I have known Flemington for almost my entire life. When I plugged in the address I did not pay attention to where this place was located and when I got into town I thought, really? It's here? An old house, ample parking, a fork and knife welcoming you at the steps. For dinner we sat upstairs. Rooming for an old building. Quiet enough to have a conversation. Great service from start to finish. The seafood chowder that was on special was a great place to start. My main course of the Cherry Coke Short Ribs - Amanera cherry demi, lemon & parsley gremolata was wonderful. The staff is welcoming, friendly and professional. The food is nothing less than perfection. The quality, preparation and presentation are as good as the finest in New York. This time we started with the grilled romaine with a caesar dressing and fresh shaved parmesan and the mushroom and goat cheese sour dough toast, as appetizers. We enjoyed every morsel. Followed with the perfectly grilled lobster tails and grilled salmon with beurre blanc sauce.The desert menu is extensive. We shared the Oreo cookie bread pudding with vanilla salted caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.Definitely looking forward to returning in the near future. read more

For entrees, my wife had the crab cakes while I chose the pork tenderloin. We ended with a brown butter cake with vanilla gelato. We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation after attending a car show on Main Street. We were seated right away. We didn't have time to stop anywhere to pick up a bottle of wine. Luckily Matt's works with Unionville Winery and we were able to enjoy a bottle of Pinot Noir with dinner. Same quaint atmosphere as our last visit. This was in a Victorian style house with seating on both floors. There was an open kitchen on the first floor, which was cool and the upstairs there was a private area for bigger parties as well as other additional seating. The menu was intriguing as well as a four-course menu offered on a couple weekday nights. I believe that it changes weekly and the regular menu changes seasonally. The service was friendly, and the food came out in a timely manner. They start the meal with a loaf of bread. There was a side of butter and an apple balsamic vinegar. The bread came out warm and was tasty. The vinegar was sweet and had a thick texture that I enjoyed. For a starter, I had the Griggstown farm deviled eggs ($16.50) and tuna two ways ($18.50). The eggs had dry aged bacon, bell pepper chutney shallot, and a chive whipped yolk. There were four large egg halves present, and they were filled appropriately. The chutney was a nice touch and gave me sweet banana pepper vibes. The bacon added a crunch factor to it. The tuna was seared and in a tartare preparation. It came with a wasabi cream, rooster sauce, and crispy wontons. The seared tuna was cooked perfectly and wonderful. The tartare was a little too fine. I would have liked little pieces instead. The flavor was all there though. I also tried the roasted squash soup and port wine poached pear salad from the four-course menu that was being offered the night I attended. The soup was good with a nice, thick texture while the salad was not bad but did not like the frisee choice. The pear had a very clear cinnamon flavoring too. For an entrée, I had the apple cider brined pork chop ($36.75). This came with Applewood smoked bacon, onion, and an aged cheddar crust. Again, this was cooked to perfection. It was a large piece of meat on the bone with a good portion of mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. Both potatoes and vegetables were nicely done. This was smokier than I thought it would be, but it was extremely flavorful and tender. The apple cider brine really showed up. The cheddar crust was slightly overpowered by the smoky bacon, but not a huge deal. I also tried the day boat scallops from the course menu. Once again, perfectly cooked and the risotto that was part of the dish was lighter than I thought. It was a pumpkin risotto that was good. For dessert, the caramel apple bread pudding was shared as part of the four-course menu. This consisted of Bonacorsi Farm apples, cinnamon crumble topping, and a vanilla gelato. This seemed to be at the pass for a bit before it was served given the ice cream was mostly melted and the bread pudding was not that hot, but it was fine given the flavor of everything. The caramel really came through here. Will I go back? Definitely. read more

Been wanting to try this place for the better part of a year and so glad the wife and I finally did! I started off with tuna 2-ways and the bride had the crab mac-n-cheese, both absolutely fantastic! We then split the grilled Caesar salad which was delicious. For the entree, I had the Duck 2-ways (grilled breast & leg confit) and my wife had the Scallops with Risotto. CIA alumni, Chef Matt McPherson has created a unique BYOB American Bistro in a quaint Flemington Victorian house with an open kitchen on the first floor. It features flavorful fresh local meat, seafood and vegetables cooked on a wood fired grill. They have fresh oysters on a half shell, but I was surprised that they don't offer them grilled with garlic and cheese in a style similar to that which is served at Drago's in New Orleans. The service is friendly, helpful and efficient. The Rooster House Salad with a honey sherry vinaigrette and Manchego Cheese was colorful and refreshing. The Rustic Wild Mushroom Soup is a creamy, vegetarian, delicious soup layered with deep flavors. The grilled romaine lettuce topped with grated cheese was charred and flavorful. The Grilled Calamari appetizer was in a spicy cream sauce, and the grilled octopus was texturally both crisp and tender. The stuffed Pablano Chile with pulled pork also was quite flavorful. All came with the Smokey infusion of flavor from the wood fired grill. The stuffed cod was a tender filet stuffed with delicate crab meat. The grilled 5 oz. lobster tails are a bit small and barely big enough to appreciate the grilled flavor, but you do get two. The Rib Eye Steak is quite large and cooked precisely to your desired temperature. All the vegetables were colorful and tasty. Desserts were good but small in size. The chocolate flourless torte was too cold and quite firm in texture. The mascarpone with berries was excellent. Overall the dining experience was enjoyable, but expect to pay around $100 per person with tax and tip. We look forward to a return visit at some point. read more

