We had a wonderful time at Sushi Masu! I got the 11 course omakase and my friends got the sashimi and yellowtail plates. No complaints on the fish! The price point and value is great. I do wish they have real wasabi (or at least give the option to add) The night we went we were the only group in there for a good while - I wonder if making reservations easier (no deposit) would help them attract more diners. Overall I recommend this place if you're in the area!

I often search for omakase places in my neighborhood and was quite glad I stumbled into this gem . I gladly sat by the beautiful open bar ( perfect for solo diners) where I enjoyed the sushi pieces served by an entertaining sushi chef . The food is good value for money , simple dishes ( let the fish shine ) , paired with sake . Service was attentive and warm . It'll be on my rotation give the proximity to my apt .

Service: 4.8/5 Food: 4.1/5 Price: $30-$100 Not your typical omakase experience- they don't have set dining times. As such, I feel like it's harder for the chef(s) to manage because parties will be at different stages of their meal. Pretty standard selection, fresh fish + typical toppings. Standout is the freshness of the seaweed for their handrolls. Their 12-course omakase is one of the better deals I've seen. Overall, a very large space with a coat rack, but only 1 bathroom. There's 2 sections, each with a 3-sided counter + additional tables. They play some nice background jazz music. Not very busy on a Saturday afternoon, granted I went the day before a major winter storm. Our chef wearing a black coat was Chinese (most likely Fujianese) + our server was from Hong Kong (found out bc he misheard my friend's accent when asking for the check in Mandarin). Didn't really interact with the owner (white coat) much. I think he mostly just assisted the black coat. The coats remind me of this Korean competition show called Culinary Class Wars.

The food was pretty good and priced pretty cheaply. The fish was pretty good wuality. They also had a nice drink selection. Overall the experience was kind of awkward and this place is run by Chinese and is not authentic Japanese. Would say it's a decent sushi option on uws that's not full.

I rarely get to have omakase in the city so this was a special treat. Apparently this place has been open a year so was surprised that there were such few reviews. My friend frequents this place and is really hopeful they continue to succeed. We did the 16 piece omakase which also came with a dessert. Favorite pieces were the scallop, shrimp and toro. Everything was fresh. We sat at the bar and the sushi chef described each piece. I am a recent lover of uni and only if it is Hokkaido uni, thankfully it was. Reasonable price for omakase especially with the May special. They have some tables and of course seating at the sushi bar for attentive omakase service. We enjoyed so much we asked for an additional scallop piece, not because we were still hungry but because we wanted to end on our favorite. The homemade panna cotta was a refreshing finish. The restaurant gives a quiet vibe and other customers were not noticeable from the bar. Definitely a place to go again when I am back on the upper west side.

I was looking for somewhere that had a sushi omakase style take out. I found people talking about Sushi Masu and their $48 sushi takeout, so I decided to check it out when I was in NY. It is close to Central Park. I spent the morning at The Met and crossed Central Park to get my sushi takeout for lunch. I loved the nigiri that were so elegantly packed! It also included 3 different fish in the sushi rolls. My favorite sushi is Salmon, so I really enjoyed the salmon roll. The takeout was very filling for one person!

The omakase was a great deal and the sushi chef showed a lot of skill behind the counter putting in a wonderful show. The charred fresh prawn was phenomenal. All the pieces were fresh not overpowered by sauce. The fish was the feature.

Extremely disappointed with this omakase experience. For the price point, I expected far better service and ambiance. Unfortunately, the servers were completely inattentive--no one checked in to see if we needed anything, not even water refills, despite the restaurant having no AC. It was uncomfortably warm, and to make matters worse, they brought out loud industrial fans that totally ruined the atmosphere. If the AC isn't running correctly, at least check in with guests and refresh their water with ice every 10-15 minutes. Matter of fact, they didn't at least say something like " oh sorry for the inconvenience, our air conditioning is etc etc etc". Nothing . There were only two chefs--one clearly experienced, the other obviously still learning. The food was fine, but far from exceptional. The whole experience felt more like a casual sushi spot pretending to be a high-end omakase restaurant. What really ruined the night was the service--especially one server (possibly the owner) who had a terrible attitude. No smile, no engagement--just cold and dismissive, like she was doing us a favor. If you're charging premium prices, you need to provide at least basic hospitality. And honestly, not even being able to pour a beer correctly? That was the final straw. It's the little things, and they got all of them wrong. In the end, this place is all presentation with no substance. I won't be back and don't recommend it to anyone looking for a real omakase experience. Just another FJ sushi spot, IYKYK.

I came here on a Wednesday night, counter service for 4 at 7pm to take advantage of their fall omakase special. 16 courses for $88 It was so so good. The fish was buttery, fresh and such great flavor. There were different combinations of toppings and that made this omakase unique. We got to know the chef and he was able to explain that we were lucky enough to get specific sweet shrimp that was only in season for a little longer or what his favorite course was (scallop) (Tip: always sit at the counter and befriend the chef, they have great insight!) We also ordered a few extra pieces before dessert and the chef recommended the tuna neck and it was AMAZING. I'll be dreaming of that bite for a while We also ordered multiple cocktails (lychee martini and peach cocktail) and sake which were also delicious! The restaurant was not completely packed, ambiance was nice and the service was very attentive to empty water glasses or low in ginger.

Really great value! We enjoyed all the sushi we got and the dessert. Fish quality seemed good. They didn't have a liquor license yet or have BYOB but hopefully soon.

10/10 - A Hidden Gem Worth Obsessing Over! Sushi Masu completely blew me away. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was intimate and elevated--lowkey but stylish, like a secret you almost don't want to share. We did the omakase, and it was perfect. Every single piece of fish was incredibly fresh--melt-in-your-mouth quality. The chef was not only skilled but also kind and approachable, which made the experience feel personal and welcoming. Special shoutout to Lin, who took the service to another level. Attentive, warm, and genuinely enthusiastic--she made us feel taken care of from start to finish. Sushi Masu is hands-down one of the best sushi spots I've been to in NYC, and I've tried a lot. It's officially earned a spot on my regular rotation. 10/10 recommend. Hidden gem on the Upper West Side.

Unexciting omakase. Pieces were average sized and not very creative in taste or presentation. $300+ for mediocre sushi and sake.

The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. The entrees provide a substantial amount of food, and I especially appreciate that they allow you to choose which roll comes with your meal.
