I really dislike having to give this restaurant a two star review! Especially again! (Sigh) My wife and I started picking up a meal for us around 2013; it had decent Chinese fare for a pretty decent price then. I wanted to add that it's not the best when it comes to eating in; it's bare-bones seating and the ambiance equates to a big zero. It's our opinion that Mea and her husband (the owners) preferred the pickup/delivery side of the business, but did provide a place to sit. We noticed during Covid that the prices went a bit high, but so did a lot of restaurants and companies- so we simply cut back on carry out orders. ‍ We actually stopped going there for about 2.5 yrs, concentrating on restaurants with coupons to save money. The other issue is on our last visit, the food was very bad. (See other review from 3 years ago) Last week we decided to order two meals with a large wanton soup and crab Rangoon to split for lunch the next day. The background noise there is always a problem when ordering by phone, so when she said the price it was quite hard to understand. Since our last visit's bill was around $30.00, we figured it be a few bucks more, so we let it go. But one thing did surprise my wife when she ordered this- the first thing the phone person said before taking or order was, "If you wish this delivered, the delivery charge will be $20..." My wife said no, we always pick our order up due to the 2.1 miles distance from our house; but she was very surprised! I went in to pickup the order while my wife waited in our truck; Mae's younger daughter was there at the counter, so I asked why the high delivery fee. She looked at me and quietly said, "Um, it because of DoorDash..." I nodded, but told her that was a ridiculous price, and smiled. But the kicker was yet to come. A few minutes later she brought the bagged meal to the counter, and said, "That will be $48.79." I was shell-shocked! I stated at her for a minute, and asked her again; she repeated it. I about had a cow! The family was busy cooking, and I didn't want to vent my frustration on this young gal. I paid, and asked her to pass along to her mother that we won't be back for that price! (Mea, the mother, knew us both by name. I understand that prices have increased some, and inflation is a big problem currently; but almost $49.00 for two regular Chinese meals, soup and crab Rangoon?? Ive always gotten great food from here, but the last two times it hasn't been the case. The last time they came without our appetizer, so they promised us to make up the next time we ordered. They would not send anyone back out to make it right. Well today was the last straw. The same thing happened again! The food came to us cold, Sesame chicken was hard to chew as if it was over cooked, and AGAIN we were missing our appetizer. We come from far just to pickup "take-out" at this place. We generally like it. Over the past few years it has gone up in price and quality has gone down a bit. At least that is what we see in our orders. we have ordered from here 10s of times in the past years but last week it went down too far. 1) Sesame Chicken was way too soggy and did not seem or tasted like sesame chicken. It looked and tasted more like Sweet and Sour Chicken with Sesame seeds on it and a slightly darker sauce... was not very pleasant. 2) Food here is generally delicious... this why we have already from here 10s of times. 3) Many Times They forget to put an order of something in our order bag and we have to end up coming back for it... this has happed many times. This place is your typical Chinese takeout/delivery restaurant. What makes it nice is that you can order to your hearts content on-line! This is a new one to me and it makes ordering a breeze. You can even pay through PayPal which is amazing if your wallet is still in the trunk of the car after a long trip and you have settled in a comfy chair in on the second story :) So, give them a try - the wait time is variable as I have waited an hour on busy nights and about 20 minutes on slower days. They only have a few people that can deliver, so give em' a break and pass the sweat and sour! read more

