The Miss Piggy with Garlic Mashed Potatoes and a Blueberry Pancake Sour Beer (nearest)
    Mike ..

We snagged a parking spot out front on a Sunday afternoon around 3 pm, near impossible anywhere close to Carytown most days. The hostess seated us right away and took our drink orders. Initially, I skimmed the menu and considered leaving. The prices were high for a "sandwich shop," and I almost incorrectly assumed the worst. What a foolish mistake that would have been. The menu here is one of the most curated I have seen in Richmond. The handhelds, as they call them at Brazen, can only be described as sophisticated sandwiches with top-tier ingredients. We tried The Miss Piggy and The Mockingbird. As I admired the decor inside, I noticed the blueberry pancake sour beer (big fan of sours here) listed on the chalkboard and decided to give it a go. It was nearly as good as Ft. Worth's Martin House Brewing Company's rotating stock (their Anger Sharks is divine). The bartender brought out out sandwiches after a short wait. I was not ready for the ensuing plate and presentation. This place, this chef, this kitchen are divinely inspired. The pork was succulent and aromatic. The chicken was moist and tender. The sauces perfectly complimented the vegetables, only to be enveloped by the torpedo roll, which itself was crunchy, yet still soft and airy. Don't even get me started on the garlic mashed potatoes. I had to force myself to stop eating them. The chef here has achieved potato excellence. I felt a right fool for even considering a different option only minutes before. I cannot describe with mere words what my taste buds were exclaiming as I chewed each delectable morsel. Do yourself a favor and try this place as soon as you can. I wholeheartedly recommend Brazen with all the breath I can muster. Michelin star quality food at an incredibly affordable price.

Update from our second visit... better than the first and we can't find fault. Service was friendly and relaxed and the space is open and inviting. The food and drinks are outstanding. We tried the Golden Order cocktail. Oh my! Sweet, tart, creamy with a sprinkling of pepper on top. Now for the food: House salad - fresh and plentiful with an interesting mint and olive vinaigrette. Braised beets- a beet lovers delight, with tender beets, fennel, a creamy base and crunch dill toast points for crunch. NY strip special - tasty steak, lovely bearnaise sauce, and creamy, crispy duck fat potatoes. Oh those potatoes! Scallops and cheddar grits - tender and sweet scallops, a generous portion of creamy cheddar grits, topped with chimichurri and crispy onions. Panna cotta dessert - lovely lemon custard with berry compote and a crunchy granola topping. A wonderful way to end a rich meal. We will be back soon!

I stopped in for an impromptu date night earlier in the month and had a great experience. It was a weeknight, so we risked going without a reservation, but I'd recommend snagging one for busier nights. My boyfriend and I both ordered glasses of rose to start, which were great. For our meals, I had the Oxbow sandwich and he had the Grazen. The Oxbow was the clear winner. He said he'd try the burger on our next visit, which also looked delightful. For dessert, he had the pumpkin cheesecake and I had their chocolate cake. I looooved my cake and would absolutely order it again. Prices were reasonable given the quality and the ambiance was warm and inviting.

Unexpectedly amazing! The word that comes to mind with Brazen is flavor. The chefs know what they are doing here. There is thought, tastiness, and technique in everything we ordered. Jackson, our server was super hospitable and knowledgeable about Brazen's menu. He gave us good direction on what might interest us and kept our courses coming at a perfect timing. We ordered the beaised beets for an appetizer which were very yummy with hints of orange. Both of our burgers were ordered as bowls over potatoes (which is great if your gluten free). These potatoes were so good (unexpected) and the actual burgers were epic. If you CAN have gluten, I would guess they are even better on the bread. My Trifecta brazen bowl was so, so tasty that literally my mind was blown. My husband's Beauford bowl was also very flavorful and rivaled some of the much more expensive restaurants we've dined in.. We ended with an epic panna cotta that was perfect. The only reason you wouldn't dine here is if you don't want delicious food in a super nice atmosphere at an amazing price. Once Richmond figures it out,, you will be lucky to get a reservation at Brazen in the future because the food is just that good.

This review is only for the Helle Ringer (since I only tried this). It was so good! I came during lunch and ordered this yummy fried chicken sandwich with veggies and an additional side of fries. The flavors in this sandwich were so good, with the perfect amount of kick. I do wish I had a bigger cut of chicken in my sandwich because it was so tasty. The veggies were cooked to perfection. The space is really pretty. I love what they've done with the inside. The bar is lovely and so are the plants. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We were seated immediately and our server was really sweet. They have single stall restrooms here. As well as free street parking out front. I'm excited to come back to enjoy their cocktails and more food items!

Brazen's got a lot going for it. Ended up sitting outside on their patio, great for a nice night out. It is right by the road, so you'll catch some traffic noise here and there, but honestly, it didn't take away from the experience. Felt laid-back and chill overall. I went with the helle ringer chicken sandwich, and I wanted to love it but it just didn't hit like I hoped. It lacked that crispy bite I was looking for and was a bit under-seasoned for my taste. Not a total miss, just one of those meals where you wish it had one more pass before sending it out. A few small tweaks and it could've been a standout. Shoutout to our server, though. Super attentive, quick with the food, and checked in on us often without being overbearing. Service like that really makes a difference and kept the night feeling smooth. Brazen was a solid night out though. With a little more attention to the food, this spot could easily go from good to great. I'll definitely be back to give the menu another shot.

