Fresh Dolphin Sandwich
Junior V.

LOVEDDDDD THE FOOD HERE!!! Everything from the lobster bisque soup, to the fried calamari, to the amazing dolphin sandwich was packed with flavor and personality. I'm a huge seafood lover so I'm happy I finally came to this place, like most seafood places I love the aesthetic of this one with the dark lighting and cool decor. Service was great too! Highly recommend coming here if you get the chance!

Whale's Rib was a solid stop! The whale fries with whale juice were really good, and the rum drinks were a hit too. I ordered the Polynesian chicken sandwich -- the chicken itself was good, but I wasn't a big fan of the bread, so I mostly just ate the chicken. Our waitress was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice depending on the weather and vibe you want. It's also conveniently close to the beach, though parking can be tricky when the beach is busy. They do have a small number of customer-only parking spots, which definitely helps.

Deerfield Beach casual beach bar and grill, with a Key West vibe, plus good food and friendly service Terrific beach ambience with laidback surfer ambiance. Sit outside if nice weather Service was terrific, prompt and friendly. Everyone here from the front check in to the server was smiling and helpful Food was also very good. Hawaiian chicken breast sandwich combined with homemade coleslaw really hit the spot.

I've eaten at The Whale's Rib for over 35 years and never wrote a review. At this point, it feels less like procrastination and more like a character flaw. Thirty. Five. Years. I've had friendships that didn't last as long as my loyalty to this place... jobs have come and gone... and somehow those still got more documentation. Let's get this out of the way early, because it matters. It's a dive. Not "we hired a designer to make it look like a dive" trendy. I mean a real one. A beautiful, glorious, perfectly worn-in dive. The kind of place where the wood paneling has seen things, the license plates on the wall have outlasted relationships, and absolutely nothing is trying too hard. Because it doesn't have to. And then the food shows up... and gently reminds you why this place has been packed since before people were arguing about reviews online. The move? Always has been, always will be. The Dolphin Key West sandwich. Blackened dolphin, seasoned like someone actually respects the fish, sitting on a dark pumpernickel roll with Swiss and their homemade slaw. Hot, fresh, consistent to a level that feels almost suspicious. "Consistency like this isn't luck... it's legacy." Every bite tastes like the last time you had it... even if that last time was five, ten, or yes... thirty-five years ago. Whale chips on the side. Extra whale sauce. This is not a suggestion. This is a life choice. If you skip it, I can't help you. Start with the conch chowder. Finish with the key lime pie. Congratulations, you've just unlocked the full experience. There's always a wait. There's always a crowd. And somehow, nobody's mad about it. You stand around, you talk, you smell the food coming out of the kitchen like it's teasing you a little... and then you sit down and forget you ever waited. That's how this place works. Yeah, they've been featured on the Food Network. Cool. Good for them. But let's be honest, that feels less like a discovery and more like someone finally catching up to what locals have known forever. Five stars. No hesitation. And yeah... I'm a little annoyed it took me 35 years to make that official. If South Florida had a Hall of Fame, The Whale's Rib isn't just in it... it's first ballot, unanimous, and they stop counting votes early.

Back here again with friends on a Saturday night. We arrived around 6:30 pm, had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. Parking is a big issue here. We were lucky that there was one spot at their parking lot available when we arrived. I had a garden salad with blackened shrimp this time. There were 6 shrimps, the portion of salad is a lot, I finished the shrimps of course but I couldn't finish all of the salad, I had to take it home to enjoy it. Hubby had tuna salad and crab cake, he liked it.

It was just what we were looking for - a Quick fairly priced place.i had a mahi sandwich & wifey had a chicken sandwich. Conch fritters were a great start. I'd go back for those alone. I like iced tea and they give you a small pitcher. Service was great and the ambiance was fine. We sat outside.

This isn't my first time here, but I had a friend visiting and I knew this was a must-stop. There's so much history in this place, and my friend absolutely fell in love with it. We enjoyed the fried shrimp with home fries . she was obsessed with the homemade spicy garlic red sauce. The dolphin sandwich was also delicious, super fresh and flavorful. Our server was friendly and really helped us choose, which made the experience even better. No complaints at all. If you're in the area, definitely come here. The beach is nearby, the vibe is great, and it's one of those spots you just keep coming back to. Love this place.

It has been years since I had been to the Whale's Rib and happy we went. We all enjoyed our food. You MUST get the whale chips! Sooooo good! Everyone enjoyed their food. The only downside is parking. Managers don't just stand around. When they saw my husband's drink empty it was immediately refilled by the manager. Our server was super friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back.

Lobster Bisque

A chill restaurant in walking distance from the beach. Outside seating was the best as it was sunny and warm on this particular day. My friend and I enjoyed cups of soup. I had lobster bisque and he had clam chowder. We also ordered oysters, Rock Shrimp and a Blackened Dolphin Sandwich (fries not needed). A very filling and quite delicious meal that would definitely have again on another warm beach day. The server was fine. Not great but not terrible. Our food came out the way it was supposed to and he was always around when necessary so great on that front.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, keep coming back, 30 yrs! Chips are the best.

Let me cut to the chase, it's crab legs on crab legs on crab legs for a great price. They're so tasty and sweet that you don't even need the butter they provide. The clam chowder is done to perfection and the crab cake is a great way to start your meal. Not pictured are the delicious whale chips which are must when dining here. The service is always efficient and the restaurant is large with plenty of seating. They don't take reservations but they usually get guys in and out quickly to where you won't wait too long on busy nights. The parking onsite is free as long as it's not too busy which is clutch since you are right on the beach and have to pay for other restaurants around the beach.

