Firstly, I would like to share that the way I stumbled upon this restaurant was really quite unconventional. I was in Richmond, driving and helping my son move into a new place around the corner from Trouvaille. Unfortunately, I got a flat tire and pulled into the alleyway next to the restaurant. A passerby stopped and chatted with us a bit and then offered to help change the tire. He was incredibly kind and patient and he took time to show me and my son how to do it correctly. Turns out it was Joe, the owner and chef of Trouvaille. To show my appreciation, I returned to have dinner there that night after an incredibly exhausting day. Let me just tell you, and I am not just saying this to be nice, the food is absolutely exquisite. I had the hanger steak with a cognac reduction sauce and it was divine. Crab bread? Was a mini loaf of bread wearing a 4" tall crab costume. We got one, followed by two more. Delicious. We tried several entrees across 7 people. I pivoted from the black cod to a burger on the waitstaff recommendation. A bit salty, which is not an issue for me, and awesome fries. Closed sharing the devil's food cake. Did you know "Trouvaille" in French means "find?" And not just "find," in the everyday use, but to find as if you are so fortunate! Well! Never has such a delightful eatery been so aptly named! Trouvaille is a glorious find indeed! Mind you, if you read my reviews you will see I know a bit about good cocktails and better food! So context: I was completely blown away by this little tucked away spot on Lombardy Street in Richmond's glorious Fan neighborhood. To begin: Top shelf alcohol, merged into glorious soothing cocktails expertly blended and presented as swanky as any NYC or SF bar! If you like an expertly blended Manhattan this is the place. Next time the old fashioned or anything frankly on the menu! For dinner: I had the gnocchi with fresh spring peas in a light cream sauce with the kind of tender savory chicken one dreams of. The whole thing was an imaginative yet comforting fusion of Japanese-Italian-American comfort food. Think: deconstructed chicken pot pie! Hubby had the short ribs which melted in my mouth alongside a perfectly crispy yet tender Japanese inspired (Korean?) rice cake next to perfectly unctuous kimchi!! Just amazing! I traveled the world in every bite! Umami perfection. But I skipped telling you about the appetizer of fresh spring salad with arugula, burrata, and just fresh everything. The dressing was a tiny but overpowering but totally tolerable because of the perfect tang and balance of creaminess. So good and the serving was beyond generous! We ordered delicious Homemade... like a truly homemade fresh loaf of bread arrived with perfectly not-too-sweet strawberry (what?) butter!! And save room for dessert! The oh so thin crepe cake with uh-mazing strawberry sauce and sweet (not too) crème was just light and pleasing. Again I could feel/taste the Japanese influence And then! An on the house chocolate pot de crepe had me swooning! This with our Malbec wine was like heaven on earth. Finally? The bill. So freaking reasonable! We spared no expense and had a bottle of wine! Nothing but pleasure here. The bill was a pleasure to pay! And I love thoughtful decor! I am happy to report: The vibe is incredibly cool, too. Think Gothic-minimalism meets the gilded age. Best cauliflower I've ever had--savory. My burger was good and the bun was almost like a biscuit. The duck was good accordimg to my wife. The wine selection needs some higher end wines to choose from, however. The beets were lacking any punch at all and need a revised recipe, Overall, still 4 stars--service was good and the ambiance / vibe / atmosphere nice for a date. I absolutely love this space. They did something with those black walls, the decor, maximizing on space and utilizing separate dining areas, and that traditional ceiling in the back just screams Richmond. The filet was magnificent... cooked, seasoned, and adorned perfectly - next time they just need to dump the cognac miso cream sauce on our table! I love the potato pave & I could use 5 more of those daily. That said, I'm highly motivated to try the burger and fries because that also looked amazing. The rockfish had a good flavor but we caught it on the one night where it was maybe a little overcooked and under-seasoned. I may give it another try, but there are so many options on this menu. I've got to try them all. The chocolate torte was absolutely phenomenal. Pro tip: ask for a little flaky sea salt to