I came here with my boyfriend for a dinner date and we sat outside on the patio, which had a lovely atmosphere--perfect for a relaxed evening. I didn't try any cocktails, but I did have a glass of Chardonnay, and I was impressed with their wine selection. The one I chose was crisp, refreshing, and exactly what I was hoping for. I ordered the Oxbow sandwich, which I had high hopes for. While it was good, I felt it could've used a bit more flavor to really stand out. It just needed a little something extra to make it memorable. Our waitress was fantastic--super friendly, attentive, and helpful when it came to recommending items from the menu. Her service definitely made the experience more enjoyable. All in all, it was a pleasant night out. With a few small tweaks to the food, it could've been excellent. I'd still come back to try something new!

Frog in a Boat + Pasta salad + Helle Ringer

Had a great early lunch here to celebrate my start of summer break! (Note: brunch is only served on Sunday) It was a beautiful day so we opted to sit outside but the interior is absolutely lovely! Our server was also incredibly sweet & attentive. We decided to split a bottle of Cava in the name of celebration! I chose the frog in the boat because I love a focaccia. It was so tasty albeit a bit of a challenge to eat! I also asked for a side of pasta salad that seemed to be tossed in some type of balsamic vinegar which was a nice riff on the classic. My friend was kind enough to share out a bite of her chicken sandwich, the Helle Ringer and mmm buddy was that some delicious, crispy chicken! Overall, a great new Fan spot and I'll happily return!

What a great find!! Driving down the road, I noticed the sign and looked up the restaurant. The following weekend we decided to come out with friends. The drinks were great! Get the Rose Collored Boy. We tried different things including the specials. They have vegan and gluten free options, but you can also add a protein to those. I thought the panna cotta was amazing We'll be back for sure.

    Poutine

I have been here a few times. The server is always very friendly and everyone seems to know food very well. The dishes are unique and delicious By unique, this is what I mean. Sure, a lot of places have wings. But not like these. And not with the most awesome vegan green goddess dressing you could imagine. You might ask why you have vegan dressing with a meat dish. I don't know the answer to that, but it works. The poutine is to die for. The braised meat on top of it alone it's worthy of a Michelin star restaurant. It's a small menu, but there seems to be something for everyone. You have to try this place out.

Went after a work volunteer event. We were starving and Brazen delivered big time! We chose to sit outside on the patio. Brazen is so well designed! The color scheme makes it so cozy while still giving a fun night out vibe. Since it was such a nice day, we chose to sit outside on the patio. Three out of four of us got the Firebird cocktail which was amazing! Refreshing, slightly fruity with a little tartness from the pomegranate. The perfect amount of smokiness from someone who does not like Mezcal. Any restaurant with beets already wins in my book but Brazen did the beet appetizer really well. It's a cold dish with fennel and orange. Perfectly balanced. I got their version of a bahn mi. I probably wouldn't get it again but it was still good. Our server was attentive and fun! I will definitely be back to try more.

    Fried chicken sandwhich & asparagus

Farm to table and this place slaps. I enjoyed the Fried chicken sandwhich with some perfectly cooked asparagus. The chicken was crispy and flavorful, the toppings and sauce were crunchy, fresh, and zesty - delicious. I also enjoyed a draft pint to round out the meal.

The decor and the ambiance are invigorating & soul soothing concurrently. On both occasions I ate in the upstairs dining area & I really enjoyed being able to look out their windows & observe the hustle & bustles of Broad Street while dining. The music that played in the background while we dined was the perfect aural companion to a down home Southern cuisine centered meal. As you know, I love when the music in the restaurant compliments the cuisine & Lillie Pearl's playlist is top notch. During our dining time, we ordered their Smoked Wings as our appetizer. The wings were perfectly seasoned & visually appealing. However, I found them to be a bit dry & overcooked for my taste. My dining companion, however, had no problem with the wings texture. She enjoyed them very much. For my main meal, I ordered their Wild Game Burger[a mixture of Waygu Beef, Bison & Wild Boar] with a side order of Fries. The burger was cooked perfectly. It was well seasoned & juicy. The fries were delicious. They were crispy and also perfectly seasoned. I could have eaten a whole plate of just the fries alone. I ordered a cocktail to complement my meal, the Sweetest Thing. It was bright, crisp & a perfect drink for my food. As for Customer Service, Our server was courteous & attentive & knowledgeable about any menu changes we needed to be aware of. Also of note for me was that I had a reservation I needed to change to an earlier time slot & the staff was able to accommodate my request expediently. I also appreciated the fact that they informed me in advance that they were still on the Lunch menu & not dinner as my initial reservations had requested. I find that type of honesty & transparency refreshing & is definitely one of the reasons I will ALWAYS be a loyal Lillie Pearl customer.

On to the meat and potatoes: Got seated quickly (had a res). Server (Caleb) was attentive, but not overbearing which was nice. Helped me out with ordering the brussel sprouts, suggesting them as a side instead of the appetizer (since it was just me) which was cool. Food: Phenomenal. Ordered the braised short ribs with a side of fried brussel sprouts. Short ribs were meaty, super tender, flavorful and plentiful. Served over mashed potatoes. With a (large) side of really good collard greens. The brussel sprouts were different from any other brussel sprout I've ever had. Very much had a "kung pao chicken" vibe to them (that's what Caleb called it, and he was right). Really really good. Only downmark is on the banana pudding. It was "good" don't get me wrong.....but it was super sweet and didn't have any real bananas or Nilla wafers in it. I would have been happy if the serving was 1/2 the size it was (because it was so sweet, couldn't eat the whole thing). Just came off as overly commercial. All in all a great meal, and a great start to a Saturday evening.

Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.
