This was a very solid sushi place and somewhere I'd def go again for the lunch detail or for takeout. The fish was really fresh as was the nori. I enjoyed the scallop a lot. I found the salmon was a bit grisly which was a little disappointing. The ikura was great. Our server was kind but was the only person working all of the tables so it did take a little while. Went to Mikado last night on a recommendation that it's affordable and good quality and I can agree! We sat down at 6:29 PM and happy hour ended at 630. We ordered at 6:32 and they let us order of of happy hour! The sushi was really good. We got four rolls and they were all delicious and from the happy hour menu! The service was super fast and attentive cleaning off the tables. We had no reservation and sat down immediately and was completely done with the meal in about 50 minutes. The drinks on the other hand were not worth the money. It felt like I was in college again drinking straight alcohol, terrible quality mixed drinks. Place inside was cute and clean. Newest Mikado location and honestly it's such a beautiful interior. I'd have a cute date or birthday here because the ambiance is super elevated. The lunch special is every day from 11AM - 3:30PM and then happy hour from 3:30 - 6:30PM. There's some really decent sets for lunch for under $27, and happy hour is amazing with $1 edamame and $5 sushi tacos, and cocktails for $7 and beer and wine for $3-5! They have 25% off all dine in and pickup orders from March 2 - 15! Such a good deal and good addition to the area. The servers are so sweet and running around but so efficient! read more

I have mixed feelings about my recent takeout order from Mikado. I was really excited about the sushi, and on the positive side, the rolls were delicious. I ordered the salmon avocado roll, salmon roll, eel avocado roll, and shrimp tempura roll, which arrived nicely packed in a pink box, The flavor profile was spot-on, the fish felt fresh, and the spicy mayo was a great addition. However, the meal was significantly affected by two major quality control issues that were hard to overlook. First, while eating one of the salmon rolls, I bit directly onto a bone. You can see the small bone I pulled out. This was a real turn-off and quite a surprise. Second, when I started the shrimp tempura roll, I encountered another issue. Although the tail section of the tempura shrimp had been removed, there was still a significant amount of hard shell left on the main body. The small piece of shell I pulled out is visible in my other photo It resulted in several unpleasant and unexpected crunches. It's a shame, as the actual taste of the sushi was excellent, but having to navigate both a fish bone and leftover shrimp shell within the same meal made for a stressful eating experience. I'm giving this three stars because the flavors were so good, but the preparation needs significant improvement. read more

Glad we got to try this new UWS sushi spot! We visited on a Saturday around 7p and it was busy but we were able to get seated immediately for a table for 2. Upon entry, you are greeted by 4 helmet-clad doordash delivery drivers sprawled out on the tables closest to the entrance. There is no music playing - but no need, there is a choir of delivery phones pinging notifications and playing videos. You are pointed to a table by a busy waitress. You sink into the unnatural fake leather (likely vinyl) booths. It is already heating up nicely. You soak in the Amazon decor: fake plastic plants, MDF material furniture...it's timeless. There is a vast empty bar to your right. You look for the sushi chef and then realize the sushi is being discretely prepared behind closed doors in a hot kitchen. There is no fish on display, no visible sushi chefs, but you blissfully imagine a trained sushi professional is working on a raw-friendly section of the shared kitchen with quality fish that Mikado is proud to serve. A brief trip to the bathroom, and - oh yeah - this is on par with a modern airbnb: stylish, plastic, uneven door frames (give it a good pull!), and crooked faucets. And then, the sushi makes its trip from the sea, to the kitchen, and lands on your plate. And it is perfect. Please take a close look at this simple sushi-grade tuna roll the kitchen prepared for me - meaty, gristly, chock full of connective tissue, messy...just like nature intended. Beautiful new restaurant and nice addition to 72nd St. The Sushi was literally the best I have had on the UWS. Large pieces and very fresh beautifully presented in a lovely box that looks very high end. Nicest presentation I have seen for take out Sushi. Also very reasonably priced for the large size and high quality sushi. My go to Sushi restaurant on UWS had been the usually excellent Tenzan but Mikado is even better. And also looks like a very nice place to dine in. I believe the space before wasn't even a restaurant so they must have spent a fortune converting the space. Unfortunately the dreaded plague of NY scaffolding has gone up around the building so it's now hard to see. Such a shame as its a beautiful restaurant inside and outside. read more

On 2/26 I visited Mikado around 2 PM. The restaurant was pretty much empty. There was one waitress and no bartender. I sat at a comfortable table. I ordered sake, which was good and the make roll set, which encompassed eel avocado, salmon ikura, scallop yuzu, and yellowtail scallion rolls, plus miso soup. I also had for dessert red bean ice cream. These were open rolls and the fish was fresh, but I much prefer rolls where the seaweed wraps all around. I also found it strange that the seaweed was wrapped in plastic. I had to first eat the fish and then unwrap the seaweed in order to eat it. The service was fine, but the waitress seemed to be new and just learning her job. I may return, but probably not - other options in the neighborhood. read more
