I'm a food above atmosphere person but both were on par at Native plate! The staff were so diligent and I loved watching the cooks pour their soul into the food. I had only planned on spending $60 or so but ended up spending $140 including a great tip for my waiter. I got the Fried Chicken Banh Mi, Dan Dan Noodles, and my guest ordered the Brisket Pho, and Singapore noodles alongside a Mojito and their coconut ice cube drink (blanking on the name). I loved every bite of my food. The Daikon Radish was the highlight of the Banh Mi and I was in love with every bite. Visibly dancing and gleaming with joy while eating + the great music being played also helped. I didn't eat my sandwich until it got cold as I like to finish a dish before trying another. I started with the Dan Dan noodles and had to drink 3 of the liters of water by myself to finish my meal . I took my guest's peppers and my peppers and crushed them up into my Dan Dan plate with all the seeds that came with them. In addition I also used all the chili oil paste it came with as well. It was so damn great I enjoyed every second. My guest loved their pho and didn't stop eating it and ate half of their Singapore noodles before getting full and having to take it home. They absolutely loved their drinks and it was so fun to watch the bartender make the drinks. Two shakers in hand mixing the drinks and oh boy were they strong . We will definitely be back!!! Oh and they also had chopsticks for us to use and we ate our entire meal with them. I knew I was in for a whirlwind of flavor when the ethnicities of the cooks matched the restaurant and patrons of color from Pakistani, Black, Indian, Korean, Thai, and more were dining in . Only downsides for me personally were the Singapore noodles but it wasn't my dish. I tasted them and didn't think they were for me I usually prefer a different ratio of seasoning for my Singapore noodles. My guest whose favorite dish is Singapore noodles quite adored them. Though they did say the Singapore noodles I make at home are better they still crushed it and the next morning woke up and crushed the rest with a smile on the face . Only thing I didn't like was the pho but that's my personal taste getting in the way. I don't like fish based broths but my guest ate every single last dropped and loved it! So if that's your alley go for it!!! 10/10 will try again!!! P.S. please tip the staff graciously they work so hard. If you're going to order a $100 worth of food don't be the person not tipping or tipping $10 when the service was excellent. Friendly servers, quick service. Clean, decorated interior. We came for lunch and ordered the spicy cauliflower as an appetizer, and the curry laksa and kung pao tofu as mains. I thought the spicy cauliflower was yummy. The cauliflower was tossed in a gochujang sauce with a light crunchy batter. My partner thought the cauliflower was a bit bland. The serving of the appetizer was quite large for two people, we couldn't finish it all. I ordered the curry laksa. I usually stray away from coconut based curries because they tend to be too sweet, but I enjoyed this curry. The base is creamy and balances well with the savory/tangy flavors, and the veggies are fresh. The server brought out chili crisp upon request. Cheerfully greeted we got a great seat in the window for street watching..Great background music and a well decorated space make for a relaxing setting. We ordered spring rolls and ahi tuna starters. My, that Ahi was fresh and so good w a sea weed salad what a great choice. We thought the pho would be sampler size. Nope. Meal sized and the broth was super, so smooth and flavorful with just a little kick. Chicken was tender and wonderful. We would love to go back here when we had more time to sample the bountiful menu and we will. It was a great lunch and just right to try back to our walk to explore more of Richmond. I don't give out 5 stars Willy nilly; it's really got to exceed my expectations. Native Plate did that and so it is deserving. The food is outstandingly executed. This is a kitchen that knows its food and cares about its product. From the drinks to the entrees it was clear that this place doesn't play around. They take their food seriously and I love that. My wife had the katsu and it tasted like it did in Japan, i had the best pineapple rice I've had since I've been back stateside. The duck bao buns were delicious. The marinade they use on the duck was so good i wanted to bring some home. Perfectly prepared duck,fresh vegetable slaw, flawless bao buns. The portions were excellent for the price point, and the service was as good as the food. Our server was kind, warm, friendly, and gave us great recommendations which we followed and they were spot on. I wish i had room for dessert but by the time I was done eating my entree all I could think about was a nap. The ambience is quaint, laid back and relaxed. It turns out my partner and I had been here before and forgot all about it. I was feeling drained after a tough day, and we stopped in around 9 pm on a Saturday night. The server was a lovely young woman, who was kind and accommodating with an excellent smile. She was quick to boot. We ordered the gochuhang cauliflower and rice paper rolls (they're massive!) for an appetizer. My partner was not very hungry, so she snacked on the cauliflower with no entree. She said they were crispy and mouth watering, and saved me a few to try with the leftovers. The rice paper rolls were almost half the size of a Chipotle burrito, and the peanut