This was easily the most disappointing hibachi experience I've had. The filet mignon was overcooked, dry, and completely lacking in flavor. The fried rice and vegetables were equally bland, with no seasoning or depth. Overall, the food was underwhelming and far from what I expected. Restaurants occasionally have a bad night and can be worth revisiting, unfortunately I don't think this was off night unappealing seems like par here. Definitely not worth trying again. read more

Was visiting my friend in the city and she suggested we order takeout from Flame. We ordered a couple different rolls and everything was so good! My favorite roll was the truffle soy toro. The soy sauce had truffle oil in it and complemented the roll perfectly. I had never had escolar before, but the flavor of the fish almost reminded me of tuna. The garlic on top of the sushi was a nice touch to the roll. All the food was so good and the sushi was very fresh. Took about 20 minutes for the food to be ready. All staff was wearing masks. Loved this Yelp find and double loved their Sunday brunch specials paired with our Yelp check in offer (free appetizer!!) We sat at the counter and immediately connected with the bartender. Sassy, spunky young woman with bright eyes and a beautiful smile. Great service. We each choose from the brunch specials and enjoyed a house wine, miso and ginger salad that accompanied our brunch special entree. While I was there, 5pm on a Wednesday, the two tables they had going were kids birthday parties. I stayed at the bar. They have a happy hour from 5-7:30pm, and the bartender Liza was great. Mixed a great cocktail of the month, Apple vodka with fresh lime and another fruit juice. The suggestion of bbq duck bun was spot on, crispy duck with a super soft bun and pickled vegetables. I also had the peach marinated ribs, request slow cooked so the meat just fell off the bone and the barbecue sauce was sweet with the peach but tangy with a light vinegar. Went here based on the positive reviews. The interior of the restaurant and presentation of the food was nice. The lunch special prices were unbeatable but I'm afraid the food must also take a hit in quality. I can't speak for the hibachi meals which seem to be a big draw here, but the sushi lunch and chirashi my partner and I had were pretty gross. My chirashi had a ton of barely-edible filler seaweed and some sort of nest made with radish maybe(?) confusingly taking up space, a decent portion of fish, but I'm not sure it was really sushi rice. My plate smelled like a fish tank and my fish did *not* taste or smell fresh. I was really disappointed. The service was friendly but slow and there were few parties seated in the restaurant. All of the food had great flavor and it was cooked to perfection. The hibachi menu is pretty standard with steak, chicken and seafood. They also offer several sushi options and appetizers. I can never say I've been to a bad hibachi restaurant and Flame certainly has not changed my mind! Flame is a great family friendly location on the upper east side. Its even walking distance from the Natural History Museum (if you don't mind walking 15 minutes). Their vegetarian options are plentiful and they have great discounts and coupons that make the experience even more affordable. All of the chefs have their own styles and sing their songs of choice! It's quite fun seeing the different performances going on all at once. Nevertheless, each table is spread apart at a good distance so you don't hear too much of what's going on at your neighbor's table! The chef was really nice and funny, he loved to sing. This review is for the management, not the food. I unfortunately did not get a chance to try the food. I hate giving bad reviews on Yelp, and consider myself a pretty flexible customer. That being said, the experience I had with the management at Flame was incredibly rude, dismissive, and scolding. TL;DR: Was not able to physically get to the restaurant in time for my reservation because of holiday street closures/police blockages, and was charged a no-show fee of $140. After three tries of trying to get a manager to call me back, she rudely told me it was my fault for not canceling the reservation or making it in time for the reservation, even though I had called the host. I had a reservation for 7 people the night before Thanksgiving. Flame's reservation policy is no shows will be charged at $20 per person. When I made the reservation there was no indication from the restaurant that I should allow extra time to get there because of road blockages. Flame is right by the Museum of Natural History, so on Thanksgiving Eve police had blocked off all roads and walkways because of the crowds coming to see the balloons be blown up for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. We