This has got to be the best spot in the Richmond area to get sushi. I don't live close to it, but I've found myself in Midlothian a lot recently and have made sure to grab some delicious sushi from here. First, I want to shoutout the incredibly sweet server I get here each time. I don't know her name, but this spot feels family owned and she is always beyond sweet and attentive. There is a lot of free parking out front and near this spot. It's in a sort of strip mall and can be a little confusing to get to, but if you follow your GPS it should be fine. Dining in or takeout are both great options here. You get your food quickly either way. I love their signature purple rice that comes with the sushi here. I also adore their nigiri choices. On my first visit years ago, I got a very yummy dragon roll. On my last few visits, I've enjoyed their avo salmon roll, white tuna nigiri, scallop nigiri, and miso soup. Service is always good and their food is always fresh and delicious regardless of whether you're dining in or carrying out. We go here a least once a month. Lots of seating and it's not too noisy. It also has a good mix of authentic sushi options and Americanized fare. So, if you're someone who likes sushi for sushi's shake you're going to be happy and if you like rice and things that are less adventurous you'll be safe. There are also some Korean options on the menu. If you're snooty about sake you will have comments to make. I'd say order to share and steer away from the fixed meals if you are eating with a party. The una don (eel) is a full meal unto itself. Parking is very easy and there are good coffee choices within walking distance. My only word of warning is that the main road is heavy traffic. If you want to make a left turn, you'll have to be patient (or better yet: take a right then a U turn). read more

Ducked in last night arrived around 6pm. I was seated promptly it was just me, myself and I. Drink, appetizer and dinner order was placed and my appetizers arrived quickly. Well I'm pretty agreeable and was moved to the sushi bar. Just offered apologies but my nice relaxing dinner was interrupted not making me feel happy about the situation. I get that mistakes happen but you could have comped my gyoza or offered me a discount for your mistake. Service: 5 Stars. The service here is great, it's a well oiled machine in terms of service. Food: 3.5 Stars (what we ordered). The ginger salad was 5 stars. The rolls were 3.5 stars. The crunch tasted of oil that wasn't fresh so I would ask for the crunch to be removed. I think the quality of fish is good so I would probably suggest getting sashimi instead of speciality rolls. We came here (over 100 miles) because of the high Yelp ratings and we were so happy to make the trip. The shop is small, quaint, very clean and staff is very attentive to your needs explaining the options you have to make sure you get your needs met. We ordered the sashimi and sushi combo which was the freshest in Virginia!!!! The takoyaki was a new delicacy for me but the wife was right, it was so good. The ebi, also top notch and crispy. Would you like a side of dirty rubber band with your dish? This is a perfect place to be! I took my family out for dinner not too long ago and found a thick, dirty rubber band inside my sushi deluxe platter rolled up next to picked ginger and sushi. When I notified my server, her unacceptable response ruined my dining experience. First and only comment she made was "oh there is that rubber band my sushi chef lost. He was looking for it".. WTF??? I wanted to be as polite as possible as mistakes do happen, but seriously??? So the guy loses his dirty rubber band while making good behind the counter and doesn't bother to check on the food before they get served? To make matters worse, servers have audacity to act like it is not a big deal and was just happy that I found their lost rubber band? No apologies or explanation of any kind. Before I had the time to take a picture, she rushed to get the rubber band back to its rightful owner. I ordered the chirashi sashimi lunch special, which came with a soup and salad. There was a decent assortment of fish and each type had 3 slices, which is generous compared to most other places. My friend ordered the Melvin roll (spicy tuna and cucumber topped with salmon, tuna, spicy mayo, and eel sauce) and toro power roll (chopped toro topped with seared toro, poke sauce, scallion). The portion size was great; there were 10 pieces of the Melvin roll and 8 pieces of the toro power roll (one of their specials). Service was super friendly and the atmosphere wasn't too loud. My wife and I love the whole energy of Katana. It's very calming. During the holidays they'll have downbeat piano/Christmas music playing softly. The waiters are attentive, but not demanding. The tone of conversation is friendly and relatively quiet. And I have to say the sushi is some of the best in the Richmond area. Even though it's inconvenient we will drive out to midlo to get this sushi over closer spots. Portions are large and the fish is quality. Sometimes if I order a tuna special the chef will throw in some fattier tuna to try. Fantastic. Cucumber salad is gr and my wife and I tried to deduce what the dressing was made with. So far from my experience and research, this is the best sushi restaurant for fish quality and selection in the Richmond area. I'm posting a picture of the specials board and please look that over -- there are varieties of prized fish you will not see at other sushi spots: aji, chu-toro and o-toro, quality uni, bronzini, hamachi belly! For the most part this place delivered on my excitement when viewing the menu. Hamachi belly was a standout, but generally all of the sushi fish was succulent and distinct in flavor. Of course I would love if they had real wasabi. My main disappointment is the rice. They use black/purple rice due to it being more nutritious, which is a great idea, but something about it was lacking in terms of texture (nigiri and maki fall apart easily) and taste (could use more rice vinegar). Also there is a chef's omakase! It looks like a great deal for omakase at around $45 and I'm looking forward to retuning just for that. Katana deserves recognition for their kind wait staff, easy atmosphere, and excellent sushi. We are usually seated without wait though we've walked into a busy Friday night on more than one occasion. Tonight we waited about 5 minutes which was great for a full house. Sushi rolls and sashimi are consistently fresh and delicious. Their rolls are inventive which balances nicely with the traditional cuts of fish and other specials that appear frequently on their whiteboard. The o'toro, calamari, and aji are very good if you find yourself on a night where they're available. Katana is the best sushi experience around. read more
