My wife and I had never been to--or even heard of--Baldamar, so when our friends invited us to Restaurant Week there, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to give it a try. From the hostess who graciously held the doors open for us in the 95° heat to our incredible server, David, everything was outstanding. We started with cocktails. I had what may have been the best bourbon Old Fashioned I've ever tasted, and my wife enjoyed a wonderfully refreshing cocktail (whose name I, unfortunately, can't remember). We began our meal with the roasted Brussels sprouts. Normally, I'm not much of a Brussels sprouts fan, but I happily cleaned the plate. My wife and I shared the 12-ounce filet mignon, cooked medium rare, and it was absolute perfection. Chef's kiss. David recommended a bottle of wine to pair with our steak. It wasn't inexpensive, but it was worth every penny. But wait... there's more. As incredible as that wine was with the filet, it somehow paired even better (yes, I know that sounds impossible) with the slice of heaven they call chocolate cake. I'm sure it has a much fancier name on the menu, but "slice of heaven" seems more accurate. If you've read my other reviews, you know I have a tendency toward hyperbole. Stopped into Baldamar and had a great experience sitting at the bar. Ashley took such attentive care of me from the moment I arrived and was incredibly welcoming throughout my visit. I started with the tequila and mezcal Old Fashioned, and it was fantastic. It was well-balanced, beautifully presented, and garnished perfectly. The food was equally impressive. The wings were delicious--crispy, well-seasoned, and cooked perfectly. My only small note would be that the celery was a little limp. The Caesar salad has officially been added to my regular rotation. The jammy egg was cooked perfectly with a rich, yolky center that was still easy to slice. The Parmesan crisps were thoughtfully sized, adding great texture without being so large they scraped the roof of your mouth. The salad was evenly dressed, making every bite flavorful. We ate at Baldamar for lunch. It has been a long time since I've been over in Roseville so I was surprised when we rolled up to find such a large building in the parking lot of the mall. The restaurant itself is really beautiful and it's also very big. I guessed 200 seats plus patio. The space is very elegant, and clearly a lot of attention went into the design. I would describe it as kind of modern steakhouse vibe. Dark wood, faux fur and leather finishes, etc. Elegant. We were seated at a booth by the bar with a big window view of the patio and parking lot. We were immediately slightly offput because the marble ledge separating the booth from the window was dirty - grease and little food crumbs. Not the best first impression. The booth and table were both clean though. Our waitress, Ash, did provide good service but I would say honestly she was a bit too attentive if that makes sense, and she was also too chatty for us. There were several times when she lingered at our table to tell us something we didn't inquire about or to just talk about something. It was a bit annoying honestly. But the service itself was good. We were also visited by a manager during our visit. We each got a mocktail (it was lunch) but they have an impressive drink menu. I got the Red Rose which was really tasty, and my husband got the pineapple drink, which he also said was good. -We ordered the chimichuri shrimp appetizer, which was pretty banging. Four really large shrimp, each on its own piece of bruschetta, doused in chimichuri sauce. Even for me, with a low spice tolerance, it was just the right amount of spice and it was really really good. -We also got a round of oysters. The oysters themselves were fresh - no complaints there. When they were delivered to our table, the person did not tell us which variety was which (pretty standard when serving oysters at any restaurant). Because we eat oysters a lot and one of the varieties was sweet petite, it was fairly easy to tell which was which. But in my opinion, there should have been information given when the oysters were served. The other big issue was the shucking. Some of the oysters hadn't been fully separated from the shell, and we both found ourselves picking bits of shell from our mouths. We actually had a little discussion about the $6 price tag. I felt it was reasonable, my husband felt it was high. But for $6 apiece, the oysters need to be shucked properly and these were not. Ash also made a point to tell us all kinds of information we didn't ask for about their happy hour, which includes $3 oysters. That would be a steal if they learn how to shuck them. -I got the half french dip sandwich, and I was really glad I just ordered the half because what I was served was totally a whole sandwich in my book. The accompanying fries were delicious, crispy, deep golden brown and hot. The au jus served with the sandwich was slightly on the salty side but not terrible. And I do realize it's au jus. In all it was a pretty decent sandwich. -Hubby got the sea bass sandwich, which was also pretty tasty. I'll be honest and say that I think the entree sea bass would have been better. The fish was so good that I don't honestly think you needed the bun. But it was really good and fresh and delicious. We skipped dessert. In all, a pretty solid dining experience and the food was very good. But it was the minor things mentioned that bothered us, so 3 stars with room for improvement upon our return. read more

