I have been somewhat of a regular at this place ever since the previous owners left a few years ago. When I would come in more regular, Jeff (the owner) knew me by name and what my order was. It was nice to finally find an owner of an establishment who displayed great customer service (this is sadly hard to come by these days). The milk is organic, and they recently changed to the mocha powder that does not contain corn syrup and tastes WAY better than the corn syrupy syrup you find in many chain coffee shops. Their mochas have a balanced flavor that isn't too sweet. Somehow they manage to charge less than the chain coffee shops who serve non-organic milk and crappy ingredients. I buy the same mocha powder for my at home espresso machine, and I know it's better (and pricier) stuff compared to the junk syrups at some other establishments. I haven't had a lot of the food menu items, but I have had the gluten free monster cookies, which are good even though they are gluten free. read more

The Fireroast Cafe Would Prefer You Meet Somewhere Else. I like to buy and sell stuff on Craigslist and prefer meeting somewhere safe and local. Always have met down at the Fireroast because it's close and I love supporting small businesses over big chains. More often than not (just the day before as a mater of fact) the person I am meeting stays for a drink or a bite to eat spreading the love to new customers. Sadly, I was floored today when I was literally tossed out on my ear of the completely empty cafe by someone who I guess is the manager / owner. Me and the gentleman I was meeting were standing at the bar table by the front door for a minute, maybe two, and the following occurred: "Can I help you" "Actually we are just doing some quick Craigslist stuff." "We would prefer you not do that inside, this area is for customers" I looked around and there were no customers, not one. Only two potential customers, both being given the boot because we were standing there and not ordering for a minute. So I tried sending a note to the place, to get a feel for what the deal was, why kick people out who at the very least are making the place look open and they just decided to ignore me. Down the street is a nice place called the Riverview Cafe, parking is a little tighter, more popular I guess when they don't kick people out. But that's evidently where I'll be going in the future. It's a shame, I actually enjoyed the Fireroast until today. read more

Inconsistent and over priced. I always come in here and order the chicken salad sandwich with soup. Sometimes the sandwich will come with chips and a pickle, other times just a few carrots, sometimes nothing. Today I asked the staff (who seems to be a bunch of confused teenagers) if it came with chips. They gave me an attitude and told me it would be extra and the whole interaction was just awkward. Two minutes later my dark chocolate cold press came up. Usually they will run it out to you if you are seated in the back section, but they screamed out my order and waited as I came around the corner. The drink tasted bitter and gross when they are usually on point. (I get it all the time) Im fed up with the way the staff treats some customers here. Sometimes they make you feel like you're seriously interrupting something. Ive been coming here for about a year now and recently the lattes/coffee have been poorly made, my chicken rice soup has scraps of fat and bone in it, and they will subtly let you know if you are not welcomed. I have had several experiences with the owner at Fireroast Cafe that have left me feeling less than appreciated as a customer. Everything from rude attitude when asking about the menu to an eye roll and "tsk tsk" when I moved a chair back where it came from. But the best yet is actually hearing what a bother I am. It is great that your Cafe is set up to attract people wanting to do work on their computers, but a bit disconcerting to over hear the manager complain that it's because of the "computer crowd" that his "bar crowd" is suffering. If you want be a coffee shop offering a place for people to work, be that. If you want to be a bar, than figure out how to be that instead. But mostly I recommend working on your people skills. I will say I have never had a bad experience with any of the other staff, which is why I gave 3 stars. read more

