Tuna tower was excellent and larger than I expected, and surprisingly the French fries with wasabi ketchup were large and excellent as well. 15 pc sashimi was beautiful and more than I expected. Others at the table had dragon roll, FF burrito, and eel rolls. One other review made the comment that it was an excellent value and I would agree with this. Certainly not inexpensive, but the quality and portion size made it so I would happily come again. My daughter said lunch is an even better deal, I will need to try that out. If you like raw fish, Fighting Fish is the place for you. They have things like tuna tartare, tuna nachos, shrimp ceviche, sushi burritos, sushi rolls, poke, and more. It's a pretty Americanized sushi spot. The fish quality is pretty good. What brings me back is the creative ways they do their food here. I appreciate their aesthetic. The vintage Japanese posters make this place trendy. My favorite thing is their zebra wallpaper in their green lit bathroom. A lot of their stuff leaves me wanting more. It's a 3.5 stars kind of place for me. Things can either lack flavor or have too much of something. For example, I find the miso to be too bland or the tuna nachos too have too much sauce. I went to Fighting Fish with a friend on Friday evening, and we were seated right away. The restaurant is easy to miss with a relatively nondescript storefront, but inside is welcoming and tastefully decorated with Japanese poster-style art. There are both tables and bar seating; the space is a little narrow, and the tables are all on the smaller side, so I'm not sure if it would be the best place to come with a very large party. I was really surprised at how great the happy hour was the first time I came here. It is a cozy restaurant with a small bar, but you can easily become a regular here. I've had great service every time I've been. I am a big fan of all things sushi and sashimi, so this place is right up my alley. My favorites are the fighting fish tower and the tuna tartare! My friend and I came here for the Happy Hour (5-6PM). Honestly, the deal for happy hour is really GOOD! Of the three sushi restaurants I have been to in Richmond so far, this is by far my favorite. Christine, the GM, was great. The sushi here was pretty solid and I was psyched to see they have Uni on the menu. I guess it's California Gold. It's not the best Uni I've ever had but the fact they have it at a restaurant in Richmond is awesome. The Sake and Whisky seletion (not e for Japanese Whisky) here is solid. They had a bottle of Dassai 45 Sake which I indulged in and the Mizunara Cask Japanese Whisky which was solid. I have visited Fighting Fish a few times now and always have a good experience. They have a creative and exciting menu adding some Asian fusion along with the traditional sushi options. Be aware that if you order any of the special sushi items they are huge. The table and bar layout is good for maintaining conversations within your party. There's a full bar along with a decent wine and beer menu. I do like trying something new from the wide range of Japanese whisky's and/or beers. The service is above average in fact it seems that the staff if very relaxed, confident and always accommodating. To me this shows that the restaurant is managed very well. They offer takeout and pickup which seems to flow smoothly. I noticed various customers come in and picked with no issues and without much waiting. Visiting from NYC so comparing this sushi spot to a place back home. The sushi was pretty good but nothing too special. The size of the sushi was bigger compared to home but not as fresh tasting. With the crab roll it tasted all like one kind of crab rather than the variety in the roll so the flavors didn't come through as much. We started with the large house sake, and the Pino white and they were both real good! They offered us complementary miso soup and it was delicious! Hear me out. I'm going to give them another chance bc I've always heard such good things but I came here recently on a Monday afternoon and had such a long drawn out experience. I sat at the bar since I was alone and honestly thought service would be quick. Unfortunately there was only 1 server during the lunch hour and no one working the bar. I've come here when it was first opened in Jackson ward and then moved to their new location at Arthur Boulevard. If you're craving a sushi burrito, these are the guys to get it from. I think their hours have changed and are only opened in the later evening/dinner. I'm not 100% sure if their dining space is open yet but highly recommend picking it up to enjoy at home. We then ordered the dragon roll, sunset roll, firecracker roll, tiger tempura roll, shogun's armor roll and 3 classic rolls which were all amazing. The star of the show for us was the sunset roll and the tiger tempura roll! At the end, they gave a mochi dessert for my friend's birthday! I am so sad. That we were just passing through Richmond and we live 7 hours away from this restaurant. Cause there were so many amazing flavors in the Flaming Tuna Nachos. They had a good spicy kick to them, but it wasn't so hot that it made my eyes water- just the perfect amount of heat for the average spice tolerant person. Those nachos were like nothing I have ever eaten before. It was a good size for my husband and I to share as an appetizer before we ate our tiger roll. We finally understand why they are called tiger rolls, because of the beautiful presentation of this roll. Don't be discouraged by the outside of the restaurant when you are walking by, it is worth a try! From the outside you can't tell if it is open, but they have made it very cute and trendy inside. There was a good sized bar with different options but we ordered some Jasmine tea with our dinner and started off with the Fighting Fish Tower. The wonton chips that came with it were very thin, light and crisp and paired well with the fish. There was a lot of avocado and rice though. For dinner, I ordered the Electric Eel Rito Sushi Burrito and my boyfriend ordered the Grilled Mackeral. Both were very good. I really liked the burrito but the sweet potato chips that came with it were pretty stale. Was slightly disappointed with those as it definitely seemed like those had been sitting out for a while. I tried the new Scott's Addition location of Fighting Fish and WOW! I am so impressed. The food was absolutely delicious, online ordering was really easy, and pickup was on time. I will absolutely be a regular here! I got the Fighting Fish Burrito with salmon, which is a jumbo burrito-sized seaweed roll filled with your choice of fish, sushi rice, kani, masago, avocado, pickled red onion and daikon, garlic lime, kabayaki, sesame seeds, and a house special sauce. I know a sushi burrito sounds weird and I was worried it would be just an Instagram friendly gimmick, but I was wrong. It was SO good! The huge chunks of salmon were so fresh and the roll had the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and acidic. It also came with a side of super thin sweet potato chips, which added a great crunchy element. It was the perfect amount of food and really reasonably priced; basically the cost of one specialty roll but twice the portion size. My friends got the Lochness burrito and the Don Diablo poke bowl with tuna, and they similarly raved about their meals. We're already planning our next takeout night. COVID precautions: The restaurant is currently only doing takeout and delivery service, no sit down dining. Only one customer is allowed in the restaurant at a time and they must wear a mask.
