Note- Rating is for the area and for the good lunch special I have been to this popular Japanese sushi place a handful of times for lunch during my work break. The first time, I had an easy and quick experience as it wasn't overly crowded, but the second time, it took a bit too long. The staff was still friendly both times and apologized for how long it took, which was much appreciated, with me also getting my check the second time while eating. Compared to the other local, presumably Chinese-owned sushi places, I find it better than the closest place, Oishi Bay, which has definitely had a big downfall over the last year or two. The sushi quality in general is better here, and the deal is better as it comes with soup and salad. It is a bit worse than Blue Mountain Sushi, which is several avenues away, but that is also a bit more expensive and has some more options. The main gimmick here for lunch is that, along with the soup and salad, there is a combo menu, which also comes with two miniature appetizers. At $21.95, it is $4 more than their regular lunch special, or $18.95 compared to $14.95 for 2 rolls, and it is a good deal if you're looking for something very filling. For both times, the miso soup and salad are your standard, though I will say that the salad from the two times I have been didn't have wilted lettuce like at Oishi. My lunch apps the first time were the Chicken Kushiyaki/Grilled Skewers, and a generic/tasty Seaweed/Wakame Salad. The kushiyaki was particularly good as it had a teriyaki-like glaze with a mild sweetness, and I appreciated that there were some mushrooms and grilled onions on the skewer as well. In terms of makizushi/rolls, the first time I had yellowtail scallion, salmon, and eel cucumber. The second time, I had the yellowtail scallion again, along with tuna and spicy salmon. The fish quality is pretty standard, with my favorite being the plain tuna, salmon, and yellowtail scallion. All were decent, with my least favorite probably being the eel cucumber. If I want something a bit healthier next time, and as I like the tuna, I might try the tasty-looking Yaki Tuna Salad. This is a perfectly decent sushi place. It's not the best, but it gets the job done, and they have a nice deal with friendly service. read more

Really enjoyed my experience at Hane Sushi. The restaurant was very nice and clean, and the outdoor space was spacious so you didn't feel packed on top of other people. Our server was very kind and attentive throughout the meal. We started with the sweet potato tempura roll with soy paper, and also got the shrimp tempura roll with cucumber instead of avocado and asparagus, plus tails removed. Everything was really good. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the sauce on the shrimp tempura roll, but next time I'd definitely substitute eel sauce instead. I also got the chicken teriyaki which was delicious- no weird or fatty pieces at all. One thing I really appreciated was that they give you your own water pitcher at the table, which I always love at restaurants. Would definitely come back. read more

Great neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Nice indoor ambience, especially since renovations, large bar, and outdoor dining -weather permitting. The menu varies from sushi/sushi bar to simple dishes like broiled salmon. Not ultra- Japanese cuisine( exotic or rare specialities), but excellent Japanese food that most Americans would love to eat! The service is excellent and very gracious. Solid dinner with my friend recently! It was a bit busy on a Thursday evening but we were able to walk in with no wait. We shared a couple appetizers, along with the chicken teriyaki and the vegetable soba noodles. Would say for me the highlights were the chicken teriyaki (very generous portion of meat for the price, and cooked perfectly. Wish i got a picture!) and the pork gyoza (a classic!). Walked by this place so many times and finally got to try it with my family. The place is cozy with a modern decor. There wasn't too many tables and our server was friendly and attentive. We just got back from Japan but clearly didn't have enough sushi so we decided to try this fusion spot. We ordered a mix of dishes and sushi and enjoyed everything. Great sushi spot they have a ton of specialty rolls but I knew exactly what I wanted and that was the Crispy Eel. Absolute flames I loved that roll so much, but also got some classics: salmon avocado and spicy tuna which were nice. Had an XXL Sapporo that was much needed too. read more

3.5 stars. This Asian fusion spot served up some surprises- pretty interesting American style sushi along with appetizers. Service is fairly fast and does the job. Not overly friendly but all good. We've tried the crispy rice appetizer (Tango Tuna) topped with spicy tuna and a fruity sauce- my feedback to the restaurant is that they instead serve the fruity sauce on the side because it really overpowers the rice/tuna. Check out the "Japan Pizza" too. For the sushi, we tried the Sesame Crust Tuna, Chilean Sea Bass Special Roll and the Truffle Soy Otoro Roll. I've never had such elaborate rolls, and they go all out- I liked these fusion rolls a lot more than I thought (and I'm usually a traditionalist snob!) Some reviews noted that the fish quality was poor, but I didn't get that sense at all. The tempura, however, was not great- stick with the sushi. read more