I tried this place for the first time today, and it's a great spot to do work, eat, and drink at the same time!! It is small, but wasn't too crowded on a saturday. I think everything is reasonably priced, and the food was really good. I ordered an espresso brownie, which was heavenly. I also got half of a pesto goat cheese sandwich, and a cup of the chicken and wild rice soup. All for $10. Everything tasted great. One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong. I am the thing that doesn't belong btw, at least that's what it felt like at Fireroast. I stopped in on a Saturday morning after reading about their especially delicious pumpkin spice chai latte. I waited while the girl behind the counter was chatting with what was obviously a regular customer - no probs, as I was awaiting the arrival of a friend and wasn't in the slightest rush. Then I got up to order my drink and asked (politely I might add) for a pumpkin spice chai latte. I wasn't asked if I wanted a specific kind of milk or if I wanted a specific size. Instead, I was asked, "anything else?" Uhmmm . . . the granola with yogurt. That sounds good, I'll have that. I paid, I tipped, and I kind of stood near where I wanted to sit because I wasn't sure about the protocol - sit and they bring it out? Stand and go up to the counter? Linger awkwardly? I did the third thing of course. My granola came out first with a guy meeting me halfway - he wasn't at the counter so he probably didn't know who ordered it. When my latte was done, the girl yelled it out, despite having later seen her bring drinks out to other customers and despite the fact that there was no one else in line. Well alright then. I should add that the 3 stars come from the fact that I really loved both the latte and the granola. The granola was just the right amount of sweet, nice and crunchy with a bit of dried fruit, and served with plain yogurt, which a girl who is attempting not to shovel sugar into her mouth certainly appreciates. The latte was perfectly spiced, maybe not as "pumpkin-y" as I was expecting, but delicious none the less and hit the spot on a cool fall day! Maybe I'll head back again, but I think I'd probably order my stuff to go so I don't feel like the very obvious outsider again! read more

So I went to this place about a month ago ordered some coffee for my daughter and myself. My daughter is in a wheelchair so I asked the guy behind the counter, "Do you have an entrance for handicapped?" He answered "this is an old building" which didn't really answer my question. So I asked again. He snapped at me "This is a old building. What do you expect? I don't own this place take it up with the owner." I let it go just thought someone is having a bad day. I went again today I asked for sugar free syrup in my coffee because it says online they have a choice of sugar free. He said "we don't have the sugar free vanilla syrup" So I asked "Do you have the caramel sugar free syrup" His response was "I told you we don't have sugar free syrup" Rude!!! I ordered a cappuccino with almond milk they charged me .75 cents extra. I get my coffee with the lid on I leave thinking I have what I ordered and taste my coffee no milk. Opened the cup to look the cup is less then half full and the coffee is black not a drop of milk. Not cool man!!! So I paid over 5.00 all together for a coffee in an 8 oz cup that was half full. Great coffee! The rosemary chicken salad sandwich was to die for and the breakfast sandwich was great, too. We were some of the few in there (mid-Thursday morning, not a peak time) and the people working in there were very friendly and asked how everything was. Very comfortable atmosphere. We saw this place on the way back from the Riverview theater on Saturday, and Tim wanted to stop after the movie and a stop at the comic book store. Really cute. The lady in the back was making an apple pie-which seemed quaint, somehow. We hung out here for a couple of hours, and it soon got packed because the first Saturday of the month is a open-mic poetry reading. We had to leave before it started however, which made some people without chairs very happy to get our booth. The table by the door was kind of cold, but we gave some money to the economy by ordering chips with guac and salsa (the chips were from a bag, the salsa from a jar) a huge chicken burrito with rice, black beans and lots of chicken, not much cheese-not as good as Chipotle, I'm sorry to report. We also had a chicken mole tamale that I was excited about. When I think coffee place, tamale isn't what I think, but it was great! That was stage one. After a couple of hours, we decided to go for stage two, which was a piece of this ginormous guiness chocolate cake, which looked and tasted like regular chocolate cake but had a funny smell to me, and got a cappachino and some kind of icy chocolate drink for Tim. He didn't like the drink, which I saw her make by adding tap water to powder, which wasn't so great. He thought it was watered down, and asked her to put more chocolate in it. The food wasn't fantastic, but I wanted it to be. We'll be back. It's always fun to find a new place to go. read more

