I was a big fan of the Fish Shack until after a recent visit, but now I have changed my opinion. The bottom line is there is better out there. That being said, I like the restaurant because the menu has many of my favorites on it but most of it isn't prepared well. The New England Clam Chowder was abysmal with no clams in it, much better chowder at Kelly's Landing or Brighton Beach Seafood. The same with Fried Whole clams that came out looking like they were undercooked as they were not brown, also much better at Kelly's Landing or Brighton Beach Seafood. Steamed shrimp in Old Bay were undercooked with some Old Bay seasoning sprinkled on top, not steamed in Old Bay. The best thing about the Fish Shack is the beautiful salad they have that can be ordered as a side dish with the platters. Grilled scallops in garlic butter were wonderful. On the other hand, the fish dishes are not all great and lacking something. The fish may be fresh, but it is bland or dry. Moreover, if you ask for tartar or cocktail sauce you are given a small container with maybe (if you are lucky) two tablespoons in it, hardly enough for a large filet or plate of shrimp, and if you want more you are charged. It is only .25 cents, but it comes off as extremely cheap and chinsey. I spent $108.00 (before tip) on dinner, and they still charged me for additional cocktail sauce. The Key Lime pie is small but good. If you go, the best item I have had there was the grilled scallops in garlic butter. My dining companion loved the cracked conch. Grilled Hog Fish was bland and mediocre at best. Grilled Mahi was dull and unexciting. The Fish Shack has what you want on the menu, the problem is that it lacks the wow factor which is immediately apparent after the first bite on a lot of their menu items. read more

Best fish in all of Broward County. This is our second visit. I ordered the grilled grouper sandwich again, and it was perfect. This time I tried the cole slaw. It was okay. It had a gritty taste, I think maybe too much celery seed? I don't know, but I won't order it again. Wife ordered the blackened mahi mahi. I ate the leftovers four days later and was pleasantly surprised about how good it still was. The fries were decent. Not crack fries or with any special seasoning, but they were hot and fresh. I will bring every guest that visits my home here. I love this place. My buddy picked up the bill, but I think it was $55 for the three of us to eat amazing fresh fish. Not too shabby. Nothing fancy. Just good food, friendly environment, great service and good prices. We knew nothing about this restaurant but we were in the area and hungry. We had lobster bisque, New England Clam Chowder, lobster tails (one grilled and one fried--delicious!) served with fried onion rings and coleslaw and fried clam strips. Hands down, some of the best seafood I've ever had, possibly the best, in a little hole in the wall! I of course found this place by yelp, otherwise it's almost impossible to find. GPS got us close, but he had to turn another corner or two to actually find it. From the pictures online, I knew it was a hole-in-the-wall and didn't expect much on the exterior, and I wasn't surprised with what it actually was. I wouldn't call the cramped parking lot a great neighborhood, but it's somewhere in between good and bad. 1 homeless, and a few sketchy people frequenting the beer and lotto grocery store next door, but overall nobody obnoxious and to be fair, "Fish Shack" had more lurkers outside, at one point 10 of us were waiting outside for a table. We waited about 20 minutes for a table, and got lucky we were sat an an actual table which we prefer over a bar stool. (The whole restaurant has about 4 tables, and maybe 10 bar stools, but they do quick service and it's worth it). On to the food, Simply out of this world. We started with something I've never had before but would highly recommend, Cracked Conch. It tastes like a mixture of fried clam strips, and fried calamari. It's a little chewy with a good similar taste. A generous portion is served with an awesome tasting sauce. Perfectly seasoned and flavored! We shared 2 entrees: Fish & chips with fries and rice. Grilled Combo with fries and cole slaw The Grilled Combo included a dollar-bill sized mahi mahi, 4 large scallops, 4 large shrimp, and generous sizes of the sides along with tartar sauce. Everything was seasoned and grilled to perfection. Hands down the best scallops I've had, the shrimp tasted amazing for being plain, and the mahi as well was just perfect. The Fish & Chips also was a great deal for the money. Usually, fish & chips is a very thick-battered deep fried