Hane Sushi keeping it Ok! . This local Sushi spot to the stuytown/pcv area is perfectly mediocre food wise. If you are looking for a beautiful ambience, large indoor seating for a large group, lots of outdoor seating for a large group, have a dog for outdoor seating, this is your spot as there aren't many restaurants in the area that offer this amount of space especially for Asian food. The service here is fast, some servers do have a bit of a bad attitude, food is fine if you eat at the restaurant. For the price the food quality is pretty low and not very fresh the Sushi can sometimes taste spoiled, especially when ordered for takeout. When ordering takeout the food has been consistently bad and they always forget items. I would only suggest eating at the restaurant. Took a chance on an unfamiliar part of town, to have some sushi and was pleasantly surprised to have had my expectations exceeded! . For started, this restaurant closes mid day between 3:30pm -5pm. I arrived around 5pm and they opened promptly. Although today was fitting for they're outdoor dining area, I decided to dine inside at the bar . The staff from beginning to end were very friendly and welcoming , as the bartender did assist in helping me decide on a drink. I ordered the Miso soup, beef short rib appetizer, the pork gyoza, a California roll, and rice . THE FOOD WAS SLAMMING!!!! Everything came out in layers which I really appreciated ( soup, sushi rolls &dumplings, then rice and short rib) . The sushi was fresh and the short rib was sssssoooo tender! Pork dumplings and soup really hit the spot as well . For my drink I got the lychee and yuzu marg. It was happy hour so it was BOGO . The ambience was really nice too. We went on a Saturday afternoon for a b-day lunch celebration for my aunt. Hane had a lunch special which I ordered the vegetable soba. It also comes w/ soup and salad. The rest of my family liked their entrees but esp. the dessert which was both the fried green tea and fried choco ice creams. The waitresses and server were kind. The ambiance is nice and the staff is friendly. We haven't been here since they remodeled and it is a step up from what it used to be, with a small bar area. The lunch specials are a great deal for the money. The lunch special included miso soup, salad, and two appetizers of your choice. The fish katsu was excellent with fresh crispy fried fish and a delicious dipping sauce. The chicken teriyaki was good, it was a very big portion and the cooked vegetables in teriyaki sauce were very good. Dropped in for last minute sushi craving. Had my dog with us and the restaurant was super nice about setting out a small container of water on the patio by our table without us asking. Service was a little rushed - our server asked us no less than 5 times in 10 minutes if we were ready to order, but otherwise no complaints. Food came out quickly but still appropriately paced between our salad and the rolls. The menu is large and diverse with tons of options for rolls. Tried three different ones (spicy kani, monkey jump, crispy eel) and a seaweed salad split between two people which was a good amount of food. Rolls were large, unique, and really good. I've walked by Hane for years but never had their food, so finally ordered lunch just to check them out. Ahahahahahaha, what a mistake! I ordered a chirashi lunch, which I often get from other sushi places. I should've been suspicious when their online menu didn't state the number of pieces of fish you get (many places state how many pieces come in a dish). Wow, I got 6 as in SIX small pieces! Two pieces of tuna, white fish, and salmon each. And some tobiko to fill the space of the container. No eggs, no octopus, no yellowtail, or anything else you would expect. This was no way a churashi or any decent lunch meal from a place that makes business selling sushi. I'm Japanese from Japan, but I'm also a New Yorker so I try to set reasonable expectations for local joints, but this left me completely flabbergasted. I don't eat much but this left me still hungry and feeling I was totally scammed. Also their miso soup (which isn't hard to make it decent) had this weird taste that doesn't come from typical miso. Perfect for groups and late nights. There's Usually no wait because the place has plenty of seating. Great service and lovely culinary presentation. My partner and I usually end up here since it's close to his place. Every time my partner and I come here we order the sushi deluxe sets and the presentation has always been beautiful. O.k. - Great. The food is good at Hane Sushi. But... The service leaves a LOT to be desired. My daughter and I decided to go - again (we've been many times) because it was a nice night, and we thought it'd be nice to sit outside, if we could get an outside table. We did. Now I was starting to get extremely annoyed. O.k., let's say - angry. Why hasn't anyone at least even GREETED us - to just ask if we'd like a drink? Nothing. O.k. - so now I have to get up and ask the hostess if anyone might mind actually coming over to our table. 'Of course' was the obvious thing to say. Then I had to voice a bit of my annoyance. As I was doing that, one of the waitresses saw the commotion I imagine, and started coming over (finally) to our table. I voiced my annoyance to her as well. Another waitress came over, I guess because of the slight commotion I was causing, because I was raising my voice a bit at how long (20 minutes) it had been. Have only ordered for delivery so far. Will update after dining in. I placed an order for unagi Don buri around 9pm on Saturday. It arrived well within the estimated window, was hot, and delicious! It came with a miso soup which I drank promptly. The broiled eel was perfectly tender, deliciously sauced, and served on top of perfectly fluffy rice. I did not recognize the vegetable between the eel and rice, but I ate all of it. The Japanese pickles were a nice compliment to the broiled eel, and the cucumbers were refreshing afterwards. 10/10 will order again. Also plenty of sushi options for me to try later! read more

Gyoza dumplings were not bad, but honestly not worth the price. The waitress was quite rude. She placed dishes very roughly on the table. But the annoying part was that she kept asking if I was done with the dish and took it away immediately. The dishes were not even clean. I've been going here for years since I was a kid. There has been several remodels of the same restaurant, mind you that make me feel this restaurant is pretty lost in its identity. Nonetheless, the food is always solid but makes me run to the bathroom so that isn't really nice. This place is at the corner of Stuytown so location was super convenient for us! It's a big restaurant with lots of outdoor dining. They use fake plants to decorate the space and it's very cute. The menu was a little confusing, but we ordered and were served pretty quickly. Didn't take a photo, but we had miso soup, salad, agedashi tofu and pumpkin tempura (last two are part of the Combination Maki Lunch). The tofu and tempera were fried only once, and both were pretty underwhelming in flavor and texture. The sauce was not as flavorful as others that I have had. The sashimi and sushi were average. It was akin to Safeway/grocery market sushi, but not frozen. Sashimi was alright as well. The lunch totaled to about $40, including tax and tip, for two, so I'm not really complaining. We were both really full, and the service was good. I would say come here if you really just want something cheap and easy, not if you're looking for good Japanese food necessarily.