We stopped here for the first time in AGES. It was a Friday afternoon around 3pm and I didn't think we would need a reservation, but we did if we wanted to eat inside. It was a beautiful day out, so we sat outside. Our server was great! We started with the birria tacos and French dip sliders. Both were decent. The real star of the show was the Brussels sprouts and the loaded baked potato! We also ordered a steakhouse burger to share, but were so full by that point that most of it went home. First time here and it was FABULOUS! From the moment we stepped in, we knew this would be a great dining experience. The vibe was classy and elegant; the atmosphere filled with upscale furniture and decor - everything was so neatly placed. Our server was friendly and gave us great recommendations. They give a personal signed $15 off voucher for next time you come in with "Happy Anniversary" written on it, nice touch Baldamar. Quality was good, but flavor was okay. As the wine was coming there was a mishap and it ended up knocking over my wine. Easy fix, no problem i'm reasonable. New wine is good wine. The salmon looked very plain and dry, but it took me for a shock. It came with mashed potatoes and corn and everything tasted great. Salmon was moist with a great crunch. It is very much comfort food style-esque and it may not blow my mind it was good. We also got two sides, cream mushrooms and brussel sprouts. Brussels were done well, not mindblowing but the taste of the sauce on them reminded me of vietnamese fish sauce "nuoc mam". Mushrooms were good, but thats about it. The steak was too salty, like too the point we sent it back after the first bite. Server came and told her the news, she asked if we wanted. " a steak with no salt", we said "no we just want a steak that has less salt". Waited about 5-8 minutes for a new steak, seems like after they heard we thought it was too salty, they ended up going with no salt on the steak. Bland. Quality of the steak was okay, can find much better for price point imo. Sent me home with a dessert, manager came and talked to us and we didn't want any trouble so we took the steak home to put into shin ramen. Lobster Ravioli. That is all you need to know. Lobster Ravioli. The ravioli are stuffed with lobster in a perfectly fine sauce. But then they sprinkle on the magic seasonings and it is elevated to ethereal status. The salty finish elevates it. The prime rib was unfortunately cold. And the au jus sauce. If you are going to serve cold meat then the au jus should be hot. I did appreciate that rare was an option. A nice selection of entree choices. The steak au poivre with it's accompanying potatoes was excellent. As was the shrimp chimichurri. The desserts were slightly above average, although the macarons were great. I said we'd be back, and we came back :) we went without a reservation which was a mistake. We ended up sitting at a high top in the bar area in the doorway and overall just felt too in the doorway. Food 4/5: we started with the pork belly. It was overall well cooked and flavored. We both got steaks and shared mac and cheese and the Brussels sprouts. The sprouts were the star of the show, I just wish the portion was larger. The Mac and cheese was just ok. We did get it without the lobster, but I overall prefer a creamy Mac and cheese and thought the spice didn't compliment the cheese included in the Mac. I got one of the wagyu steak and it was just ok. I asked for medium and it was more towards a medium well. We finished with the chocolate cake and they also brought some ice cream thing we didn't order. Both were decadent and well balanced. Service 5/5: our waiter was attentive and overall did a good job. Ambiance 3/5: overall this place has a cozy elevated vibe. The table we sat at was a bit of an anomaly to the overall aesthetic. We were so close to the doorway and anytime the door opened we were met with the ice cold air. This was actually my third time coming here but first time for lunch. We came to celebrate my partner's birthday. He had the new york strip steak which was hands down the best steak I have ever tried in the state. Cooked to perfection. I had the oysters which were also delicious. For starters, I highly recommend the "Bread is Life " with three dipping options. So freaking good we ordered two. Baldamar lived up to the hype for me! My