I was actually disappointed, my scallop risotto lacked a bit of flavor, and most unfortunately, the scallops were chewy. My husband ordered the NY strip special, the flavor was good, but we both thought the price was a bit much. We eat very well at home, so I guess we expect a lot more when we go out. What a great find. We heard about this place from a friend and decided to try it out for my birthday dinner. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent! I had the cowboy steak and my wife had the fillet. Both were cooked perfectly and delicious. They offer a variety of sauces to go with the steak but I suggest getting them on the side, since steak should stand on it's own for flavor. These steaks definitely didn't need any help from a sauce. I was really hoping to love it here, since my finance was here a few weeks ago and had a great meal. Sadly, we had a few issues: We ordered the Calamari with Chipotle sauce and it was very hard. We weren't sure if that meant it was overcooked or undercooked, but it wasn't good. I ordered the Filet Mignon with Blue Cheese and Applewood bacon. The steak was a little stringy, but at $46.00, I didn't expect much. The BC/Bacon topping was very good. The mashed potatoes were barely warm, they were tasty, but I don't enjoy cold food, the same with the veggie side. She had the Short Ribs and gave it a 7 to 7.5, not terrible but not amazing. The server was very attentive and was always there when we needed her. There is potential here, but I probably won't be back. read more

For the entrees we had the ahi tuna, pork chop, dry aged strip, veal chop, and special of the evening red snapper. Everything was top notch. Would give them 5 stars because this place ROCKS but unfortunately recently I feel the quality has decreased and prices have increased simultaneously. Here's what's up-- Favorites back then: *Grilled romaine salad: perfectly charred yet still a great crunch with a velvety anchovy dressing! *Tuna Tartar: came with the best crunchy crackers and a spicy wasabi drizzle. Mmmm. Ridiculously good. However, the last time I came was about 6 months ago. Prices skyrocketed. Had the Grilled Salmon and it just didn't really do much for me. But the sides were delightful! The salmon needed a zing from some acid/lacked seasoning or something. BUT everything else is delicious, more so the appetizers than the entrees. I still come here and recommend you all come for the appetizers! Love love love! read more

Last night my wife and I met our friends for dinner at Matt's. It is very nice setting in the heart of downtown Flemington, NJ. We started by splitting two salads: the Rooster House Salad and the rocket salad. We asked to split them. That was not a problem. Both were excellent. Our wives each had a crab stuffed trout entree. That was superb. My friend had the sword fish steak. also excellent. I ordered the scallop & mushroom risotto. Again superb. I took half home and had it for dinner tonight. For dessert we tried the bourbon bread pudding and a what I would call a custard with blueberry and shaved dark chocolate. Excellent. Service was by a bunch of young folks and was superb. Nice, knowledgeable, attentive- but not too on top of you. Everything he recommended was delicious. We ordered zucchini cakes, mushroom soup, wagyu flat iron, shrimp pasta, and the seasonal bread pudding (pumpkin) Everything was delicious. We couldn't decide if we liked the mushroom soup, zucchini cakes, or steak were our favorite, as they were all phenomenal. It is so great to see the continued vibrancy of this "small town" establishment. Matt and his team cook like big city with a wonderful farm-to-table feel. We started with the Salt-Roasted beet salad where the beets were cooked perfectly and the toasted goat cheese round was the best accompaniment. Next we're the deviled eggs. While Matt has offered deviled eggs in the past, these were the best I've ever had here with a hint of lemon a nice co ready to the light horseradish. I had the veal chop and my husband had the Porterhouse. The only issue was we could t finish our meals. The vegetables were brightly colored and just the right consistency. Mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment as well. Even though we didn't finish our meals, we still got dessert - vanilla cheesecake with salted caramel and berries bit absolutely did NOT disappoint.