sauce was heavenly. They stick to your hands a bit, though, I didn't mind. The sauce was a sweet and savory mixture; I felt it was the perfect blend (I took two to-go ramikens home for some additional dipping plesure). I ordered the Bulgogi BBQ, because I had to know if it lived up to the hype. Spoiler alert: it does. The chicken was thinly sliced, tender, and moist, while the sauce and vegetables absolutely hit the mark (Chef's kiss). We also enjoyed the most delicious Thai Iced Tea you'll ever try. The service and hospitality leaves a lot to be desired and I did not have a good experience. The appetizer Spring roll was filled a little shrimp cut in half and vegetables that were bland. Also, i went to the bathroom and the kitchen was nasty. We both chose items that were highly recommended on other foodie platforms and some suggested by our waitress (super helpful and nice). We made it in time for HH and ordered their house margaritas (KP ordered the pomegranate and I had guava, 3.4/5 I've had stronger HH margs but this one was refreshing and they use really good guava juice). We ordered the Pok Pok wings (3.2/5-fried well, smaller in portion) and Gochujang cauliflower (3/5-the cauliflower wasn't as tender as I had imagined but battered well). For entree's I ordered the Singapore noodles (2.9/5-the shrimp were pleasantly plump and juicy but the pork was a bit dry) and KP opted to try the Katsu curry, chicken was beautifully fried. I have now eaten here three times and have to say it is my go to place when in Richmond. The food is so so good. The service is excellent and friendly and their cocktails are amazing. If only I had a local restaurant like this I would be very happy. The vast majority of dishes can be made vegitarian as well if that is what you want. I do not know if you would class this as a neighborhood gem as I don't know the city that well, but I would call it that as so many locals appear to be there. They do take out as well. We dined at Native Plate during the "Richmond Water Crisis" and the service was great and they gave us plastic utensils and bottled water during our visit which I appreciated due to the fact that Richmond was still under a boil advisory at the time. We ordered the fried rice dish and ramen, and I was not as pleased with the ramen. It was a bit watered down and the meat was well over-cooked. The ramen noodles reminded me of Maruchan ramen noodles, and I was disappointed. The fried rice, however, was pretty good. Incredible good & great service! I'm vegan and they were very accommodating. I got the summer rolls and the Dan Dan Noodles with tofu. The peanut sauce for the summer rolls is perfect. As someone who loves spicy food, the Dan Dan noodles have a nice kick. I have a high tolerance for spice so I'd rate them like a 3- just enough to have a little zing but definitely not overpowering. Upon entering, it really felt cozy and calm inside, the rain and wind that night definitely added to the vibe, truth be told. The cauliflower was tasty, but they were a bit overcooked for my liking (would have liked them better if they weren't so soggy). Native Plate is a really cool place with good vibes and great deals. We came in for lunch and the restaurant wasn't too crowded, but it did take a bit for them to receive and place our order. We got quite the smattering of items, a few appetizers and entrees. They were great with an allergy accommodation at the table - anyone gluten free, they were super receptive and attentive! My favorite thing was the veggie gyoza, it had a great crunch and was served in a nice portion for a shared appetizer. The Vietnamese coffee was another big hit, I love that they served it as it was brewing. Really fun to be part of the process! The food was nicely presented however it was not that what I was expecting based on other reviews. The edamame wasn't cooked fully so it was hard to pop it out of the shell. The chicken was fried so hard that we barely tasted any chicken in the bites. The Singapore noodles had this weird sweetness to it that just didn't mesh well with the dish. I don't want to short change this establishment so I am ONLY reviewing our dishes which was my Pho Noodle Soup w/ brisket and Wife's Miso Ramen soup. First off my background, my wife is from Thailand. For years I have adopted her way of cooking, flavorful and tasty. So you cannot imagine the way I felt when I tasted my soup from Native Plate?? Absolutely NO TASTE. The brisket was moist but very few pieces of meat, the rest of the bowl was just a glob of noodles in a liquid. What I was taught eating from home is to always add Fish Sauce and White Vinegar to Asian soup which brings out the taste. Native Plate had fish sauce but no white vinegar on hand, bummer. Unfortunately I could not finish my bowl with satisfaction. In conclusion Native Plate has a very nice atmosphere. Tables are tight and patrons are shoulder to shoulder in some places. There is seating at the bar and by the window which might offer a little more space and privacy. Street parking is metered and does take coins, bills and credit cards. There was a nice working class crowd mixed in with the locals when I was there. The other dishes at this restaurant actually looked more flavorful on the other patron tables, which I am sure offered way more taste than my bowl of soup. Asian food is very tough to master if a Chef doesn't have an Asian culinary background some dishes may slip under the radar without noticing which Is why I changed my trademark mask for this review.