mess, but these were 99% meat, 1% breading, and tasted a lot healthier than other fish and chips. I didn't hate myself after eating some. Their fries were fries and the rice was a little dry but a great combo with all of the seafood. The cole slaw appeared home made and tasted very good! We definitely over-bought, and have tons of left overs. If I went back I'm not sure if I would buy less simply because it's fun to try a variety of foods, but if just 2 of you go, you don't need an appetizer and 2 entrees, I'd limit it to a combo of 2 or you'll have plenty of leftovers. Service was really great! For such a small cramped place with everyone eating at the same time, the chefs appeared happy, and the 2 awesome servers were tag-teaming everyone to keep them happy. One took our order, the other brought us drinks, they both kept checking on us. One asked of for boxes, and the other brought them to us because she overheard the convo. Really a nice setup where they share responsibility and are happy, instead of "well if they're tipping just you, just you can help them" like you see in a lot of places. It's a very cute place with a low class exterior with a bubbly interior that they put some work into. It's very popular, expect to wait on the weekends, but it's worth it! I've never heard of this place before and strongly suggest anyone else who hasn't, to get out to pompano and give it a shot too. read more

Another home run meal from this gem of a find! I am always drawn to the conch, and I haven't been Disappointed yet. Tons of goodness means more for tomorrow (so I'm not complaining).Don't expect a fancy place, but DO expect good food and being surrounded with others who love to eat fresh seafood. We went here with our daughter and son-in -law who loved it before. We had no idea what to get so server made a suggestion of the grouper to my husband. The food our kids ordered was a big amount , grouper fingers, So heres what my husband was served...a piece and 1/2 of the fish with a wedge of lemon That was it, nothing else on the plate. He said no fries but thought he'd get rice with it. Nothing not even a bread roll. 2 sides came with it which was cold slaw and a small bowl of salad. I asked if it had tomatoes it in and server said Yes. I then said No croutons. When she set it down it had croutons and No tomatos. She brought a cut up slice of a tomato. I usually share big meals with my husband but this so was very small. I ate the salad,he ate the cold slaw, my daughter shared her grouper fingers with me, I was still hungry and my husband was too. We got the bill and his fish on a plate with the 2 sides was over $23. Plus he had lemonade for $2.99. This is not a fancy place, it is suppose to have great food. Don't go by the strip mall setting this place is a awesome south Florida seafood joint. You can't go wrong with any of the daily catch fish entrees. Yesterday the fresh catch was Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Yellowfin Tuna, Hogfish, and Wahoo. They had Swordfish earlier but it sold out. My Mom told me years ago that if you are in S. Florida and you see Hogfish on the menu don't pass it up. So my wife an I both ordered it and weren't disappointed! She got it blackened and since it was my birthday I got it fried. For sides we got beer battered onion rings, cucumber salad and French fries. To finish it off for desert we had excellent Key Lime Pie with REAL whipped cream. Yum! Don't miss this one! Fantastic! At first we were concerned by the outward appearance. This soon changed with the great food and friendly service. We started with the smoked fish dip. I ordered the blackened Mahi Mahi with a side salad and rice and finished with key lime pie. The smoked fish dip was very good, not too strong. This was the BEST Mahi Mahi I've ever had! I've wanted to try the Fish Shack forever, but previous attempts have been foiled by the wait time; however, this past Friday we had a little over two hours before our movie started down the street, so I figured that had to be enough time to finally give Fish Shack a try. We arrived around 8pm on a Friday evening. It was crowded, no surprise. I went in and put my name in with the waitress then stepped outside. There really isn't any room to wait inside, it is a shack after all, so maybe don't come on a chilly night. Many people actually pull up their SUV's and trucks and have a makeshift tailgate as they wait (there's a convenience store next door if you want to grab a cocktail ;-) ). Maybe it was because I had mentally prepared myself, but I didn't think the wait was too bad at all. I finished one glass of wine in the parking