This is the kitaro toro special It's $54 you get 2 pieces of tuna toro, 2 pieces of yellowtail toro, two pieces of salmon toro, a triple toro roll and miso soup. Here's what I'll say this roll, I did not enjoy at all. It was not cut well it was hard to wield. It fell apart horribly. Not a fan. Now the actual six pieces, the word toro, gets thrown around too often. None of this is toro, hamachi toro would be marbled. The tuna was a little more fatty than standard tuna but this was not chutoro or o-toro. Same with the salmon. So this is not what they said. With that said, this is six huge pieces of extremely fresh, high quality fish. At this price though I expected something very different. Not bad by any stretch but felt a bit deceived. read more

During the pandemic when we lived in a tiny, rural town with all of one stoplight, we gained a new appreciation for neighborhood sushi joints like Kitaro, which we once took for granted. If I approach this analysis with snobbery... the comparison that a prior reviewer made to Takeda is preposterous. Kitaro and Takeda are in two very different arenas of play. Takeda is traditional, Edomae style, seasonal, Michelin-quality -- very much a special occasion restaurant. Kitaro is an inexpensive, Americanized, neighborhood sushi joint, good for a quick dinner or lunch. The level of quality is very different. That said, Kitaro doesn't do badly in its own swim lane. We personally like the quality of fish at comparably priced Miyako better, and the lighter / better blotted tempura and katsu there, but.... Kitaro happens to serve and deliver party platters that have a greater array of (mostly very Americanized) maki that our kids and their friends will eat. (Party Platter A includes 14 rolls: avocado / asparagus / cucumber roll, California, salmon, Alaska, eel avocado, shrimp tempura, peanut avocado, tuna, salmon mango, vegetable tempura (sweet potato), spicy crunchy shrimp, white tuna avocado, yellowtail scallion, and tuna avocado). It's a good way to feed a crowd of blossoming sushi aficionados. There's good variety. The sushi rice is well made, the fish is good enough. I personally do not enjoy Americanized sushi -- or I guess non-Edomae sushi in general, usually (e.g. spicy crunchy rolls, rolls that include cream cheese, mayonnaise, tempura, kani, salmon, etc...). But for the large contingent of folks who do, the quality to price ratio at Kitaro will probably make you happy. We are ultimately glad and extremely grateful to have Kitaro in our neighborhood! read more

Ordered the three roll take out special. It is a pretty good deal, $13 for three rolls with soup or salad. Most places give both miso soup and a salad, but no big deal. I got the salmon mango roll, salmon avocado roll and shrimp tempura roll. All were good, but the mango was not ripe at all. A very cozy experience I ordered one of the teriyaki dinner specials and was surprised with how much food I received. The waitress who took my order was super friendly and attentive. The food was more or less on par with other sushi restaurants in NYC. The food was not mind blowing, but it was pretty fresh. Kitaro has a nice, general, and warm ambiance, which makes it perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat with friends or alone. Extra points for having heat. It was really cold outside during my visit, but the restaurant had the heat pumping. Typically, I find that many NYC restaurants tend to be a little cheap with the heat, and eating with my jacket on is a slight annoyance for me. Ugh I'm so torn. I was ready to give a 5 star review after ordering from them twice in two days. I got the lunch special chicken teriyaki and then the salmon teriyaki. The good: Food is really good. The chicken was juicy and tender with a great flame broiled taste. The portions are large for lunch specials. Delivery is fast, no more than 25-30 mins. Prices are reasonable for UWS as well. The kinda bad: Deliveryman doesn't say thank you for tip. Which is such a pet peeve of mine because I really don't have to tip anything. But a thank you for my gratuity would be appreciated. THE UGLY: I ordered earlier today and was digging into my leftovers. I scooped out some rice onto my plate and I thank my lucky stars I noticed the longest white hair in my rice before I ate it. Be careful with the door as you enter and leave. If you intend to hold the door open for the person behind you, which I sure hope you do, do not let go of the door until you are sure s/he has gotten hold of it. The door is soooooo light and springy it will bounce back so quick once you let go. Could result in a bad case of slamming the door in someone's face. I really really liked the shrimp shumais that came with the bento box. The skin and the shrimp filling were very well integrated. the skin was soft and tender and there were enough shrimp in them that you could noticeably taste. Everything else that came with the box, however, were very mediocre.... On the other hand, the pork Katsu-don was pretty good. I was salivating the moment it came. It is served in a huge bowl and filled generously with rice topped with lots of sauce, pork and fried egg. It really is a big serving and your tummy will leave fully satisfied. After the initial pandemic shut down, they actually texted me to let me know they had reopened (which was good, because I'd missed them!). We usually just get a bunch of basic rolls and miso soup, but other favorites on the menu include the shrimp shumai, the yummy tuna pizza, and the Hot Ninja Roll.
