However, the chicken egg foo young was unacceptable. It was hard and dry, with edges so harsh that they were inedible. The gravy was thin and bland, lacking any authentic flavor. The only redeeming aspect of the meal was the rice that accompanied it. While I understand that restaurants can get busy, the lack of care in preparing this meal is evident. This is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant in Richmond! Their food is so delicious!!!!! It is consistently the most flavorful food! I have only done takeout so I can't speak to the ambience in the restaurant itself. Ordering online is quick and easy and the staff is always prompt and polite. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but I wasn't impressed. We had a group of 15 and went to Yen Ching on the recommendation of one of our friends. We were greeted immediately by a hostess who sat us at a large table in a private area that was elevated. It was nice having all of us at one table. For drinks, we ordered a variety...Sapporo, sodas, drinks that looked like they were straight from a tiki bar. I have to admit, my Sapporo didn't stand up to some of the fun cocktails others had. Drink envy. For my meal, I ordered egg drop soup, which was pretty standard. For my entree, I ordered Crispy Chicken, which was described as sweet, sour and spicy. I requested extra spicy. It came with fried or steamed rice, and I chose fried. The Crispy chicken was sweet, no sour, not a lick of spice. It was so sweet I could only eat a little. Even the addition of chili sauce couldn't cut the sweetness. My daughter ordered the dumplings, fried and thought they were okay. full disclosure that we eat at Peter Chang's and the dumplings there are hard to beat. She loves noodles and ordered the Singapore noodles. She thought they were okay but we're mostly onions. My husband got soup and wings and he really enjoyed the wings. He's a fan of anything fried since I rarely fry food at home. I've heard good things about the Yen Ching on Broad Street, so maybe I'll give them a try. For American style Chinese takeout this is my favorite spot around town. First I really like their sesame seed chicken. Most places just have it taste like sugar chicken, but this spot actually has some flavor. They make it spicy which I never had before Yen Ching, but definitely enjoy. Also their beef & mixed vegetables has a nice mix of vegetables. I realize that might sound silly, but I've had the experience of mostly getting green peppers & onions when ordering at some restaurants. Yen Ching delivered. Most people do Chinese take-out but we decided to dine-in and we were not disappointed. We got some intel that it would be empty in the dining room but not to be deterred Usually that means WARNING(!) We pressed on. It was in fact empty and we were sat right away. Our server was very polite and attentive. The dining room was very clean and the ambiance was traditionally delightful. My wife ordered the vegetable spring roll but it had bits of meat in it (Warning). My egg roll was delicious and the wasabi dip that came with was very good. The entree's were definitely good. My wife had the chicken curry and I have the 5-taste chicken and we had enough to take with us. We skipped dessert but they gave us sliced oranges with the peel on. Ok, knocking of a star for the flavor or lack of flavor of the puff fried dough surrounding my pork. The dough had no flavor, so drenching the pork puffs in sweet and sour was a must. I never drench my pork in the sauce. I usually just drizzle. They had the option to also get brown rice with the meal which I chose since it's healthier option. However!!! Their pork lo mein is the the best I've had anywhere! We would always order Chinese from Yen Ching when we lived in Virginia, but normally the broad street location. Since my fam now lives on south side we chose the Midlothian location. The lo mein has so much flavor, not overly salt or saucy. It's just perfect. So happy we got to get take out while we were in town. We even ordered through the Yelp App! They called us after we placed the order to ask which location we were ordered from since they have 3, so I said Midlo. read more

I was gifted with a Grubhub gift card and decided I would splurge on Chinese! I saw the picture of a real ass egg roll and I was sold!! I live in Jackson Ward and they came all the way from Midlothian to deliver this deliciousness! Now my driver was acting perplexed by me ordering from this place and mentioned there were better places in the area. Well Mr Grubhub deliverer I'm happy with my food choice! It's soooo good! I ordered shrimp fried rice, fried chicken wings and a fat ass egg roll. They do not skimp on the shrimp and that's a major plus. It didn't come with bean sprouts another win!!! The chicken wings are really flavorful! I swear I eat so many chicken wings I'm going to turn into a damn wing. One star off for no eating utensils or napkins. I wish I would have read Yelp reviews prior to ordering via Uber eats. This establishment was rated 4.7 on Uber eats. Ordered crab ragoons which were terrible. Terrible taste-soggy with very tough ends-I think they were sitting under a warmer all day. Wonton soup was anemic-wonton not bad, but only a minuscule amount of meat. Main meal of shrimp with vegetables, sauce watered down and everything tasted slimy. Yuck! Needless to say, unfortunately it ended up in the trash. Yes yes yes! I can't believe we waited so long to get food from here. Drove by so many times and finally decided to try it out. We ordered takeout for 9 people and it ended up being under $100 which I think is very reasonable. The food was delicious! So flavorful and fresh tasting. The only issue we had was that the sweet and sour chicken wasn't very crispy, but it's a bit of a drive home and after popping them in the air fryer for 2 minutes they were perfect. The veggie low mein was a huge hit with everyone. I ordered the mixed vegetable with bean curd soup for 2 as my entree and enjoyed it all to myself. I can't even list all of the things we ordered but I can say that everyone was full and satisfied. We ordered again a couple weeks later and will be making this place our regular take out spot. read more

I ordered the chicken wings (10 for $7.50) and he ordered the Honey Walnut chicken but with no walnuts ($12.50 came with a side or white or fried rice) he chose fried rice. We both got the sweet tea. Non alcoholic drinks are NOT listed on the menu at all which is just an inconvenience. I loved my fried chicken wings. They were hot (temperature wise) and crispy. They came with this sauce on the side that was great. It smelled spicy (like there was a splash of hot sauce in it) and sweet but turns out it wasn't at all spicy just sweet. It was still good tho. My boyfriend HATED his food. The honey chicken literally had no flavor what so ever. (I also tasted it and totally agree) Didn't taste any honey or sweetness or chicken. We've been eating here for over 15 years and we plan to never return after today. 1) they took close to 30 minutes to take our order; 2) fifteen minutes after we placed our order, they told my husband they were out of Chinese steak but would replace it with szechuan steak 3) the crab rangoon we ordered was still frozen on the inside, had to send back to recook 4) wonton soup was also cold. We didn't make a fuss about any of the above issues. My biggest issue was with the check. The Chinese steak was $15.75 and the Szechuan steak was $16.75. On principle, I'd expect them to charge us for the Chinese steak since that's what we ordered, but settled for the Szechuan steak. Nope, they charged us $16.75. No biggie, I'll just take it from the tip (remember it took 30 minutes to place our orders). But they charged us a mandatory tip for a party of five. I told them to remove the tip amount because the service didn't deserve $15. They refused and even threatened to call the police!! So they ran my card, I scratched out the $15 tip amount and replaced it with a $10 tip. In hindsight, I should have given even less than that. But they've lost a customer. It's sad when a change in management ruins a once great restaurant. read more