could not PHYSICALLY CROSS THE STREET TO GET TO THE RESTAURANT. The only way to get across the street would be to walk all the way down to 72nd St and come back up. I called the host about 30 minutes before our reservation to let them know we are having trouble getting to the restaurant because of the street closures. The host was very understanding, telling me that he himself was late to work because of the all the blockages. Unfortunately he could only hold the table for 15 minutes, which would not be enough time for us to make it. I asked if I could cancel the reservation and he said he would try. The day after Thanksgiving, I was charged a no-show fee of $140 ($20 per person). I immediately called the restaurant to see if the charges could be dropped. I spoke to a hostess, who was very understanding but ultimately could do nothing. She told me she would leave a message for the manager who would call me back. I didn't receive a call back. I called again two days later, and happened to speak to the same hostess. She was surprised I called again because she thought that the manager had called me back. She again took my number and told me she would leave a message for the manager. I didn't receive a call back. I called again some days later and finally spoke to the manager. I explained the unusual situation and how I tried my best to make the reservation on time. She was detached, immediately dismissive, and NOT understanding at all. She BLAMED ME, telling me I should have canceled the reservation if I wasn't going to make it, (even though I called and tried) and said it was restaurant policy to charge for no-shows. She dismissed how hard it was to get to the restaurant that day. She denied knowing about other times I called and DIDN'T EVEN LOOK UP MY RESERVATION to confirm any of the details. I called Yelp Reservations, and they told me that I have to take it up with the restaurant. I tried filing a dispute with my credit card, but because the reservation was made through Yelp Reservations, my credit card spoke to Yelp and not the restaurant. I now have to pay $140 for an unfair no-show. read more

Came here on a Saturday night for dinner while visiting NYC over the weekend. Our friend found this place on yelp; given the reviews were not bad, we decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately, the food was just... not great. For starters, we got the green onion pancake and salmon carpaccio. Both of them are pretty decent compared to the rest. We also ordered Uni and Toro ($10 per piece). The uni was pretty good, but the Toro was terrible. My boyfriend and I are big sushi fans and eat Omakase regularly, so we know what Toro is supposed to taste like. Instead of toro that is fatty and melts in your mouth, this one is so chewy I thought I was eating bad overcooked beef tendon. It was so chewy I ended up have to swallow the whole thing with water as if I was taking pills. We informed the waiter that it tasted really bad, and his response from the chef was that they recently switched suppliers? Well, I'd recommend switching suppliers again. We also got the pad Thai which is decent (but not great) and the oink oink fried rice. The fried rice honestly tasted really weird because it was trying to be healthy but it was also super oily. Flame upper west side was good overall but here is why we are only giving them 3 stars: Food: good overall and a nice variety. We went for hibachi for a table of 10 and were told that we only have 2 hours (until 6pm) for dinner. The appetizers and meals were well cooked and seasoned - not too dry or overcooked. They even have a kids menu which is great. If you want noodles or fried rice, that is at an additional as it not included in the price of the main hibachi course. The only dessert they offer is strawberry ice cream. They do have a decent selection of sake. The chefs are entertaining and Alejandro was great! Service: easy to make reservation and they required a credit card at the time of reservation to hold the table of 10. Not sure if it is a common practice or if was because it was Mother's Day weekend. When we checked in, they repeated that we have until 6pm before the next reservation which we acknowledged. Our first waiter was great and before we paid, a different waiter took over and we were not sure what happened to our first waiter nor did anyone say anything. After we paid, a woman came over to tell us that we have to leave - it was only 5:40pm and we just got sake. We were really shocked and disappointed as it was clearly not 6pm and we were still finishing our sake. We told her that we would leave as soon as we finish our sake and it was not 6pm yet. Cleanliness: the bathrooms were not cleaned as there was dirty tissue paper and water on the only