wife and I came in for the Champagner brunch and it did not disappoint. We tried way too many dishes to list. But I loved the scallop, the steak and eggs, and the king crab Benedict. And let's not forget get about the drinks. So much more than champagne which is flowing liberally. There are several tasty cocktails. Between us I think we tried them all :) The 14 Karat Queen may have been the highlight. But my favorite drink was actually the Pinot Noir. It was super tasty especially for being featured in an all you can drink menu. It's certainly not your typical house wine. Oh and pro tip. Save the French toast for last call. It's massive and you can bring it home when you don't finish it. We brought this and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. If I'm not picky the only downfall is that this menu is served in a room off the main dining area. The main dining area being a wide up and super cool looking space. So the side room just can't compete. I'm guessing though this is what helps keep the service super perfect for this all you can eat menu. So I think the trade off is worth it. Dined here for my birthday at the recommendations of my brother. Amazing place. Ambiance: Located near Von Maur at Rosedale Mall, there is parking in front and at the mall. This beautiful restaurant welcomes you with a huge (and heavy) door. The deep mahogany wood, low light and gorgeous floral arrangements set the tone for your experience. There are booths and tables and a very impressive bar for seating. My group of 15 were seated near the open concept kitchen. I made reservations a week ahead, note: they hold a credit card and there is a per person cancellation fee, so confirm all guests. Service: we had two servers and they were excellent. Very attentive and rectified and mishaps without a problem. We didn't get a couple apps and they quickly had the kitchen bring them. The goods: Whew! My goodness. Baldamar has a great selection of food. We started with a couple bread plates with a variety of butters. We had the wings, salads and more as apps. For entrees we had a variety of foods. Baldamar is a very upscale spot and if you're willing to pay for the experience, it will provide. FOOD: I got the 8oz filet mignon (not their "specialty version" but the prime one). It was very well cooked and flavorful. I would have expected a vegetable or something else on the plate (especially for $57 pre-tax and pre-tip) since the steak itself is small. But the flavor was all there and made me forget about sides. (Although I was still hungry and ate an apple fritter at home after lol). Space is elegant and feels upscale. Staff is always friendly and seem to love working there. Grabbed apps, entree and dessert. Came out in decent time. We came here for our anniversary and as soon as you walk in you are met with a darker and elegant atmosphere. We were seated quickly and our server was attentive and helpful with recommendations through out the night. The two cocktails we ordered were good, but the highlight of the night was the appetizers. The Bread of Life with the chimichurri and spreads were bomb, the bread itself was soft with a little crunch. We wanted more! We demolished the chorizo nachos. All the toppings paired well together with the toasted chips. For the main entrees we were a tad underwhelmed not because of the quality of the food but because of the portion size for the price. The Sea Bass with a yuzu glaze was a pairing of delicious Asian flavors, and the lobster roll was good but there was too much bread and not enough lobster. I booked a reservation here to celebrate my husband's long recovery after some major surgery a few months ago. I wanted to find a place that had a patio and food that we would both enjoy. I had been to Baldamar in the past, and even though it is in the parking lot of a busy shopping mall, I remembered the patio was cozy and did not feel at all like a parking lot. The food was also memorable. So, after looking at their menu online, both on OpenTable and their own website, I prepared to order the brick pressed chicken and braised pork shank. The pork shank was as advertised, plentiful, moist, potatoes on point. I would absolutely order again. The chicken, oh the chicken... When I looked at both online menus, it said it came with accoutrements. A starch and veg of some sort. So obviously I did not read the description on the paper menu, because the name was the same, why would the accoutrements differ? Oh how I was wrong. Never in my many decades on this planet have I felt so bamboozled by a restaurant. What was brought out was not a pressed breast with sides, it was a single fat breast sitting in a UTI colored pool of mystery broth. The overwhelmingly gamey scent that wafted off the bowl was off putting at best. At worst, it was the kitchen's dirty dishwater. The chicken itself was tough and dry. The broth, which we were told when I inquired as to the horrific state of pollo island, was a two day reduction of chicken stock. That explains the gaminess. Each bite I brought to my lips was an exercise in resolve. Resolve to finish what I ordered, because, as I mentioned, it was listed there in black and white. I own this misordered fiasco, for had I actually read the description instead of believing the name of a menu item would reflect previous iterations of the same named item, not that it would be a single piece of lone meat in a pool of it's brethren's tears, I would have opted for the fish. read more

