All too often (at least in this area) the most authentic type of Chinese food is found at a restaurant featuring "panda" in its name. That made our visit to Beijing On Grove such a wonderful experience. We were able to taste dishes that were what we remembered eating in Beijing near the Forbidden City. The Spicy flounder was fantastic (although I personally would have enjoyed some free-floating peppers in the sauce), and the tea and coffee smoked duck was delicious. Shared appetizer of the chili dumplings were also delightful. Lunch menu offers standardized specials, so the more conservative American palates will find many recognizable standards. The dinner menu is more expansive and features more authentic options. Our server today, Zoey, was both friendly and knowledgeable. She was attentive without being overbearing. knew the menu well and was able to make recommendations. The manager, Bill, came by to check on us and we had a nice conversation where he explained that their head chef was originally trained in China and then came to New York before arriving here. The menu clearly reflects his influence. Of special note is their Chef's Special, a fixed price group menu featuring his selections of three appetizers and five main courses. This is similar to a Japanese sushi version of an omakase experience. We are looking forward to returning with some friends or family when they visit to take advantage of this! We had a family dinner here to celebrate a birthday and were lucky enough to score the private room. The private room had a little window into the kitchen so we got to see the chefs at work preparing all the food. The food is massive and served family style which allows you the option to share, eat it yourself or take home a nice sized to go box! I'm happy to report that lovers of both will find something they like here! Beijing on Grove has done a good job of introducing crowd favorites and more niche dishes alike in a palatable way to a wider crowd. The ambience is cute, the servers were helpful, and the food portions were well-endowed. My dish (spicy flounder) came with veggies and rice, which is nice for when everyone is ordering their own dishes. It was nicely flavored, remnicent of of some Sichuan-style fish dishes I've had in the past. My friend really liked her curry rice noodles: a subtly flavored noodle dish that was indeed surprisingly good. Numb numb pepper steak (not pictured) was nicely cooked with nice flavor as well. Not too sweet, with a good kick! The appetizers were a big hit as well: crispy chicken rolls: crispy, good flavor, with sweet and sour sauce lettuce wraps: nice light option, easily shareable green bean stir fry: blistered, hot wok style, with a satisfying bite. I appreciated that this establishment has created dishes that do justice to both Chinese and American Chinese food, respecting the flavors of each when appropriate. One small gripe: The tables are not very conducive to family style sharing, (sharing apps were a little difficult with a long table) but the main dishes are done in a way that seems to encourage individual portions, so it is understandable. This was my first time trying Beijing On Grove and I was not disappointed! I appreciated their ability to accommodate my dietary restrictions. They had vegan options and were able to make things vegan if they were advertised as vegetarian! The staff was very accommodating and gave great recommendations. The Green Bean Stir-fry has been on my mind since I left! It was delicious! It was seasoned so well and the texture was perfect! The pineapple fried rice did not disappoint either! Then I got the Spicy Flounder served with authentic Chinese vegetables. Wow, I gave two tastes to my husband who agreed that it transported us to a San Francisco Chinatown restaurant reknowned for their spicy fish. He shared his Tea smoked Duck which was accompanied by four bao buns and true Chinese vegetable slices. Our server Zoey was very attentive and the manager, Bill, visited us. He said his Chef started out in New York and he knew how to cook for Americans and true Asian palates as reflected in the lunch specials targeted for the less adventurous guests and what we ordered. Fabulous chef and kudos for his cooking. Also, Bill said the Chef's Special includes three appetizers and five entrees from the Chef. Each person pays $50. Quite a bargain considering what we paid but the portions were very generous. There is parking in the back of the restaurant. It was filled at this prime lunch hour. Again authentic decorations surrounding us. This is a great place for return visits. Truly a spectacular find, though we were unaware it was rated one of the top Chinese restaurants. We wanted to try this spot forever and finally were able to snag a patio spot on a warm summer evening. Our server Charlotte was soo attentive and friendly, and we felt truly taken care of. We started with the Eggplant Tempura app and Hot & Sour Soup - both of which were so good! The tempura is actually vegetarian as is the soup (we had to ask) and because most Hot & Sour soup is made with a non-veggie broth I am never able to try it - but this veggie version with egg and tofu was super flavorful, savory, and yummy. The eggplant was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with an awesome slightly numbing spice. For mains we shared the Fat Dragon Lo Mein, Kimchi Fried Rice, and Fat Dragon Tofu - all were super delicious. The menu had a good variety of appetizers, noodle/rice dishes, entrees, and desserts. I opted for the Chicken and Broccoli and my friend ordered the Tangerine Beef. We were both thrilled with the quality and quantity of the food that we received. They came out to our