Green Eggs and Ham Sandwich
Joseph F.

Located on the quaint main street of Clinton, this diner-themed restaurant is a perfect fit. We stopped in on a Saturday morning and there was plenty of seating available. We were seated in time to order from the breakfast menu, which closes at 11 am. They had plenty of the typical breakfast fare, with some creative specials. I opted for a classic eggs Benedict and regretted it. The only flavor that came through was the Canadian bacon. The hollandaise sauce moistened my potatoes but it was lacking in any flavor contribution. Thankfully my wife had a better experience with her green eggs and ham breakfast sandwich. The homemade pesto paired perfectly with the spinach and provolone. The ham was thinly sliced and the flavor came through nicely without overpowering the sandwich. An overall pleasant dining experience, but nothing too standout.

It is a small, busy restaurant in the heart of downtown Clinton, NJ. I was there on Sunday around 11:30 a.m., and the Waiting line was out the door. We were lucky that we decided to sit at the bar; there was no wait if you sat at the bar. The bar stool was comfortable as if it were in the old diner style. We got a traditional breakfast with eggs, pancakes/french toast, and sausage links. Service was top-notch. We were there for about an hour; the place kept getting customers non-stop. The food was good, but it took a while since it was a bustling restaurant. The service was good and very attentive. I would return. The Clinton town was also cute and had a unique vibe. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get away for a quick breakfast/lunch in a unique niche town.

This is the only option (and a great one) for diner style food in the heart of downtown Clinton. There's limited seating out front with booths, tables and counter service inside. On this visit, my son had a burger and fries. He said the burger was cooked to his liking and was very good. The fries came out hot and crispy but were lacking salt! I had the Greek Power Bowl and it was so much better than expected. The spinach was ever so slightly warmed and wilted with the warm quinoa and that made it perfect! Be sure to ask for extra homemade tzatziki sauce that comes with it because it is delicious. I was very happy with our waitress today and the cashiers/owners are always very pleasant. I'll be back soon to review some breakfast items.

Good burger and sides. Particularly liked the onion rings. Nice, crispy bacon on the burger.

Very pleasantly surprised, given some of the reviews. Very nice diner-type restaurant. Right on main street in Clinton with a spacious and clean dining room. Standard diner menu with a vast array of foods. We got a chipotle chicken sandwich which had nice, juicy grilled chicken, a generous amount of cheese, crispy bacon, and a dollop of chipotle mayo. Emphasis on the crispy bacon, which many places miss the mark on. Also got a burger, which was a bit overdone but that is the price to pay for ordering it medium. The fries were very good although they had a unique property of the salt not adhering to them somehow. Oh well, just salted the ketchup. The onion rings were thick yet and crispy and cooked all the way through. My one complaint is the ketchup bottles looked really, really old which leads me to believe they've been married (refilled) a ton of times. Just a bit off-putting. But, all-in-all, a very good experience and will definitely go back.

Mozzarella Sticks

A very standard NJ diner! I stopped by with my sister and cousin on a Saturday afternoon, and we were seated immediately at a table near the back. They also had outdoor seating out front, which is great for people watching. The ambiance was very casual and as far as diners go, I can't say this one was exceptionally charming - just regular. Our server was attentive and service was pretty quick overall. My sister and I ordered the Twisted Salmon (sandwich) and Mozzarella Sticks to share and my cousin got the Yeeros Sandwich with lamb and a Lemonade. The Mozzarella Sticks were very standard, but we liked the Twisted Salmon a lot - all the right ingredients in the right amounts. The Yeeros Sandwich was also pretty good, although the fries on the side were not the best. Pricing was extremely reasonable though, and we spent under $40 (before tip) as a group. Nothing special but not bad!

Had a rough morning, my lovely friend took me for some breakfast and we definitely picked the right place. We both got the 2x2 which is your choice of pancakes or french toast, sausage bacon or ham, and your choice of two eggs. Toppings are an additional fee, i added some bananas. Everything was cooked perfectly, my scrambled eggs were nice and fluffy and the french toast was delightfully cinnamon-y. Our waitress was very lovely and had a beautiful smile, checked up on us often but not in an annoying way. The place was very cute I loved the maple leaf syrup bottle as well as the little container for the creamer. Perfect place for a little brunch and a good chat. Also reasonably priced!

The past few times we came over the past few years it seemed "off", but this time...I'm just sad. But before I get into the food thing, I want to address the service. We had to wait a few minutes for someone to wait on us at the bar since no one was attending it, but once they knew we were there, they checked on us, and it was good. So please don't get upset, it just may take someone a minute to see you there. The table service was impeccable, seriously wonderful table service...he didn't miss a beat. Now for the food: I suppose it depends on what you order, or maybe it's hit or miss these days? My Pastrami Reuben had super thick slices that were tough, making it hard to chew, and had no flavor. Members of my party had a chicken BLT and a burger, and both were ok flavor-wise, but very dry, making them hard to get through. Just taking a little bite of their sandwiches was enough for me. However, another member had flatbread, and it was fine. Fries were served cold and had zero flavor. We've had the same flavorless and tough food experiences the past few times we have eaten here over the past few years. The presentation is good, but once it hits the lips, mouth, and teeth, you get the real story. The beer is always cold though! The prices are fair, and the atmosphere is unique, although the toy train near the ceiling doesn't seem to be working anymore. Although I didn't get dessert this time, the desserts are normally good. There is more than ample parking, and depending on how you drive here, it can be a little tricky getting to. Follow the GPS if you aren't from around here. This diner is supposed to be the best 24-hour diner, and I'm not sure why. Again, service was wonderful, but if the food isn't always good or flavorful, then why? And for me as a customer, presentation is nice, but I care about the flavor and texture, otherwise...why bother?

