Our reg sushi restaurant was closed at the time we were in town, so we looked for another. Found Fighting Fish. Everything we ordered was delicious, very tasteful, not drowned in sauces. We began w Tiger Tail roll and the Sushi Nachos. The nachos are the best! Delectable! After these, we decided to try the Alligator Roll; what a cute presentation. And also delicious. Uhm, this place has been on Boulevard since 2020? Who knew?! I have probably walked past several times, but due to the appearance of the outside have never thought of checking it out. I feel like if you don't know about it, you don't know about it, and maybe they want it that way. But, since someone did finally tell me about it recently, we tried it out this week and I would definitely go back! Great happy hour from 5-6 daily, with $5 white and red wine + rail drinks, classic sushi roles, and $1 oysters! Yes please! We had a dozen oysters, which were huge (!), the mini flaming tuna nachos, a shrimp tempura role, and a spicy tuna roll. The nachos are very spicy, much more so than we expected, still very good but just a word of warning if you are not into very hot food. The spicy tuna roll followed suit (bad on me for not realizing I was basically ordering two of the same thing, lol). I have had "spicy" tuna or salmon rolls many other places and have never really gotten an actually spicy roll. That is not the case at Fighting Fish, however, so if you like it hot I suggest those options. They also have several specialty rolls and sushi burritos! Finally, the decor is really cute and much fancier than I was expecting. There is a nice sized white marble bar with comfy green leather stools, and lots of tables with nice blue leather chairs or mid-century modern wooden chairs spread around the restaurant. The bar tender was also great and brought us some aioli and extra eel sauce to cool off the spicy tuna a bit (much appreciated!). So yeah, very glad we checked it out and for sure will be back. Fighting Fish was the highlight of a weekend trip to Richmond! I've had a decent amount of sushi and this was hands down my favorite so far. We made a reservation for Fighting Fish for a special occasion/weekend and when we arrived we were greeted with champagne on the house. Who does that?? It was such a kind gesture and we immediately felt at home. I don't typically love champagne but the type they served was a crowdpleaser for our group of 7! The sushi rolls were incredible - very fresh and packed full of fish. We all were stuffed by the end of the meal. I'd also recommend the fish tower as an app - super tasty! read more

We loved our experience at Fighting Fish! The location is lovely inside -- I had passed the outside a few times and frankly not been impressed. It's a great date night atmosphere inside with nice soft lighting. My friend and I ordered some appetizers to start. We ordered half a dozen oysters and the flaming tuna anchors. I will be honest I am not the world's biggest oyster fan. However I loved these -- think they were blue points? -- texture and size was great. The flaming tuna nachos were great, although we did note that it is very hard visually to tell apart the tomatoes and tuna and we felt like we could've used more of the latter, less of the former. For these nachos to really hit their mark, you need some tuna with every bite. I thought I got a picture of these but I guess not! We ordered two rolls and it turned out they came with miso soup as well which was a nice surprise. We got the tiger tempura roll which I really loved. The other roll was a salmon roll, I believe the ruby roll. Both of us found that one to be just a little off with the texture -- a little softer maybe than we would've liked. I think that is partially due to the nature of salmon sushi, which can be just a little slipppery. All in all I enjoyed fighting fish. I wish this location was open for lunch takeout because I think a sushi burrito lunch would be just fantastic! read more

Mid. I don't think I would visit this restaurant again when coming to RVA. went here with a party of 6 and it took almost 1 hour for our food to arrive and when it came the furkake fries were cold. Delicious hidden gem in Scott's Addition. Staff was very friendly and accommodating to getting my friend and I situated. We started with some drinks, I had the lemongrass martini which was pretty good. They provided miso soup to start the meal, which was a nice surprise, but nothing spectacular. We were stuffed from our morning visit to ZZQ, but wanted to try this place before we even came down to Richmond based on their Happy Hour menu and especially the buck a shuck. The restaurant is small and cozy near Scott's Addition and the interior is pretty nicely decorated, definitely a nice spot to bring a date. We were planning on ordering entrees as well, but decided just to get a dozen oysters (bluepoints), edamame, mini flaming tuna nachos, sweet and spicy tofu bites, a shrimp tempura roll, and bok choy. Everything was above average and the happy hour pricing made it even better. The oysters were fresh and decent, I'm not a huge fan of blue points, but that is on me not them. They gave you a crap ton of edamame for $3 and always something nice to munch on. Flaming tuna nachos, sweet and spicy tofu bites, and the shrimp tempura were all tasty as well, nothing amazing, but very good for the price. Bok choy was also tasty and nice to have on a trip with little to no vegetables. The service was also very good and attentive.