This neighborhood cafe has fresh bakery goods and often they are still warm. The soups are delicious. For me an important issue is they are willing to make and serve fresh de-caf. I may not be able to drink "the real thing" but the de-caf is great. Probably most important though for a neighborhood place is the friendly service--even if you are not ordering everything on the menu. Fireroast Cafe is definitely the best cafe/restaurant in the Howe neighborhood. The owner, Jeff, is really friendly and does such a good job making you feel welcomed. It's hard not to want to stop by more than once a week, and if you live nearby - it's a great place to get some ice cream or beer and just relax. For food, I'm particularly fond of the turkey panini and their chicken wild rice soup. Now that I'm thinking about it - I have to go again for that soup. It has such a unique flavor, like curry is in it or something. They have finally extended their hours (and posted those hours on the front door!). There should be no reason to not check out Fireroast. They also have gluten free options for everything (from Ice Cream (which I believe is from Sebastian Joes?) to alcohol to food). Fireroast is such a great place, I only wish I had more money so that I could stop by more often! read more

Best chai latte I've had in this town -- it's mellow, with more tea than sugar, Yay! Awesome booths for working, studying, eating, chatting. Filtered water with cold and hot water for tea top-ups; brilliant idea, why don't more cafes do this?! Fewer kids and squeals than Riverview so Fireroast offers a calmer (and cleaner) atmosphere, especially after 3pm. Might be my new fave cafe in Minneapolis. read more

Truly a hidden city GEM :) I've stopped in mid-morning, 6 pm-ish and staff have always been incredible nice, cheery, and knowledgeable of what is to serve. Quality eats at a reasonable price. My only wish is they'd stay open later on Fri, Sat as it would be a great alternative place to meet after a movie at the nearby Riverview Movie Theater, about 5 blocks east. A quaint, locally owned, oasis in our urban jungle. Too many of these gems have been lost to the national and regional chains. It's good to see a resurgence of locally owned businesses. Fireroast has excellent coffee drinks, on-site baked goods, food options and features Sebastian Joe's ice cream. My usual is grabbing a latte and muffin, sitting in the cheerful seating area and sinking into a good book. This cafe has a strong neighborhood following as well as regulars, like me, who will take the drive from downtown (where coffee options are plentiful). Fireroast owner, Jeff, and his staff have a wonderful working relationship, and it shows in how they interact with their customers. Each of them are genuinely interested in how you are and what they can do to make your day even better. Local artists also have the opportunity to display their work. I applaud Fireroast's support of these artists. I highly recommend you stop by and enjoy the Fireroast experience. I am hooked! read more

I am sure this is probably a great place to eat, but I was very disappointed on Thursday evening when we had to order 3 times because they had run out of ingredients for many of their dishes. It was early, only 5pm! Each time we ordered, it took 5 or more minutes for them to realize they couldn't make what we ordered. First thing that I gotta say about this place is that I love the booths. And the cute painted walls in the back room. Anyways... I usually stick around for a while, because they make their drinks in huuge mugs. They have a pretty good menu, usual lunch items, soups, sandwiches; but also have tamales, quesadillas, etc. My faves are their black bean hummus, and chocolate chip cookies. Awesome neighborhood cafe, great vibes, cozy location with lots of inviting places to sit and hangout, both inside and out. Cool from the hand-made jewelry and greeting cards they also sell down to the bamboo napkin dispensers. And the espresso is great. I just discovered this wonderful cafe yesterday. I live only a few blocks away from the place but did not know it existed until I googled for a coffee shop nearby. I fell in love with the place as soon as I walked in. It's cozy and gets tons of light. My husband & I sat there for almost 5 hours working and really enjoyed the space. The coffee & baked goods were yummy. I haven't yet tried anything on the menu yet. The owner did mention that he was trying to start a board games night on Fridays, which sounds exciting. I left feeling very happy and warm because it was such a great space to hang out. Overall, a great find. I'll definitely be back! Update on 1/6/14: the owner contacted me after my review to let me know that they do have GF bread for any of their sandwiches, which is a winner for me.
