I got into Richmond for a work trip and was excited to try Native Plate. The menu looked awesome and exciting. I ordered the Vietnamese spring roll and added shrimp, and got the curry laksa. The restaurant was a little dark inside when I went to pick up my room, but it was full and people seemed to be having a good time. I ate in my hotel room since it was late, and the food traveled well. I was a little disappointed, though. The spring rolls were very sticky, you had to really pull them apart from each other, as the rice paper stuck together like glue. The taste was good, but the shrimp was sparse, I think I had one shrimp in each roll. But the peanut sauce was good. The curry tasted good, but the ratio of noodles to curry was really disappointing. There were a ton of noodles, chicken, and veggies in the container which was awesome. I'm not sure if it was it was because it was a to-go order but there was very little curry in the to-go container. Because I ate in my hotel room and didn't have a bowl, I used the noodle/chicken container as my bowl, and the curry barely covered the bottom of the container. The elements tasted really good, but the noodles, chicken, and veggies were a little dry because of the lack of curry. Maybe if I did dine in it would have been different, but I wish I had a better experience. read more

Native Plate is a cute smaller establishment that offers Asian/American fusion. Many of the dishes are distinctly Asian in heritage (bulgogi, bao, Szechuan, etc). But tapered to local pallets - face it, this is predominantly a white-bread area and getting authentic dishes and spices is a stretch. That being said, what we had was excellent! Wife had the duck bao, and it reminded us of being back in Taiwan. Around here, finding decent bao is impossible, and there was plenty of duck for the price (the taro chips were also a favorite!). I was in a lighter mood and had a chicken vermicelli bowl; served with a Thai sweet chili, they accommodated me by adding Sambal to spice it up. Great food and reasonably priced for what you get. Staff was pleasant and friendly. Only downside could be that street parking is iffy. We got lucky today, but could see that being an issue. Will definitely be back! read more

The flavors were right but it was mostly romaine lettuce and like 4 slices of octopus. Not quite enough food to be a main course. Shared the gochujiang cauliflower appetizer - crunchy and spicy. Good flavor and good size. Served on chopped romaine lettuce. My friend got the Malaysian curry. The broth was flavorful but light (wanted more intense flavor), the flavors didn't permeate the slices of chicken. I met a friend for dinner at Native Plate, and enjoyed the experience. The restaurant serves dishes inspired by Asian street food. It is located downtown on Main Street, so finding close street parking can be challenging at times - you will likely have to walk a couple blocks. The restaurant is not extremely big, but it didn't feel crowded. We got there at 6pm on a Wednesday and were seated right away - it was not very busy, although the empty tables slowly filled up over the next hour. The restaurant felt cozy with the dim lighting and comfy seats. The service was quick and friendly. I ordered the Chicken Bulgogi BBQ, which came with rice and sautéed peppers and onions. The sauce was very flavorful; the only downside was that the dish wasn't very hot when it came out. Overall a good experience though; I'd definitely come back. read more

Sorry, too shady for my taste. A few of us went for lunch last week. The food was good enough and we all shared a few things. I later realized the charge that showed up on my credit card statement was $5 higher than I tipped. Essentially $25 total became $30. When I called to speak to a manager the next week I was told they would not be in and to call back the next day. When I asked a question in attempt to follow up I was told there was no manager on-site that I could speak to today. They took down info and would share my request for a call back. When that didn't happen I called back and was able to speak to the manager. The conversation revealed a lot about their attitude and care for their customers. The manager failed to apologize for the mistake (or was it?) and made several excuses in response. He eventually mentioned something about "sorry" and would look into refunding the additional money (TBD). I feel an appropriate response would have started off by returning my call, next by apologizing for what occurred and ensuring me it's not a problem to take care of it, returning the extra charge to my credit card and saying that he would talk to the staff to ensure they are entering tips correctly and to take better care of ensuring you are not overcharging customers whether by mistake or truly as fraud. You can guess we won't be back or recommending this place to anyone anytime soon. read more

