Walking around the Capital you can work up an appetite and if you are looking for sustenance and style make your way down hill to the Native Plate. Cheerfully greeted we got a great seat in the window for street watching..Great background music and a well decorated space make for a relaxing setting. We ordered spring rolls and ahi tuna starters. My, that Ahi was fresh and so good w a sea weed salad what a great choice. We thought the pho would be sampler size. Nope. Meal sized and the broth was super, so smooth and flavorful with just a little kick. Chicken was tender and wonderful. We would love to go back here when we had more time to sample the bountiful menu and we will. It was a great lunch and just right to try back to our walk to explore more of Richmond. Native Plate, yes.

I don't give out 5 stars Willy nilly; it's really got to exceed my expectations. Native Plate did that and so it is deserving. The food is outstandingly executed. This is a kitchen that knows its food and cares about its product. From the drinks to the entrees it was clear that this place doesn't play around. They take their food seriously and I love that. My wife had the katsu and it tasted like it did in Japan, i had the best pineapple rice I've had since I've been back stateside. The duck bao buns were delicious. The marinade they use on the duck was so good i wanted to bring some home. Perfectly prepared duck, fresh vegetable slaw, flawless bao buns. The portions were excellent for the price point, and the service was as good as the food. Our server was kind, warm, friendly, and gave us great recommendations which we followed and they were spot on. I wish i had room for dessert but by the time I was done eating my entree all I could think about was a nap. The ambience is quaint, laid back and relaxed. Small dining room and everything came out quickly and piping hot which i love. This place is killing it in the Richmond foodie scene and that's saying a lot. Now I see why.

It turns out my partner and I had been here before and forgot all about it. I was feeling drained after a tough day, and we stopped in around 9 pm on a Saturday night. The server was a lovely young woman, who was kind and accommodating with an excellent smile. She was quick to boot. We ordered the gochuhang cauliflower and rice paper rolls (they're massive!) for an appetizer. My partner was not very hungry, so she snacked on the cauliflower with no entree. She said they were crispy and mouth watering, and saved me a few to try with the leftovers. The rice paper rolls were almost half the size of a Chipotle burrito, and the peanut sauce was heavenly. They stick to your hands a bit, though, I didn't mind. The sauce was a sweet and savory mixture; I felt it was the perfect blend (I took two to-go ramikens home for some additional dipping plesure). I ordered the Bulgogi BBQ, because I had to know if it lived up to the hype. Spoiler alert: it does. The chicken was thinly sliced, tender, and moist, while the sauce and vegetables absolutely hit the mark (Chef's kiss). We also enjoyed the most delicious Thai Iced Tea you'll ever try. Not a drop left near the end. Native Plate is such an easy and solid recommend. There is no doubt we'll be back soon.

10/10 all around Several vegan options on the menu (just ask--our server was super helpful). We ended up with the gochujang cauliflower, Indonesian fried rice (tofu, no egg, extra chili oil) and the tofu bulgogi. They even had mocktails (guava mojito was amazing) AND vegan dessert (coconut rice pudding cups with banana flambé on top--almost TOO good). Our waiter Eric was one of the best we've experienced anywhere. He was so enthusiastic and ready to help. Great attitude. It was really cute in there and we loved our high-top table by the window. It would be better if vegan options were marked clearly on the menu but it's ok!

A large flavorless Showing Roll with a soupy peanut sauce that had no flavor.

The service and hospitality leaves a lot to be desired and I did not have a good experience. The appetizer Spring roll was filled a little shrimp cut in half and vegetables that were bland. Also, i went to the bathroom and the kitchen was nasty. The lady server made up some excuse for not allowing certain seats to be occupied during lunch and the guy server asked me if I needed hot sauce for a Spring Roll that had a very flavorless peanut sauce. A few years ago, I haft a much better experience but it will be awhile before I return.

Puny portions, all breading no meat, and was given barely any meat. It was also burnt. Not worth 18 dollars. Highly disappointed considering the reviews.

This is a great little restaurant. Everyone was friendly, the food was great and came out really fast. I came here on a Saturday evening without a reservation and sat at the bar because there were no open seats. Once a table became available the hostess offer a table. Overall a great experience.

