We chose Momoya for my friend's birthday since she was craving crispy rice, and Momoya has a reputation for serving some of the best in the city. We noticed that pricing varies slightly across their three locations--UWS, SoHo, and Chelsea. We ultimately went with the UWS location because it could accommodate our larger group of eight and is more affordable than SoHo. Although I didn't try the crispy rice myself, everyone else at the table agreed it lived up to the hype. (It's listed under the signature rolls section of the menu if you're looking for it.) For my meal, I shared the spicy scallop roll, the salmon belly truffle roll from the specials menu, and the Momoya spicy yellowtail roll from the signature menu. Everything tasted fresh and satisfying, though I felt the sauces--especially the spicy mayo--tended to overpower the fish. The seared toppings, which are usually a highlight for me, were a little more muted in flavor than expected. The scallop roll had a nice buttery texture, but again, the heavy dose of spicy mayo masked the delicate flavor of the scallops. (To be fair, I generally prefer non-spicy rolls for exactly this reason.) While they were all solid, I probably wouldn't get any of them again. My friend enjoyed her salmon avocado roll, particularly the sesame seed coating, but noted that the salmon portion felt a bit skimpy. To celebrate the occasion, the staff brought out a complimentary scoop of ice cream--green tea, black sesame, or vanilla--with "happy birthday" written on the plate. We went with green tea, which was good, though it did have the slightly bitter aftertaste that green tea ice cream often carries. One thing to note: there's a 20% automatic gratuity for large parties. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and enjoyed the food, but I wouldn't say it's the best value for the price. I'd be more likely to return during Restaurant Week, when the set menu feels like a better deal. Otherwise, I'd consider trying the Chelsea location, where the salmon avocado roll and miso black cod looked especially appealing--and at slightly lower prices. I've also noticed that the third-party apps often offer good delivery deals, so I might try that sometime too. read more

Came here for a treat after asking a friend for a sushi rec on the UWS. Ended up getting the restaurant week dinner special. Got the yellowtail as an appetizer, and the volcano roll and sashimi + the chocolate cake. This sushi is soooo fresh! Around 9:30 it felt like they were trying to get us to leave - taking out trash in the dining room, sweeping, and cleaning surfaces with ammonia so strong I couldn't breathe. We started with the crispy rice spicy tuna and I have had many renditions of this dish, but this was my favorite. The rice wasn't overcooked but was still crispy on the outside and I loved the texture of the spicy tuna on top. You know how people say the specials bodegas offer are made with the meat they need to get rid of before it goes bad? Well, I think that's what we got with the omakase. I love fish, and have truly never been so turned off to sushi in my life. While there is some possibility we just didn't like the random types of fish they gave us, I think it's more likely that this stuff was just not fresh. I've had shrimp ceviche I liked quite a lot, but their raw shrimp sushi was so revolting I took one bite and covered the other half of it. The only good part of the omakase was the fatty salmon, tuna, and specialty roll (yellow tail specialty roll). The only reason I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 was because everything else was good. Aside from the omakase we got miso soup, edamame, and the spicy shrimp. Low quality fish and poor service. Came at around 9pm on a Monday night with a girlfriend and the waiters came around 3-4 times to let me know last call was in 30 minutes. My friend hadn't arrived yet so I was waiting for her to come before we ordered. Then at the end of our meal, the waiters were so obviously eager to clean up our dishes even when we weren't done yet. I understand and respect restaurants for wanting to clean up and close at an appropriate time so they can let their workers go, but as a customer, I don't want to feel rushed. I booked this restaurant for brunch expecting fluffy Japanese pancakes, French toast, and parfaits, only to discover upon arrival that those picturesque, delicious looking brunch options were only available at the SoHo location.