accompany your dessert. Rich, decadent.... No flour. Like straight up ganache without being too overwhelming. Service was great. Jennie seems to be a staple around here and I like that for all of us. My fiance and I had a really lovely date night at Trouvaille. They had a wonderful menu filled with delicious options. We went on a weeknight and service was a little slower, but everyone was extra sweet. I got a yummy glass of rose and my fiancé ordered a beer. We decided to do family-style so we could try more things on the menu. Ordering the bread is a must! It's beyond delicious and the butters that come with it are amazing. I liked the crab toast and how fresh it was. The steak tartare was also delightful. I think I was expecting more flavors in the duck breast dish, but it was still good. It's a lovely and intimate restaurant. I really want to come back for their brunch and to try their cocktails. It's wonderful for a date night or to meet up with a group (I saw some people doing a business meeting that evening). We biked here, but there was street parking nearby. First time at Trouvaille and it certainly won't be our last! I went last night with friends to celebrate my birthday, and start to finish was a great experience. We shared some house bread, steak tartare, and duck dumplings (not pictured). Everything was divine, but the duck dumplings were memorable!! Highly recommend trying it, even if you're weary about duck. For the entree, I had the beef short ribs and wow, SO good. The short ribs were tender, juicy, and full of flavor. They were accompanied with house made kimchi and it was out of the world. I'm not a huge kimchi fan in general, but I'm convinced they have converted me. Absolutely incredible. Where to begin? First, the decor. Sleek, cozy, and well- spaced tables. Service was friendly and relaxed. The bartender was also our server and she seemed a bit over-extended. Their cocktail menu is creative and we enjoyed an old-fashioned and the Lombardy. As for the food - wow, just wow. We started with the duck dumplings and cauliflower with green Thai curry. The dumplings were tender, generously filled, and served in a lovely broth. The cauliflower was amazing. The combination of black bean purée and Thai curry made for delicious bites. For entrees we got the short ribs and duck breast, with two sides of potato pave. The short ribs were unlike any we ever had, served with kimchi and crispy rice. Delectable! The duck breast was perfectly cooked to medium rare, with crispy skin. The potatoes were to die for. Crispy, tender layers with a small dollop of horseradish sauce and a bit of roe. For dessert we had beignets with ginger ice cream. So good! If the rest of the menu is as good as what we tried, Trouvaille will be one of our favorite restaurants in RVA. read more

My partner and I stopped by for dinner on Valentine's Day. Parking is limited to street parking, but that's expected--it's Richmond. I love the restaurant's high ceilings and minimalistic dark interior. From the outside, it doesn't look very large, but inside, it's surprisingly spacious with a beautifully romantic ambiance. Our server was incredibly kind and attentive--I wish I had caught her name to give her a proper shoutout. We started with the house bread, which was decent but didn't particularly stand out. The salt flakes on top were unexpected, and the garlic butter wasn't quite enough for us to finish the bread. For our entrées, I ordered the Steak Frites, and my partner had the Rockfish. My steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the Cognac Cream Sauce complemented it beautifully, elevating the overall flavor. As is our habit, my partner and I sampled each other's dishes. However, I wasn't aware that the Rockfish was served with cashew cream (totally my fault for not reading the menu enough), which led to an allergic reaction. We immediately informed our server, and thankfully, my reaction wasn't too severe. She acted quickly to replace my dish to prevent further cross-contamination and mentioned that her son also has a nut allergy, so she truly understood my situation. Her care and efficiency really stood out, making an otherwise rough moment much easier to handle. Oh my goodness where do I even begin? Trouvaille is truly a culinary art installation located in Richmond. While nestled in an unassuming black building, walking inside you're transported to a vintage feeling, cozy and dare I say romantic atmosphere. I was lucky enough to find them on Instagram where they advertised their