It is easy to walk by this place and not give it much notice, but you will be missing out if you do. While visiting Richmond, my husband and I visited not once, but twice. The steak Bulgogi BBQ with crisp tender vegies as takeout on our first night was so good, I was left craving more. So, a couple days later before returning home, we stopped by for lunch and ate outside on one of the couple tables outside. There were many draws on their menu but the Bulgogi BBQ kept calling me back. This time I chose another protein for a little variation. It was delish. The staff is friendly and efficient. We were a group of 4 and ordered the ahi tuna appetizer (very good), the Pho Noodle Soup (although it was very tasty, I didn't like that the beef brisket was a bit tough and grisly), the Tuna Poke Bowl (delicious) and the Hibachi Bowl with chicken (also very good). I could have written this review before my 4th visit in two weeks and my overall thoughts would still be the same. To cut straight to the point, if you live or work downtown by Native Plate, you should definitely check it out. --Food: I've went 4 times and got something different every time. I also have Celiac (cannot eat gluten), which for some places is difficult in finding options, but Native Plate's staff has been awesome working with me to let me know what I can have and make alterations to some of the items to make them safe for me. - Singapore Noodles: This was the first entree I got. It's basically stir fried vermicelli with kicks of curry spice with peas, peppers, pork, and shrimp. It was good, though after trying all of the other items, might be my least favorite. (But like, least favorite of 4 tasty things is still tasty!) - Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice): It's a close tie for my favorite between this and the Curry Laksa, but this is a great rice dish. Okay, so it's mostly a big plate of fried rice with a protein of your choice, but the seasoning and oils used are completely different than your normal Chinese or Thai fried rice. There's a completely different experience to the chili garlic oil in this one, accompanied by a whole egg and tomatoes / peas. It's an incredibly satisfying dish. Oh yeah, it's easily enough for 2 or 3 people, so you could order this among your group and split it if people like fried rice. - Beef Brisket Pho: Whenever I get Pho out in the West End (where you can get it from like 10 different places in a 10 minute drive), I always wonder why downtown doesn't have pho. Some of the places that do it feels like an afterthought and the broth isn't savory or aromatic, but the broth at Native Plate is actually quite flavorful! Everything tastes fresh in the dish too, but I will say one part I'm neutral on is the brisket. It's not fatty and the cut is good, it just isn't super duper flavorful on its own. I would get it again, it's not that it's bad, but the star is the broth. I also didn't notice a lack of noodles as mentioned in some reviews, seemed pretty filing to me. - Curry Laksa: Where do I start with this one? It's just straight up delicious. The broth is so flavorful and has hints of coconut, chili, lemongrass / spices, and ginger. Also has bokchoy, onions, bean sprouts, and chicken. I can't eat egg noodles but they happily subbed in rice noodles / vermicelli, and it was honestly the best curry noodles I've had in a while. Super flavorful, savory but not heavy, just a really satisfying entree. Absolutely recommend. -- Cost: So it's not super cheap. I think everything I had was around $15ish, but all well worth it. In the case of the first two, it also provided some yummy leftovers. -- Atmosphere: Cute af. It's a really inviting and attractive interior. Great decorations, comfortable layout (a tiny bit on the small side, but you can't make a space larger than it actually is), and the music is hip. Honestly if you go to YouTube and listen to any of those relaxing cafe streams, it's similar to that. Well, the music isn't, but the overall atmosphere. At least for lunch. -- Service: Top notch. The guy at the bar, Randall I believe?, is super polite and informative. He let me know what he knew I could have with my dietary restrictions and checked with the kitchen on things he wasn't sure of. I had emailed with Lorna prior to visiting as well and she gave me a list of things she was sure I could have or have adapted, and I still have a few things to go through and I look forward to it. (Though the Curry Laksa and Nasi Goreng are damn good, it's going to be high bar to beat those.) They also list that their menu can be adapted for Vegan and other lifestyles as well, so there's probably something for everyone here. --Overall: For Richmond, probably my #1 recommendation for 2021 of new places I've tried. Now, I've never had alcohol so I can't vouch for that, but for a lunch spot you can hit up and out of in an hour, I totally recommend it. I'm not saying it's the absolute best or fanciest place you can eat in RVA, but it's incredibly solid and I've left quite happy each time. read more