Baldamar in Roseville is such a very classy restaurant. I took my daughter, and my daughter-in-law there for the birthdays Sunday; but also my son as he and my daughter in law celebrated a wedding. We had a good time. The brunch buffet was to die for. Pricey though, $59.95 a person. read more

Delicious! I visited on a Saturday night around 5pm and the place was packed but rightfully so. The food, service, and ambiance was perfect. We ordered oysters, Chimichurri Shrimp, Char Grilled Street Corn and the bread is life for appetizers and for main dishes/sides we got Tamarind Braised Short Rib, Miso Marinated Sea Bass, Lobster Mac n Cheese and Steak. The portion sizes were fairly big so make sure you come hungry. All the items we ordered were so flavorful and cooked perfectly. I am so happy that my friend suggested it because I will definitely have to add it to my happy hour rotation now. Happy hour is M-F from 2-4pm, Saturday 11-3 and Sunday ALL DAY We tried the honey siracha wings ($10) and they were so good and surprisingly HOTTER than I expected but I like hot so it was great. Always a pleasant experience at this upscale steak house. We started with cocktails at the bar and the service was great as usual. Our table was ready exactly at the time of our reservation and our server was friendly, professional and knowledgeable about the menu. We started with the bread course and the jalapeno honey butter and the strawberry butter were amazing. Hubby had the wagu ribeye and I had the prime ribeye. Both were cooked to perfection. When we arrived for our Restaurant Week reservation, there were 8+ servers and greeters standing behind the check-in counter with no facial expressions - they didn't look happy. That isn't a good first impression for a restaurant. We were immediately seated in the main dining room and asked the host if they had a booth, but were told they were all reserved. It was so noisy when we sat down and the tables were so close together that my wife could hear the conversation at the table adjacent to us. So we asked if we could move to a quieter area. The manager got involved and moved us to another room that was not as lively. We both ordered their 3 course Restaurant Week special with choice of 3 starters (salads or brussels sprouts), 3 entrées (shrimp w/angel hair pasta, 8 oz filet mignon w/bearnaise sauce, or pork shank), and 2 desserts (chocolate cake w/mouse and ganache, or a sea salt and olive oil parfait w/pistachios). My wife had their frisse house salad, it was over-dressed and soggy as if it had been sitting in the fridge for awhile, but otherwise tasted okay. I had the "flash fried" brussels sprouts that were overcooked, and oily. We both ordered medium rare filet mignons that were properly cooked, but the Béarnaise was bland. To my surprise the steaks arrived centered on a large plate with no garnish except for some finely ground black pepper. They were correctly cooked but not juicy and had no steak drippings. My wife remarked at how large the desserts were as she saw servers walking by, but when each of our 2 desserts arrived at our table, they were tasting portions, about 4 bites each! Our server Paul was always friendly and helpful, but I thought it was unnecessary for him to read and describe every available side dish on the main menu, so I stopped him after the first 4. After our dining experience, and the exorbitant prices for everything on the main menu, including $30 and $40 wines by the glass, I cannot recommend Baldamar. Love this place soooooo much!! I got the ribeye & it was delish!!! The brussel sprouts are 10/10!! Service is exceptional per usual. Interior is dimly lit very quaint. I love the big roomy booths the most especially at the bar. read more

I was lucky enough to experience the party room at Baldamar for our company holiday party. The room was decorated beautifully! The hostess was so upbeat and friendly when we first checked in and our waiter Cameron did a phenomenal job taking care of our group of 13. The drinks were very good and the mocktails were perfect for our non drinking party goers. My steak was cooked beautifully and the sides and appetizers were great for sharing with the group. The Bread is Life appetizer was a crowd favorite and everyone really loved the wings! This was not a cheap dinner but it was high quality food with great service. Great date night or special occasion spot! read more