exact specifications and tasted delicious. Additionally, our server was super sweet and attentive. The restaurant is located on Libby so it is near lots of great shops that you can have a fun day or night of great food and shopping. They no longer offer Saki (not a deal breaker) and when we ordered the New Zealand Rack of Lamb we were told they are no longer available, but still listed on the menu (hate that). QQ= "bounciness associated with fresh handmade fishballs, glutinous rice balls, and certain types of noodles...Asian version of al-dente, QQ foods are soft but not mushy") They're cooked to perfection and the flavor is sweet with a nice kick. The kick isn't too spicy, so I'd even recommend them to people who don't like spicy food! I would go back to Beijing on Grove just for these. Chow Fun: While the dumplings were everything, this was not. I learned that chow fun is mean to be a bit on the plainer side, but not as bland as this dish was. I wouldn't order this one again. Peking Spring Rolls (Veggie): They were yummy! Nice crunch, just like spring rolls should be. Nothing life changing, but still tasty. Tangerine Beef: The sauce had a very good flavor. I love this place - takeout and dine-in food/service both consistently great. The vibe inside is hipster RVA cool with a Chinese/Asian flair (a more spacious Fat Dragon!). Had a delicious lunch at Beijing today. The place is very large with much seating. We were greeted and told we could pick our seats. Our server came promptly and brought water. I ordered the Modern Family. My girlfriend asked for a taste of the sweet and sour soup, one of two soups that came with the lunch. She brought her the sample and she ordered the basil chicken. The soups were piping hot - sweet and sour and won ton. The entrees were hot and came with rice and an egg roll. My Modern Family had shrimp, thinly sliced chicken, thinly sliced tender beef, mushrooms, broccoli, peppers and baby corn. It was very tasty and a generous portion. The parking can get tricky as they offer street parking and a lot in the back that is shared by multiple businesses, but there is a paid lot next to it for $8 in case you need it. The service was wonderful and the staff-person was very knowledgeable, and was able to answer questions on the dishes, which is always a plus! For apps, we had the Chili dumplings, and it was so good that my friend ordered a second one to go! The spice level was there, it was moist, it was perfectly cooked, the meat inside was juicy, and the sauce was perfect. For my entree, we both had Enter the Dragon, a mix of seafood with veggies and rice. The dishes took a few minutes longer than most places but I think it's because they cook each dish individually and it was absolutely worth it. One Star: A Disappointing First and Last Visit Reservation Details: Party of 2, Reservation for Michael Date: 12/27/2024, Time: 7:00 PM Seated at Table #2 We were excited to try Beijing on Grove for the first time, but sadly, the experience was a disaster from start to finish. Arriving 30 minutes early, we planned to enjoy an adult beverage at the bar before being seated. The hostess informed us our table was ready early, which was surprising, as we were told seating at this time was impossible. Seizing the auspicious moment, we agreed to review the menu while having a drink at the table. Our waitress, though pleasant and knowledgeable, warned us the bar was "backed up"--a confusing statement since neither the bar nor restaurant appeared particularly busy. Despite this, our first round of drinks took 15 minutes to arrive, with no follow-up from our waitress in the meantime. For appetizers, we ordered the Peking Spring Rolls and Ginger Salad, along with another round of drinks. The appetizers arrived, but the second round of drinks did not. We had to reorder, and the drinks took another 15 minutes to reach our table, again without any interim contact from our server. The ginger salad was tasty, but the Peking Spring Rolls were flavorless and watery. For mains, I ordered the Kung Pao Tofu with sides of kimchi and fried rice, while my dining companion opted for Kimchi Fried Rice with tofu. These dishes took 15-20 minutes to arrive- no problems there. The Kung Pao Tofu was excellent, but unfortunately, both rice dishes were inedible. They carried the distinct taste and smell of burnt rice--likely from scorched oil or an overheated pot. If you've ever burned oil, you know the smell/taste. When we flagged down the manager to share our concerns, his response was astonishing. After smelling the rice himself, he claimed the "smokey" taste was intentional, describing it as a "delicious char flavor" from the wok. Having burned rice ourselves, we knew better--this was not intentional. Still, we gave the rice another try, but the acrid, burnt flavor made it impossible to eat. To further validate our experience, we spoke with the party seated next to us at Table 3, who had also ordered rice dishes. When we asked if they had noticed the "delicious char flavor," they laughed and emphatically said "no." Our waitress, finally checking in after another 15-minute gap, handled the situation appropriately by offering to remove the uneaten rice dishes from our bill. Unfortunately, the manager apparently refused to honor this and declined to return to our table to discuss the matter further. Mistakes happen--burnt rice and delayed service could have been forgiven with proper acknowledgment and recovery. However, the mishandling of the situation, especially from management, turned this visit into an irredeemable failure. We won't be returning and are deeply disappointed to cancel premature plans to bring family, friends, and colleagues here.
