Our waitress was excellent but the host was rude. My friend and I walked in on a rainy Monday morning. There was a sign telling us, not asking or thanking us, to wipe our feet. I thought the sign was insulting because whether it's raining or not if you have a mat I'm wiping my feet out of respect and habit. Anyway, the gentleman behind the register followed us to our seat and before we could sit down he told us to be careful because we didn't wipe our feet. I was even more offended and told him I didn't appreciate him telling me I didn't wipe my feet. More words were exchanged before we eventually sat down and had our breakfast. First time coming here after having passed it a handful of times. It was quite busy when we got there (10:30am ish) on a Sunday but we got seated quickly. I ordered a corned beef omelette with wheat toast and home fries. Pretty standard fare and just like other times I've had it at other spots. Service was super fast. Our server was friendly and we could see her hustling running around the floor. Giving the staff lots of props for hauling a$$ and taking care of the many customers coming in to the diner. Found this place due to its convenient location near the hospital up the street. And it's Jersey, so diners are a trusted go-to. Usually. Server was friendly but the food was definitely not great. Was 5 of us for dinner. Two brisket dinners, one plain pasta, one lettuce wrap, two French onion soups and some disco fries added in as an extra share plate. (One person didn't have an entree, just soup and disco fries...and they didn't feel well later that night.) The lettuce wrap was very wet and messy, and later that night, that person also didn't feel well. She threw out her leftovers. The plain pasta was...plain pasta, so no biggie there. The two brisket plates were inedible. We tried. It was tough and chewy and not what a delicious brisket should be. I know brisket is difficult to get right, which is why they should really work on their preparation methods before having it on the menu. We had shakes for dessert, and those were good. One chocolate, one chips ahoy, one cookies and cream. Each of the cookie ones could have used more cookies, but that's a personal preference. Beverages: Their soda was definitely lacking carbonation. Their Co2 tank must have been out because it the sodas were flat within seconds. It's been a few weeks, so I'm hoping they've rectified that by now. The waiter brought us the soup with her finger inside the bowl; then 10' before closing time she told us to bag the food while we were eating; so we felt pressured and we asked immediately a food box, and while she was counting the money, she brought us the food box with her hand touching inside the box. Great food, our waitress was very polite and friendly! Very disappointed with management, he shamed and embarrassed our server in front of everyone eating around us. When you have a problem with a staff member you pull them aside in private! He was very rude, from the moment We walked in he was already arguing with his staff making a negative environment around everyone dinning in the restaurant. Decided to try Flemington Diner for the first time the week before, switching it up from our regular spot. This is not a reflection of that visit, which the food and service was great, keep in mind they weren't busy at the time. Today we walked in and waited for someone to seat us as they were busy. The gentleman at the front was bringing out a take out order and didn't acknowledge us - I didn't think anything of it. Once he was done with that I asked for a booth for two. He seemed agitated, said that he didn't have any but went to check anyway. On his way back said there weren't any available. Simultaneously I saw a table that was going to be available when it was cleaned, the couple was literally just getting up, so I asked if I could wait for that. He threw the menus on the counter and said I'd have to wait, which I had said before his little tirade. That's not how you run the front. Turkey soup was very good...all else the same, good but not outstanding (roast beef, chicken, eggs). I come to this diner very often. Brought my wife here the other night. Checked the Yelp reviews upon arriving home and noticed I had never written a review. Let's remedy that, shall we? I have always enjoyed my visits here. Your mileage may vary. Until my last visit, I had always ordered breakfast. A good omelette, well done home fries and a toasted english. Coffee. On our recent visit, we arrived at seven pm or so and we ordered burgers. The Ringoes for me. The Lebanon for my wife. Our burgers were large, buns toasted, toppings generously applied and most importantly, the burgers were cooked rare like we requested. Pickled jalapeños on my burger packed a punch which I greatly appreciated. Good avocado and pepper jack cheese on my wife's. A word on service. I have never had an issue. Friendly and prompt. On our recent visit, we had a server who probably has been working there a while. She was very friendly and made me a fresh pot of decaf because she was concerned it had been sitting around a while. Hit and miss. Had a really good burger with a friend last week, and then a very sub-par breakfast with the kids today. First the good: the burgers were huge, perfectly cooked and delicious. The gentleman who served us was efficient and friendly. My guest was very impressed. The "not great": 10:45 am brunch. Our server was VERY slow (she only had a few tables). We consistently frequent this diner as the food is usually quite good. Tonight, was the worst meal we have ever had here; so bad, that we will never go back. My husband and I ordered meals which came with soup. We had matzah ball soup, both soups were cold and