cocktail dinner where we would be able to experience 5 courses all with their own delicious paired cocktail. Each dish was so carefully crafted and the chef truly seems to enjoy what he does. I have experienced tasting menus before but this one took the cake. It truly consisted of flavors, ideas and pairings that I would have never thought of. It was truly a novel experience that I would recommend to anyone. Now if food is not your thing. The cocktails that were served were not only amazing but unique. The bartender truly cared about what he was serving and we experienced drinks that not only were delicious but intriguing. From tomato and black pepper to pumpkin seed milk to Brioche. I was so confused reading the pairings but then so excited as they touched my tongue. This place is truly a deviation from the bland and normal in the best of ways. The service was impeccable, the food was amazing and the drinks stole the show. Trouvaille is *THE* destination if you want to experience something quirky, experimental and downright delicious. I love Trouvaille and have gate kept this for too long. This is a great local eatery nestled in the fan next to Lombardy market. The interior features a dark and moody ambiance and there is a back patio dining area as well. I've ordered everything off their menu which is fantastic! The ingredients are fresh, local and seasonal. Items range from $10-$20 for apps, $20-$45 for the entrees, my favorite are the short ribs and salmon which are cooked to perfection and not skimpy on the portions. Drinks are well balanced as well. Service is friendly and attentive, you'll never have to wait for water or your bill. There's happy hour from 4pm-6pm. Really a 4.5. Lovely dark restaurant and bar. We showed up early without a reservation and were seated at bar which was perfect for us. Ordered a number of small plates and cocktails which all arrived fairly quickly and hot! All of it was delicious. Lots of flavor and depth. Food: smoked seafood dip had chunks of shrimp, hot bread, and was served warm with a dill garnish. A warm comforting dip served with buttery bread that ranks among the best I've ever had. Star of the dinner was the koji beef pasta. Made with hand made tagliatelle, shaved koji beef, cremini mushrooms, mustard greens, miso, and pecorino, the level of flavor and texture was next level and probably my second favorite pasta dish I've ever had in Richmond. The gnocchi was pretty good as well, the only downside was that the gnocchi were a tad bit overdone. Cocktails were amazing and balanced and all in all, is well worth a visit. We travelled to Richmond this weekend and had the pleasure of trying this new restaurant in the Fan district, Trouvaille! From the moody decor, the timely food service, and inclusive, fun menu selections (we love good vegetarian options!), this is a notable new Richmond food spot! We started out with the heirloom carrots, heirloom tomatoes, and house bread. All 3 were phenomenal starters. The strawberry and leek house butters that accompanied the buttery, toasted house bread were incredibly delicious and everyone agreed we could have had 3 more orders of this. The heirloom carrots and tomatoes were refreshing and had lovely acidity in both dishes. All entrees ordered were remarkable. The braised beef short ribs were accompanied with house kimchi which had amazingly strong garlic flavor (which i LOVE on my kimchi), the sushi rice was crisp on the outside and sticky on the inside, and the coconut curry was incredibly rich - the only harp i had on this is that the short ribs could have been a tad more tender. The curried cauliflower steak was so full of flavor - a bite with all the ingredients together was perfectly balanced - the spice of the green curry was balanced by the creaminess of the black bean puree and acidity of the pickled mustard seeds and shallots. The bolognese pasta was thin and nicely cooked, and the meat and sauce accompaniment was rich and warming, exactly what you crave in a bolognese. The parisian gnocchi were thick and starchy, a fun take on gnocchi, and paired with lovely buttery beech mushrooms. The shrimp & grits was a wonderful creamy, meaty, and rich dish - the tasso ham added a savory, salty flavor to the creamy grits. I will definitely be back here next time I'm in Richmond to try some more of their delicious, seasonal dishes! Trouvaille is great new location that you have to try. Between the craft cocktails, great food, and outstanding service, trouvaille is a great spot for night out, date