I had a lunch box set to go with miso soup, salad, white tuna avocado roll and spicy salmon roll. It hit the spot for my sushi craving. The soup was just like any miso and salad was great refreshing with homemade dressing. A different style than I've had before. Both rolls had something like panko crumbs inside for crunchy texture. The fish was fresh and good. The spicy salmon was cut salmon with a dry spice in it, it wasn't my favorite kind of spicy salmon I've had before. Other spicy salmon is usually a mix. The sushi is always decent, but I can't get over how bad the teriyaki chicken was. It was boiled chicken with watery sauce added on top. There was a review on this dish in 2023 that was spot on. Really dissapointed they haven't improved the teriyaki chicken since then. It is truly the worst teriyaki chicken I have ever had. 2 stars because the sushi is usually pretty good. But it's a borderline crime to charge $15 for boiled chicken, 2 piece of broccoli, and a small scoop of rice. I could make a better teriyaki chicken in my sleep and I'm not even that good of a cook. I was hoping this would be good, because it's close to where I live, but it's quite bad, especially for the price. As soon as I opened up the bag, I knew I was in trouble, because the ginger was dyed red. The soy sauce they include has caramel color in it. All of this is just to try and explain that this food is very low quality. In general, the food was flavorless, and I did not finish my salmon roll, because it tasted low quality, which always grosses me out. I'm sure the people who run this place are very nice, but I will never eat here again. read more

Definitely one of my favorite places to grab sushi. If you have at least three people, I recommend going for the party tray. I believe it comes with 2 soups which makes it seem like it's meant for 2 people but it is so much food! The volcano roll is a fan favorite with my family and so we usually order an extra to satisfy everyone but I personally love the sweet potato roll that comes with the tray. The tray also comes with classic spicy tuna and California rolls as well as a couple others. All for under $40! The wait staff in my experience can be a little gruff but not off-putting. Especially given how much I enjoy the food! Recently it seems like the name may have changed to Jing Sushi? DH and I were looking for something new and close by for Friday Night Date Night and remembered Mai Sushi. Tucked away in the alley of the Village Shopping Center, we have walked by plenty of times and have said "we need to try this place". Well, we finally did. They have a pretty extensive menu of rolls and such. DH and decided on the squid salad and seaweed salad to start and the Party Tray #1 for dinner ($34 for 6 different rolls). Both the appetizer salads were delicious - crunchy and full of flavor! DH declared "they make a damned good salad". Yes, sweetie, they sure do. The Party Tray also comes with miso soups, so we had those to enjoy as well. Then the main event arrived. 6 rolls is a LOT of food. The presentation was lovely, including the flaming volcano roll, and we could not wait to dive in. It was as much of a treat for our tastebuds as it was for our eyes. I think my favorite was the Volcano Roll. We tried all of the rolls but it was a lot of food and ended up having to ask for a to-go box as our eyes were obviously bigger than our stomachs. But it meant we had a nice lunch the next day! On the way out, we noticed a delivery guy. So not only is this place convenient for pick up on the way home from work, but they deliver too. I have a feeling DH and I will be dining with Mai Sushi more often. read more

This sushi is perfectly fine. It satisfies the craving and it's main appeal the few times I've been has simply been it's close proximity so I could walk there. If you have the time to go elsewhere, I'd recommend trying a different sushi place since there's nothing special about Jing's sushi. I'm always looking for great sushi in Richmond, especially delivery during covid! A lot of sushi places don't seem to be delivering right now, and it can be hard to tell which are good. I tried Jing on a whim, and it did not disappoint! The sushi was fresh, perfectly sized, and delicious! I got spicy tuna and eel rolls, my two go-tos, both were great! Small and simple sushi restaurant with excellent service, excellent prices, and excellent food. I have pretty high standards for my sushi, having grown up in SoCal and surrounded by dozens upon dozens of sushi places competing for customers. This was definitely a nice place to go for good sushi! A wide variety of rolls that never went over $14 and all the ones I tried were delicious. Not over reliant on flash, great substance. The sushi chef was even willing to go off the menu and create a soft shell crab roll for me after I asked. That's the kind of service I like and why I'm going the full five stars. A minor drawback-no liquor license yet so no sake. However, I will not hold that against them and look forward to hopefully returning and having some sake and sushi soon. read more

Jing is a perfectly decent sushi place with 8 or 10 tables, nestled into the back of the village shopping center. While it is not the best sushi in Richmond, it is certainly not the worst, and it is very reasonably priced. Everything about Jing is, "good." If it matters to you, beware the restaurant does not serve alcohol. read more