working bathroom stall and on the floor of the ladies room. ADA: we had a couple of elderly folks in our party and the bathrooms were in the basement down a long, narrow staircase- they chose to not use the restroom since they would have had go down and up the stairs and it was not convenient for them. Overall, we had a nice time and food was good but the service and experience did not live up to other reviews- we were treated just like a number- rushed in and out. I was so surprised, impressed and appreciative to find such a gem in the upper west side. I don't expect much of Asian restaurants in upper Manhattan and I definitely (I confess) do not expect much at all in terms of dining out options in the UWS. I browsed the menu and saw a boat load of options and thought of items I could order that is hard to mess up/hard to not go wrong. Well I started with the Grilled Chinese Chicken salad with Napa cabbage, carrots, sesame, peanuts - there was a generous portion of chicken. This pleased my taste buds and I instantly was optimistic about the rest of the meal. Next I got Crispy Duck Buns with Scallion, cucumber, housemade hoisin - 2 buns come in an order. The buns (which I call Pac-Man buns) were bigger than what I've seen previously. And I loved it! The duck was meaty and crispy at the same time and full of flavor! Finally my carb overload - the Oink Oink Fried Rice! Definitely felt like a pig after eating this but a happy one! Black rice, shishito pepper, carrot, green peas, pork belly, bacon, Chinese sausage, egg, scallion. Just yum! Too bad they only had strawberry ice cream for dessert but also a blessing in disguise- I exceeded my calories for the late dinner. I came to Flame with my friend for dinner on a Friday around 6pm. We had a reservation which was not really needed for the non-hibachi tables. Service was fantastic! We got our orders taken and food brought out asap which was nice without feeling pressured to order quickly or leave the restaurant. For food we ordered the crystal shrimp dumplings and BBQ duck buns for an appetizer. The shrimp dumplings were amazing with a really tasty sauce and they came very warm with a generous piece of shrimp. The duck buns had a great filling and the bun overall was good except perhaps the top of it was a bit dry (not a make it or break it thing for me). For the entrees I got a classic rainbow roll with miso soup and my friend ordered the drunken noodle. The miso soup was very good and came with good pieces of seaweed and tofu. The rainbow roll was frankly not the best I have had, the flavor of the fish was not that mind-blowing and the pieces themselves were small. To be fair though there were giant pieces of crabmeat inside the roll which I guess made up for it. My friend really liked his chicken drunken noodle which I did not try but it smelled amazing. Overall the service was great, the ambiance and location were nice, and the food was good. I suspect this place is famous for the hibachi so I will come back next time to give that a try since it seems to be their specialty (it also smelled delicious and seemed very fun!) read more

Disappointing- We got there early and saw the chefs doing their thing singing, making huge explosions of fire, putting on a big show..we were so excited to get seated. That's where it ended. I didn't get my appetizer or salad, but they brought my husband his soup. No show for us, he made a flaming onion volcano he couldn't start, he tossed an egg in his hat. Didn't say anything while he was cooking, not even the clanging of the spachelor, we could here from every other table. My friends and I walked into Flame hoping to try their hibachi experience. Unfortunately, we had not made a reservation and could have dinner at one of the hibachi grills. We ended up trying items from their non-hibachi menu, and overall, I would say it was an average experience. We started off with the braised duck mini tacos, and the duck meat was quite tender and well-seasoned. The only aspect that I would have changed would have been to make either the duck crispier or make the taco shell firmer/crunchier in order to offset the filling. Otherwise, I thought it was a solid appetizer. For my main entree, I got a whole, deep-fried fish with tamarind sauce. The plating of the fish was unexpected: instead of the whole fish coming entirely intact, there were fried chunks on top of the remaining fish head/body. I thought the tamarind sauce had a good combination of tart and sweet flavors, but I was disappointed that the fish was otherwise unseasoned. The parts of the fish that were uncovered by sauce were completely bland. If i went back to Flame, I would definitely try the hibachi grill-the people who were there at dinner seemed to be enjoying themselves greatly! read more
