Kitaro - Sushi Bars Near Me - New York, New York

This is the kitaro toro special It's $54 you get 2 pieces of tuna toro, 2 pieces of yellowtail toro, two pieces of salmon toro, a triple toro roll and miso soup. Here's what I'll say this roll, I did not enjoy at all. It was not cut well it was hard to wield. It fell apart horribly. Not a fan. Now the actual six pieces, the word toro, gets thrown around too often. None of this is toro, hamachi toro would be marbled. The tuna was a little more fatty than standard tuna but this was not chutoro or o-toro. Same with the salmon. So this is not what they said. With that said, this is six huge pieces of extremely fresh, high quality fish. At this price though I expected something very different. Not bad by any stretch but felt a bit deceived. read more

I was in the area around lunch time and was hungry. I saw that they were nearby, so I ordered their 3 Maki lunch special for $19 (2 salmon avocado roll and 1 eel avocado roll) and their salmon bento box for $19. Each lunch special came with miso soup or side salad, I ordered one of each. Overall good but a little pricey given the portion size. read more

During the pandemic when we lived in a tiny, rural town with all of one stoplight, we gained a new appreciation for neighborhood sushi joints like Kitaro, which we once took for granted. If I approach this analysis with snobbery... the comparison that a prior reviewer made to Takeda is preposterous. Kitaro and Takeda are in two very different arenas of play. Takeda is traditional, Edomae style, seasonal, Michelin-quality -- very much a special occasion restaurant. Kitaro is an inexpensive, Americanized, neighborhood sushi joint, good for a quick dinner or lunch. The level of quality is very different. That said, Kitaro doesn't do badly in its own swim lane. We personally like the quality of fish at comparably priced Miyako better, and the lighter / better blotted tempura and katsu there, but.... Kitaro happens to serve and deliver party platters that have a greater array of (mostly very Americanized) maki that our kids and their friends will eat. (Party Platter A includes 14 rolls: avocado / asparagus / cucumber roll, California, salmon, Alaska, eel avocado, shrimp tempura, peanut avocado, tuna, salmon mango, vegetable tempura (sweet potato), spicy crunchy shrimp, white tuna avocado, yellowtail scallion, and tuna avocado). It's a good way to feed a crowd of blossoming sushi aficionados. There's good variety. The sushi rice is well made, the fish is good enough. I personally do not enjoy Americanized sushi -- or I guess non-Edomae sushi in general, usually (e.g. spicy crunchy rolls, rolls that include cream cheese, mayonnaise, tempura, kani, salmon, etc...). But for the large contingent of folks who do, the quality to price ratio at Kitaro will probably make you happy. We are ultimately glad and extremely grateful to have Kitaro in our neighborhood! read more

More like a 4-star place but want to help them out and they are a Mom and Pop. It's a decent spot if you know what you are coming in for. Salmon Rolls are my favorite, Tuna is good too. (Honorable mention to Salmon Special and Toro Roll) They slice big pieces here. Quick Tips: $2 Miso Soup hits the spot $1 Hot Tea has a hint of toasted seaweed flavor $10 Large Hot House Sake is a deal, can share for 2 (or 1 if you're like me) $7 Salmon, Tuna, or Cali Rolls Lunch Special is until 4:30 PM, 7 days a week Downside, place is a bit understaffed, so recommend getting as much of your order together as possible. (Lots of Grubhub/delivery orders also flow in) Good neighborhood spot to hang with friends that is friendly to your wallet as well. Manage expectations and you'll have a good time. Here's what you need to know: Kitaro has great value. They're considerate and friendly, accommodating, and the fish is good quality (I'm super picky--you can trust me). They're exactly the type of spot you want to have in your neighborhood. Affordable and fresh, well-prepared food that's brought to your table (or to-go) quickly makes living here just that much better. The atmosphere is also cozy and nice, nothing fancy but very cozy. Ordered the three roll take out special. It is a pretty good deal, $13 for three rolls with soup or salad. Most places give both miso soup and a salad, but no big deal. I got the salmon mango roll, salmon avocado roll and shrimp tempura roll. All were good, but the mango was not ripe at all. Overall a solid lunch deal though I would recommend Mido's lunch special as they give more food with the rolls. read more

Solid, reliable Japanese on the UWS. The lunch specials are a great value. Been going here for years and realized I never wrote a review.