It was very salty, no beans, no tomatoes. My Party Melt, always a hit, was cooked to perfection alongside the fresh-cut, homemade fries. We live in Clinton Twp and The Clinton House was top of the list to visit. Appetizers: crab cake and portobello fries. Crab cake was excellent, all crab, no filler, loved the sauce. Portobello fries were fine, a little dry, but good sauce. Entrees: My husband got the French dip sandwich which I tried..it was okay. Definitely not bad but nothing special. Where the food really fell short was my entree. I got the shrimp and scallop risotto special. It came with two shrimp and "four" scallops, which was two scallops cut horizontally prior to cooking and seared. Scallops were complete rubber and tasted like ammonia, and the shrimp were extremely overcooked. The risotto itself was tasty and I would have it again, but for $40 it was not an acceptable dish. Our waitress was not rude, but not particularly friendly. We loved the vibe and decor of the restaurant, and other staff we interacted with were pleasant. I would not return here based on food quality and price point. I think the establishment is historic and beautiful, but could be improved greatly.

Very disappointing experience…read more A friend of mine ordered the steak and shrimp entrée and asked for his steak medium rare, but it came out well done. The shrimp didn't even arrive with the meal. On top of that, it took over 35 minutes for our food to come out, which is unacceptable. We had to ask twice about the missing shrimp before anything was done. When we finally asked to speak to a manager, our server, Danielle B., rushed off and came back with the shrimp wrapped to-go. It was pretty clear that once the word "manager" was mentioned, she hurried to grab the shrimp instead of actually getting a manager. No manager ever came to the table, and there was no attempt to make the situation right. To make things worse, when we got back to our office across the street and opened the container, the shrimp we were given to-go was ice cold. Slow service, an incorrect order, missing items, and poor handling of the situation. Not a good experience.

Point: I have loved Cracker Barrel for generations, since we first discovered them in the South in…read morethe early '90s. Counterpoint: The recent rebranding attempt. Turns out that CB has not fully undone the rebranding. You will see places where the logo no longer has an old man by the barrel. The triangle games at the tables no longer say "Four or more you're just plain ig-no-ra-moose." I miss that. They went PC. More importantly, a couple of things here I never encountered previously: someone to greet us as we walked in, the ability to pay from your table instead of up front, and a completely revamped menu. So, the menu has a lot of new dishes, a section with the old favorites - both for the mains and the sides - but I definitely did not have the comfort level here that I'm used to at a CB. Food? I'd say we're still where CB has always been. No change to my fried okra. They accidentally brought a second mac & cheese, let us keep it. They brought cornbread and biscuits while we waited (I asked), and then another bowl with the meal - let us keep it. Very nice! Cornbread still as addictive as ever, biscuits nice and soft. The mac is OK, maybe better if you upgrade with the bacon bits. My third side - I went up for onion petals, and those are mostly breading. Skip those, even if the dip was nice. Get the dip with something else. Too full for dessert, though they have ones I remember and new ones as I figured. The special seasonal lemonade - I think it was strawberry peach limeade - was interesting, the lime threw things a bit but I appreciated the "different" flavor and there was totally puree in there, strawberry seeds I could taste. That was . Verdict: Some things never change. Some things change. But the Barrel's still Crackin' to meet you.

Although I'd love trying new and unique cocktails at different establishments, I was in the mood for something light and refreshing and nonalcoholic. This hit just a spot. For food, we started off with the margherita pizza to share. Then, I opted for the crispy, buttermilk chicken sandwich with malt vinegar, potato wedges/fries. It was very delicious. The sandwich was crispy and fresh and the bun looked like it was handcrafted. The malt fries were unique because they had a vinegar powder on them. I've never tasted malt vinegar before, and it was a unique texture. Our waitress was very friendly, but I wish she had been a bit more attentive. She only stopped by to ask us for our drink order, our food order, and to give the check. My friends wanted to order more drinks, but because she did not come around as frequently as we would have liked, they were unable to place another order. I will give her the benefit of the doubt, however, because the restaurant was bustling from start to finish. Overall, very nice setting and meal. My partner ordered a burger rare, and I ordered the mushroom risotto. When the plates finally arrived, I was shocked. The rice in the risotto was completely undercooked, the dish was incredibly salty, and strangely, there were no mushrooms in it. Desperate for a proper meal, I sent it back, only for the same plate to come back two minutes later with raw mushrooms just thrown on top. I honestly thought it was a bad joke. I was so hungry I ended up just eating around the mushrooms, but it was deeply disappointing. As for the burger, it came out well done, the exact opposite of what was ordered. But again, we were too hungry to ask for it to be redone. Sadly, we will not be coming back. This was not just a bad meal, it felt like no one in the kitchen cared. That plate coming back with raw mushrooms said everything. Circa lost two loyal customers that night.