As the only close sushi place by my work place, I had to come here for my sushi craving days. Food - Sadly, they only have a few lunch specials which was the first reason a star is docked. I ended up ordering the salmon poke bowl and a salmon roll whic was not on the lunch special. The salmon roll was sad in quality because the rice didn't have vinegar in it, as I've mentioned before is a key essential to good sushi. Also the size and quality of the salmon was mediocre and didn't taste fresh. The pokebowl was better and you can taste more flavors but it was essentially deconstructed sushi and the size of the bowl was a little small compared to the price. So convenient and delicious! They changed the menu around a little since the ownership changed (maybe a year or two ago?) but the food is still just as delicious. Mai Sushi is extremely underwhelming. I came here on a quiet rainy Tuesday night. The restaurant is tucked in at the Three Chopt Shopping Center, by walking down the alleyway in between the shops. The restaurant isn't elbow-to-elbow small and they maximize the space inside. I ordered the miso soup, house salad, and cucumber eel roll. The miso soup was fine, on-par with most restaurants. The waitress forgot about my house salad so after asking about it I was given a small bowl of just romaine lettuce and then the ginger dressing just plopped on top. It wasn't mixed and it was extremely difficult to mix the dressing into the salad. The cucumber eel roll was just meh. Service was more on the terrible side. We weren't checked up on at all during the meal. I was pretty disappointed but maybe I'll give this place another try. read more

I went to try Mai Sushi on a Saturday night around 7:15-7:30 PM. Mai Sushi came highly recommended by a couple of people I know, and I love sushi... I'm a huge fan of Tokyo Sushi, but was hoping to find something comparably good closer to home. When I walked in to place a to-go order, two people ahead of me were waiting and looking a little less than thrilled, but the place was packed, I figured also a good sign. I placed an order full of sushi rolls, totaling about $63 and some change... I made it an even $70 and the gentleman told me it would be about 30 minutes. No problem. I'm happy to wait for good sushi, and it was obvious they were busy. I went to wait in the car and came back about 25 minutes later. Still no sushi. No problem. I waited another 15 minutes. Now 40 minutes. So I asked the server who I ordered from how much longer he thought it would be, it had been quite a while, and other orders were coming up, including people who had sat down to eat after I placed my to go order. He informed me they were working on it right then, so I said no problem. Another ten more minutes go by and I stand up and ask if it's actually coming, because if not I would prefer to just cancel my order, as it's been about an hour at this point. The gentleman who took my order launched into a rude tirade about how he has no control over the kitchen, to which I responded that he himself quoted 30 minutes, and it had been twice that long. He pointedly asked me what did I want him to do about it, and told me I needed to be patient. I told him I had been more than patient at this point and I would like my money back or my order so I could please leave. He again told me it was coming and started storming around throwing my items into a plastic bag and collecting my order from all over. However, it seemed that the volcano roll I ordered had not been started, so I stood there for another 5-10 minutes waiting as another person came after me and got their to-go order and paid. Finally, I asked if I could please just have my money refunded and to cancel the order. The server shouted in another language at the sushi rollers (presumably to tell them to stop finishing my order) and then shouted at me I WILL GIVE YOU YOUR MONEY BACK! Then, he voided my transaction and slammed the receipt on the counter. As I left with my daughter, he murmured some expletive in another language under his breath. I never actually tried their sushi, but won't ever go back to a place where they treat customers (who have spent 63 dollars and tipped 10% on a to go order) like that. Based on their previous rave reviews, I guess the guy was having an off night, but there is never a reason to treat people that horribly. The menu isn't huge but they do have a nice variety of sushi! I got the tuna rolls and a bowl of rice! It was filling and the price was great for how full I was! According to my meat-eating friends, vegans really shouldn't know anything about sushi. However, the majority of them agree that Mai Sushi is pretty good and reasonably priced for Richmond. Everything I've ever had was fresh. The dining area is rarely crowded even on a Friday night. Servers are always pleasant. The service is usually very prompt and my tea or water has always been refilled quickly. Veggie Sushi Highlights: Standard assortment of cucumber, avocado, carrot and asparagus-based rolls. No oshinko (radish), plum, mushroom or pickle, but they make up for this with tofu skin. Miso soup has fish. Salad that comes with veggie combo has mayo in it. Veggie sushi is not just slapped on the plate, often times the chef arranges it in a pleasant and interesting manner. read more

