Summertime is a great…read moreseason to explore places far and away especially rest for great food. ‍ As I was searching for farms and produce stands, I noticed this business and since I love pancakes here, there and everywhere, I planned a day away that included farm stands, backroad NJ scenic driving and fruity pancakes. Due to circumstances beyond my control, we arrived at noon on Thursday, breakfast ended at 11am and so we pivoted to lunch items that included a Boars Head cheesesteak, chips and pickle plus a really tasty cheeseburger . As we were leaving, my husband decided on a large chocolate peanut butter milkshake which he deemed awesome. (Thanks Todd for stepping in and making one) We stopped at our pre planned list of farm stands and headed home. Very next day, Friday, up at dawn to get a few chores out of the way so we could head out to Gronsky's for the day #2 breakfast deadline! I prefer sitting at the counter and watching their magician, Tyler, assemble the food for orders, crack open the eggs, drop the pancake batter in the proper corner and keep all meats aligned for the plates. He's the king of that kitchen and each one of those servers is the queen doing the hustle, bustle, slide to the left, back up and move forward like square dancers on the move. From the Taylor ham, provolone and fried egg sandwich on that FRESH Kaiser roll to the omelette with those delicious home fries and my PEACH PANCAKE . . . . all of it was their special take on breakfast served their way. Almost 50 years, folks! Prices are absolutely reasonable for how the food is prepared and presented, quality ingredients cooked according to diners' specifications. What more can you ask for? It is a fairly large space with plenty of seating and a bar and felt spacious and clean. Our server Fernanda was very friendly and checked in with us regularly to see how we were enjoying the food as it came out. I started with the duck salad and had the sauerbraten for my entree. The duck salad was tasty with a nice dressing, my only complaint is that it came with 4 thin slices of duck (maybe a bite each). It definitely could have benefited from more duck, especially for a $23 salad. That said, I liked the blue cheese, apples, and cranberries that went with it. My entree was definitely the largest of the group and came with two huge thick potato pancakes, a hefty serving of red cabbage and a good portion of beef. I really enjoyed the dish and was pretty full afterwards. I would absolutely recommend this dish and eat it again. For dessert we tried their special, a mango cake which was very light and pleasant albeit a bit sweet. I would suggest checking/asking about portion sizes before you order as some dishes are smaller than others (the grilled shrimp appetizer is only 4 shrimp, the clams casino is 5 small/medium clams and the crab cake entree is two small to medium sized crab cakes with no sides). So I can see how some people are frustrated with the portions based on the prices. That being said, I would absolutely recommend both the duck salad and sauerbraten.

When we arrived we told the waiter that we were celebrating our mother's 93 birthday. The waiter took our orders. Mom ordered filet mignon and the lobster bisque soup. Other family members ordered French dip, lobster BLT and the salmon. The lobster bisque was not fresh and had no flavor. The soup was luke warm and had a film on the top. The bacon on the lobster was also stale and fatty. But the worst part was Mom's meal which came with no sides and the waiter never offered her any sides to choose from even if they would be at an additional cost. She struggled to chew the meat. It was tough and fatty. The waiter cleared the plates and Mom told him that the meat was not good. His response was that she should have alerted him earlier and that he would have made it right. He said he would see what he could do compensate for the bad experience. However, nothing was offered or even mentioned after that. We ordered her carrot cake which came with no candle despite the waiter knowing it was her birthday. We were very surprised to have had such a bad experience at the Clinton House because in the past the food has always been good. The restaurant was empty which was also surprising for a Sunday lunch. The bill was over $300 including tip for 4 people. We had only 2 glasses of wine and 2 desserts. Quite expensive for a lousy meal and experience. Do better!

The parking lot was packed, but luckily we were able to get seated right away (and we timed it perfectly, because a massive tour bus arrived just as we were leaving!). We ordered a variety of dishes for the table. My son got the chocolate pancakes with bacon, and he absolutely LOVED them. To me, the pancakes tasted a bit oily, and only one of the three bacon strips arrived truly crispy. My friend enjoyed his meal of steak tips with eggs over easy, cheesy hashbrowns, and roasted apples--he mentioned the apples tasted just like apple pie filling. My own meal was where things fell flat. I ordered the grilled catfish with grits, over-easy eggs, and cheesy hashbrowns. The eggs were cooked perfectly, but the catfish was quite bland. The grits completely lacked flavor, so I tried mixing them with the cheesy, salty hashbrowns to help, but I ultimately ended up abandoning both. I had a biscuit instead, which was okay, but I left the meal feeling full rather than satisfied. On the bright side, the retail shop was so much fun to walk around, and we loved looking through all of their holiday decor. I really want to emphasize that the staff here is phenomenal and the hospitality is top-notch, but unfortunately, the food just didn't live up to the hype for me.

We had a 7 PM reservation on a Wednesday night, and the place and parking lot were packed! Good sign to start! To begin, I enjoyed the Ruby grapefruit mocktail. Although I'd love trying new and unique cocktails at different establishments, I was in the mood for something light and refreshing and nonalcoholic. This hit just a spot. For food, we started off with the margherita pizza to share. Then, I opted for the crispy, buttermilk chicken sandwich with malt vinegar, potato wedges/fries. It was very delicious. The sandwich was crispy and fresh and the bun looked like it was handcrafted. The malt fries were unique because they had a vinegar powder on them. I've never tasted malt vinegar before, and it was a unique texture. Our waitress was very friendly, but I wish she had been a bit more attentive. She only stopped by to ask us for our drink order, our food order, and to give the check. My friends wanted to order more drinks, but because she did not come around as frequently as we would have liked, they were unable to place another order. I will give her the benefit of the doubt, however, because the restaurant was bustling from start to finish. Overall, very nice setting and meal. Cute decor, including an Anthony Bourdain abstract portrait.

The spritzer flight was delicious, my favorite of the four was the Aperol Spritz (a little sweeter and less bitter than other places) and the Raspberry Spritz. The Hugo was very refreshing and Limoncello was unfortunately not my favorite, but the other three made up for it and then some! The cheese curds were crunchy and came with a delicious ranch sauce for dipping, and the big pretzel was huge, salty and doughy- the cheese sauce was good with it but we also tried the honey mustard my son got with his chicken fingers and liked that combo even more! For my lunch I had a burger off the day's specials menu, it was the "A1 Burger" which was cooked perfectly and made better by the A1 inspired aioli, Gouda cheese, etc. The fries were good and crispy. I've been here many times and have seen it go down hill. Sadly the son has not followed in his dad's footsteps. The food lacks the love and is just okay.