A very cozy experience I ordered one of the teriyaki dinner specials and was surprised with how much food I received. The waitress who took my order was super friendly and attentive. The food was more or less on par with other sushi restaurants in NYC. The food was not mind blowing, but it was pretty fresh. Kitaro has a nice, general, and warm ambiance, which makes it perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat with friends or alone. Extra points for having heat. It was really cold outside during my visit, but the restaurant had the heat pumping. Typically, I find that many NYC restaurants tend to be a little cheap with the heat, and eating with my jacket on is a slight annoyance for me. I more than likely will revisit Kitaro in the near future. read more

I picked up a veggie bento from here for dinner. It had seaweed salad, a veggie roll, veggie gyoza, veggie teriyaki, rice and miso soup. I never miss Kitaro when I'm on the upper west side and I long for it when I'm working in other cities. It's so easy. It's so good. The folks running this establishment are so kind. Some of the best sushi anywhere. Fair pricing, casual enough to be relaxing, nice enough for a date night.

Will never order from here again. Aside from the sushi being mediocre at best, it always arrives minimum of a half hour late. Tonight when I called to inquire where my food was, as it was an hour past the delivery eta, I was blessed with speaking to the nastiest woman who tried to talk over me and cut me off for the entire conversation, if you could call it that. I went with my bf wIth low expectations because we were very hungry we just went in to the first place we saw. The place has dim lights and the overall ambience is ok. To our surprise the food came promptly and the portions were big. The gyosas were veRy good, I got the udon with tempuRa; it's not the best but it's ok. The broth is tasty and the tempura is good. The only thing I would say is I feel the oil used to make tempura was old, you know that deep fried oil taste you get when you use the same oil over, and over again? My bf got a box and he seemed very happy with it. The people working there are nice and attentive and polite. read more

Ugh I'm so torn. I was ready to give a 5 star review after ordering from them twice in two days. I got the lunch special chicken teriyaki and then the salmon teriyaki. The good: Food is really good. The chicken was juicy and tender with a great flame broiled taste. The portions are large for lunch specials. Delivery is fast, no more than 25-30 mins. Prices are reasonable for UWS as well. The kinda bad: Deliveryman doesn't say thank you for tip. Which is such a pet peeve of mine because I really don't have to tip anything. But a thank you for my gratuity would be appreciated. THE UGLY: I ordered earlier today and was digging into my leftovers. I scooped out some rice onto my plate and I thank my lucky stars I noticed the longest white hair in my rice before I ate it. I'm African American - no way it could be mine. So yeah.... ruined my appetite. And chances of me ordering again, which sucks. read more

Be careful with the door as you enter and leave. If you intend to hold the door open for the person behind you, which I sure hope you do, do not let go of the door until you are sure s/he has gotten hold of it. The door is soooooo light and springy it will bounce back so quick once you let go. Could result in a bad case of slamming the door in someone's face. I really really liked the shrimp shumais that came with the bento box. The skin and the shrimp filling were very well integrated. the skin was soft and tender and there were enough shrimp in them that you could noticeably taste. Everything else that came with the box, however, were very mediocre.... On the other hand, the pork Katsu-don was pretty good. I was salivating the moment it came. It is served in a huge bowl and filled generously with rice topped with lots of sauce, pork and fried egg. It really is a big serving and your tummy will leave fully satisfied. Kitaro looks like your typical traditional-looking sushi place. I'd come back if I've tried out everything else in the neighborhood. read more

Are you F'ing kidding me? I was absolutely MYSTIFIED. We order two green teas on a chilly night. Scene goes as follows: **ENTER WIERD OLD LADY*** WIERD LADY: ONLY TEA? that's it yea? no food only tea... ME: Yes, do you sell green tea? WIERD LADY: you want tea, you must make mistake. YOU Go to Dunkin Donut or Cafe Bene, they have tea ME: So you don't serve tea in your restaurant? WIERD LADY: Tea you pay for tea. Tea only for costumer!! ME: OBVIOUSLY we are going to pay for tea!!! (seriously bro?) She huffs and puffs, runs off to register and bickers to coworker about us, might as well have pointed a finger or shot a smoke dart in the sky. Comes back, literally drops tea, saunters off again, prompting me to practically yell... ME:...EXCUSE ME! May we have some sugar please? WIERD LADY: OH NO NO.. this Japanese Restaurant, japanese people no use sugar in tea. Nobody do. Why you put sugar in green tea?!! ME: right right thanks, can we get some sugar please? WIERD LADY: green tea no go with sugar!! ME:THANKS, sugar please?!!!!!! (lady already walked away.. in the middle of yelling at me about how Japanese people dont like sugar.) DROPS sugar.. scoffs off again! Staring me down at this point. Real relaxing. Let me level with you guys for a sec. Kitaro is our go-to sushi place in the neighborhood. It's the most reasonably priced sushi around with consistent high quality food. After the initial pandemic shut down, they actually texted me to let me know they had reopened (which was good, because I'd missed them!).