Let's just say I took the food and ran in humiliation. On to the real review: this place is a gem. I didn't give it 5 stars because I need to explore other RVA options before I can name it the best. Few people know about Mai because it's back in an alleyway where you can't see it from the village front. However, once you've found it, life changes. The restaurant itself is rather small but I've never had to wait. (Although, I mostly go during the week.) In the past the service was iffy, but they have a new woman hostessing who is fabulous. The sushi is excellent, and well presented. NOTE: They currently don't have brown rice. Although, the chef has been working on it and said to expect the option in the near future! I went here on a first date several months ago, per the recommendation of a friend of mine. The place is small and cozy, but it has a really nice atmosphere. As far as the sushi - this is some of the best in RVA. Be prepared to wait on a Friday or Saturday night for a table. We ordered one of the smaller platters for $30 or so, and it was gorgeous, including the middle being on fire! Whoa. Very cool. Lots of selections of stuff to pick around and try out as well. The sushi itself was moist and delicious. Service was a little slow, but nothing to complain about - I only noticed because when we went (Wednesday evening), there was only one other table occupied. Sort of a hole-in-the-wall location, tucked away in a shopping center, Mai Sushi never fails to impress and truly satisfy my craving for sushi. There's just something about how fresh their seafood tastes and how spot on their rice is (not too sweet, not too sticky, slightly warm, and packed just enough to hold together) that sets them apart from the other guys. I've had their sashimi (which really showcases how fresh their fish is), salmon teriyaki (awesome, definitely homemade), most of their nigiri choices, and tons of their traditional and specialty rolls. Once again, the freshness is what sets them apart. One of my favorite things to get when I'm with a few other people is their Party 1 tray. I can't remember the exact combination of rolls, but it's something like: avocado roll, spicy tuna, spicy salmon, california roll, sweet potato, new york roll, and a volcano roll. It's a lot of sushi for a really good price. Another favorite to try is their Naruto Roll, it has no rice, just lots of fresh fish wrapped in cucumber, topped with ponzu...delicious! Effectively, Haru sushi turned into Mai sushi due to (as I understand it) the addition of the head sushi chef from the much loved Akida's, who had taken a coast-hopping sabbatical. The food, however, has only gotten better, raising an already very high bar. I tend to avoid most other sushi places in richmond for anything other than nigiri, and even Mai's nigiri is quite good. I typically order lunch combo A which includes a California roll, shrimp tempura roll, Miso soup and a ginger salad, all for about 10 bucks. I am usually pretty full at this point, which is tough for me and sushi outings. The host/waiter is a bit abrupt and short - you sit down and he immediately asks you what you want. Although, I don't mind it, it is part of the experience for me and my lunch partner. You can be in a out of there in 30-45 minutes, which is awesome for a lunch break in a busy shopping center with businesses everywhere. read more

I love Jing and have been coming here for three years now. Their sushi is pretty good quality for the price and it's in a great location. However, tonight I went and ordered my usual two rolls and asked for my order to be ready "ASAP" (usually this means 10-15 minutes). It took over an hour and a half to get the rolls and when I asked for any clarification on when the order would be ready, I was given nothing. I was also not the only person out there. From any given time, there were 5-10 of us waiting for our orders. When looking inside, there was only one Sushi chef preparing orders and another person taking orders on the phone. I understand that it is COVID and there needs to be a certain level of social distancing, but that was borderline ridiculous. I might go back to Jing after the pandemic is over, but for now, they have lost my business. read more

The salmon did not have a fishy smell or after taste that I feel can be inherent with salmon. The miso soup was okay along with the salad. However the California roll was absolutely one of the best California Rolls I've ever had. This location is a little hidden as the doorway is in the alley, and I was expecting the inside to be a little larger. Any graduate of the University of Richmond knows this place too well. First things first, do not be thrown out by the location. Yes, it is on the inside of a strip mall. But look past that because I promise you, it is worth it. The sushi is really good and their combination dinner options are great. I almost always do the Maki or Vegetarian combo and ask for two salads instead of the soup/salad that comes with it. The spicy tuna is amazing!! Mai Sushi is easily one of my favorite places in Richmond to get sushi; I only wish it was a little closer to me. They are located in the Villiage Shopping Center, but not directly on the front line. You will need to walk down the middle aisle of the center to find them, on your right. I have not eating at Mai Sushi, but I have ordered take out several times. Most times I like to keep it simple with Spicy Tuna rolls and Eel Rolls, but they also have several specialty rolls. The Village Roll is my very favorite thing to get here - spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and seaweed salad. The Pink Lady roll and Sweet Heart roll are also great choices.