This place was so neat! The long wait was well worth it! Rumy, our waitress was friendly and attentive. The chips with "whale juice" are so good. We shared lots of apps - all delicious. They were out of a lot of things in their raw bar, so I ended up getting the lobster salad sandwich. It did not disappoint!

Finally writing a review after years of coming to Whale's Rib, because they deserve the love! Popped in over Memorial Day Weekend and despite the crowds, the wait was surprisingly short...maybe 15 minutes tops. Not bad at all for a holiday weekend. We feasted like we meant it. Standouts were definitely the escargot and steamed clams, absolutely fav's on the menu. Seriously, don't sleep on the escargot, it's buttery, garlicky perfection! MUST HAVE! I went with the blackened dolphin for my main. It was a little overcooked this time around, but still tasty and full of flavor. Nothing a little lemon and some dipping sauce couldn't fix. Whale's Rib has been a go-to spot for years, and it never disappoints. Solid seafood, laid-back beachy vibe, and always a few great daily specials. If you know, you know.

Ask the Community - The Whale's Rib

What are the vegan options? Even the veggie wrap has cheese...

Have the cheese removed from the sandwich and that is your vegan option. Also the potato chips minus the sauce it comes with. It is ultimately a seafood bar in Florida, my expectations for veg food are not high.

Is there a parking lot?

Yes. Very small though

Is there a happy hour today, if so, the times. Do you serve fresh oysters?

Happy Hour is Monday through Friday.

Is this place kid friendly?

Yes.

We've been here and eaten dinner in their backroom. We've brought visiting friends and family. We've been here over the years for various lobster specials and even sushi and during happy hours, too. This was the first time we'd been back in some time. It was a nicer and quieter experience coming for lunch during the week. We were able to spread out at a slightly larger table. There are still two kitchens, so it gets a bit complicated when you order. The food comes out whenever its ready, and from different locations, so you don't always get your appetizer first -- sometimes it comes with your meal. Next time, I'll try to remember this. The sodas are not brand name. They are not the best nor close to the originals. I think the carbonation might have been off, as well. Today, they had a special on oysters -- they were half priced. I ordered some peel n eat shrimp to come first so I could share this with my husband. And some Nola oysters -- half a dozen "grilled" New Orleans style for my main when he had his lunch. Instead, everything for me came out all at once. And the shrimp -- which I'd assumed would be cold -- were served hot. That was my mistake, I guess, not to verify this when I ordered. That being said, the shrimp swimming in garlic butter and a tad messy to eat, were a nice large size and quite good. They were served with a couple lemon wedges and a small container of cocktail sauce. The oysters, however, were miniscule and basically some hard melted cheese on a tiny bit of something difficult to taste/find. They didn't taste grilled, either. If we hadn't been paying only $10 for the six of them, I would have been even more disappointed. My husband got their shrimp and chips. The fries were served well done as ordered. The shrimp were in a thick batter. The dish came with some tartar and cocktail sauce. He said they were okay (and that my shrimp were much better than his). We had good service, and everyone was friendly and smiling.

A few even added some balsamic and said the combo was delicious. The wahoo bites we had as an appetizer was crispy and flaky and lovely. Our 16 month old guest enjoyed them as well. I ordered the sesame crusted ahi tuna and Bahamian peas and rice side. The tuna was perfectly cooked and the Bahamian peas and rice were amazing!!! The spicy flavor and beautifully textured rice were the perfect side with the tuna! Others ordered the Linguine Alla Vongole - fresh clams in the shell with garlic scampi sauce and Crazy Bob's Shrimp and Calamari Fra Diavolo with angel hair pasta. There was a generous amount of clams, shrimp and calamari in the respective dishes enjoyed with the wonderful pastas. The generous amount of pasta was taken home. Our sever Agnes was a delight! Very kind and an absolute pleasure! While we were too full and content to have desserts those who live in town said they will need to come back and leave room for the key lime pie. The dining area was decorated with wonderful art and nautical treasures. A few tables exist for outdoor dining. Mostly for two or four diners. Highly recommend Chef Dee's restaurant!

We entered and met Sandy, the nicest yet down to earth hostess. She greeted us and walked us to tables toward the back which would accompany 3 people. This was away from the Steel Drums which was the main reason we were visiting the establishment. I mentioned I had called previously to make sure the steel drums were definitely playing tonight and we really wanted to be seated closer to watch and hear the entertainment. All the seats close to where he was were 2 top tables or the bar but my son is 12- so that was a "no." She then said we could sit at 2 tables but we couldn't move the chairs. We said that was GREAT as it was close to the music and we didn't mind sitting in a "line" as that's kinda like sitting at the bar. We were very pleased and had the nicest server who was very attentive and helpful. I think the manager was a little confused as to why Sandy sat our family like that but what she did was provide excellent customer service and helped our family have a peaceful relaxing evening. And, for that - Sandy is the best and say "Hi" to her next time you go there. She will do her best to assist you. We will be back to the Nauti-Dawg. The food was really good and very filling. We also ordered the Chicken (Pollo) Chaufa and the Seafood Chaufa. Both dishes came in small portions, and the seafood was only placed on top of the rice. Sadly, they lacked the distinctive Chaufa flavor and tasted a bit bland. The Lomo Saltado beef was tender but similarly lacked seasoning, and the Ají Amarillo was just okay. On a positive note, the service was excellent, and the ambiance felt warm and inviting. It seems the food might have been adjusted to cater to a more traditional or less adventurous palate. Peruvian cuisine is renowned for its rich flavors and Asian influences, and I believe it has the potential to be truly exceptional.