lot (lol) and our name was called. We sat at the bar where the waitresses were quick to replenish our drinks and took our order quickly. I wanted everything on the menu, but I exercised restraint. To start we ordered the buffalo shrimp and the conch fritters. The buffalo shrimp were delicious...huge, perfectly cooked with a lightly fried outside, and the spice level of the medium was perfect for me. The conch fritters were the one somewhat disappointing aspect of the meal. I thought the insides were a little too doughy and a little underdone, and that's when I saw the people next to us receive their order of cracked conch. The cracked conch looked sooo good...I blame the parking lot wine for my lapse in judgement choosing the conch fritters over that, now I know. For my meal I ordered the special which this night happened to be hog fish. You are given the option of many different cooking methods and I went with the garlic butter style. This was some of the best fish I've ever had. My boyfriend got the grouper and was equally as happy, though he only got his grilled, no garlic butter. I don't know why you would ever skip garlic butter. Each entree comes with two sides and between us we had the coleslaw, fries, and side salad. The entree portions are huge so we were able to save the salad and a good amount of fish for a snack later that evening. Normally, I hate waiting for food, but with this being such a small place the wait here is kind of part of the atmosphere. You enjoy a cocktail outside and chat with others....and the wait was worth the food for sure. We spent less than $100 for a seafood dinner for 2 with appetizers and drinks...oh and we also took a piece of key lime pie to go to eat during our movie. I wouldn't suggest coming here if you're starving and need to eat right away, but if you don't mind hanging around for a half hour or so Fish Shack does not disappoint. read more

Executive summary: A hole in the wall with excellent seafood and friendly customer service. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door. It wasn't too busy in the mid-afternoon during the week, but there were a few other customers there, all of whom appeared to be regulars. I ordered the conch fritters and the fried Ipswich clams. They were both very good, although the batter for the clams lacked some seasoning. Everything was nice and crispy on the outside, so it's pretty clear their cook knows how to work the fryer. Few months ago I was craving seafood. I went to yelp for help I wanted to know where the best seafood was. When Dan and several others Refereed Fish shack I quickly bookmarked it like any good yelper and thank god for this feature. I used to constantly forget about places that I wanted to try If it wasn't for the bookmark feature I would forgotten about Fish Shack. I was looking for a place to eat last week and started looking through my bookmark section on yelp and I came across Fish Shack. I knew I had to go and see if the hype was real. If you're not familiar with the area you would think you're pulling up to a residential neighborhood. It is tucked away from the main roads. The parking lot is very small they only have a few spots designated for the restaurant. There are signs up saying if you park in other business spots your car will be towed so make sure you park in the designated parking for Fish Shack. There was 6 people waiting outside and 3 inside, so I assume the wait was going to be over 30 mins, but the waitress/hostess assured me it would only be 20mins. I had some time to kill so I decided to check in. Yelp notified me another yelper was there eating (another cool feature); it was my first time running into one of my yelp friends while out eating. It was really nice meeting Vincent and his family. Don't judge this place by the way it looks on the outside or inside ; just sit and try the food. You will not be disappointed. This place is a gem! I ordered the baked fish platter and everything on my plate was on point! Usually when you get a seafood platter, the fish might be perfect and everything else average or vice versa. Not in this one! Everything was cooked perfectly and the Mahi-mahi had great flavor and was extremely tender. I didn't even need to use to homemade tartar sauce they had on the table. I've been here numerous times and it's always crowded. You won't get gourmet plating or super complex dishes here, but what they lack in innovation they make up for in flavor and freshness of food. The fish is insanely fresh and the portions are large too. Fish will be cooked with your basic styles, grilled, Cajun, fried, pan sautéed, etc. Minimal offerings