Specials board 2026
Danielle M.

We have dined at Calypso's many times, so I don't know why I have failed to write a Yelp review until now. Better late than never! I guess with my history of coming here, I can absolutely say this is one of the best fish restaurants in Broward. There are a large variety of choices on their standard menu, but you have to check their specials menu posted on the wall to see their limited time offerings. On the specials menu, I was intrigued by the swordfish schnitzel. As someone who only eats fish and seafood, schnitzel is not something I can have. I decided to be somewhat daring and go with the unknown. Our lovely waitress, who was very helpful and attentive, assured me that many of their patrons really enjoyed the dish. I have to say it's been a couple of weeks since I had it, and this dish is still on my mind. It was so delicious in that comfort food kind of way. I only wish that this was something on their regular menu and hope maybe the chef will see if this request. (Hint hint!!) My husband ordered the scallops off the regular menu which came with his choice of side. He said they were fresh and seasoned perfectly. He also enjoyed the pepperpot soup, a type of soup he's never had before. Calypso is usually quite busy. It is open for both lunch and dinner. I know at lunchtime they have a lot of great specials. The decor inside is very Florida and beachy. It's located in a strip mall, and it's usually not a hard time finding a parking spot.

5/5 Stars Back at one of my favorite local Pompano Beach spots, and once again, Calypso did not disappoint! We had a fantastic server named Jodi who took great care of us. We decided to stick with the daily specials and started by sharing the Bang Bang Shrimp--absolutely delicious! I also had a side salad with their amazing homemade ginger dressing (seriously, it's a must-try). For the main course, our family sampled a bit of everything. The grilled wahoo fish sandwich was cooked just right and tasted great. Another person at the table had the house dinner salad with grilled shrimp, which paired perfectly with that ginger dressing. I went with the French Onion Mussels, and they were incredible! It's like a French onion soup but with mussels, served with crispy bread and melted cheese. It was such a delicious and unique combination--I highly recommend it! Another great dinner in the books. This place remains one of my absolute Pompano favorites!

First and foremost Allison was amazing. I asked a million questions and she was on point with everything and gave her recommendations. My friend comes here frequently and has raved about it for 8 years. He says it's the most consistent restaurant that always given great service and even better food. They had the hog fish cutter sandwich. It was amazing. Definitely the right spice for jerk. I don't know what I wanted, there were so many amazing options on the menu. I will definitely be back to try everything else. I also got the mango salsa which was so great. And the pigeon rice and peas were on point! I am pleasantly surprised You can pick any fish and get it any way you want done, Cajun, fried, blackened, jerk etc. which I think is pretty cool. Free parking! It's nice divy restaurant vibe. I will definitely be back to try everything else.

This place redeemed me for south Florida seafood...actually any seafood within the United States! Work is this place a hidden miracle. Please look at the photos and know the food is beyond belief divine. Force yourself to order the Fish Dip and thank the kitchen gods after your first bite. Each entree was so fresh, cooked perfectly and the sides are not sleeping either. Last advice: order the Double Coconut Pie, even if it's to go. Life changing.

Greeted and seated very quickly. The restaurant has a nautical vibe with dock-themed decorations. My shrimp and scallop burger (I've never had one so I wasn't sure...) I could taste the shrimp and the scallops... blended into a nice patty the screamed Yummy! To my tastebuds. The potato salad brought me back down memory lane to a family cookout... it was perfect--didn't come from a lame super market The carrot cake was quite good, I like mine a little moister. I'll be back to try the cobbler.

Best Conch Fritters ever. Homemade conch fritters are the best and these rival any I'd make at home. Soooooo good.

Grouper so fresh it practically swims off the plate covered in jerk seasoning, blackening spice, perfectly fried, or just straight grilled. BBQ shrimp that dances the cha‑cha on your tongue as it burrs with flavor. Piña colada sauce that whispers... yells... it's SUMMERTIME in your mouth! Service so attentive you'd think they read your mind... and Antonio makes it feel like dinner with family. He even steals your chair and try's to grab a conch fritter if you're gone from the table for too long. Speaking of conch fritters! Calypso's conch fritters vanish faster than your weekend plans and make you wander "where is the filler and flour?". If you've never wondered that, you've never had a real conch fritter! At least not one from Calypso's.