night, or happy hour. My wife and I sampled the Short Rib and the Filet. Both were wonderful. The short rib stood out though. It was incredibly tender and flavorful and layered on bed of crispy rice. It was great combination of flavor and textures. For drinks we tried Duck Season and True vibes. Both were surprising, complex, and delicious. If you are not sure just trust the bartender, Austin. I was visiting the area, and stopped in on a lark. This little bistro is a bit of a hole in a wall, but the food blew me away. They have a creative array of cocktails, and a relatively small, but extremely well conceived menu. I had the filet entrée, which came with a perfectly prepared and seasoned 8 ounce filet. Sides included perfectly executed broccolini, and potato pave. I paired it with wines from their small, but excellent selection. I strongly recommend the beignet as a dessert, especially if you are a little bit adventurous, and don't mind a sweet and savory dessert. Service is quite good, in a cocktail menu looks amazing, though I didn't try anything. There is a happy hour from 5 to 6 PM most days. read more

We went on a Sunday at 5:30 pm. We were two of four people in the whole restaurant. I think we must have caught them on a bad night or maybe the chef wasn't in yet. Our waitress was also the bartender, Trouvaille seemed to be extremely short staffed. I have been to this building in every reincarnation for the past fifteen years, starting when it was Balliceaux and we were excited to try this version. The first thing we noticed, was that the renovation seemed DIY. We had: Crab Toast, Duck dumplings, Braised Cabbage, Potato Pave, Beef Tarare, House bread, and the short ribs. Crab toast: 4/5 the highlight of our meal Duck Dumpling: 2/5 This tasted very acrid. We ate one of the dumplings and a taste of the broth, before we couldn't have anymore. I don't think this is how the chef intended this dish to taste Braised Cabbage: 4/5 hard to go wrong with this one. solid dish Potato Pave: 4/5 fried potato slices covered in beef tallow, it was something I would order again Beef tartare: 3/5 The chips that were served with this were pretty good. The Beef itself was very odd, they topped it with Lemon juice so much of the beef was gray and had an unappetizing texture. House bread: 1/5 This was almost inedible, so so dry. I wonder if they used an old loaf of bread because we were such an early reservation, maybe the fresh bread wasn't ready yet. Short ribs: 1/5 What we received was steak, but it was not beef short rib. read more

I never write reviews, BUT I had the most amazing meal sitting with my mom at the bar. The chef was super accommodating to our whim's and another patron's dietary restrictions. We really loved the potato pave, deconstructed she-crab soup, & the domain st vincent brut champagne. Our pasta and burger were great. The lemon sauce on the Japanese cheesecake was delicious. My favorite drinks were the blood feather and the night cap. Service was great! I think I've been to 3 bars in that space and it's never looked prettier than it does now. Everything we had was okay, but nothing was particularly good or memorable (except for the miso butter whiskey drink which was very interesting in a good way). The filet mignon was cooked medium instead of medium rare and lacked any sort of seasoning. The bao bun appetizer was a misnomer -- it was a greasy fried bun instead of a fluffy steamed bun. This is going to be at the top of my "best meals ever" list for the foreseeable future. We enjoyed a four course tasting menu, with wine pairings, a few weeks ago, and are already planning our next trip for to try the regular menu or do another tasting menu. I would put the food on par with the tasting menus at Per Se NY and at L'Atelier Miami. It was creative, innovative, and totally relaxing. Trouvaille brings Michelin-star-worthy cooking with a warm, welcoming, hip but not pretentious vibe. To start, the cocktails are expertly crafted. Beautiful flavors served with restraint and simplicity. We ordered the House Bread which had been conveyed as "a must" and we can absolutely confirm it is not to be missed. Somehow, the combination of a beautiful yeasty bread and a flavor and aroma of char that I cannot for the life of me determine how they achieve, seeing as the bread was not charred! Served with a scallion compound butter...absolute perfection. Our entries were a continuation of the beautiful simplicity and elegance with flawlessly executed dishes that left us completely satisfied.