for sides too but it doesn't really matter because the fish is that good. I always get their oysters as they are always fresh and always delicious, and their cracked conch is to die for. They have two types of wine, red or white and 3 beers. Bud, BudLite, and Miller (if I remember correctly) but that too, doesn't matter because people come here for the fresh fish. It really is excellent. They do a large amount of take out orders and the place is always packed. Getting there early is always a good idea so you can get a table. The place is tiny too, so when it's crowded it's cramped in there. Service has always been great and the ladies that have served me are fast and efficient, they know what's good on the menu too so asking their advice always yields a great meal. If you want insanely fresh fish, that isn't bogged down with overly complex offerings. I suggest giving this place a try. It's a hit with all the locals, including myself read more

The fish portion was huge and cooked to perfection. The best part about the fish was that it was super fresh. The Space: The fish shack has white walls, four tables, and a few stools at the bar. People wait outside to get a table to experience this authentic fresh fish joint. Location: The location of the Fish Shack makes it even more fun to experience. It's out of the way from any place you would think a good restaurant would be. People say it's hard to find, but it's not. Just fire up Google Maps or your GPS, put in the address, and you'll find it. If you hate waiting, the waitress recommends showing up on a Tuesday or Wednesday for easier seating. If you go on a weekend day get there early otherwise you'll have to wait a to get a seat. Super good teamwork and very good service. It was Saturday early lunch and it was jumping. Full house. We ordered fried oysters and cracked conch as appetizers. The oysters were plump and nice deep fried with a lite mild breading succulent with a little salt and lemon or dipped in cocktail sauce. I'm a cracked conch fanatic. This conch was wonderful. Generous portion breaded and fried to perfection. Nice and tender very mellow flavor. Loved it!!! Very tasty house made sauce. My wife had lobster bisque and enjoyed it pretty decent amount of lobster but chopped very small/ blended to a smooth consistency.I had a wahoo sandwich which was a fresh fish on their menu board. Also available that day cobia , yellowfin tuna,wahoo, mahi plus all the regular shrimp, cod , everything anything. My wahoo was grilled to a turn. Brushed w butter with nice herb dusting. Served on fresh burger bun lettuce, tomato and onion with house tarter sauce on the side. Sooo goood!!! The wahoo was very tender and with the fresh let,Tom,on on point. You may live in or near Pompano Beach and not even know the Fish Shack exists, as did my friends I was staying with. Good thing they had a Yelper like me on hand! ; ) Talk about an odd location! This place is literally a hidden gem. I mean the strip mall faces the opposite direction of Federal Hwy, but it is well worth going in a block and finding. Seriously, find it! Everything here is good and you will surely not be disappointed. I love places like this; small, quaint, and gosh darn good food. The Fish Shack has about 6 tables total, and a small bar to sit at. They have $1.50 drafts, which were only Bud and Bud Light when I was there, but at $1.50 a pop, you can't really complain about selection. You cannot go wrong with lobster bisque & clam chowder to start off with. The smoked fish dip was more fish & less filler, yum. All the fish is fresh, never frozen. I chose the Yellowfin Tuna sandwich (on special), with the Cajun seasoning, which added great taste. The sandwich came with a large piece of rare tuna that melted in my mouth. "Please, sir, I want some more." My only regret was saving The Fish Shack for my last night in Florida, because I would of loved to dine here again and try some more items. Wow!!! Small place in an odd location but that didn't keep the place from being packed. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated at the counter. Started of with some medium buffalo shrimp that were probably the best I've ever had. Cracked conch was definitely the best I've had :) For the meal I went with the Garlic butter mahi mahi, fries and a side salad. It was loaded with butter, probably not the best choice for me but I got what I asked for. Still very good. The girlfriend went with breaded medium wings that were also delicious. Nice and crispy on the outside but super juicy and tender on the inside. I'll certainly be recommending this place to some friends. read more
