The young man at the counter offered me an extensive menu of regular coffees, espresso drinks and specialty drinks, all of which could be made hot or cold. They also have a variety of milk selections. Unfortunately, they were out of skim milk today, but he offered to tweak the amount when I told him that the main reason I usually had skim milk was to enhance the coffee flavor(and their coffee really tasted good). Additionally, he offered to make my drink in my personal cup which was great since I hate to use plastic whenever I can. This location is only a half block from United Hospital and all its various buildings and there is no good coffee within that entire complex. It's definitely worth getting a breath of fresh air and taking a block and a half stroll to have a great cup of Joe! By the way, although I tried hard not to look, their pastry case looked scrumptious, filled with homemade pies by the slice and other goodies. Since they are so close to the hospital it's really nice that they also have a lovely display of fresh cut flowers. Next time I'm down here I'm going to stop in for a meal. If the food is as good as the coffee I think I'll become a regular.

Luckily, the Catzen Café is just a few doors down, so coffee and cats seemed like the perfect place to start. The barista greeted me with a big smile and kindly explained how everything works. I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I grabbed a latte, opened my laptop, and headed into the cat den - where the real fun began. Tim the Enchanter was the first to greet me. Definitely not a werewolf (despite the name), but extremely friendly and very curious about what I was doing on my laptop. Apparently he takes his role as office supervisor very seriously. Then there's Big Cup of Joe, the gorgeous gray-and-white Maine Coon who is absolutely magnificent and looks like he runs the place. Leroy, the laid-back orange tabby, stopped by to say hello, and Halloween Blizzard might be one of the most striking cats I've ever seen. Between great coffee, curious cats, and such a welcoming atmosphere, this place is a gem. As a brand-new neighbor, I can already tell this will become one of my favorite spots. I'll definitely be back... and next time I'm bringing my cat- and coffee-obsessed friends with me.

You can either enjoy your visit viewing all the cats through the windows that wrap around the cat room or book some time and enter the room where all the cats reside. I don't remember all the rules if you're only allowed to just pet them, but there are a lot of cats. At the time of my visit, there was a pregnant cat that was staying downstairs in the privacy of her own room, but you could view her on the cat cam. The cats had the freedom of going downstairs through their own private entrance. I did try the breakfast sandwich, which the bread I think either was mochi bread or had syrup on it, it was slightly chewy. I liked it, but it would get stuck in your teeth.

It didn't have much espresso, so it ended up tasting more like flavored milk. They do offer a nice variety of milk options at no extra charge, which is a plus. but still the drinks are very expensive for what you get. There's some seating inside and parking behind the building, which makes it convenient. The shop was cute but on the smaller side also the tables weren't very clean when we were there. The staff wasn't overly friendly and didn't make it feel especially welcoming.

The selection is better at the Minneapolis location, but the St. Paul location has its own charm and still plenty of options for people who are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. The inside is so cool and really gives a historic look into Saint Paul. Everywhere you can find a bustling amount of people having conversations and enjoying coffee. The staff here are wonderful often giving compliments to people coming in and saying hello to the regulars. This is a wonderful neighborhood and a wonderful coffee shop! Now, for the coffee. I love their coffee - whether it's a latte or a Matcha or iced or hot it's always amazing!! (I would gladly drive the 40 minutes out here to have their coffee). Super friendly staff that seem to genuinely want to get to know you and your pup (if you have one). Love that they are dog friendly. Affogato here was top notch. I ordered a round of focaccia. The counter person offered to cut it for me, but I demurred. I expected to tear off a sample and take the rest of the 8" round with me. About the only other times I have had focaccia, it needed some butter, so I asked for a small scoop (melon ball size) of lemon butter. It was fantastic! I haven't gorged on a baked product like this in a very long time. The bread was light, chewy and so flavorful. The bright lemon butter could not be wasted. Despite the fantastic flavors, I still dabbed butter on pieces I tore off. There was nothing left to take home. I will be back for sure!