My cousin and fellow foodie like to catch up over cocktails and a good plate! We decided to give @nativeplaterva a try on a school night, lol! The space is definitely a vibe in a cute location near Shockoe Bottom. The staff as soon as we came in were super welcoming and helpful! All the tables were full midway through our visit, definitely favored among the community. We both chose items that were highly recommended on other foodie platforms and some suggested by our waitress (super helpful and nice). We made it in time for HH and ordered their house margaritas (KP ordered the pomegranate and I had guava, 3.4/5 I've had stronger HH margs but this one was refreshing and they use really good guava juice). We ordered the Pok Pok wings (3.2/5-fried well, smaller in portion) and Gochujang cauliflower (3/5-the cauliflower wasn't as tender as I had imagined but battered well). For entree's I ordered the Singapore noodles (2.9/5-the shrimp were pleasantly plump and juicy but the pork was a bit dry) and KP opted to try the Katsu curry, chicken was beautifully fried. The portions were plentiful and plated well but we all agreed (I took my leftovers to Mimi for her dinner) if the flavors/seasonings were elevated the food would have been amazing! Nonetheless we had a lovely evening out! If you've tried let me know your thoughts/order!

I've passed this place several times on my way to and from work. I finally was able to try it out with my friend on Saturday. The drinks were good ! Food was amazing ! Great options too if you're vegetarian ! It was pretty empty around lunch time but totally worth the lovely environment! The staff were friendly as well and the service was good.

Wow, great pick by my hubby. I got duck bao buns and he got the vermicelli bowl with chicken. Both were delicious and surprisingly filling for us foodies who thought "there's no way we're going to get out of here with just that pitiful amount ", but yes I ate my words and then some. Delicious and finger licking good. I could only two of the baos so my hubby ate the last one. I chomped on the crunchy taro root chips. Yummy. Fast and kind service. Clean for a smaller area.

Service was really good. I got the spicy miso ramen without spice. It didn't taste much like ramen, more like regular soup. However it was big and filling.

    Crispy rolls.

I have now eaten here three times and have to say it is my go to place when in Richmond. The food is so so good. The service is excellent and friendly and their cocktails are amazing. If only I had a local restaurant like this I would be very happy. The vast majority of dishes can be made vegitarian as well if that is what you want. I do not know if you would class this as a neighborhood gem as I don't know the city that well, but I would call it that as so many locals appear to be there. They do take out as well. Highly recommend a visit.

They offer a variety of sauces and flavors that really elevate the seafood and make the experience feel unique and interactive. It was such a fun meal to share, comparing each bite and talking through all the different flavors. The service was excellent. Our waitress was knowledgeable about everything we ordered and made great recommendations. The atmosphere is just as impressive. The decor is simple but thoughtfully elevated, and sitting at the bar area feels like you have stepped out of Richmond and into somewhere like New York City. I also love following Lillian on social media to keep up with their latest specials. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves seafood.

Hats off to the staff at Lillian who continue to be wonderful, but now that they have scrapped…read moretheir dollar oyster lunch specials, the food has absolutely nothing to offer. Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.

To get in, you must know the password or tell the host a joke that makes him laugh. We were escorted in and quickly noticed that this was more than a speakeasy-it was a full restaurant. We stopped in for drinks, but it was nice to have tapas. I got the popcorn with the Tequilla lime butter, which was the perfect balance of salt. I had a mezcal drink which was perfect! I'm such a fan of mezcal and am excited when I see it on the menu. Our waitress was a delight-super attentive and also a bartender so she was able to answer all of our drink questions. It was very spacious with outdoor seating. Definitely a 10/10 experience. I would definitely go again!

He asked for the password and we, unprepared, had to tell him a joke or an interesting fact. Luckily, my partner had one on hand. The atmosphere was lovely, very reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy, or at least what you'd imagine it to be like. Our server came by within a few minutes of us being seated. She lacked enthusiasm, unlike the host, unfortunately. Her service turned out to be lackluster as well. We ordered the chicken pot pie and the filet mignon with asparagus. For drinks, the Grape Gatsby and Maine root beer. The food, like our server, lacked appeal. The saving grace was the host and the atmosphere. The view was lovely and the intimacy of the setting was a welcome experience. For dessert we ordered the bread pudding, and it was tasty, though nothing special. The burned odor that we smelled prior to its arrival turned out to be the bread. I can recommend Grandstaff and Stein as an experience, but you should not expect much in the way of culinary delights or exemplary service. We probably won't be back, but if you've never been, it's worth trying at least once.