For the main dish we had the chicken and steak Indonesian Fried Rice which had a great flavor. The place is a small restaurant and was not crowded when we were there. Everything was literally so amazing - the waitstaff were incredibly kind and helpful navigating our food allergies, the bar tender made me a delicious mocktail mojito, and our food was so so fresh. They are in fact a scratch kitchen, and everything tasted like it was grown out back and picked just for our meals! We can't wait to bring family and friends here! My one teensy complaint is that it gets a little smoky when they cook, as there doesn't seem to be much ventilation, but that would not stop me from coming back. I can't remember the name but it was delicious for sure. Had fruit and ginger beer with a lovely flower on top. For food we could not choose because all of the dishes sounded so good! So we decided to pick two to split. The Singapore Noodles and Indonesian Rice. Both were FANTASTIC! But if I had to pick one over the other, I'd go with the rice for sure. It was a close call though. I've been here for lunch while working downtown quite a few times. It's small and kind of loud but I've never had to wait for a table. The staff is super friendly and the decor is nice and fun. I absolutely love the food. It is thai-flare but the dishes are unique and intriguing. The first time I came I got the Curry Laksa- 10/10. This is my favorite dish I have gotten. Colorful with lots of flavor and different textures. Highly recommend recommend. It can be made gluten free as well. The Bulgogi BBQ was really good but didn't stick out to me from other typical stir fry dishes. 7/10. (I am always looking for what is both delicious AND unexpected) The Indonesian Fried Rice came with a lemon which was the perfect fresh touch. Also probably the biggest portion on the menu I've seen so you get lots of leftovers. Just wish there was more of a balance of vegetables to rice or more of a sauce. Very good but I thought the curry laksa was better. 8/10. Such a fun menu! I want to go back and try more things. read more

By sheer luck or divine culinary guidance we happened upon Native Plate during our east coast roadtrip to NYC for the holidays. We had many enjoyable meals in Brooklyn and Manhattan but our favorite was this little gem in Richmond. Everything about Native Plate was superb. The seating is comfortable, the vibe chill, and the music so good that I asked for the streaming link. The drinks were outstanding, the Pok Pok chicken wings were crispy, savory, spicy, sweet perfection and our all-time favorite wings, along with the Singapore noodles. The wait staff was welcoming and I much enjoyed my conversation with the bartender. In the future when on I-95 and passing through Richmond, we'll plan a stop at Native Plate, our new favorite restaurant. read more

Cute and cozy restaurant located in downtown Richmond. Some street parking and garages around. The food here was delicious. We ordered the Pok Pok Wings as our appetizer. For those who are sensitive to the fish sauce smell, it is pretty strong but not overpowering in the taste. For dinner, we ordered the Curry Laksa and the Octopus Salad. The salad was a decent sized and plenty of octopus. The Curry laksa was definitely the star of the night. The broth was amazing and I wish I had more of it. I did try and ask to see if I could get some more but they pre portion it so that was a little disappointing. Only somewhat negative aspect was that our service was a little slow. There were only 2 servers and ours wasn't as attentive as we would have liked. There were several times were we were sitting around for some time as our server walked past us and was at the counter with her phone. It's a good introductory place if you want to try various Asian foods. The pho had a homemade taste. I wish there was more broth and the beef sliced thinner. Finally got the chance to try out this new place after walking past it a couple times! I got the curry laksa and was happy with my experience! As someone who grew up eating a lot of laksa noodles, I liked their thick curry broth as it was well seasoned and had very strong coconut flavors!! I very much enjoyed the noodles as they were cooked really nicely: chewy but al dente. I really wish they had a spicy curry option though. The noodles came with chicken, bok choy, and bean sprouts. The veggies were pretty solid but the chicken pieces were a little dry on the inside. The fried garlic bits definitely added to the overall flavors. I loved the cute aesthetics!! Pops of warm colors with lots of green plants and wooden tables/chairs. Service was great and staff members were all wearing masks appropriately. What a treat! My sister and I were in town to see Bonnie Raitt at the Altria and decided to go to Native Plate for a bite before the concert. Our server Eric was awesome - funny, genuine, very attentive without being over the top, and gave great recommendations on the menu. Native offers some unique cocktails and an interesting mix of Asian fusion appetizers and entrees. We ordered a delicious gin cocktail, the cauliflower gochujang, gyoza, and curry laksa. All of it was DELICIOUS. The servings are generous at a very reasonable price. It's not big inside but cozy and nicely decorated. I highly recommend stopping in if you're in the area. read more