I've been going to Lucky's for years now. Decided to go by there today to get chicken wings with House Lo Mein which comes with beef, pork and shrimp. All was well until I tasted the shrimp they weren't as good as before Idk if they were bad but I decided not to eat any more because who wants to be sick. Really, I don't but anyway the fried chicken wings were good as always. And normally it only takes 10 minutes or so if you're picking up your order. In my opinion, Chinese takeout in RVA can either be a hit or miss. Granted, most Chinese takeout sells food that is greasy and unhealthy, as long as that greasy food has a good taste to it, one could easily forget the health issues that consuming the food may bring. Nevertheless, I was on a mission to find a new Chinese takeout restaurant that was not as expensive as Jiang's off Midlothian Turnpike, but was not as disgusting as Good Taste located downtown. So I stumbled across Lucky Chinese Restaurant. How did my experience go? To find out, read below. The Good: Online Ordering- One of the few Chinese takeout places in RVA that has online ordering which is always a plus. Delivery- The delivery minimum is $12. After ordering delivery, the message said that it would come in 45 minutes and it came exactly in 45 minutes. There is no false advertisement there. Condition of Food Upon Delivery- Food was hot upon delivery which makes me feel at ease with the long delivery wait. Taste of Chicken Wings and Chicken and Broccoli- I ordered three items, two of which were the chicken wings and a small chicken and broccoli. The wings were battered and fried to perfection while the chicken and broccoli was cooked in a sauce that was not as salty as some of the other places that sell the same dish. Price/Portion Size- For $12. I ordered three dishes that more food than I could eat. At Jiang's Chinese Restaurant, one of the specialty dishes alone cost a little over $12. The Not So Good: Chicken Fried Rice- While I would love to give this place five stars, the taste of the chicken fried rice prevents me from doing so. Chicken Fried Rice is THE MOST CRITICAL thing that I rate on my Chinese takeout reviews. It is my favorite food and it can make or break my decision to frequent a restaurant. In my opinion, the rice was a tad bit too greasy and salty. While I am not a fan of dry and overcooked fried rice, overly greasy fried rice can be just as bad. In my opinion, when fried rice is too greasy, it impacts the integrity of the dishes flavors. Overall- Most of the food that I had was reasonably priced, portion sizes justified the cost and it allows orders to be made online. This is my favorite Chinese take out place. Period. Definitely the best one on Hull Street Rd. We've been ordering here for atleast 10 years& I have never had a bad experience. The food is always hot & tasty. Delivery is fast, friendly and I've never had any issues with my order. The delivery person saw me at the door and I turned the porch light on as he was coming to the door and he still rang the door bell. The food was warm but not hot and there was no napkins, utensils or chopsticks in the bag. Bottom Line: Solid Chinese Takeout. We ordered the spring rolls, steamed pork dumplings, vegetable lo mein, and the sesame chicken. Everything was good. I awoke that morning with a hankering for lo mein and they did not disappoint. Good price, good portions. You could go more expensive, but honestly you don't have to. Three stars because the sesame chicken was supposed to come with white rice, but it did not. Killed the vibe, we had no rice to soak up the delicious sesame sauce. Tried Lucky Chinese this weekend, I read the reviews and thought I would give it a try as my experiences in some of the other take out places left a little to be desired. The online order website was real nice and easy to navigate. I chose pick up and drove to the restaurant to pick up, the appearance of the restaurant was a little dicey but the food was ready and the people were friendly. The food was flavorful and portions were large. We tried the orange chicken, singapore noodles, and egg rolls. All in all, very good and we will order again in the future. read more

I have ordered food many times and loved it. But tonight the egg rolls were chewy and dry. Tasted old. My pork dish that said spicey and asked to add spice was horrible. It had no spice at all and the pork was dry and hard to chewy. Like beef jerky chewy. The veggies were bitter. The worst I have ever tasted. We've been eating here for years. We love that they deliver to our home. I agree that the delivery can take a while, but that being said, we were told 45 minutes the other night and it came in 25, so it's a gamble worth taking. The few times it has been a longer than usual delivery time, I go pick it up...no problem as the staff is friendly and the food is well worth it. The prices are very reasonable and in line with what others charge from VA Beach to NOVA. Hubby and son LOVE their wonton soup and crab rangoons. I can't get enough of the mu shu chicken (sp?) and veggie chow mein. I always request with no mushrooms and they happily oblige. We recently tried the ribs that they serve as an appetizer, and we will certainly be ordering them again soon! Give Lucky Chinese a try. Even if you wait for delivery, it is well worth it! read more

I decided to try Lucky Chinese for takeout last night after visiting my nearby credit union. I wish I hadn't. While the service was friendly and fast, the food was just not very good, even by Chinese takeout standards, in my opinion. It was my first time here so I took a few extra minutes to explore the menu. I decided on some broccoli beef, house chow mein, and a dish I hadn't eaten before called mala chicken. Five to ten minutes later, my bag was ready so I was on my way. The broccoli in both entrees was fresh and not overcooked, which was a definite plus, the chow mein was pretty good too, with a nice selection of ingredients and good flavor. I guess my biggest issues were that 1) the food was very greasy and 2) the broccoli beef and mala chicken tasted like they had the exact same brown-colored thick sauce, which was also somewhat bland. I'd asked about the mala sauce and was told it was a spicy, numbing, Sichuan sauce...right in my comfort zone. This morning as I search for google images of mala sauce, it doesn't look at all like what I got last night.