I have eaten here many many times. It's usually busy which says a lot so get there early or be prepared you may wait a little. I sit at the bar with Julio. He is the BEST. It's clean, chill and tropical vibe. I have had many things. Two of my favorite is the West Indie BBQ shrimp with a side of well done grid to dip in the sauce. YUM. My other favorite is the shrimp and scallop burger (I don't have a picture. Everything is good

5/12/25 Beautiful center cut swordfish, pan seared served with a side of potato salad fit the bill for me this evening. Hubby opted for the triple tail stuffed with crab meat. He had a side of black beans and a baked potato. Everything was fabulous. Great service ( thanks Rachael) fresh fish in a cozy relaxed atmosphere.

I really liked this place. Very clean and well put together. I admit I am no expert on Caribbean food but this was a great meal. I had Mussels special. They were served in a spicy, herbaceous and garlic forward tomato broth. I have had many versions of this dish. This was my favorite yet. Home run. I also ate Jerk Hogfish and Rice with Pigeon Peas. The Jerk seasoning had a really nice kick and a ton of flavor. Everything tasted very clean and healthy. Julio was one of the best bartenders I have ever had. It felt like he had been doing this for a lifetime. I am sure he is responsible for more than just the bar but he was there every time I needed something.

Really friendly service and really good food! What more can you ask for? We started with some clams, which were a little overcooked and on the chewy side. But the flavors were delicious. All of the burgers were pretty amazing too. The bread was honestly ok but the seafood was amazing. I got my fish with the jerk seasoning, low-key afraid it would be too spicy for me because I've had jerk chicken before and it practically made me cry. But the spiciness wasn't too bad, it was kind of perfect for me! (Not to say it isn't spicy, if you can't handle spice, you still probably shouldn't order the jerk seasoning.) And some of the burgers come with a really delicious mustard(?) sauce.

Decided on having a late lunch, early dinner around 4:30 at Calypso. Good thing we arrived earlier as by 6pm, there were people sitting outside waiting for a table. New to the restaurant and menu, we took our time reading it, often referring to our helpful and pleasant waiter. While doing so, we shared a tasty and tender conch salad. Next came two entrees: Curry Dolphin and Julio's combo of shrimp, scallop, grilled dolphin in a Caribbean marinade. Both were delicious. The interior is clean with a pleasant decor. Our server told us that the original owners were from The Bahamas. Hence there are still many choices on the menu that are either Bahamian or have a Caribbean influence. The choices of fish platters are plenty. Calypso is definitely on the must try list.