my husband's spoon had crud on it. Food comes out, my husband had turkey which was ice cold. Ordered a sandwich and a salad... should not take over an hour to reach the table. The waiter politely let us know the food was going to take a bit, but there's definitely no way it should take that long; especially since people seated after my party are getting their food. If the diner is aware the kitchen gets backed up like this, how has this problem not already been addressed and solved. I've been here a few times now and I have to say that the food is not consistent. When this place first opened up I was in love with their French onion soup, now it's just super salty. The service was fast and then it started to go down hill; I ordered a simple cheese burger deluxe and I asked for t as rare as they can make it... the waitress explicitly said she requested it to be really rare... I gave the benefit of doubt when I saw the low rating and I have to say that much of what I read I felt was very accurate about this diner. We are new to the area and have been frequenting the clinton diner mostly. However, since we are always in Flemington I decided to check this diner out with my son. I generally don't give ratings just for food on eateries. I take into consideration the location, cleanliness, personalities/customer service, selection of food, comfort and the businesses practices. First impressions matter. We were greeted and seated which went well but we had to step over a spill of water on the floor. That is not what was poor, it was the lack of sense of urgency to wipe it up that was surprising. The water stayed there, though acknowledged by various staff (including hostess and front desk ladies). One person slipped and various other patrons found their way to step over. Disturbing seeing that several elderly were seated nearby. Moving on to ambiance and business itself.... it's clean. Partly why I give it two stars is the fact it does appear very clean. Feels very new inside and modern. I wasn't crazy about the clear booth walls though and having to have to watch a person across from me chewing his food. Super turn off there. I felt like they went for an "open feeling" and instead it's too transparent with no real privacy to even have a discussion. The floors and table was clean. Menus clean (yes I hate crusty dirty laminated menus germ fest hello) The waiter was nice. Very personable. However I was extremely disappointed and felt MISLEAD when the bill arrived. When ordering and having told him it was our first time there we went through the meal for my son and he asked "what meat would he like on the side" and offered "various types of fries options in lieu of potatoes since kids meals came with them. He failed to mention all of these things were EXTRA costs. I even asked him what came with it and he replied "fries and we also have cuz fries too" as if an option. For my meal I asked if I could substitute the peppers in my California omelettes for another vegetable and he said yes. Yet again on my bill it was EXTRA because that type of vegetable was MORE. overall all those options he told us about came to over $12 extra on the bill. I felt like it was an approach vs an error because how can it be EVERY single thing was an error? The food is VERY overpriced. I saw this and related to the reviews on this but I was still willing to try the food and expected for the price portions and flavor would be worth it. The wait staff have cute little matching uniforms but who cares? There is booth seating and booths with chair seating options as well as bar seating. Tables are connected to walls. Cups were never refilled too. Which moves me into my next review point. Food. My son loved the silver dollar pancakes. Felt it was tasty. As well as the scrambled eggs with cheese (which by the way a slice of Kraft cheese on top costs almost $3, wtf?) he loved the hot chocolate but when I tasted it it was very Swiss miss like. I guess perhaps he wouldn't know better as he doesn't drink them. Lol the fries (which we were told for kids was in place of potatoes) were very oily and tasted crisp but very fast good like. It's like a fatty oil taste which made for tasty if you like fattening fast food type of frying. The sausage links which again were made to sound part of the meal were delicious and were the fat type not the skinny processed type. My egg white omelette (the California omelette) was ok. It was very bland and no real flavors. I put some pepper to taste something but even though bland the ingredients appeared to be fresh. I don't eat salt but I've never had a California omelette without some natural type of seasoning option. The mozzarella is not fresh mozzarella. I was told my options for toast but yet again was neglected to be informed bread type has added cost when it was presented as options. The I ed coffee was terrible. It took 6 half and half's to get it to lighten. I couldn't believe it. And I don't usually use a lot of sugar but I felt to get it less bitter I had to pour it in. Food was subpar, period. Lastly, I want to mention something I've learned with this experience. Personality and customer service friendly smiles should NEVER fall to a waist side. The ladies in front don't even bother to look at you. They act like robots taking payments and never asked how was your experience or if everything was ok. Nothing. No personable experience. It was sad. I came to realize that that old diner in clinton as much as it's old school in look the fact they are old school in manners and professionalism, that goes a heck of a long wAy. To me I'd drive the extra 15 min to go to clinton vs go to this place again. I never left a diner feeling swindled and taken advantage of yet. Today that changed.
