Ordered the lunch special two rolls for $9.95 plus salad/miso soup, except we didn't receive the miso soup. The rolls were made to order so the sweet potato roll was fresh and crispy. Very interesting place that reminds me of a movie. Very much a green hole in the wall with an antiquated interior that cuts to the chase. Staff is attentive and food is made to order. Miso Soup was a 2 out of 10 (how does anyone screw up Miso Soup?). Hand roll and specialty roll I ordered, absolute garbage. Wouldn't feed it to a dog. 1 bite of each and threw it out. Dumplings were equivalent to gas station food. Powdered dollar store quality wasabi. Old half dried out ginger. Seaweed salad is better from Costco. Nothing was fresh, the rice was not sushi rice, this might be the worst sushi spot in NYC, OR maybe I'm just use to better quality sushi. Prices are average, I'd say overall a decent place for sushi although I could not attest to how fresh the sashimi is as I did not have any. I do wish it was a little cooler inside, maybe their air conditioning was broken. The waitress did not automatically bring us any water to drink, and there was a child sleeping on the bar stools up front, but then again we were the only people in there so the waitress and staff were probably not at the top of their game. And besides, most sushi bars around NYC are a bit pricey, but with $10 here you can get a decent meal. I recently 'got into' sushi back in March so take this as you will. I had a Shrimp Tempura Roll and a NY Roll. Combining the decent service, reasonable(for the area) pricing and the NY Roll, I'd have given Sushi 21 3 stars. I'm detracting a star, however for the not-so-great presentation of the Shrimp Tempura. If I'm eating Shrimp Tempura by the piece I won't mind biting the shrimp off the tail, but I'm thinking a roll would go better without the tail. I shouldn't have to deconstruct a roll to eat it. Overall, I'd go back; the place is clean if a bit cramped and with the crowd I'd say they have regulars so they must be doing something right, but the Shrimp Tempura isn't it. read more