UPDATED REVIEW I dined at Calypso for lunch with my mom and it was both good and bad - sadly - it was mostly bad. THE GOOD Cleanliness/Vibe - The restaurant was spotless and the new renovation really is good. I've been there since the renovation and the colors are bright and vibrant. The atmosphere is very laid back and island like. It could easily be a restaurant in Islamorada or somewhere else in the Keys. Salad - The house salad with the ginger dressing is always fresh and delicious. That dressing is truly great and that has not changed. Service - The service has always been friendly and welcoming. That has remained fantastic and that begins the minute you step through the front door. The hostess is very friendly and I've never had a rude or surely server here. Always great with the wait staff and front of house. THE BAD - Fried Shrimp -My mom ordered a fried shrimp appetizer. She got a dozen fried shrimp that were all good size. In fact, I wished I had only ordered the fried shrimp app until....we realized that her shrimp had NOT been cleaned. I noticed she was picking off the breading and cleaning her shrimp. When I asked her what was going on, she lifted a mud vein out of her shrimp on her fork and she told me they had not been cleaned. I ordered the fried shrimp entree and my shrimp were jumbo shrimp that had been butterflied (cleaned). However, her shrimp app had shrimp that were large enough that they could have and should have been cleaned. I'm sorry but that's just gross and my 87 year old mother struggled through her lunch trying her best to clean these shrimp that, for some reason, had not been deveined. While my shrimp were cleaned and good, the only thing I would say that would keep these shrimp from being nigh perfect (apart from pulling out the mud vein) is the breading. The breading is, in my opinion, too heavy. I'd eaten fried shrimp at Isle of Palm in several locations in May and every place I ordered fried shrimp had excellent light breading and that really makes a difference with regards to how long the shrimp have to be cooked. I would give my fried shrimp an 8 out of 10, but my mom's shrimp got a 0 because who wants to eat feces. I mean....gross! Potato Salad - This looked so good and it tasted SO BLAND. There was absolutely no flavor. I took one bite and put the bowl aside. The presentation looked great, but the flavor was absolutely nothing beyond that of boiled unsalted potatoes. This is a southern staple that is so easy to get right. I'm not sure what recipe they are using but, and I'm not trying to be snarky in the slightest, Publix potato salad is next level compared to this. Collard Greens - Speaking of southern staple...if you're going to offer collards, there are some things that are just sacrilege when it comes to greens. I have never ever heard of collards made with sautéed onions. The main ingredient for collards should be ham hocks in the pot and they need to be cooked down with those or some form of pork. Apple cider vinegar adds a nice flavor profile for collards, too. However, these were just weird. Having grown up in Pompano Beach, I've had collards all my life and I have never tasted anything so bizarre. The texture was all wrong - these seemed to have been sautéed like kale because they were crunchy. The cut was all wrong, too. I've never seen collards presented with a chiffonade cut. The onions had been sautéed separately in something else and they just didn't taste good. All I can say is that for anyone familiar with collard greens and soul food, this will taste weird, at best. Sadly, I cannot recommend Calypso any longer. However, the few things that I have mentioned from my lunch today are not difficult items to address. A few tweaks to the recipes and I believe they will be back on top.

Laughing, telling stories, everybody was having a good time. Luckily we had reservations and were seated at a table immediately. Service was slow, but only because it was so crowded. Our server was doing his best with all his tables. The ambiance was festive and very loud. I ordered the Greek salad and the pasta with meatball and sausage. The salad came quickly. It was huge! Quite a bargain for $12! It was a meal in itself. The vegetables and lettuce were fresh, nicely diced and pleasantly cold. A very tasty start. My linguine was a nice portion as well. The red sauce was average, but the meatball (pork & beef) was large and delicious. The sausage was a full link, also a lot to eat. It was tasty. At $15 this seemed like half price for large portions. No wonder the place is crowded. We passed on dessert and brought half of our entree home. It was delightful the next day! The food is good and the prices are GREAT! I saw a menu from five years earlier and the prices were only a dollar less. The cost to eat here has not gone up much despite our inflationary economy. Prices- 5 star. Food- 4 stars. We were coming from Hallandale, we had an 8pm reservation got seated around 815 which wasn't too bad. We were sat in a dimmer quieter section away which I really appreciate since our 1 year old was sleeping giving us the perfect date-night setting. Unfortunately the last time we been to Shooters was Valentine's Day 2025. We weren't aware that the menu had been changed since our last time dining which was rather unfortunate since the two entrees (seared brown butter scallops & shrimp and grilled soy-ginger glazed salmon) we came for were changed on the menu. We ended up getting the soy glazed salmon and scallops & prawns which unfortunately we did not enjoy at all. Even the sides were different previously you could just get a side of Mac now you can only get a side of truffle Mac? The grilled soy ginger salmon was on a bed of veggies (bok choy, Napa cabbage, onions, peppers) the one that's currently on the menu was basically on two inedible pieces of bok choy and a bed of rice I couldn't even break and chew the bok choy. Our server Ava was very attentive and sweet even gave a beautiful little treat for a birthday dessert ( not a chocolate fan but her energy made the dessert amazing ). After we paid our check we asked Ava for a manager and did specify that it was regarding the food more and not her service. I didn't catch the name of the manager we spoke to but her response to us simply questioning the menu change was she's not the culinary director or something along those lines but she would still hear our feedback. She just had such an I don't care attitude about it in my opinion and had I not had a few drinks in my system, trying to enjoy my time out with my family and birthday I would've let her know her attitude regarding it just was unnecessary. We unfortunately agreed to find a new go-to restaurant to celebrate our special occasions since so much has changed. Thank you so much to Ava for making our visit worth it! Didn't get pictures of the salmon, scallops, drinks or oysters that we got but I did get the fish dip and the dessert. Edited to add pictures from one of our previous visits

