Had an hour between appointments and the receptionist recommended the Astoria Cafe for excellent coffee - boy was she right! The young man at the counter offered me an extensive menu of regular coffees, espresso drinks and specialty drinks, all of which could be made hot or cold. They also have a variety of milk selections. Unfortunately, they were out of skim milk today, but he offered to tweak the amount when I told him that the main reason I usually had skim milk was to enhance the coffee flavor(and their coffee really tasted good). Additionally, he offered to make my drink in my personal cup which was great since I hate to use plastic whenever I can. This location is only a half block from United Hospital and all its various buildings and there is no good coffee within that entire complex. It's definitely worth getting a breath of fresh air and taking a block and a half stroll to have a great cup of Joe! By the way, although I tried hard not to look, their pastry case looked scrumptious, filled with homemade pies by the slice and other goodies. Since they are so close to the hospital it's really nice that they also have a lovely display of fresh cut flowers. Next time I'm down here I'm going to stop in for a meal. If the food is as good as the coffee I think I'll become a regular. read more

This is such a fun cafe - but be warned, it fills up fast and parking can get kinda nuts around this part of West 7th. I didn't pick up right away that you take a menu and seat yourself, which can feel a little chaotic at first, but once we sat down, we were able to settle in. I have been here too many times to count now! I have brought most of my friends, individually so that says a lot! This time I paid attention to their cleanliness and I would give them -1. The lady who was cleaning tables barely cleaned them. I'm not sure if she just wasn't motivated this day, but that's not okay! I was sure to use my cleaning wipes to while down our table as she partially cleaned the table next to me. I ordered the Crème Brûlée coffee which is always good and the brioche egg and bacon sandwich with potatoes. Both are great choices! It's normally pretty busy here especially on the weekends. Cute spot! I love that this place has taken over the road on the side and made it into a cozy outdoor patio. We came for a late brunch, and got a matcha latte (delicious, lightly sweet and creamy) along with a sandwich, wrap, and kids breakfast. The food was very delicious, the potato wrap was heavy on potatoes especially when paired with breakfast potatoes, but that's my fault for ordering potatoes on the side! The when in Rome sandwich was really good, the sweet peppers added a lot of flavor. The kids breakfast was a pretty good deal, 9$ for a full plate of breakfast foods. All the servers were super nice and helpful. Happy hour every day after 5pm, which includes 20% off everything except pastries. There are many pretty, special drinks like the rainbow latte, or smores latte, so its a great place to stop when you want something instagramable and special. My first visit to Cafe Astoria was so good that I went back later the same day for brunch! I had stopped for a coffee on a Saturday morning and was able to walk min and place an order right away. There was plenty of seating and the cafe is beautifully decorated. I ordered an iced creme brûlée latte and a strawberry cream cheese danish. I would get both of these again but would consider getting the coffee hot to have the brûlée sugar on top. When I went back for brunch that afternoon I ordered the bacon mushroom toast, with chili oil and manchego cheese. I highly recommend everything that I tried! We went to Cafe Astoria at 11 on a Sunday, so it was packed! But tables are first-come-first-serve, so we got lucky and found a spot quickly. Instead of servers, you order your food using a QR code app. The decor and architecture are charming and cozy! It was quite noisy but not impossible to hold a conversation. The food is reasonably priced. All of our dishes were good but they didn't "wow" us. I got the Frenchie croissant sandwich, which was a little heavy on the egg but too light on the mushroom/cheese/onions. We also got a pull-apart pastry, which similarly was decent but nothing particularly special. Their coffee drinks are fun and creative! We were worried they might be "style over substance," but my date, who is a coffee-loving former barista, gave it her stamp of approval. You can also order from a QR code. We ordered from QR but one drink wasn't on the menu so wr had to order it in person. They bring out the drinks quickly. This place is a hot commodity in the St. Paul area. Cafe Astoria has been on my list of places to try for years now. I'm not a big fan of St. Paul and dread that side of town so much but have been trying to adventure a bit more lately. Not knowing the process or setup of the cafe we entered from the back door and walked to the front. We eventually seen signage that said if you plan to dine in just grab a table and order via the QR code. Only problem is it was very packed and not much standing room as staff are trying to move around as well to deliver food/drinks. For a while we stood at the front counter debating whether to do takeout or try to wait for seats to become avail but as we waited people were coming in grabbing tables before they were even wiped down. We caught on and ended up doing the same to grab a table. We ordered an iced strawberry matcha, matcha latte, Sunday Candy (from the specials menu), bacon cheddar & egg crepe and a strawberry & cream crepe. The drinks were all good. Loved the cute artistry. The crepes were good as well. The food came out fairly quick but the drinks did take a while. They were really busy so I'll give some grace. Prices were fair. They do have covers over the door to help with drift but it was a bit cold as the doors were constantly being opened. It's pretty industrial looking inside and really cool wall art. When I looked up above our table there was a huge spiderweb. Parking in the area can be rough if there are events going on. We were able to get a metered spot about 2 blocks away. But again it's nice because they have 2 doors you can enter (one on each side of the block). Overall cute cafe, good drinks but not sure I'd go through the hassle of going here again. read more

Astoria is a Filipino owned business, as a Filipino myself, I have to give major props to this company. I adore the menu and their coffee and tea varieties. My friends and I came to Cafe Astoria to do some planning for our trip, and we were in there for more than 90 minutes and we were approached by a staff member. They were nice enough to let us stay and informed us if it gets too busy, they will have to kick us out. Which it does get busy, but lucky there weren't many people and people were going in and out of the cafe. Therefore, customer services was great. I got the ube matcha teddy bear drink and that was delicious and yummy. I had a tough decision to order that or just a regular matcha, which I do not regret my decision. The breakfast sandwich I got was delicious as well with the scramble egg and sausage. The salad was tasty as well (i need to know the dressing for it). The ambiance was great and lively, people were going in and out and enjoying a little self-time. It was a great experience, but the only bad thing about this cafe is the parking. There were a few things that didn't blow us away (my sandwich and hubby's ube latte were both good, not fantastic, and they missed stuff on my husband's sandwich). It's been per-Covid since I've been here. They are still mind blowing amazing with their hot drinks and customers service! Annnnd they've expanded a lot since I was here last! My kiddo has the day off of school and doing art at a coffee shop has become our latest fav thing to do and the beauty of Cafe Astoria's oh-so-pretty drinks popped in mind. I have a soft spot in my heart for Cafe Astoria because of its Filipino ownership. When you walk in you are immediately stricken with its colorful walls and charming decor. I loved the sinigang Campbell soup print specifically. It makes for a great Instagram story! It's located on Grand Ave in Saint Paul in the heart of the city, so the location is great for that reason. One downside to this is that parking can be hard to come by and as someone who hates parallel parking, I had to face my fears for this. I'd recommend visiting sometime during the week, as they have signs asking customers to limit their visit to 60 minutes during their busiest mornings on Saturdays and Sundays. They have free WiFi, which is always a plus. They have a large array of drinks and great food, you can find something for everyone there! From rainbow colored lattes to gold-laden matcha, their drinks are unique, vibrant, and aesthetically pleasing. I got the Leah's Happy Place iced matcha and it was a bit sweet for my taste and the matcha wasn't the highest quality (I look for vibrant, bright green matcha) but the lavender and pistachio flavor profile was pretty good. If I were to order it again, I'd as for half sweetness. Besides that, I was able to get my drink right as I paid since the barista was so fast!
