective. This is an unusual concept- a tasting room, rather than a restaurant. If we keep within that concept, and understand it, it's a very refined example. The historic inn underwent an ambitious contemporary renovation at a significant investment. It was strong stylistic choice (across the board here) and I think it works, the rooms are comfortable and beautiful, lots of drywall, almost nothing left of the historic finishes- and/but, beautiful. Really fantastic art. The table experience, flatware and serving ware is very high end. That is unusual and I noticed and appreciated that. The food. Excellent. Yes the menu is limited but not so limited- that confused me, at first. Chris stopped by and explained why, they didn't want to call themselves a restaraunt- I can understand why. Need to start and develop around a chef and a strong food concept. Plus, the business is a killer (my words). Here the wine (and spirits) predominate. That said, the small plates I tried were very good. The salmon tartare w fresh peas was very, very good as was the fried rainbow cauliflower. The carpaccio was excellent!! Very excited I can have this here. Yay. Yay. Yay. My only feedback to the excellent young chef, it seems he may finishing these small plates with a larger grain sea or kosher salt (?) hard to find a non iodized fine grain, I know- these plates do not even need salt (imo) but if he's going to finish- perhaps use a finer grain or lighter toss so it's not uneven- giving the impression of a tad too salty. may just be me? The Wait staff, all women in their 20/30s, smart, knowledgeable and super friendly. excellent. Lastly, the wine- I had a chardonnay flight, and 2/3 of the wines were not oaked. I love (the) oaked, but I know that my wine palette needs to grow, and if anyone can teach me it's this local master of wine. This place is an ambitious labor of love and delivers. BEWARE Beware of wine recommendations without verifying the pricing!!! We stopped in for a glass of wine on way to party and to pick up a several cases of wine that we ordered after attending a wine tasting. When we sat down the owner recommended a new wine that just came in and said it was on special for $99 per bottle.... for the weekend only .... then changing to about $139 per bottle. We decided to try a small glass and then ordered several bottles to take home with our cases we were picking up. When we got the bill for our 2 glasses of wine, we were shocked! The wine that the owner suggested we try was $59 for barely 6 oz glass ! $59 per glass!!! I completely understand the mark up on wine but this is Ridiculous! We double checked with bartender and she said that was unusual compared to other wines by the glass on their menu but correct and she had nothing to do with pricing. We have reached out via phone calls and email to owner thinking we may have accidentally been charged their bottle wholesale price since it was brand new. No response from anyone -- even if to just say the bill was correct. poor customer service / follow up. read more

Headed to the Metropolitan Seafood pop up at the Cree Wine Company this Sunday and had a wonderful time. It's a credential that means something, and also means he has a phenomenal hand selection of wines by the glass you won't find anywhere else. We've been to Cree Wine Company a few times since they've opened and every time I leave saying that something I've had is the best I've ever tasted - case in point: the steak and their ice cream! If you just want good wine, this is the place. They are definitely pricey though. The food is just mediocre and expensive. We have no problem spending money for good food. There's just no creativity in anything they do. Charcuterie plate was mediocre. Jarred olives and stale fruit and nut mix. Add a little orange peel and olive oil to the olives. Use good nuts toasted with herbs. You're charging alot! Use a better grade of chicken in the Sicilian chicken. Learn how to cook octopus if you are going to serve it.