And no matter what special you get, you are allowed some catfish with it. So, of course, we each had a fillet. It was the best part of the meal. While the scallops were decent, we were not fans because they were fried, and a bit dry. The fried catfish was crunchy but flavorful. As to the sides, the cole slaw is good. The collard greens were average. The baked sweet potato was very mushy, and the French fries needed to be crisper. The hush puppies were addictive. If you like large or plentiful portions, add a star, because your belly will surely be full. I couldn't finish my scallops or the extra piece of catfish that I had requested. And you're not allowed any doggie bags with the all-you-can-eat offers. We certainly didn't have room to try any desserts. Two entrees at $35.99 each, one alcoholic drink, tax, and tip was $115.

It's very busy and loud there, though, if you are eating indoors at the bar like I was. The bartenders and barbacks are very busy. The restaurant is known for something called "Scoobies" which per Google Gemini are "crab claws (traditionally blue crab or snow crab) that have been partially de-shelled--leaving just the "pincher" as a handle--and sautéed in a rich sauce of garlic, butter, and olive oil with crushed red pepper and scallions." I didn't get the Scoobies because I was apprehensive about how difficult they would be to eat. My dishes were fried oysters, fish tacos, and coconut shrimp platter. They were all fine, but unremarkable. The platter comes with fries and cole slaw as listed, but when I said to the bartender that I didn't need cole slaw, just extra fries, he offered/clarified that I could substitute another side instead, so I went with broccoli. I did notice that there were many flies flying around when my shrimp platter came out. One of the other bartenders put out a plate of hot sauce to repel the flies, which helped. The place is famous and sells its own merchandise like shirts and hats. It is not located near other restaurants, and you'll have to walk fifteen minutes or get an Uber if you are discouraged by the waiting time. The people dining here look like they are pretty well off and are able to enjoy life.

The menu offers several selections whether one is vegetarian, wants steak/lamb instead of pasta, or has come here for the dishes 'di mare.' We started off with an appetizer. Arancini rice balls with mushrooms and cheese. The Arancini balls flanked a bowl of stracciatella cheese. This was a special appetizer not on the regular menu. It was fantastic and dare I say luxurious? (Please put in on the regular menu!) For our main courses, my husband had the Fettuccini Florida Golden Crab & Scallops. It was Caribbean Italian fusion inspired with a flavorful, but not (hot) spicy, pasta sauce. I opted for the Maine Lobster Catalana. I have had my share of seafood pasta dishes throughout my life, but when this entree was placed in front of me, the aroma was so fragrant that I knew I was in for something special. The pasta sauce was made with high-quality tomatoes and caramelized onions (which I think really aided this sauce and made it different). The dish had clams and, of course, succulent lobster tail and the claw meat. The lovely aroma was not a tease because the dish tasted excellent. If having freshly made pasta with lobster sounds appealing to you, this is the dish to get. (They make their own pasta and the seafood is very fresh.) We ended our meal by sharing a fresh cannoli. The shell was not hard like a typical cannoli, rather it had the consistency of a doughnut. The ricotta filling with pistachio was absolutely out of this world. The plate was beautifully decorated with a berry drizzle in the shape of a seahorse. As you can tell, I'm pretty smitten with Sea Mario. I definitely want to return to this romantic restaurant for our anniversary later this year. Thank you for the incredible service and dishes.
